The procedure required, and most powerful software

2013-03-23 Thread Gordon Smith
Hi all

OK, for another project I need to be able to mix two or more files together.
This is a radio project so the jingle bed needs to be dynamic in terms of
volume. Could somebody plead outline the best way of accomplishing this task
using OS X audio editing software and mixing software?I don't want to have
to pay others to do the work, I want to be able to do it myself.

Thanks.

Hi Phil

if you are able to create an image like this yourself, what would be the point?
You'd be able to create all of the images required.

Re: This really is going to hurt a lot of blind people I think, read it!

2013-03-23 Thread Gordon Smith
Firstly, what on earth was the point in a single-word response?
I think Chris has a fair point here. In fact, I can see it both ways. Chris
is obviously quite an advanced user although I don't know what his Mac
experience level is. All the same, I tad to agree with the other Chris, Chris
Moore, that is. We need to live with it, so that's how it is.

Yes, sure, it'll be great if we can find a reliable way of overcoming this
challenge. But let's face it, and I have discussed this with Lynne who it was
that initially started the topic, we live in a visual world. It would be
really silly I think, if blind people were to be dragged kicking and screaming
into the 21st century. We gave to overcome these challenges, like it or not.
personally I think using the sane dull image for every podcast would be really
negative. We need to try and compete on the same level of performance as those
who can see. We don't want to be inhibited by practicality. So let's just try
and find a way around the problem. It exists but, as others have already
intimated, the challenge is not insurmountable.

Hi Sean

I think Lynne is referring to the way the server handles PHP scripting. This
is actually an area where there should be the least problems I would think.
PHP5 which is bundled with OS X 10.8 and 10.7 should work fine.

Unfortunately we cannot discuss the issue of list controller candidates on

Re: The procedure required, and most powerful software

2013-03-23 Thread Chris Gilland
I still stand by saying if you're looking for quote: the most powerful
software, unquote, you really! need to look at getting ProTools. I know
it's a bit pricy... ok, it's extremely! ;pricy, but believe me, you won't
regret. It will let you do everything! and then some, that you're trying to
achieve. Really, I'm not trying to be difficult nor steer you away from the
money you have, but, you did! did you not? say you wanted the most powerful
software, in your subject line. Well, I'm here to tell you that Garage
Band, though good for what it does, and Amadeus Pro, etc. also though good
for what they do, are *not!* the most powerful. If you really want out from
under the hood, and really want the tools to be able to endlessly learn, and
really explore new possibilities, then I still argue that ProTools is going
to be your best option. I'll stand by that rock solid.

Chris.

Gordon,

If either Josh or myself implied we were wishing this to be discussed on
list, that was definitely not my intention. I was simply stating that I'd
love to talk to you and others on Skype.

I'm off to get you added to my Skype contacts now. Yesterday was a bit
hectic, and so never got around to it.

I plan to do so now. I'm gonna add your mac-access.net account.

Hello everybody

Firstly, I would like to publicly thank all of those who have, during the

Gordon and I have been mulling this one over and we believe now that it
would be best to have maybe a minimum of three controllers in different

those times when we simply don't have the ability to monitor any longer.

I shall be contacting all of those who have so far responded to the call.
Gordon is suggesting that possibly you might like to do a short Skype or

Many thanks yet again.

I have.

I will comment further later but to be honest on first impression I am
disappointed. Basically a cardboard folder which is constructed into a box.
Quite flimsy and probably not suitable for any robust long term use.
I need to experiment further to see what the scanning results are like.

I have.

I will comment further later but to be honest on first impression I am
disappointed. Basically a cardboard folder which is constructed into a box.
Quite flimsy and probably not suitable for any robust long term use.
I need to experiment further to see what the scanning results are like.

Re: Stand Scan

2013-03-23 Thread Esther
Hello Dónal and David,

You might want to wait for Ann Robertson's comments on sample results from the
StandScan Pro. The StandScan basic model doesn't have sufficient light power
for good results from general scanning. It's designed for inexpensive portable
use with the iPhone (which is why the design appears to be flimsy).
Effectiveness of use of OCR programs on iOS devices by blind users is a
controversial topic, but among those who do this successfully (even before
StandScan), there's a general preference for Prizmo, which has more tolerance
to skewed images as well as doing good OCR. I think that ABBYY TextGrabber +
Translator should work well with the StandScan Pro, based on how well it does
on screen capture images. But I don't have direct experience with the
StandScan Pro.

Here's a link to an old LifeHacker article reviewing iOS OCR apps:
• The Best Image-to-Text App for iPhone (August 10, 2011)
http://lifehacker.com/5829568/the-best-image+to+text-app-for-iphone
You can use Safari Reader (Command-Shift-R). Interestingly, they use graphics
for the section headings: "Features", "Where It Excels", "Where It Falls
Short", and "The Competition". On my iPhone I saved each of the images to my
camera roll and processed then in TextGrabber, which popped them all out.

