[Mac-access]: University reading and DRM on web
Dear All. I am having real problems with my degree and it is stumping my University IT team as well. I am often given links to e books to read. This is the quick method and basically involves opening the document in FRP, allowing the automatic recognition process to complete, and then exporting the resulting text to the desired file format. This quick process works fine for the vast majority of my OCR needs. Note that these instructions are for processing existing digital documents such as PDF files. I also use FRP to interface directly with my scanner for importing scanned paper documents, and I can write up a separate set of instructions for that process if you need them. 1. In the FInder, navigate to the file you wish to OCR. 2. Press VO+Shift+M to open the shortcut menu, and choose “Open with… FineReader Pro. 3. The file will open in FRP and FRP will automatically start the process of “Recognizing” the document. A dialog box provides status information on this process. 4. When the recognition process has completed, you might encounter a dialog box with a message or messages warning you of any problems encountered during the recognition process. Close the warning dialog when you’ve finished reading it. 5. Press Command+S to open the Export dialog. 6. Select the format you wish to export the document to, and adjust any associated options if desired, then click Next. This opens a standard OSX File Save As dialog where you will name the file, choose the location where you’d like it saved, and click the Export button to complete the process. That is just excellent, many thanks to all of you who have written to us. This post is just to let you know what will happen when Gordon creates the new group. As you're subscribed to it, you will be sent an Email just as you were when you joined the group. Despite this, please don't start posting to the new address until we tell you that it's operational. Further, there will be a short outage of service. This is inevitable as Gordon changes the DNS settings for the domains over to the new servers. Usually, your provider will pick up the change quite quickly; but it isn't unknown for it to take between 12 and 24 hours for it to happen with some of the most rigid providers whose DNS systems only poll one of the 13 global NS systems once or twice a day. In the norm, however, it only takes a matter of minutes. Also, it is possible that, if you have used the group at one address in the same session as it changes to a new one, you may get an outage until you reboot. This is because most systems retain temporary caches of name servers and IP addresses so that they don't have to keep continually polling the provider's servers. This happens behind the scenes and, unless you know how to disable or modify this behaviour in your operating system's IP stack rules, there isn't much that you can do about it other than rebooting. Anyway, please don't panic if you see new subscription messages but mail bounces or other odd things happen. Things will settle themselves down eventually and I will make a point of writing to each and every one of you to tell you when the change-over is complete. Talking Newspapers and Voice dream reader
Hi listers Many UK members will also be struggling with the RNIB take over of the TNAUK subscription service for magazines and newspapers. The current system being used by the RNIB crashes my iphone 4s and is ridiculous to navigate within a publication. I thought I would import a magazine into voice dream to see if this helps. It stops it crashing, but I am a newby to voice dream and would like some tips to help me navigate through. Voice dream seems to be able to see the chapter or article I am on, but I can't find any way to browse the chapters or articles so I can go straight to the bits I am interested in. Does voice dream really break down the file into individual articles or chapters? Will this allow me to somehow browse the contents of the magazine? voicestream versus read 2 go
Dear listers, I am sorry for coming in late to recent comments. Some time ago I gave up reading audio daisy books in read 2 go as for some reason it was clipping parts of sentences fairly regularly. I have two questions: 1. Has anyone seen this behaviour improve in read 2 go? 2. Does voice stream also read audio daisy, and if so, is there any problem with clipping? Blackboard
Dear listers, I am looking to do a degree in the new year, as some of you may know. Apparently, a lot of universities in the UK use Blackboard for their virtual learning web site and will be a key part of the resources I will need to use. Beyond voice over basics
Hi listers, I am hoping you can point me towards detailed guides or tutorials that will help me develop a more advanced capability in using voice over on both the mac and in IOS. I am hoping to start a degree next year and I suspect I will need to be much better than I am now. I currently use a bluetooth keyboard on the mac but have not yet paired one with my iphone. I've learned enough shortcuts to get around but see that many other listers use far more advanced techniques when it comes to text searching and editing and using the web. I am hoping to use the time I have to become much more proficient, especially when away from home or using unfamiliar software. Starting afresh
Hello all, My mac mini is showing signs of software age. I am considering upgrading to Mountain Lion from Lion and taking the opportunity to wipe the disk clean. 1. Is the upgrade worth the option - not just for voice over as others use the computer. 2. I am happy that all my data is backed up, but was wondering if there was an easy way to reload all applications. Is it simply a matter of copying back into the apps folder all previously used programmes? 3. Is there an easy way to avoid having to set up all email accounts and other preferences, without re introducing all the software problems I have now? Are there any steps in the above that would require sighted intervention? I hope this multi faceted email doesn't break the etiquette of the list, apologies if it does. Re: proximity sensor?
