No audio with FaceTime on the Mac?

2013-03-17 Thread Dan Eickmeier
Hi all, I regularly use FaceTime on the mac, and it seems now, in a call I
tried earlier, that I wasn't getting any audio, and the person on the other end
of the call, wasn't able to hear me either. I tried various things such as
turning Facetime off, and then on again via FaceTime preferences, rebooting my
Mac, and making sure my mic was set right in FaceTime, and it was. RUnning
the latest update, 10.8.3 on a late 2012 21.5 inch iMac. I'm thinking it could
have to do with something in the 10.8.3 update? Not sure though. Just
wondering if anybody else may have experienced this since the 10.8.3 update?
Any suggestions to try and solve this would be appreciated.

Re: Tracking changes in Pages

2013-03-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Janet,

In general, a Braille display doesn't make Pages more accessible, but in this
case, it helps hugely.

I mainly use my Braille display when translating or proofreading a text as it's
quicker to see capitalisation and so on. This is true for any word-processing
application.

Cheers,

Anne

Stupid Issue With Expand Drive

2013-03-17 Thread Harmony Neil
Hellow,
I think I posted about this a couple of weeks ago, but the replies have
probably been deleted from the trash by now. Anyway, I try uploading a page to
one of the websites via expand drive, and it sometimes gives me a message
saying one or more of the items may have been deleted or is no longer available.
Does anyone know how to get round this annoying problem? This is the second day
in a row I've had it now and I would rather like to upload stuff. Any other
file I upload and this one I'm having trouble with normally work fine, it's
just sometimes I get this message ...
Thanks for any suggestions,
Harmony.

HI everyone.
Seeing the posts on the list over the past day or so regarding anti virus and
the mac leas me to ask about the actual position on this one.
Does the mac have built in virus protection, or is it better to install like
with windows a separate virus checker.
Thanks for any information.

I am using a Mac Mini Server and Mountain Lion. Currently, I use a

VO key combinations. I also can't start and stop music in iTunes. Is
this a known issue? Can this problem be solved?

Re: anti virus and the mac

2013-03-17 Thread JAMES AUSTIN
Hi Terry
To my knowledge there are no "viruses" for OS X in the wild. I use "virus" in
its traditional sense. That does not mean, I repeat "does not mean" that there
are not other threats. Most of which are Internet-based. Many of the
prevention methods involve vigilance by users. For threats such as tracking
cookies etc, you could try macScan.

Apple does have some in-built security for checking the validity of apps. It is
a dialogue that pops up, and there are one or two virus definitions in Apple's
viruses database.

The need for anti-virus is a divisive issue among the OS X community, and
although hi don't use any, I would suggest that if you want to use some then do
so. There does seem to be a great deal of complacency among OS X users.

Take care
James

As an update to my problem:

I've noticed that my left hand keys are not reporting any letters and
that my right hand keys are reporting numbers instead of letters.

The keyboard works well with my iPhone or my Apple TV.

Any help would be appreciated all over the place.

Re: Mac Mini Server and a bluetooth keyboard.

2013-03-17 Thread Jim Noseworthy

Hi Gang:

I resolved my problem by restarting my Mac with my USB keyboard
unplugged and the Bluetooth came up working fine. I was then able to
plug my USB keyboard in again and now, both keyboards are working
properly. It may have something to do with the fact that I had the
Mouse keys turned on on my USB keyboard: I'm not sure.

Thanks.

The keyboard works well with my iPhone or my Apple TV.

Any help would be appreciated all over the place.

Just a thought, which keyboard did you buy? I think there are several
variations from Apple. For instance, I believe the French keyboard is
different from the British one, which is probably slightly different to the US

Hi Terry

Just to add slightly to the response you got from James. Tracking cookies are,
although often meant innocently, a pretty nasty threat. Google is known for
tracking cookies, and I don't think any browser is immune. Since the cookies
use the browser and not the operating system, it's not restricted to Windows,
Mac or anything else.

I would also add, however, in Lynn's defence that many people could save
themselves an awful lot of frustration by looking in the list archives. They
are extensive, and cover a wide range of topics now. Virus stuff is one of
most asked questions. It's not a banned question or anything, but it would
make people's lives easier if they check the archives. ;)

Actually, I can confirm that, if I turn mouse keys on using the USB

Strange.

hi Zack,

thanks for explaining the purpose of the VIP. I just learned how to do it last

set one up for myself. its not as though I would want to be notified of

so now a question comes to mind, which I could experiment with of course, but
maybe you happen to know already? if I highlight a post from mac access and
create a VIP, will all messages from the list go into that mailbox or only
messages from the individual who posted the message?
thanks,

threading still broken in 10.8.3

2013-03-17 Thread Sarah k Alawami
Hello to all. In some of the folders i get the message threaded by name and not
by subject. This has been a long standing bug in 10.8 Since it got released. I
have talked to apple about this and they can see it going on but they cannot
figure out why.

I've tried rebuilding the mail data base twice, and rebelling the mail boxes
where this happens. I have show related messages off and i have the
conversations thing checked in view. It works like it is supposed to on every
list except the 4 lists where it fails. I even tried recreating the folders and
it still happens in these 4 or so folders.

Here's an ogg file. Sorry all, but i needed to save some space.

does anyone else have this problem? i even tried without success a permissions
repair after every update. And even tried reinstalling mail but that was also a
no go.

Take care all.

RE: Voiceover Acting strange

2013-03-17 Thread David Griffith
I cannot see it but I presume it is the vertical line of the frame of the
window containing the window element. In this case the messages. Windows
screenreaders do not expose you to these parts of the screen which is why it
an unusual concept if you are coming from Windows to the Mac.

I think the point is that if you interact with the vertical splitter you can
adjust the size of it which may be important for low vision users with
sight.

When I scroll down the list of files folders, the files shows up on

App Store and camera?

2013-03-17 Thread Josh Gregory
Good evening everybody, I was just wondering if anybody has had a chance to use
the Itunes store to redeem gift cards with the Mac camera. I'm hoping that
this will be a way for us blind users to gain access to the codes. If only they
did like they did with Mountain lion and would email you the codes…

RE: jumping strate to text on a webpage with Safari

2013-03-17 Thread David Griffith
If you are lucky you will hear Voiceover announce a reader button near the
address bar.
This does not work on a all pages but when it is there it will just read the
text of the web page with all the links etc stripped out.
This is similar to the experience on an iOS device and is very nice on
supported pages. It works well on the BBC site..
Apart from that using quick nav and single letter navigation will jump you
to H for headings etc. You may need to set this up in voiceover Preferences
under quick nav.

If the page is really unhelpful use item Chooser and simply start typing the
words you are interested in. This should jump you either to a relevant
heading or text you want to read.
