2013-10-16 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Hey, could someone actually tell me where to go to find that AppleVis
accessibility guide page? I'd love to show that to a sighted friend of mine
who knows hardly anything about Voiceover, but is a dev, and is working on
an app. He's extremely! interested in reading up to be sure from the very
beginning release, that his app works flawlessly.

Lol! Love the foot ball reference. I hand no idea megabus had an ios app!
Yeah! Cool! this will make a trip I'm planning easier to plan. lol!

Anyway back to the subject. I also suspect that it is a UI thing rather
then an all out voice over bug that's global. If some can find out what
control is the item picker, then we can perhaps email them the apple vis
guide on accessibility and tell them which control is giving the fits.

Take care.

Has anyone noticed in I O S 7.02 that Apple in combination with
Voiceover,
broke the ticker items? Now, when there is one, you can't touch the
bottom
half of the screen any longer to get to it... you gotta flick to it.
It's
the only way, case closed. Second of all, once focussed, if you then
one
finger flick up to the next item, you then will completely! lose focus,
then
you gotta flick all? the freaking way back down the screen, find? the
damn
ticker again, then flick again, lose focus, flick down to the ticker
again,
flick, lose focus, etc. etc? You can't just find the thing, and one
finger

shook shook shook shook? This is the most aggervating thing I've seen.
Good luck with tickers that have over a hundred items in them! Yes they
exist. Don't believe me? Go look at the Bard mobile app under
magazines by
title. Yeah, try navigating that for a while losing focus every time,
then
tell me you're not fed up after about 2 minutes. LOL! Oh, and by the
way,
there is no way from the bard web site to add magazines to your wish
list,

so good luck going there on the pc or mac and just putting it there for
later download.

I might have a work around, but I need to test it before I say what it
is.

Still though, is anyone else seeing this? This isn't just Bard Mobile
either. That was only an example. This is happenning globally across
the

whole I O S platform regardless the app.

Chris.

Geoff,

You know? You make an extremely valid point. I honestly never even thought
about that. And, for me being a dev myself, that's quite patheticly
embarrassing for me to admit. LOL! My thing is, I've seen it in quite a
few places, not just BardMobile. For this reason, I guess I just
automatically theorized this to be a global problem. I've not found any
pickers... (pardon the hearing loss problem of thinking it was tickers...)
that work correctly as of yet, but that doesn't mean I won't find one
eventually.

You know what I'm also curious about? I wonder, if I was to grab my
bluetooth keyboard and try with that thing, I wonder if focus would be lost.
Hmm, now you got me curious.

2013-10-16 Thread Geoff Waaler
I can confirm Chris's observation while attempting to peruse Magazines via the
BARD mobile app, however believe this is more of a function of how the
UIPickerViewController in question was coded.

For example, I was trying to bring the international audience into this

Funny I don't have that issue, and they are actually called pickers, not
tickers. All you have to do is find the bottom of the page as that's where they
normally are. I have never yet, key word yet, lost focus on any pickers of any
kind. When I'm done I just flick left to done and the item picker goes away.

Take care.

After being alerted to this problem, I took a look. This is definitely a big
bug with a stinger and a nasty bite. I've seen pickers with hundreds of items
inside, and it makes it impossible not to just figuratively throw the iPhone
across the room. We definitely need to inform Apple.

Work around doesn't Work.

2013-10-16 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
I just tried using the ticker items and doing my work around as I discussed
in the previous message that I sent the list. I was hoping, in I O S when
getting to a ticker item, I could just siply use the item chooser list
instead of flicking through the ticker items one by one, thus eliminating
the need for losing focus and regaining it again. That of corse, to my
luck, didn't work though. So, there went that? idea.

