Re: Handling Tables

2012-02-03 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Christo,

Is there anyway of doing this using my MacBook with VO?

TextEdit will read your documents with no trouble. If you find that ticking
boxes is a problem, then things get more complicated.

Pages doesn't handle tables well with VO. You can't even recognise a table
unless you know it's there from reading the same document in TextEdit. A table
shows up as a highlighted space, so if you can find it, you can copy it into a
Numbers document, work on it there, and copy it back into Pages. Quite a messy
procedure until you get used to it.

If you find a highlighted space and want to know whether it is a table, go to
the Format menu and go down to Table. In the submenu, look for Convert table
to text. If this option isn't dimmed, then you've got a table and you can make
it visible using this command. However, if you modify the table under these
circumstances, its formatting will be lost.

Sorry for the ramble, but it's a complex subject.

Cheers,

Anne

Sound dock recommendations

2012-02-03 Thread chris hallsworth

Hello all.
First of all, I must stress I live in the UK. So UK availability would
be of importance.

Now onto the question.
Does anyone have any recommendations regarding a sound dock for an
iPhone 3GS? It must also charge the phone as well.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

extracting audio from video files

Yes, I know I can just sync the movies over to the iPad, but I want to be able

Re: Help with voiceover shortcut or gesture

2012-02-03 Thread Steve Holmes
I think this may vary depending on what the link is or goes to. I ran
into this similar situation this morning. I originally started up
Safari and went into the search box from the tool bar to look
something up in Google. As I arrowed down the list of probable items
to link to, I opened up the context menu and had trouble finding the
item to open in a new tab. I also did not see anything for
downloading; that would make sense here as the Google hits aren't
usually downloadable items. Later on, I did find something I wanted
to download and when opening that same context menu, I was offered
additional choices including Save linked file to Downloads and
Saved linked file as... I am still learning my way around Safari
and the mac so I'm still bouncing off the walls just yet.

Hope tHope these observations are of some help.

Re: Navigating in Preview.

2012-02-03 Thread Geoff Waaler
Thanks to all who responded. I may buy Skim though its primary function seems
to be features I don't care about.

Travis stated that its not hard to get where you want to go, and that is a
reasonable expectation. After hiding the tool bar it seemed to work better,
but now when I quit interacting, and bring up the go to page dialog via
command-option-g and interact immediately, my focus remains where ever I was
previously. Page up/down also have no apparent affect. Reading this 900 page
file one page at a time (toggling interacting every step) is not a viable
option.

If this is in fact not hard, perhaps you can offer a suggestion?

  TIA and best regards.
  Geoff

If you're having trouble with previews continous view, try the single
page view instead. This will only allow one page at a time to be
vissible to vo, so that you won't be dropped back at the beginning of
the document. There's some tricks for staying where you want to be
in the preview app, but it's all dependent on whether or not you're
interacting, and how your cursors are set, and (apparently) sometimes
where the real cursor is. It's actually not hard to get where you
want to go, but it is a bit tricky, and takes timing sometimes (since
you need to catch vo before it starts reading from page 1, interact
with the text, then (usually) you're back where vo was, but
occasionally, this doesn't happen, so you get dropped back at the
start, which can be quite confusing, especially if you're new to
preview, and don't know how to move around.
But, if you turn on single page view, this problem goes away, with
the only caveat being that you can't read the whole pdf from start to
finish with a vo-a like you can if it's in cntinuous mode.

Re: itunes movies

2012-02-03 Thread Esther
Hi Sarah and Ian,

I thought there were considerably more audio described movies in the UK iTunes
Store than in the US, where there are only a few or maybe one right now. Try
doing a search of movies with the term dvs. (In the US iTunes store, only
Up will appear in a version for blind viewers).

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Navigating in Preview.

2012-02-03 Thread Paul Hopewell
Hello Geoff,
When I want to read a long PDF file I interact wit the test area and then press
command+a to select all the text and then use the services option of preview to
move the selected text into a new textedit window. I then save the textedit
document as an RTF file which is then easy to read continuously. I have even
used the services option to save the entire textedit document as a sound track
in iTunes so that I can download it onto my iPod and listen to it in the garden
or whatever. That works nicely.
All the best

just go to file and then export audio. you should be good to go from there. It
will export the whole thing to what ever format you choose.

I used handbreak to rip the dve in to the approprate language then mpeg stream
clip to extract the audio.

shell out more bucs just fake out the Mini. I really think Apple
should fix this situation so that a monitor would not be required for
anything except for using the mac without VoiceOver.

Re: extracting audio from video files

Oops? Ok. use handbreak to extract from the dvd if you still have it. you
should be able to extract your language you want. I hope that somewhat helps.

Take care.

Re: extracting audio from video files

2012-02-03 Thread Travis Siegel
If you have the program dvd remaster, it allows you to extract just
the audio track from a dvd, so you don't have to extract the whole
movie, then pull the sound out of that. It works pretty well. It
isn't real cheap, but for it's feature set, it's well worth the 60 or
so bucks they're asking (of course, I could be remembering the price
wrong, it's been a while since I registered my copy).
There's both a regular and a pro version if I remember correctly, I
got the pro, just because after looking at the differences, I thought
it was worth the extra funds, but again, it's been a while, so don't
remember what made me choose that option. :)

Guess I could go look, but that would take the fun out of it.
