 Hi All,

For those of you with iOS devices, Cleaner Pro, an app that allows you to
manage and merge your contacts, including removing duplicate contacts, is
free today. It normally lists for $0.99. I've posted about this app
before, so some of you may already have this. The cleaning functions are
also included in the Multiple Edit - Contacts manager app by the same
developer. (that app has now been renamed "Simpler Pro". Here's the App
 Store link:

Yahoo & Outlook (free today, usually $0.99) by Yoni Tserruya

Also, I hope this post shows as being "from: Esther". I had to restore
an iOS and set up mail again, and posting and replies from there seem
erratic. My reply to Eileen came up as from: "Mac-Access" and one reply
went to the original poster instead of the list. Here's hoping this works
 correctly.

2014-01-18 Thread Dane Trethowan
Hi!

The subject of Installing OSX onto a Mac frequently comes up here, I'm in the
processing of doing a clean install so given that I've never attempted this
before I thought I'd see what my Friend Google had to say on the matter.

The following link is just one of a few articles on the topic in a tutorial,
the tutorial is completely interactive which means you can jump to the sections
which suit your specific needs and requirements.

The Install Mavericks is extremely comprehensive and even has sections which
deal with those earlier 2007 model mac machines which won't run Mountain Lion
and above.

Re: VoiceOver and long alt text descriptions

2014-01-18 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI Aleeha,

There's nothing that I can think of which would prevent VoiceOver reading the
alt text on an image in Safari, particularly if you have VoiceOver set to
announce all images. All I can suggest is to experiment with different
browsers. Sorry I can't give you a better answer. Hopefully someone else can.

Cheers,
Nic

Currently, I have a test assignment that I am trying with a Mac
running the latest OS. The question of concern is one in which the
images are tied to radio buttons and are graphs with extremely long
text descriptions in the alt field. VoiceOver, however, won't read
them, even though image verbosity is set to all. The funny thing is
that VoiceOver will read the alt text associated with other images on
the site, but this text is much shorter. To give an example, the
longer alt text might read a bit like this:
"This is a graph of two random curves. The first curve begins at
(-5,7) and continues down and to the right, ending at (5,-8). The
second curve begins at (-2,1) and continues up and to the right,
ending at (4,6)."
All the short alt text says, in general, is "your answer is correct."
Does anyone have suggestions as to how to make VoiceOver read this content?
Thanks,

Re: VoiceOver and long alt text descriptions

2014-01-18 Thread Bryan Jones
Hello Aleeha,

Welcome to the list. This is an interesting question. Are you certain these
problematic long descriptions are coded as Alt text? Are you able to hear these
descriptions using a different screen reader? If you browse through the various
lists of elements in the web rotor (VO+u) and the list of all items as
displayed in the item chooser (VO+i), do you hear them read anywhere? Are you
experiencing this issue on any other websites? Are you able to provide a link
to an example problem so other members of the list can try to troubleshoot?
Have you tried working the site with a browser other than the stock Safari?
I’ve had a number of issues where the current version of Safari will not read
certain items on certain websites, the most common issue being with headings.
Two popular alternative browsers are Google Chrome and Webkit. I’d recommend
trying the latest nightly build of Webkit, which can be downloaded from
webkit.org.

HTH,
Cheers,
Bryan

Re: Cleaner Pro iOS app for Contacts is free today

2014-01-18 Thread Esther
Hi Sarah,

I like the apps from this developer (Yoni Tserruya) a lot, because they're
generally well designed and very accessible. The Cleaner Pto app lets you make
a backup of your contacts, too, which you might want to do before making
changes. If you do a full backup when you start the app, and read through the
details of the saved backup, along with the information that in addition to
saving your backup locally in the app, you can save your backup in Dropbox,
Google Drive, or via email, there will be three unlabeled buttons at the bottom
of the screen. Just keep flicking past the "button", "button", "button", and
you will get the labels "Preview", "Email", and "Saving". You can either
custom label those three buttons with those labels, or just double tap on the
labels instead of the unlabeled buttons that precede them -- it has exactly the
same effect as though you double tapped on the button above the label. That's
the only extra tip I'd give here. I don't even bother to relabel the buttons.

