Hi Cathy,

In most cases you can repair permissions or repair a disk by running Disk
Utility from the Applications folder. However, repairs cannot be made on any
files that are open at the time you run the repair operation, so for really bad
problems running a Disk repair from the same system volume that is open and
currently giving you problems may not work to fix things. So the convention,
from back in the days when we used install CDs or DVDs for the operating
system, was to run Disk Utility from the install DVD or CD, on the chance that
one of the files that is open when your system is running and booted from your
hard drive is the one that needs repairing. James translated the action for
the current operating systems that do not use install DVDs or CDs to running
the repair operation from the recovery partition.

What I usually do for instances that require extensive trouble-shooting is to
attach a hard drive with a bootable clone or a USB memory stick on which I have
created a bootable version of the operating system (with Carbon Copy Cloner or
Lion Diskmaker), then boot from there. This is also the usual procedure that I
adopt if really heavy-duty repair and diagnosis tools, such as Alsoft's Disk
Warrior, are needed. I have a copy of the software on the cloned disk drive,
and run it from there.

You can read a summary of good Maintenance practices, that includes
periodically running Disk Utility to repair permissions, at this OS X Daily web
site:
• OS X Daily: 4 Simple Mac Maintenance Tips

(For new Mac users, remember to use Command-Shift-R to bring up Safari Reader,
so you can focus on reading the article without viewing any of the other page
content.)

If you want a (much) more extensive description of maintenance practices, this
old Mac Attorney page on Mac OS X Routine Maintenance hits all the conceptual
highlights, even if it was written for systems 10.2 through 10.6, and includes
details about older systems:

Cleaning out caches, and corrupted preference files, both discussed on the Mac
Attorney page, are much lower down on the trouble-shooting list, but are
situations you may eventually encounter if you run your Mac long enough.

Firstly, I really wonder whether this is helpful given that you don't use the
software. . The question from Zack was whether anybody else is seeing the
issue. So, let me try to answer it, as we are Bento users.

Zack, yes, the issue exists here but let me tell you what's going on visually
while you're seeing the busy signals. Bento is searching for a valid library.
It also contacts the server on every launch to see if your copy is registered
or not. Then, software update comes into play. Bento does a pretty strange
sequence of checking different servers to see if there's a software build later
than yours. It seems to be the case that Bento is going into a loop when
VoiceOver tris to interact with it. Whether this is Apple's fault or not, I
don't know. However, I believe that Apple has shares in the Filemaker
Corporation so it might be a good idea to contact them first. However, as a
short-term work-around, Launch Bento with VO turned off and leave it for about
30 seconds. You may then find it works. Not always, but most of the time when I
have tried this it does seem to work.

Re: ML 10.8 update problem

2013-03-15 Thread Esther

You can read a summary of good Maintenance practices, that includes
periodically running Disk Utility to repair permissions, at this OS X Daily web
site:
• OS X Daily: 4 Simple Mac Maintenance Tips
http://osxdaily.com/2012/03/04/mac-maintenance-tips/
(For new Mac users, remember to use Command-Shift-R to bring up Safari Reader,
so you can focus on reading the article without viewing any of the other page
content.)

If you want a (much) more extensive description of maintenance practices, this
old Mac Attorney page on Mac OS X Routine Maintenance hits all the conceptual
highlights, even if it was written for systems 10.2 through 10.6, and includes
details about older systems:
http://www.macattorney.com/ts.html

Cleaning out caches, and corrupted preference files, both discussed on the Mac
Attorney page, are much lower down on the trouble-shooting list, but are
situations you may eventually encounter if you run your Mac long enough.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I am trying to connect a Brailliant BI 40 to an iMac via bluetooth.
Although the computer reports that the display is paired, it also reports

Any help would be appreciated all over the place.

