2015-04-20 Thread Jim Noseworthy

I am configuring a person's iPhone for her but I am noticing that, when

I actually use menu tab in the mac app store. It works and sits in your
extras menu just letting you know if you have notifications. You can hit cmd
f to get to the program quickly and once you are done you can close it with
cmd q or just cmd tab away. It really is a joy to use.

[Mac-access]: Review: Samson C01U Pro USB Mic : AskAudio

2015-02-05 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hello folks:

If anyone is looking for a low-cost excellent USB condenser mic, read on.

 हिंदी
It appears USB mics are now being accepted as potentially good recording
solutions in many home studios. Does Samson's "budget" C01U Pro USB mic defy
its price?
In years past, if someone said “low-priced microphone” to a recording engineer,
he’d immediately flash to the tinny built-in mics in portable recorders, or
those cheap plastic table-top dictation mics that sounded like a voice over the
telephone. Well, that stereotype is long dead, and if any vestige of it
remains, the Samson C01U Pro is the final nail in that coffin!

The Samson C01U Pro USB Microphone.
The C01U Pro is a high-quality USB condenser mic, and despite its budget price,
it delivers the goods—and not only for voice recordings. While it may not be a
replacement for your favorite Neumann, it provides excellent sound, and a high
degree of convenience, to boot.
The Specs
The C01U Pro is an upgraded version of Samson’s original C01U USB mic,
retaining the original’s specs, while adding additional functionality. The Pro
is a large-diaphragm condenser, with a super-cardioid pickup pattern, and a
smooth response.

The C01U Pro's Frequency Response & Polar Pattern.
As you can see from the graph, the on-axis response is commendably flat, with a
gentle rise of around 3–4 dB at 10 kHz—this gives the mic a nice sense of
detail on voices and instruments (like acoustic guitar), and is inline with the
response of most vocal condensers. Directionality is as advertised, and the mic
did a good job of rejecting room noise.
The USB connection
Connectivity is strictly via USB, with a port at the bottom of the mic, where
an XLR connection normally would be. There is no other audio output, and the
supplied USB cable provides not only the audio connection to the computer, but
also power for the mic. Here’s where the C01U Pro exceeds its predecessor. To
enable the mic to function as a one-stop solution for simple recording needs
(like podcasts), this version is also a full USB interface. Not only does the
USB connection bring in the mic’s audio signal, but it offers playback as well,
via an 1/8th-inch stereo headphone jack on the front of the mic. This provides
low-latency monitoring of the mic signal, along with audio from the DAW, and
makes simple recording tasks a breeze—just plug it in and go. Of course, the
mic can also be used for input alone, monitoring normally through the DAW
interface’s outs—both approaches worked fine for me when I tested it out. And
while I tested only with a computer DAW, Samson points out that the mic can
also be used with iPads and iPhones (4S & later) via the appropriate adaptor.
Setting Up
The USB connection is compatible with both Windows and Mac without the need for
external drivers—I tested it on a Mac. As soon as it’s plugged in, the mic
shows up in the System Preferences Sound panel where you can choose it as
either System Input or Output (or both) and set the recording and playback
levels.

The C01U Pro in OS X Sound Preferences.
Even once you close this panel, you can keep an eye on signal levels via a
two-color LED on the front of the mic itself, which lights up green for power,
and red to indicate clipping.
As expected, the C01U Pro also showed up in Logic as an option for Input and
Output, and it worked perfectly whether I monitored through its own headphone
amp, or via my regular interface.

The C01U Pro in Logic's Audio Preferences.
The only wrinkle was a somewhat finicky headphone jack on the mic—the plug on
one set of phones wouldn’t insert properly, leaving me with only one ear
working, though another headphone plugged in and worked without problems
(finicky connections are often the case with 1/8th-inch jacks). Other than
that, operation was seamless.
The Extras
Once again, to make the mic a one-stop solution, Samson has thoughtfully
included everything you’ll need to get going.

The C01U Pro with accessories.
The mic comes with a 10’ USB cable, a swivel mount, a table top tripod stand,
and even a standard thread for connection to a mic stand. These goodies are
heavy, well-made pieces, and provide solid support for the mic, which itself
has a nice heft. The only things not included were a separate pop filter
(naturally the mic has a built-in windscreen) or an external shock mount, but
in use I didn’t feel the need for either—the mic didn’t pick up undue thumping
even on its desk stand, and with the mic just a hair off-axis, I had no issues
with p-pops.
In use
The Samson more than held its own against the higher-end mic, with a warm, yet
clear sound quality.
I tested the C01U Pro with Logic, first recording my own voice, and then
comparing it to an AKG 535 (a vocal condenser mic about 4 times the price of
the Samson). As the audio file shows (Audio Example 1), the Samson more than
held its own against the higher-end mic, with a warm, yet clear sound quali

[Mac-access]: An iPad Question.

2015-01-28 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hello Folks:

I am trying to help a person with her iPad and Voiceover. I have an iPhone
but not an iPad.