I don't recommend TextGrabber for visually impaired users without some way of
setting up alignment, but it works great on screen captures, and handles
multiple languages. I think Anne can comment both on the OCR programs and
results with the StandScan Pro.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Stand Scan

2013-03-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello dónal,

I have the StandScan Pro which has 15 Leds to provide good lighting. Yes, it's
flimsy, but it folds flat, weighs next to nothing, and works great with my
iPhone 5.

I've tested the StandScan Pro with a double-page from a pretty complexe book
using Prizmo in English with brilliant results. It was virtually perfect apart
from the page headings which are in italics and came out as garbage.

I tried scanning a rectangular box containing a deodorant spray, and
TextGrabber read the information almost perfectly, whereas Prizmo failed at
this task. This time, I was using French.

Yesterday, I demonstrated the StandScan Pro to an IT teacher I was training in
VoiceOver and the Mac. He gave me a flyer to scan and the result was perfect
using TextGrabber. He was so impressed that he called in some colleagues to see
this amazing thing!

So, yes, you have to be careful with the StandScan Pro as it can easily be
damaged, but it isn't a replacement for a flatbed scanner, it's a tool to carry
around in a backpack for those occasions when you really have to get the
information from a printed source quickly.

Below my signature, I'll paste in my description of how to set up a StandScan
Pro. By the Way, it ships with a 9 V battery holder and you can purchase a 12 V
mains adaptor. You really need the 12 V for good results, but you can also add
a battery holder for 8 AA batteries, giving a 12 V output.

The StandScan Pro plus mains adaptor comes to something under $35 which isn't a
lot to spend for such good results.

Cheers,

Anne

Lay the folded StandScan on a table with the small flap away from you.
Open the small flap and fold back the body of the StandScan towards you.
Now the topmost piece should open to the left, and the remaining part will open
to the right but will still be a double thickness.
Open the final piece to the right.
Go to the lefthand piece and you'll find that there is a crease running from
where it joins the second piece to the lefthand edge, a few centimetres in.
Fold along this crease making an elongated triangle.
The same thing can be found on the back edge of the same piece, and on the
front and back edges of the third section.
The piece at the extreme right is the top and you can find the LEDs along its
back edge, and the cable at its back left corner.
Lift the righthand section and lift the lefthand section, then fold over the
flap at the end of the section with the LEDs so that the magnets meet the
magnets on the lefthand section.
A flap of the top section folds down to engage with the magnets on the
triangular pieces, and the piece still lying flat at the back lifts up to meet
the top and the triangular side pieces at the back.
Your StandScan should now look like a large box with an open front and a short
cable coming out of the upper back lefthand corner.

Help with web navigation please

2013-03-23 Thread Catherine Turner
Hi all,

Still getting to grips with my Macbook pro and wonder if anyone could
help with a couple of issues I have with navigating web pages. I
think I've confused myself with the several ways of accomplishing the
same task. So can anyone suggest a way I can do these two things? I
do have quick nav switched on but I could switch it off if that makes
a difference.

1. Say on a web page I want to navigate to a button, but after that
read by line. So I can press b to get to the button, but after that
how do I then read from then onwards by line? What keystrokes or
gesture could I use?

2. In a table, if I want to move across a row cell by cell how do I
do that? And how do I move down a column cell by cell? I'm currently
set to have tables grouped, and I know how to change this if it helps,
but still not quite sure what having tables grouped means...

Thanks for any help.

Catherine

Re: Help with web navigation please

2013-03-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Catherine,

If you're navigating the Web in DOM mode, then with Quick Nav on, just the
right arrow will take you to the next element which probably corresponds to a
line or a sentence. Without Quick Nav, this would be VO-Right Arrow. In Groups
mode, you'd have to interact with the group, then press VO-Down Arrow, or with
Quick Nav, set it to Navigation and use the Down Arrow.

As for navigating tables, you have to interact with the table, then VO-Right
arrow will go along a row, and VO-Down Arrow will go down a column. You can
read a whole row with VO-r.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Help with web navigation please

2013-03-23 Thread Catherine Turner
Thanks Anne. I managed to get around the table by interacting with
it. I'm finding it a bit confusing at the moment though because
sometimes I press right arrow and I get the sound which indicates
there's something wrong or there's nowhere to move to, and then I find
I need to stop interacting with something in order to be able to use
right arrow to get to the next element. It seems like sometimes VO is
interacting with tables without me asking it to and sometimes it's
not. Finding the whole thing quite confusing really, got to just keep
trying I guess.

Thanks for your help,
Catherine

Problem changing VO voice

2013-03-23 Thread Catherine Turner
Hi,

I wanted to look at different options for the VO voice and changed it
from being Alex to Daniel Compact. But now I'd like to change it back
again and don't seem to have the option. When I get to the voice
setting it says "Daniel Compact locked".

