Re: Mac Mini RunningML: Various questions

2013-06-16 Thread Cathy
hi Amber,

I have a mac mini and had the same complaints about busy signals as you
describe. Ester wrote a good explanation and gave some links that were very
helpful to me. so I am quoting her message in part for you.

Cathy

Ester wrote:

The most complete answer that I've seen on how to use a Mac mini without a
monitor is written up at John Panarese's Adventures with My Mac Mini blog
article at his Macfortheblind.com pages:
http://macfortheblind.com/?p=591

The key piece of information is the link to the Sewell Direct Sewell TVdeck PC
to TV Converter (VGA to Composite):
http://sewelldirect.com/pc-to-tv.asp
Sewell Part #: SW-23000 Mfg Part #: SW-23000
Price: $29.95

John used that in combination with an Apple Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adaptor (I
think the current product model number is MB572Z/B but you should check that
out for yourself -- the Apple Knowledge Base document on video adapters and
connectors that was last updated on March 1, 2013 indicates that the MB572Z
part number series works world wide for all Mac Minis dating from the Early
2009 model and later, except for machines sold in China,Taiwan, and Korea,
which use the MB570FE part number series.) For that solution you need to buy
the two adapters -- the Apple connector and the one from Sewell direct. There
are also hand-made solutions that involve soldering connector pins on the
output adapter, but this is an off-the-shelf solution you can buy for a total
price of about $60 that is less cumbersome than carrying around a monitor.

Like the others, I do not own a Mac Mini, so I can only summarize the
information that I have read several times on various mailing lists. (I can,
however, if necessary, link you to the original posts by people who owned Mac
Minis and stated what did and did not work for them.)

The issue is not that the Mac Mini cannot be used at all without a monitor
connected, but that when it is used with VoiceOver without a monitor, it is
sluggish, preferences are not remembered, such as automatically starting up
VoiceOver at login, and particularly when internet access using Safari, iTunes,
etc. is activated there is a noticeable performance hit in terms of busy
messages and lack of responsiveness. I've only read of one recent Mac Mini
user, not on this list, who claims that his Mac Mini runs perfectly well
without a monitor. Since this is someone who ordered a fully loaded system
(maxed up on memory, etc.), and is also a new switcher who could not give
comparison performance of his system or any other Mac system's performance with
a monitor connected, I'm not sure how to evaluate this.

aliases VS. copy

hello,

some one talked about creating aliases on the desktop for easy access. I have
seen this option in the menus. I have not used it, because I have simply been
copying folders to the desktop and pasting them in there. so what is the
difference? is one a shortcut and the other a second copy of the
folder/application?

hi Devin,

the mac access site has about 120 books available if I remember correctly.they
range in price from $1.20 to $3. they use paypal for purchase. so if you have a
paypal account or a credit card you are good to go. they take US dollars or
other currency, but I don't remember what other kind.

I am in the process of placing my order and am eagerly awaiting my books which
will be placed on a virtual bookshelf for me to download whenever and however
many times I want.

cannot find the second table in which the bookmarks themselves are stored. . I
have tried interacting with the table, selecting bookmarks menu or another of
my folders, then stop interacting, then with that table, tab around. but when I
tab or use vo and arrow keys all I find is buttons.

so where is that second table? invisible to me, that is all I know

troubleshooting the mac procedure

2013-06-05 Thread Cathy
hello,
I am not having a problem with my mac at the moment thankfully, but i wondered
if there is info out there to explain how to trouble shoot a problem with a
mac. I was reading all the suggestions for some one's problem today and it had
me wondering if there is a step by step process a person might go through to
resolve problems when the Mac isn't acting properly. . I have seen
suggestions here and there on the list, but would appreciate a step by step
procedure to follow. just want to be prepared and have braille notes ready for
the day when I can't get the mac to work and I am about to panic.

thanks, Cathy

hello,

so it sounds to me that my best way to avoid difficulties with my mac would be
to run some clean up utilities to keep things running well?
are there any utilities that come with the mac? if so which are they and are
they , enough for basic clean up or should I get another ap?
?