The problem is that, if she opens an item, for example Bluetooth settings
under settings, in stead of her speech focused in the Bluetooth setup menu,
it goes back to the Setup menu. She then has to swipe quite a few times in
order to enter the opened Bluetooth settings menu.

Is there a setting on the iPad to prevent that from happening? Is that a
"container" thing?

Thanks all over the place gang.

[Mac-access]: files permission problems in Yosemite.

2014-11-22 Thread Jim Noseworthy

Hi Folks:

Here's the deal: On my Mac Mini, I have two drives; one containing
Mavericks and the other containing a clean install of Yosemite.

I am running PureFTPD server on both drives. I coppied the data
directory from the Mavericks drive to Yosemite. The problem I am having
is that I cannot rename, delete, move, ETC any of the files on my
Yosemite drive. I can, however, do all of these things if I point FTPD
to the Mavericks drive.

I've checked the FTP file permissions and all seems to be well. What
could be wrong and how do I change it.

Call me frugal or maybe just cheap, but I personally think this is one
of those instances where a DIY solution is worth considering. A
cardboard box of the right size can easily be cut, folded and
customized to make a free and flexible stand. Using KNFB’ Reader’s edge
detection, it is relatively easy to determine the height necessary for
your particular iDevice and paper size.

Hello everybody

As you probably know by now if you have your finger on the pulse of
virtualisation technologies, the battle of the giants is really hotting up
now. As somebody who is fortunate enough to be able to evaluate both
Parallels Desktop 10 and Fusion Professional 7 in fully licensed modes, I
can tell you that there is a really noticeable speed increase in both of
these products with the release of Apple’s latest technologies and APIs
build into the operating system to make it both Mavericks and Yosemite
compatible. I am currently running Windows 8.1 Professional under Fusion 7
and Lynne is as I write finishing off the setup of the sane operating system
under Parallels. By the way, we’re going to make it easy for anybody who
wants to download the new evaluation of Fusion, if, that is, there’s any
demand for it. We will post it in an accessible place and let you grab it
at your heart’s content.

That aside, I can honestly say that running Fusion now with this new version
is just like running Windows in a native environment. They’ve obviously
done a lot of fine tuning and the result is staring me in the face right
now. And it honestly could not have come at a better time. Just as we’re
expanding what we’re offering to our clients and friends, (more about that
soon), so this comes along.

Actually it was released on 2 September, but I just didn’t get around do
doing anything about it until now. All I can say is “Wow!”

Anybody want it made available for download?

Gordon

VoiceDream File downloading issue: very interesting.

2014-08-25 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hello Folks:

I am currently running the latest version of the paid version of VoiceDream on
an iPhone 5S with the latest IOS update.

Here is my issue:

Using VoiceDream’s browser with VoiceOver, I am able to locate the zipped DAISY
book and, when I dubble tap and hold on the “download” button, one of the
options is to “open”. When I dubble tap on “open” I received a message that
the file is downloading and, it shows up in VoiceDream and all works as it
should. Once again, all of this is accomplished from the VoiceDream app itself.

My problem is, that I am not able to duplicate this on other iPhones; it is
necessary to use a third party downloading option – as the mannual states.

I have removed all file management apps from my phone and still, VoiceDream
downloades and opens the zipped DAISY files.

Question: why does this work on my iPhone and not on other iPhones?

If someone could forward this message to the Viphone group for me, I would
appreciate it. Apparently, I am band from sending emails because of some
infraction or another. I can, however, receive emails.

Thanks all over the place.

Have you checked to see if yoru mac's firewall is blocking it? This I can't
tell you how to do as I have never had to unblock anything from the mac's
firewall it's that good.

Take care.

go to the book marks manager with cmd option b and go to the bookmarks bar
table. Now expand it and remove any book marks you don't want in the book
marks bar. This is how I've done it since snow lepherd and it appears to
work in mavericks.

Re: Announcing a revolutionary remote for iOS VoiceOver users

Subject: Announcing a revolutionary remote for iOS VoiceOver users

Hi everyone,

I'd like to introduce a small product our company makes for Apple iOS
VoiceOver users. It's called RiVO. We have seen blind people use their
smartphones quite well with RiVO. I'm trying my best to make people know
about the availability of this product from a land far away.

RiVO is a revolutionary keyboard-like remote for Apple iOS VoiceOver users.
The name stands for Remote interface to VoiceOver. Being about the size of
a credit card, it is highly portable and yet comfortable with big keys.
There are 12 keys in the middle just like telephone keypad, and there are 4
additional keys on the left and on the right, respectively.

VoiceOver is an innovative technology from Apple and you can enjoy it like
a breeze with RiVO. You can also type and edit text fast and easy, control
music simple and handy. These features enable RiVO users to use a greater
number of apps every day compared to VoiceOver users without RiVO. RiVO
supports iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. Android TalkBack is another
innovative technology from Google, and Android version of RiVO is also
available.

More information about RiVO can be found at http://mobience.com/rivo and
http://facebook.com/rivo.page. I hope RiVO is a convenient accessory to
help you find, explore and enjoy the possibilities of your smart devices
and fabulous apps out there that make your life easy.

