Is there any other way of turning voice over on apart from command f 5?
I am having a few problems with maverick on my 15 inch macbook pro and I have uninstalled it and want to reinstall lion. When I restart the macbook in recovery, I can’t get voice over working with command f 5. This isn’t a problem on the IMac, so I can’t understand why it shouldn’t work on the macbook pro. Does anyone know of any other way of starting voice over please? Ar. Try command fn f5. Without this the f5 key invokes the keyboard backlight hence the command unlikely to work. Re: Is there any other way of turning voice over on apart fromcommand f 5?
If you've done what I think you done, this might not be good, did you completely erase the hard drive? If you did you're going to need a bootable flash drive with the lion installer. If you don't have that, you're going to need a cat five cable to connect to your ethernet so you can completely re-download the operating system. If you don't have that, you're going to have to go to the Apple Store, it's a nightmare but is the only other solution. If you have a backup, you're good. But if not, you're going to be out of luck. I don't mean to make you panic here, but I know I've done this before with the same results that you might be having. Re: Is there any other way of turning voice over on apart fromcommandf 5?
Okay, then Internet recovery is your friend here. For next time, if you don't want to have to go through that, create a bootable USB drive if you can find a way to do so. Not sure how you would do it for lion, as I don't think the installer and other needed necessities are available on the App Store. The only operating system this works for in a modern sense is Mavericks. RE: pairing a Bluetooth keyboard
I remember that when I paired a Bluetooth keyboard under Lion I eventually had to get sighted help as the time out on the Mac Keyboard utility was so short that by the time I had navigated voiceover from the pair button to the part of the screen where I could read out the numbers I was due to enter I could not get them in in time. This may or may not be your issue. RE: Is there any other way of turning voice over on apart fromcommandf 5?
Sarah, can you be a little more specific, as this is something I've really wondered. Are you saying that volume in recovery can go up if you use your command+Vo+left and right arrow to get to volume in your rotor, then go to command+vo+up and down to ajust it? Yeah, I found that in recovery, it's very very low, and frankly, I think Fred is way too soft anyway, which is a shame, as I love! the Fred voice. Some don't, but I personally prefer him in some rare cases over Alex. It's just that I can't use him, as he's too quiet for my taste. Adding titles to music tracks on Mac OS
Hello, I am running the latest version of Mavericks on my iMac. I have several albums in my iTunes music library with a known artist but unknown song titles, mostly classical piano pieces. I recall reading somewhere that there is a service whereby you can submit and unknown track which the service compares with its extensive music library and with luck works out the correct title for the track. Does anyone know of such a service? Many thanks. Re: Somewhat advanced question about server management
Standard functionality of ftp servers is to not allow users to go beyond the root file system that is configured when they log in. If you set the root of the ftp hiearchy to /users/ftp, then nobody logged in as an ftp user will be able to go to your /users folder. This is common practice. If you want users to have access to multiple folders, but not everything, you'll need to setup groups, and set group permissions to allow reading only by users in those groups. If you need assistance figuring out the permissions system, drop a line off list, and I'll help out. --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at either the list's own dedicated web archive: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html or at the public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. Don't feel bad. I can't get my 4s to download my ringtones either. Everything is checked in the right places, but still, no ringtones on the phone. I figure it'll get sorted eventually (or it won't), but either way, it's not worth it to me to reset the phone just to get some ringtones onto the phone. I'll just suck it up and deal. Re: Doing a word count in Text Edit
Yep, sure can. Use an apple script. I've got some posted on my softcon mac pages at http://www.softcon.com/mac/ There's scripts there for word count, line count and (I think) paragraph counts too). hth. Ok, strike that. I went to look, and the scripts are missing. (sorry about that) I'll put them back asap. But, the script you want is this one. ** cut here** tell application TextEdit count words of document 1 end tell ** cut here ** Simply paste this text into the apple script editor, and click run. That'll take the front document in text edit, and print out a word count for you in the output section of the script editor. The one I had on softcon used a dialog to give the information, so it was slightly more user friendly, but since it's missing, I guess it doesn't really matter how user friendly it was now does it. :) I'll get that fixed. --- Mac Access At Mac Access Dot Net --- To reply to this post, please address your message to mac-access@mac-access.net You can find an archive of all messages postedto the Mac-Access forum at either the list's own dedicated web archive: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/mac-access/index.html or at the public Mail Archive: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/. applescript code to count words in text edit
Well, Since I wrote the last reply, I've fixed the issue with the file not found error. But then I decided the script was worse than junk, and rewrote the whole thing. Now it counts words, lines and paragraphs, as well as presents the results in a nice dialog box with the name of the document so you know for sure which file is being counted. I'm not sure it's word counts are all that accurate, as it told me on one of my documents that I had only 605 words, but over 2700 lines, and 94000 characters in the document, so clearly, the word count was off, but It could have been an issue with the formatting of the document, since it was a converted html document. So, there it is. I'd wager it could be used with other editors too, if they support scripting, but I've not tested any, so can't say for sure. hope this helps.