I noticed some utilities mentioned, but wondered which of these utilities would
be best for the mac, mini, which would be the most effective and most
accessible.

hello,
I am following up on this topic in order to get further help with bookmarks. I

folders plus the ones I just created. but I can not figure out how to open the
folders for history, bookmarks bar and bookmarks menu, and one entitled
unknown, (which I suspect is the transferred bookmarks from another operating
system. so how do I open these folders in order to view, move or delete
shortcuts or bookmarks within them?
I'm sure it is something simple, but darned if I can figure it out.
I did try pressing enter, VO space and command O.

hello,

I have been getting messages telling me that updates are available. when I
click on update it says that updates are available for another account and I
should sign in to that account. however I see no way to do this? I have gone to

why I would not get an automatic update is confusing to me. it sounds as though
the mac is saying that I have two accounts, but when I check my users and
groups it only has one user?

any ideas out there as to what is going on?

steps to use unarchiver?

2013-03-19 Thread Cathy
hello all,

I have downloaded some books from the BARD site, (which is the place where
those of us in the US can download books in audio format from our library.) so
my books are now in my downloads folder and I have located them. when I open a
book, which is a zipped archive it says archiver and shows the files inside.
but now I don't know what to do next. when in my other operating system, I
would extract the files and they would automatically go into a folder with the
same name of the book and then I could move it to an external device for
reading.
thanks for any help.

Re: VIP

hi Zack,

thanks for explaining the purpose of the VIP. I just learned how to do it last
night. now my sister has her own mailbox in VIP. the strange thing is that
there is now a VIP mailbox for me as well. not sure why that happened, I never
set one up for myself. its not as though I would want to be notified of
messages from me? it simply duplicates my sent folders.

so now a question comes to mind, which I could experiment with of course, but
maybe you happen to know already? if I highlight a post from mac access and
create a VIP, will all messages from the list go into that mailbox or only
messages from the individual who posted the message?
thanks,
Cathy

ML 10.8 update problem

2013-03-15 Thread Cathy
Hello,

I began with ML from late 2012.

I updated the software for my ML 10.8 on my Mac mini tonight. Then I tried
to open my mail ap only to get the message that this version of mail does
not work with ML. the ap would not even open so I could check the menu to
see if there was a separate menu item to update mail. now what? Shouldn't
the mail program have automatically updated? I selected the button to update
all available software. If there is something else I must do to update my
mail ap, please give me instructions on how to resolve this problem. only
reason I can even post is because my other unnamed computer is still
limping along.

Thanks, Cathy

Re: ML 10.8 update problem

2013-03-15 Thread Cathy
hello,
the update is various security and bug fixes. details are on the ap store site
when you download and install.

I wanted to thank James for explaining how to repair a disk, this is a handy
thing to know. however, in this instance, my husband found an easy fix. instead
of opening the program from my desktop, he suggested I open it from the
application window. sure enough it worked like a charm. so I sent the old mail
program to trash and copied the mail from the applications window to my desktop
and now I am in business.

columns and I was unable to figure out how to read one column at a time. how
can I do this in this ap, or do I need another ap in order to do this?

Re: iWork programs and accessibility

2013-03-05 Thread Cathy
hi,

I have both pages and numbers.
I have been disappointed with numbers because several of the shortcut keys
have not worked for me. for example, I had some XLS files that numbers opened
up fine, and I could read the first sheet of data, but the command to move from
sheet to sheet has not worked for me.there were other shortcut keys in the help
file that also would not work for me.
I found pages to be very complex too learn, but this could simply be due to the
fact that I am a new Mac user. I also constantly received busy messages from
both aps, but now that I just got more memory installed, perhaps this will no
longer happen. must check into that.

my two cents.

checkbook VS. checkbook pro accessible?

2013-02-03 Thread Cathy
Hello all,

I noticed on apple vis that one person recommended the checkbook pro program
as being accessible. I am considering the original checkbook version for
myself because I do not need advanced features. Has any one on the list used
this version, and if so, how accessible did you find it? I noticed that in
the description of the pro version the comment was made by the company
selling the program that things were not in the menus, and this did not
sound like a plus factor to me, though it was advertised as a plus.

Comments welcome.

Thanks, Cathy

Hi Josh and others,

Well, I suppose shift-command-equals is a command to make the font larger!
So that didn't work, but I did manage to get into the menus this time with
the usual vo-M and found a link to two online manuals for the numbers
program. So I am on my way at last. Sure have a lot of reading ahead of me
however.

