Booting the New Mac Mini
Hello everybody OK; we just tried something here which has left us feeling a little bit disappointed in Apple's new policies. How far will they go down the road of control freaking? We decided to try and put one of our new Mac Mini machines on to Snow Leopard Server. So, we duly connected its superdrive, inserted the Snow Leopard Server DVD and then power-cycled the machine. Upon successful POST, we held down the C key, in order to have it boot from the DVD. Well, it tried; but then came up with an incompatibility message. The on-screen message just said that this OS was too old to boot the machine and it flatly refused to go any further. So, we then tried to install the server by means of the installation utility once the machine was booted, and got the same message. So, it would appear that, although you can boot mid 2011 Mac Minis from DVD, you cannot boot them from a Snow Leopard DVD. This shocked me a little, since there's no earthly reason why Snow Leopard will not run in this environment. It also means I presume that, if one wanted to run LINUX on a machine like this, one couldn't do so. This really does come across as paranoia gone beyond the stage of madness. Re: Booting the New Mac Mini
Hi Lynne, This is the same with memory upgrades, and even hard drives. You can't, for instance, swap a non-Apple hard drive into an iMac from 2011, at least not without the right firmware. I accidentally went ahead and got one that didn't have the correct firmware onboard, and the fan just started whirring as loudly as possible and pretty much displaying a blank screen of death. They do the same with memory modules now. I've never really used Apple-branded RAM, so imagine my surprise this morning when my iMac was unable to boot out of nowhere. I had to dig around in boxes to find the old RAM, and essentially keep all of my other memory sticks that are now a total waste of money. Honestly, I find this a bit much. Machine specific installations, I can understand due to features becoming more advanced. What I cannot understand, though, is why it has to matter what hardware you use. As long as you get the right modules, it shouldn't matter. Apparently, Apple thinks otherwise. Hello Nic I am equally disgusted to be honest. I suppose we are lucky in a way; the memory we bought from Crucial works fine and doesn't give us any issues other than the one you already know about, which I cannot talk about here. But we are jittering on the point of ordering a new machine, wondering whether to go Apple or PC for the additional server we require. The Death Of An Old Mac Friend
Hello everybody Yesterday for some inexplicable reason, our old PowerPC Mac Mini finally bit the dust. Obviously it wasn't worth even trying to repair the machine which was almost 8 years old. So, as is his usual way when this happens in order to protect our data from the possibility of prying eyes, Gordon totally destroyed the machine; it's blasted into smithereens with a 28-pound sledge hammer. Anyway, here is my question. Are the Power supply bricks compatible with the 2009 Mac Minis? I know that they're not using external step-down transformers any longer. But if the supply is compatible we'll keep it as a spare,, just in case. We're replacing that machine and will tomorrow take delivery of yet another Mac Mini Server. A Useful Preview Feature for signing PDF documents
Hi ALl, I'm not sure how many of you have a need to sign PDF forms, but I just had occasion to use the digital signature feature of Preview to do so and it seemed to work acceptably for my sighted piers. To begin, you need to get a photograph of your hand-written signature with the Mac's i-sight camera, using the Signatures tab in Preview preferences. This probably requires sighted assistance or useful vision. Once that's done, you can sign a document by activating the Edit option in the toolbar, going to the signature option in the editing toolbar, and clicking with the physical mouse to check it. Once that's done, go to the place in the document you want to sign with the VO cursor, make sure the mouse pointer is routed there with vo-cmd-f5, and physical click once again. VO doesn't give as much feedback as it should, but this process is infinitely easier than printing the document and signing that way. I hope this helps somebody. Re: Braille Screen Covers for iPad
Hi Lynne, I'm not aware of anyone who makes tactile Braille covers for the iPad. As Sarah said, you can get screen protectors for the iPhone 4s from Speed Dots for about $7: http://www.speeddots.com/ There is a Kickstarter project called TouchFire for a screen-top keyboard overlay for the iPad. They will ship their product at the end of this month. This is a thin plastic overlay that sits over the keyboard portion of the iPad (in landscape mode), with molded keys. For the second and third generation models, it can be stored on the underside of a smart cover, and be held in place on the iPad with magnets. For the first generation iPad, the molded sides are supposed to fit the screen so the overlay will be aligned, but there is no extra securing. You can rest your fingers on the keyboard overlay. You are also supposed to be able to touch type with it in place, and swipe through the overlay to perform gestures. You can read more details about this at the project's Kickstarter web site: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/740785012/touchfire-the-screen-top-keyboard-for-ipad I have one of these due to come in, from backing the project last November, so I'll be able to report on how this works. Scott Howell, who tried one of the prototypes, stated that for maximum typing speed you would probably want to turn VoiceOver off and just touch type, similar to the way you'd use the Apple wireless keyboard. Re: iPad GPS
It does not compare to the KNFB reader, which has the same resolution as the iPhone 4, because of Apple not releasing the full resolution to developers. In a perfect situation, I think that the iPhone 4 is okay, but give it anything challenging, and it is a disappointment, at least, that has been my experience. I have used a KNFB, as I used to own one, and it does much better. Re: Disabling the preview pain in mail using 10.6.8?
I don't have 10.6, but I thought a double click using vo-shift-space did the trick. Of course, it's been a few years since I tried it, and it wasn't on 10.6, so I could be mistaken. --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at either the list's own dedicated web archive: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html or at the public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/.
