RE: Widgets

2014-06-06 Thread David Griffith
It is in some instances but whether it is worth the hassle I am not sure.
If you are interested David Woodbridge from Vision Australia did a podcast
on this a while ago.
http://www.applevis.com/podcast/episodes/mac-basics-35-exploring-dashboard-w
idgets-menu-voiceover

Also last year there was somebody on the MacVisionaries list who was
programming a whole set of accessible widgets for use by list members with
Dashboard but I never availed myself of them. Basically he asked what
people wanted and he tried to program them.

If you googled MacVisionaries mailing list and Dashboard you may find the
downloads he was offering in beta after trying to meet these requests.

In real life I looked at Dashboard briefly but did not personally find it
that rewarding.

Eileen - I would imagine your turntable would have a preamp built-in, to power

that is why I was enquiring about the Griffin, or external sound cards -

2014-06-06 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi,

I tried to post earlier, but I was reading your email in my personal email
account. When reading up on how to connect my turntable to record my LPS into
digital, one article mention either using a preamp or through my receiver. What
I understood was that a computer doesn't have enough power to run the device by
itself. So, I guess that either a preamp or using ones stereo receiver will do
the trick. If I am giving the wrong info, someone please pipe in. The article
was from B and H photo store on their website. HTH.

Powering an external mic: was putting cassettes on to my Mac

2014-06-06 Thread Andy Collins
Ah, This is what I was suspecting, and why I was asking if the Griffin had
preamp capabilities to supply power to the mic. But as it doesn't, then I need
a different solution. I asked in an earlier post if an external sound card
could power the mic, but I got no feedback on that, so don't know so far if
it's an option -

In this case the imic will not work as it does not supply power, but if you can
hook the preamp up to the imic via line in, and hook the mic to fthe preamp you
might get a quieter noise flor.

Take care.

Diffivult to understand what is being said here.

Anyway, I have a sony mic that requires a preamp to give it power, that's why I
was asking about the Griffin. This mic has never worked unless plugged threw a
battery source, or a recorder with a built in preamp for a mic -

As I stated before you have 2 levels, mic and line in. If the mic is somethign
from let's say lab tec and not let's say a shur sm58 or 81 tht requires an xlr
cable or somethign from the sound profs that requres plgu in power you should
be fine.

Ther are no mics that don't use power. All of them require either I think it's
3 or 48 volts tha tis plugin or phantom power.

Take care.

messages going into Important folder

2014-06-06 Thread Mark Furness
This occurrence happens everytime I open email.
No, they are not marked as important, nor do I have rules set up to do this. It
just happens. The messages are also in their proper folder as well.

Every message I send goes into the important folder as well.

I wish to keep the important folder free for when I really do receive an
important message, not to be filled with normal messages.

Interesting thing I learned about extras menu.

2014-06-06 Thread Matthew Carello
Hello all. I was playing around with the extras menu. You know how you have to
do something special to get the drop box menu or say the audio switcher app to
work? Well I tried something else and it worked. I believe it is something
different anyway lol. I am running a macbook air and the latest Mavericks I
went into the extras menu and hit voiceover and clicked the touch pad and it
took me out of it. Now this is where it gets interesting. I went back into it
and hit the voiceover keys and space bar and it made it’s usual sound then I
Hit voiceover keys and clicked the touch pad again and this time it opened the
menus. For both drop box and audio switcher. Just something I thought was kind
of neat.

I haven't seen the mac pros, but when I got my macbook (not a pro) it had
both headphone and microphone jacks on the side, (iirc about 2 inches in
front of the usb port on the left side of the macbook. Unfortunately,
I've not seen a pro, so don't know if their setup is similar, but I'd
wager it's close. I can't imagine apple would remove the microphone jack
from the laptops, but I guess anything's possible.