Totally agree David. I use a long cane, but was thinking a small clip on sensor with bluetooth would be far more versatile than a probably very unstylish pair of glasses. safari reading list revisited
Sorry to come back to this, but I am not getting anywhere in resolving this problem. Despite everything I read telling me that safari on the mac and on the iphone will cache articles for offline reading it doesn't seem to be working for me. I am losing articles when they are deleted from the publishers' servers and I can't access anything in my reading list when airline mode is on. i have searched in vain on the web for answers and have triple checked all the settings in my phone. Re: editing playlists
Hi, thanks for the tip about command and l. It sort of works as long as you uninteract after each instance and then re interact. If you don't do that , the cursor stays on the last song you went to. Sarah, as another way of answering Ian's question, I thought that you could always press Command-L to go to the currently playing track in the songs table. If you started playing it from a playlist, you'd get the other song tracks in that playlist showing up in the songs table, the original playlist you selected would be highlighted in the sources table, and you would be able to edit the playlist contents in the songs table. Mail in Lion navigation
Happy new year to all. I have just installed Lion and am having some frustration navigating the new Mail view. Whenever I delete a message from the message table I am not focused on the next email like I used to be. It seems any key I press throws me to the bottom of my table and I have to scroll all the way to the top again. In snow leopard I could also do this quickly by holding down option and up arrow, but this does not seem to work in Lion either. I am using the wireless keyboard, so do not have home and end functions. I would like to stick with the new view , but may have to go back if I can't sort this out. Re: feedback on Mumeric keyboard for the Mac
Hello David, I do have a bluetooth numeric keypad I no longer want. It worked fine with my old pc, but have not yet tried with my mac. If you are interested I can get help to test it on my mac mini to see if it works. If interested. please contact me off list at harrisonc...@harrisonclan.karoo.co.uk regards Ian On 16 December 2011, at 14:18, David Griffith wrote: A few days ago I posted a question about numeric keypads and the mac. I wanted one as the Ergonomic keyboard i was intending to buy did not have a num pad and I use num pad commander all the time. I spotted a USB numeric keypad on amazon for £7 so decided to take a punt on it. I have just plugged it in an although the Mac was very confused by it and said it did not recognise it as a keyboard it nevertheless works perfectly with Voiceover and the Num Pad commander. I just closed keyboard assistant and all was fine. Although the unit is cheap it does not feel cheap with solid keys with a good travel. The keys have a slightly rubbery feel rather than the polished affect of the Apple keyboards. On balance think I prefer the rubbery texture as there is more friction and less chance of a finger slip.I can now go ahead and purchase a Mac Ergonomic keyboard and hopefully the masses of typing I have to do inn the next 12 months will be a more pleasurable experience. Unfortunately the ergonomic keyboard is not cheap, I think about £130 I seem to remember or about $200 but I think the increase in cropper typing posture and comfort for my wrists shoulder and back will make it worthwhile . Re: Instapaper and Safari
I don't normally clutter up the list with replies, but I must for this extensive piece of advice. Very grateful. On 17 November 2011, at 05:28, Esther wrote: Hi Ian, It's pretty easy to create an Instapaper bookmarklet for Safari for the Mac. For that matter, it's pretty simple to create any bookmarklet for Safari, including the ones on the Google Translate pages. I would create the Bookmark so that it is saved to my Bookmarks Bar. That way, if it is the first item in your Bookmarks Bar, for example, just pressing Command+1 in Safari will activate the bookmarklet. (In the case of the Instapaper bookmarklet, this means saving the current web page to your Read Later list in Instapaper. For other bookmarks, pressing Command+2, Command+3, etc. will take you to the web page of the second, third, etc. bookmarks on your Bookmarks Bar.) You're going to create a bookmark, then you'll copy the link to the bookmarklet on the Instapaper web page, and move to the bookmark in the Show All Bookmarks page of Safari. Using the context menu to edit the URL address you'll paste the link information into the address field of the bookmark you created. 