iTunes navigation [was Re: iTunes Question.]

2012-11-06 Thread Danny Noonan
And yet again Esther, you've thrown out a little tidbit that makes such a
difference. The control f7 hotkey I've known about for a while but being
stuck in some windows mind sets, when I found how to set tab to move through
all controls, I jumped at the chance to get to what I had previously had in
windows. Although your tip was in reference to navigating within iTunes, it
works equally well with Apple Mail. Now when I press control f7, I can use
tab and shift tab to jump through mailbox table, message list and message
text so easily. No more multiple tabs between mailbox table and message list
which drove me nuts when upgrading to Mountain Lion.

 Kind regards,
 Danny:

 Hi Jim,

What do you mean by easiest way to return to the source list in iTunes?
If someone is completely lost in the iTunes window, pressing
Command-Option-F, which is the shortcut to move to iTunes' search text
field, followed by a navigation command such as VO-Right arrow (or just
Right Arrow with QuickNav on), or a press of the tab key, will always work
to move to the source list.

If you're moving between a songs list for your Music library or playlist,
then you can use VO-J to jump between the two tables. A very convenient way
to navigate in iTunes is to switch your tab key behavior to move between
text boxes and lists only instead of all controls by pressing Control-F7.
Then you can simply press your tab key to cycle continuously between the
search text field, the sources list, and the songs list -- or you can use
Shift-tab to move in the reverse direction. If you toggle on your column
browser with Command-B, in order to search or select more specifically by
album, artist, composer, or genre, then using the tab key will also move you
through any of these categories that you have enabled for your column
browser. So, for example, you could select tab to select an artist and then
a few specific albums by that artist in the column browser lists, and then
continue tabbing to the songs list and have all your selections show up.
The one warning about using Control-F7 is that it changes your tab
navigation everywhere. So if you expect to use tabbing to move through all
controls in another app, or perhaps when you navigate a web site, you should
make sure to issue another Control-F7 and check that you've changed this
behavior back before you leave iTunes. The place where this is setting for
tabbing is established can be hard to remember: it's iSystem Preferences
Keyboard under the Keyboard Shortcuts tab. There's an entry for Full
Keyboard Access: In windows and dialogs, press Tab to move keyboard focus
between: and radio buttons to set this to either Text boxes and lists
 only or All Controls.

Another quick tip for iTunes and the search text box. If you want to
quickly search for something in the iTunes Store, rather than in your own
music library, you can use the search text field (Command-Option-F to go
there), type in your search terms, and then hold down the Option key while
you press return. This directs the search to the iTunes Store instead of
your own library. Of course, if you want more specific searching according
to album title, artist, or composer, use the Store menu on the iTunes menu
bar and select the Search… option.

 HTH. Cheers,

 Esther

Ok, I've installed the newest version of skype. And yes, if you sign out of
your skype account it will provide an option to sign in with your windows live
messenger account and to merge the 2 together. Once you do this, you will use
your windows live messenger user name and password to sign in to skype, and the
messenger contacts do show up along with your skype contacts as well as an
indication as to whether it's a messenger or skype contact. Realy nice actually
no need to use a separate messenger app anymore, I like the change.

*Microsoft to close Messenger and consolidate IM service on Skype**
**By Juan Carlos Perez, IDG News Service**
 **
 **Nov 6, 2012 12:45 PM**

**Microsoft will shut down Windows Live Messenger next year, compelling
users to migrate to Skype, whose latest version can import users'
 Messenger contacts.**
 **
**With the exception of mainland China, Windows Live Messenger will close
in the first quarter of 2013, and its users should install the latest
version of Skype, Microsoft said on Tuesday.**
 **
**Users can sign into the Skype service with the credentials they use to
access their Microsoft online services, including Windows Live Messenger.
They will find their Windows Live Messenger contacts on their Skype
contacts list. If they used both Windows Live Messenger and Skype, the
 contacts lists will be merged.**
 **
**We want to focus our efforts on making things simpler for our users
while continuously improving the overall experience, wrote Tony Bates,
Skype's president, in a blog post.**
 **
**To encourage Windows Live Messenger users to update to Skype, Bates
touted several benefits they'll get from Skype, including support for more
devices such as iPad and Android tablets, screen sharing, the ability to
place calls to landline phones, and group video conferencing.**
 **
**However, this type of migration is rarely seamless, and users are
already raising questions in comments to Bates' blog post, including the
availability of certain Windows Live Messenger features and the capacity
of the Skype infrastructure to sustain the new workload.**
 **
**Microsoft, which acquired Skype in October 2011 for $8.5 billion, will
provide more information about the transition, as well as introduce
special offers for fee-based Skype services, in the coming months, Bates
 wrote.**

No, sorry. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I did not mean that I won't, but I
meant for others that might not want to. Not necessarily here, but in general.
As for Skype, I use it all the time and love it!