2013-10-16 Thread Christopher-Mark Gilland
Has anyone noticed in I O S 7.02 that Apple in combination with Voiceover,
broke the ticker items? Now, when there is one, you can't touch the bottom
half of the screen any longer to get to it... you gotta flick to it. It's
the only way, case closed. Second of all, once focussed, if you then one
finger flick up to the next item, you then will completely! lose focus, then
you gotta flick all? the freaking way back down the screen, find? the damn
ticker again, then flick again, lose focus, flick down to the ticker again,
flick, lose focus, etc. etc? You can't just find the thing, and one finger
shook shook shook shook? This is the most aggervating thing I've seen.
Good luck with tickers that have over a hundred items in them! Yes they
exist. Don't believe me? Go look at the Bard mobile app under magazines by

Playing media (iPad-pecific feature), navigating text, and notes in iBooks [was Re: Three Questions about IBooks]

2013-10-16 Thread Esther
Hi Chris,

I'll interleave answers after your questions, prefaced with a bullet symbol. I
had problems creating custom notes on an iPad with VoiceOver using iOS 7 (your
last question), which may be an iOS 7 specific bug, and why this reply took so
long. I checked the process of note creation in iBooks on both iPhone and iPad
under iOS 6, to make sure I wasn't leaving out some obvious step, since this is
not a feature I frequently use, but didn't find the "Note" option in the iOS 7
Edit rotor after selecting text.

> I do have a few more advanced questions for you about IBooks, that either you
> or someone else might can answer.
>
> Firstly, you mention about multi-media that's embedded. How does one
> activate those items?

• In iPad-only eBooks created with iBooks Author to contain embedded
multimedia, you can activate the items by double tapping on a play button.
It's a bit like navigating a web page with an embedded video or audio clip that
you can play. I haven't tried a lot of these, so the style of formatting may
differ, from book to book.

> Secondly, in the book that I'm reading, there are hyper links to different
> footnotes or to jump to different sections. Being that the book content area

• You can actually navigate by word or character within the book content area
of iBooks, if you pause your reading (two finger tap) and then set the rotor to
"words" or "characters" and then flick up or down. You can also read by line
(but not by sentence) if you touch the screen and move your finger down. If you
move to a link this way and double tap it you can switch to a linked web page,
or navigate to another part of the book. Try using the "Table of Contents"
button for your book, if such a table is present for your book, and move to a
chapter.

> Finally, is there a way that I accessibly can insert and read my own custom
> notes that I write in the margins of the book?

• OK, I'm rewriting this based on trying to do this on an iPad running iOS 7
with VoiceOver. I can't make this work, and I've gone back to try this on an
iPad running the last version of iOS 6, where it's possible to do this, but
which I still find less easy to do than using my iPhone, because I find the
selection gestures easier to manage on the smaller screen. What I'm finding
different in iOS 7 is that I'm not getting the same range of options once I've
selected a section of text that I want to add a note for once I set my rotor to
"Edit". I don't get an option for "Note" when I flick up or down - just
options for "Define", "Copy", and "Select All". So as far as I can tell, you
can look up a dictionary definition of a selected word, but you can't create a
note in iBooks on an iPad using VoiceOver in iOS 7.02. This is using the latest
version of everything (iBooks 3.1.3 (1929)and iOS 7.02) on an iPad 4. I'll
append the instructions that I started to write, based on how things worked
under iOS 6 when you create a note. I think you're going to need someone who
uses this feature a lot more than I do to walk you through a working
explanation for iOS 7. If you want to hear the rotor options you should have
available, listen to David Woodbridge's podcast from mid-January 2013, where he
demonstrates using the dictionary in iOS 6 by selecting a word or set of words
in iBooks. The only difference is that you'll be selecting a larger section of
text, and selecting "Note" in the edit rotor instead of "Define".

Search the AppleVis podcasts or David Woodbridge's podbean podcasts on using
the dictionary in iOS. Both web pages for this podcast use extremely long names
(that would wrap and break) for the web page URLs. I'll give you a shortened
link to the podbean page:

Alternatively, go to the AppleVis web site and search on "dictionary iOS" under
podcasts.

This is slightly tricky to do, but you can highlight selections within a book
using an inverse pinch gesture. (Refer to the podcast for details.) Then set
your rotor to "Edit" and flick up or down to "Note" and double tap. On the
iPad, this brings up a pop up for entering text. On the iPhone, this will take
you to a page where you are in a text field for typing your note, and where, if
you flick left to the entry at the top of the page, a section of text with your
highlighted selection will appear. There's a "Done" button in the top right
corner of the screen you can use after you finish typing or dictating your
note. I use the four finger tap in the top half of the screen to move focus to
the first element, then flick to the "Done" button and double tap. On the iPad
you tap outside of the note to dismiss the pop up.

You're asking specifically about the iPad, where I haven't used this feature
much, and which doesn't seem as completely integrated with VoiceOver. For
example, on t