1. In Safari, navigate to the URL of the Instapaper Bookmarklet: http://www.instapaper.com/extras 2. Press Command+D to create a bookmark to this page 3. In the dialog window for creating a bookmark, type Read Later into the text box for the name of the bookmark 4. VO-Right arrow to the pop up menu bar for the location you choose to keep the bookmark, press it with VO-Space, and select the Bookmarks Bar by typing the first few letters (e.g. b or b o) and/or use your arrow keys to move to the selection. Make sure you've chosen the Bookmarks Bar and not the Bookmarks Menu item that is just after it, so you can use the Command+1, etc. shortcut to go to this bookmark. 5. Navigate to the Add button and press it with VO-Space. This adds the bookmark and also closes the dialog window. 6. Navigate to the Read Later bookmarklet. You can either navigate to the Read Later bookmarklet heading, to read the instruction that will tell you to drag to the bookmark to your Bookmarks bar, or navigate directly to the Read Later link for the bookmarklet. (Navigate any way you like with the web rotor set to headings or links, but item chooser menu is always a good option, so you could press VO-I, then quickly type l i n for the links, then type r e a d to find the Read Later bookmarklet link. VO-Space to move to the link. 7. VO-Shift-M to bring up the context menu and choose Copy Link 8. Command+Option+B to Show All Bookmarks in Safari. (Comment: I usually have my Safari view options set so that the Bookmarks Bar is hidden and the Tool Bar is hidden. These options can be set in the View menu on the menu bar, but you can also toggle them between show and hide with Command-Shift-B for the Bookmarks Bar and Command-Shift-Backslash for the Tool bar. This just simplifies using item chooser menu, since you won't get items that appear in the tool bar or bookmarks bar mixed in with your available selections.) 9. Navigate to the Bookmarks Bar item in the table of collections and highlight it by clicking with VO-Shift-Space. 10. Navigate to the table of bookmarks in the Bookmarks Bar by pressing VO-Command-T then interact (VO-Shift-Down Arrow). You should be at the position of the first bookmark in the Bookmarks Bar, which should be the Read Later bookmark you just created. 11. VO-Shift-M to bring up the context menu and select Edit Address 12. Command-V to paste in the link you copied into the address field. 13. Command-Option-B to toggle off Show all Bookmarks and return to your previous web page. Command+Right bracket to go back to the previous page will also work here. You're done, and now whenever you visit a page you'd like to Read Later in Instapaper on your Mac or on your iOS device, just press Command+1 to mark it. Although I usually hide my Bookmarks Bar, on my iPad in the Settings menu I have Safari set so that Always Show Bookmarks Bar has the switch set to on. Then I can just flick to the Read Later bookmark and double tap it. The same principle applies on any web page where you're asked to drag a bookmark to your Bookmarks Bar. Just bring up the context menu to copy the link for the bookmark, then paste it into the address field of the Bookmarks Bar item in question on the Show All Bookmarks page of Safari. This is the general way you can get java script bookmarklets to work -- you just paste the script into the URL address fields via the context menu. HTH. Re: Skype [Revisited]
Hi, I am still using a very old version of skype as i heard there were access issues in later versions. However, i am constantly frustrated that there is no keyboard shortcut to answer an incoming call. Are there any good reason to upgrade from my 2.x version? thanks On 23 October 2011, at 13:18, Mrs. Lynnette Annabel Smith wrote: Hello everybody I've just had a bit of a play with the Skype interface and it seems that with VoiceOver there are a couple of radio buttons and a couple of buttons which aren't accessible or at least which aren't labelled. For example, the radio button which switches the view option between contacts and messages isn't labelled. All you get is Radio Button and Button. I'm sure that it can be used though, there doesn't seem to be anything major that you can't do by other mean. I personally don't use Skype; but I'm sure Gordon wouldn't mind if you added him to your contacts. His ID is mac-access.net. Those of you who had his old ID TFT-bbs, he no longer uses that account so you may as well delete it.