If anyone out there knows some commands that they would share privately that
would be greatly appreciated!

RE: pages questions

2013-01-02 Thread Cathy
Hello,

I wanted to thank all who have answered my questions on Pages. Anne thanks
for the answers to all my questions specifically. Andrea, your description
of the insertion pointer was so on target for me. now, after reading your
notes on how it works with the example you mentioned, the light bulb went
off in my brain and I had that great feeling that comes when I finally get
it. I've been practicing with this and still have to think about what I
am doing, but it is great that I know what to do.

Now my next question for you kind folks:

I've been playing around in Pages attempting to select text to move, copy
and paste, and realize that the shift key plus arrows will select characters
and the shift up and down arrows will select lines. Great to know, but how
do I select a word or paragraph.

Next question, when I open pages, I am not placed on the text area, so is
there a VO command to move me there?

Thanks, once again.
Cathy

using the Mini without a monitor

2013-01-01 Thread Cathy
Hello,

I am using the Mini without a monitor, and have learned from this list that
system preferences do not always save. What are some of the other problems
not having a monitor might cause? I will get one of those VGA converters if
necessary but would like first to understand how pressing that is. if it is
only a matter of the function keys, then I would rather save the money.
. I have only had my Mac for a month now and the switch from windows has
given me culture shock, so I don't know what is what right now.

Thanks, Cathy

Hi Devin,
Thanks so much for your quick reply. Actually my husband and I, who are both
visually impaired are sharing our new Mac mini and both learning this OS for
the first time. I've been forwarding him emails and he has decided to join
this list himself because he has different questions and interests than I
do. so you will likely meet him soon!

Anyhow, yes, I do relate to your comment about the lack of need for tool
bars in windows and how in the Mac they are useful. I have been listening to
pod casts from various places to teach myself programs. But I sure do
appreciate your offer to help and will certainly be posting more questions.
At the moment, I have so many, I don't know quite where to start. My primary
interests are in email, Safari, pages and numbers.

Wow, I didn't realize that advertisements were the only things contained in
frames, that is good to know. I will have more safari questions, but will
post them under their own subject line at a later time.
interesting that you got your Mini for Xmas, so did we, but we purchased it
on black Friday and began using it immediately.

Later, Cathy
Who is using her pc now, but will try posting on her Mac when she can figure
out how to edit and spell check better. smile

pages questions

2013-01-01 Thread Cathy
Hello all,

I have a number of questions regarding using this program.

1. I am in pages and have created a new document. I now want to save it. I
press command-D to save and interact with the text to create the file name.
then I stop interacting with that and move to the button to choose where to
save the document by pressing that button, and select my documents, which is
where I want it to go. So I press vo-spacebar to select that. then all there
is left is to press save. However, I want to place my document in a specific
folder in my documents, but don't see how to do that. how do I tell pages to
show me all my documents folders?

2. Another question in pages. There are two delete keys on my keyboard. One
in the six-pack and another on the main keyboard. The problem is that when
editing text in pages, these two delete keys don't appear to always work the
same. Are there specific times when to use one key over the other. What
exactly do each of these keys delete, and is it possible to tell pages to
always delete under the cursor instead of before or after the cursor?

3. Oh yes, that brings up a third question. when I am inserting text, I
can't figure out how that works either. Sometimes it will insert at the end
of a word, sometimes after the character I intend for it to insert before ,
sometimes before the character I intend it to insert after. Perhaps you are
getting the picture that I am a quick typist and often reverse characters
when typing, and if so you are so very right!

what is the default behavior for inserting text in pages?

4. ok, so now I want to select a word to move, copy or delete. What is the
voiceover command for that?

Thanks a lot.

More tomorrow probably.

Cathy

function keys as software keys

now, my function key settings don't stay like I put them,

mine too and it is driving me nuts! Does anyone know why this is? is it a
glitch in the Mac mini? Other settings I've changed stay changed, but not
the function keys. Since I have a full apple keyboard I need these function
keys to work for voiceover.

If it is a glitch I would like to contact Apple about it.

Thanks, Cathy