I also like the fact that the app will show you duplicate or missing fields in
contacts and let you decide the action you want to take, rather than
automatically trying to merge.

This is a universal app, and also supports English, French, Spanish, Italian,
German, Portuguese-Br, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Russian, Turkish,
Arabic, and Hebrew.

& Outlook (free today, usually $0.99) by Yoni Tserruya
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cleaner-pro-remove-duplicate/id519077149?mt=8

And I'm happy I sorted the mail setup on my iOS device. (The account
description filed was duplicated under the field for my name.).

Cheers,

Esther

Can you test this under OSX since this is the mac access list you are
writing to. Not the windows list or the techno chat list which are very
wonderful just like this list.

I just took a look at the app and I can say I;m already loving it. The
interface is very easy to use and all of that good stuff.

VoiceOver and long alt text descriptions

2014-01-18 Thread Aleeha Dudley
Hello All,
I am a new member of the list and have a question about working
with images with extremely long alt text descriptions. I am working
with WebAssign, an online homework system, for my Calculus class.
Thanks,
Aleeha

You just have to eirh wait until it movies or from the terminal cd to the
directory where the files are and do an rm plus the file name and hit enter.
You will get no prompt to confirm this, it will just be gone.

Subject: Jawbone Updater

Hello all,

I have the Jawbone software installed for my Jambox. There is a new
version of the software. The updater will appear on screen, but there seems
to be no way to get to the updateer so it will update itself. If I left or
right click on it in the system tray, it does not update itself to the
newest vewrsion of the software. If I try and hit it from the start menu,
there seems to be no way to hit the updater, yet it sill is screaming for an
update of the software. How do ya get there?

Thanks in advance,

Brenda

Taking a Long Time to Move to Trash

2014-01-18 Thread Matthew Chao
Hi, Again, Folks. I just installed Mavericks, and am moving some
large files to Trash. However, I'm finding it takes a long time, and
I can't shut off my Mac properly. How do I speed up the moving to
trash and shut off my MacBook properly? Thanks all over the place.

Cleaner Pro iOS app for Contacts is free today

2014-01-18 Thread Mac-Access
Hi All,

For those of you with iOS devices, Cleaner Pro, an app that allows you to
manage and merge your contacts, including removing duplicate contacts, is free
today. It normally lists for $0.99. I've posted about this app before, so some
of you may already have this. The cleaning functions are also included in the
Multiple Edit - Contacts manager app by the same developer. (that app has now
been renamed "Simpler Pro". Here's the App Store link:
• Cleaner Pro – Remove Duplicate Contacts for Addressbook, iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo
& Outlook (free today, usually $0.99) by Yoni Tserruya
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/cleaner-pro-remove-duplicate/id519077149?mt=8

Also, I hope this post shows as being "from: Esther". I had to restore an iOS
and set up mail again, and posting and replies from there seem erratic. My
reply to Eileen came up as from: "Mac-Access" and one reply went to the
original poster instead of the list. Here's hoping this works correctly.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: Turning Wi-Fi On and Off on My MacBook Pro

2014-01-18 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

Don’t worry about it. If there’s a cable in the ethernet port it will use that
connection. With the newer Macbook’s there’s not a physical switch to turn it
off. During the boot up process the ethernet port will be configured very early
whereas, wireless requires a lot more running processes to function.

RE: Jawbone Updater

2014-01-18 Thread Tommy Craig
I suggest that you remove the updater software from your computer. Then go
and download and install the new version. Once installed go to
http://mytalk.jawbone.com and log in. This should let you access the
updates.

Tommy

Brenda

Hi Esther,

Thanks for including the link in your post for getting the descriptions for the