At some point I was messing around/looking around at the settings in
system preferences for the system voice. I don't think I changed
anything there but perhaps I did and this has messed up VO's voice
settings?

Does anyone have any ideas why I shouldn't be able to choose any other
voices apart from Daniel Compact? When VO comes in the logon screen
it's using the Alex voice but after that I get Daniel Compact and
would like to change it again. Come to that, are there meant to be
more voices than those two? Because they are the only two I've seen
in my VO settings...I'm talking about the settings reached by pressing
VO Command left and right arrows - I don't know if there's another
place also for these settings...

Thanks,
Catherine

opening .m4B via dropbox on the iPhone.

2013-03-23 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi all,

I have a .m4b in my dropbox folder which is showing up perfectly on the iPhone.
However I don't seem to be able to (shall I say: export? open? it) with
anything on the device. I assumed that it would just open in the Music app but
seemingly not.

Has anyone found this to be the case and is there a workaround other than
importing to iTunes and syncing via the mac?

Thanks,

Hi Phil

if you are able to create an image like this yourself, what would be the
point? You'd be able to create all of the images required.

adding spoken tracks to iTunes

2013-03-23 Thread Phil Halton
is it the case that you can have a text document read by VoiceOver and added as
a audio file to iTunes?

How exactly is that accomplished?

Re: Help with web navigation please

2013-03-23 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi there!
I do not use it but under quick nav you can now do single letter nav [like b
for button] you have to set up this under commanders in VO utility!
And I am going to stay on a table for a while I lock VO and then I can just
arrow up/down/left or right within that table!
Oh just in case VO lock is VO with semi colon!
And VO utility VO+f8 and then Command+number 8 to get to Commanders quickly!
and select the quick nav tab!

Re: adding spoken tracks to iTunes

2013-03-23 Thread Red.Falcon
Hi I was just looking through some commands!
And there is VO+shift+Z to add last phrase to desktop as a audio track!
I suppose when its on your desktop you should be able to do something of your
choice!
Depending of the options allowed!

Re: adding spoken tracks to iTunes

2013-03-23 Thread Esther
Hi Phil,

One of the useful Services menu options is "Add to iTunes as Spoken Track". It
allows you to highlight a text file selection then have that file turned into
an audio file that gets added to iTunes. If you want to control the speaking
rate, though, you'll need to have a string at the beginning of the file to put
in the speech rate controls within a double set of brackets at the start of the
file, as in:

[[rate 300]]

That's two left brackets (where left bracket is the key to the right of the "p"
key), the word "rate", a space, and a number which is the words per minute,
then two right brackets. In the example used above, the rate is 300 words per
minute. I think George was asking about this on list yesterday.

I think you need to check this as one of your active Services, but I don't
recall the default settings, since I have this checked under my Services. You
can find out your checked Services menu options by navigating to the menu bar
(Control-F2 or VO-M), right arrow to your current application (e.g., could be
"Mail" if you're reading this post), press "s" to move to "Services", right
arrow to the submenu, Command-down arrow to the end of the Services sub-menu,
which should be "Services Preferences…" and press return. This puts you into
the correct tab of the keyboard shortcuts under System Preferences… so you can
navigate past the "Shortcuts categories" table (where "Services" will already
be selected and highlighted") to the second table of shortcuts for that
category. One of the options under the text category is "Add to iTunes as
Spoken Track", which you can check, and optionally assign a shortcut key
sequence to.

You select a text file, then either apply your shortcut, or navigate to the
Services menu in the menu bar and select "Add to iTunes as spoken track".

Alternatively, you could use Automator and use the "Text to Audio File" action,
which lets you select a voice, and was a way this could be done before there
was a services menu option.

If you want to learn more about the command arguments that can be used to
control speech, check out the guide at the Apple Developer's Web site for
information on how to embed commands into the text to speed it up or change
other attributes:

http://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/SpeechSynthesisProgrammingGuide/index.html

Embedded commands are described in the section titled "Techniques for
Customizing Synthesized Speech" > "Use Embedded Speech Commands to Fine-Tune
Spoken Output". There are a number of four-letter commands in addition to
"rate" that will let you do things like increase or decrease volume ("volm"),
change the way numbers are spoken ("nmbr" with the LTRL argument to speak digit
by digit, as in phone numbers, or with the NORM argument to go back to the
default mode). They can all be used together, enclose within two left and two
right brackets, and separated by semi-colons. You have to read the strings
character by character to hear the arguments.

If you're comfortable using the Terminal command line, you can test out
commands on speech strings by enclosing them in quotation marks, and using the
unix "say" command. Note that embedded commands cannot be used to select a
voice, although the "v" switch of the "say" command can accept an argument for
the voice.

For example, here's the command to get Fred rather than Alex, speaking fast at
slightly boosted volume, with the "say" command. Open up Terminal, paste the
string in, and press "return" to hear the results:

say -v Fred "[[rate 400; volm +0.2]]Am I speaking too fast?"

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