Re: blindhow.com

2013-03-15 Thread Esther
Hi Lovette and Others,

I went to the blindhow.com web site and listened to and then downloaded one of
their featured audio programs on "Siri with iOS 6" (from September 2012).
Here's what worked for me:
1. Bring up links chooser menu (VO-U) on the web page with the audio program
player
2. Type "m p 3" to find the "Siri with iOS6.mp3" link in the links chooser
menu, then press return to navigate there
3. Use VO-Shift-M to bring up the contextual menu for the link
4. Arrow down to either the "Download Linked File" or "Download Linked File
As…" menu option and press return
This method worked download the file. I was also able to download the file by:
4a. Choosing the "Copy link" option from the contextual menu, then
5. Pressing Command-L to move to the Safari address bar and highlight the
address of the link
6. Paste in the copied link address with Command-V (which gives access to the
link address location in highlighted form)
7. Pressing Option-Enter to download the file, now that the link location is
highlighted
The last 4 steps are the method that I suggested in my earlier post from my
iPhone. The blindhow.com page I visited has an "Audio Player" region that you
have to interact with in order to navigate to the player controls. Just past
the player controls is the "Siri with iOS6.mp3" link, and the next element is
an instruction "right click to download". If you navigate back to that mp3
link, then pressing either Option-Enter or just the "Enter" (i.e."return") key
by itself will act to play/pause the audio. Pressing Control-Click, which is
the Mac keyboard equivalent of doing a right click with a mouse, brings up the
context menu for the link, with the option to download. VO-Shift-M, which is
the VoiceOver software equivalent command of a right click with a mouse, also
worked here to bring up the same context menu. I make the distinction between
these two options, because in some cases I may find that the software command
option doesn't work, but the hardware keyboard equivalent option of
Control-click always works -- whether or not someone is using VoiceOver. The
only instances where I have not been able to use Control-click to bring up the
context menu is in badly coded web pages where you cannot actually bring focus
to the link, usually because the web page designer has decided to use the HTML
element to visually format the design of a web page.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

the update is various security and bug fixes. details are on the ap store site

hey,
what are the new feechers of this update of ML?
On 15/03/2013 8:49 PM, JAMES AUSTIN wrote:

It is often worth running a Disk Repair and/or a Permissions repair before and
after an update as sometimes, things can get a little messy.

This is from memory, so i hope the steps are accurate. but to do this:

1. Restart your Mac - make sure you don't have any external drives connected.
2. Press and hold option are as you hear the "bong" sound.
3. Navigate once to the right with the arrow keys and press enter.
4. This will launch the recovery partition
5. After this has launched - maybe a few minutes, start VoiceOver - you might
need to hold down the FN key if you have a Macbook model.
6. You should find the option to Repair Permissions etc in the dialogue that
appears on-screen

Hope this helps

Actually, you go to the disk utility, Which is in the table that first appears
when the recovery thing launches, then click continue, and it somewhere in

Hi Laurel

One of the many shortcomings of VoiceOver in this app unfortunately. When I've
had this problem in the past, I have interacted with the "body", rooted the
mouse to the area with VO+Command+F5 and then physically clicked the mouse.
This has always fixed the problem for me if I remember correctly.

Hope this helps

I need some help fixing something. Earlier I was working in a pages document. I
use vo with the roter to navigate by word using my up and down arrows. I closed
my computer and came back to it later. I opened the same pages document to
continue working in it. I found that I could no longer navigate by word using
my up and down arrows. I now have to use my left and right arrows. I also
cannot write anything in this file, or edit it. What did I do, and how can I
fix this?
Thanks,
Laurel

Re: ML 10.8 update problem

2013-03-15 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
There isn't, occasionally, Mail will ask to be updated but you just need to
click continue and this takes a few seconds.

Hello,

I began with ML from late 2012.

I updated the software for my ML 10.8 on my Mac mini tonight. Then I tried

not work with ML. the ap would not even open so I could check the menu to
see if there was a separate menu item to update mail. now what? Shouldn't
the mail program have automatically updated? I selected the button to update
all available software. If there is something else I must do to update my
mail ap, please give me instructions on how to resolve this problem. only
reason I can even post is because my "other" unnamed computer is still
limping along.

Thanks, Cathy