Let me list some of the comments from RiVO users around the world:
- RiVO is the most accurate and efficient tool for the blind to use
smartphone.
- I have 275 apps on my iPhone and RiVO is really valuable and helpful.
- Alphabet typing becomes extremely fast with RiVO.
- RiVO is a must-have accessory that many blind people will appreciate.
- I have RiVO with me all the time.
- Getting beyond different levels of the gestures are extremely faster with
this keypad.
- RIVO's smallQWERTY is superior to the old method of alphabet entry.
- I use iPhone and RiVO every day, all day long.
- RiVO is an indispensable accessory to the blind.
- RiVO enables me use my iPhone precisely and quickly while on the move.
- RiVO makes me use my iPhone without having to be conscious of the
surroundings with my gesture actions.
- RiVO gives me the convenience and freedom to use iPhone just like those
who can see.
- We really love this wonderful keyboard that you guys have made usable for
us!
- I love my RiVO! I keep it in my pocket all the time.
- I am very happy with the keyboard's performance on both of iOS and
Android platforms.
- RiVO can provide relief to many users who are struggling with touchpad
interface.
- We were working with a customer who is blind, can only use one hand, and
has cognitive disabilities. RiVO gave him better access than he had ever
had before to a desktop or iOS device.
- RiVO will become a true part of my iPhone experience, and will make the
iPhone so much easier to use. You have brought a wonderful device into our
lives.
- This little gadget will definitely change the way I work with my iPhone.
My right arm is feeling better already.

Thanks and best wishes,

Ein Lee, RiVO Team, Mobience Inc.

When you turn on file sharing, you are using smb. Below is the steps to use:

1. Open preference.
2. Go to sharing.
3. Activate the "lock to make changes" so you can modify your sharing
profile.

4. Move to the service table.
5. Move through the table and select "file sharing".
6. Move to the option button and activate it. In this dialog you can turn on
AFP, SMb and find out which accounts have access to SMB.

7. Turn on smb and then go to the done button.
8. The remaining options permit you to share specific folders and adding
users that you permit to access your computer. You can also add share points
as well.

Once you have SMB turn on with file sharing, then the window user can use
the computer. AFP only works between MACs.

Hello,

In preferences, turn on sharing for your Mac and permit access to your

they could use your own account. You can also control what they can see.
Such as only the public directory from your account. I hope this helps.

Hi Jim — Three questions:
1. Do you mean listing podcast episodes that have not yet been downloaded to
your Mac, episodes that have already been downloaded, or both?
2. Where are you wanting to see/manage your podcast episodes? FOr example,
iTunes, Finder, the Downcast Mac App, Safari, etc?
3. Do you simply want to see a listing of episodes, or are you wanting to do
more such as alter the sort order, add or delete episodes, etc?

Hello Jim,

Posting this again, since apparently my reply went to Leo, rather than the
list. (Grrr. have to figure out how to reconfigure my devices).

I thought that the holiday calendar was selected automatically once you
selected your region and languages under System Preferences > Language &
Region. For example, if I change my region from "United States" under the
region pop up button to "Canada" by first selecting "Americas" and the
Canada, examining the Calendar for the week of Christmas will show an entry
for "Boxing Day" on Thursday, December 26, 2013. There will be a note that
this event belongs to calendar " Canadian Holidays".

As for adding different types of calendars pre-Mavericks. There's an
iCalShare web site mentioned at AppleVis that lets you download specific
holiday and sports calendars and share them on line. That works all the way
back to Snow Leopard. The URL is:

http://www.icalshare.com

Apple also has a set of downloadable iCal calendars at:
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/calendars

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

configuration. So Eric's podcast was about how to implement this new feature
when using KeyRemap4MacBook along with a second application at the same site,
PCKeyboardHack. It wasn't meant to be a general podcast about how to remap
keys with this software.

KeyRemap4MacBook may be downloaded from:
http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/

KR4MB (to abbreviate the name) is a donationware program that is a general key
remapper for all keyboards used with Macs - not just MacBooks or Mac laptops.
By donationware I mean that the program is free to download, but if you find
it useful it's suggested that you make a small donation to support the
continuing development. If you want to read more about the details of using
this software, here's a link to my archived list post from the summer of last
year:
• NumPad on laptop Macs and KeyRemap4MacBook:
http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg12382.html

The quick explanation of the default behavior of KR4MB is that installing this software
will let you use the keys on the right side of the keyboard, where there is normally an
embedded Numeric Keypad enabled with a NumLock key on Windows laptops, as a Numeric
Keypad when you press those keys in combination with the "Fn" key. If you
don't want this behavior, you can disable it by unchecking a box in the software, and you
can just use the other remapping options. But what is very slick about this for
VoiceOver users is that the activated embedded NumPad can work with all the NumPad
Commander keyboard shortcuts that you can customize, and will work correctly with all the
modifier key definitions (e.g., with additional presses of the Command key, or Shift key,
etc.)

The main difference in using the program now is that the menus I described were
included inside the program when the next major version update was released, so
they're not associated with a preference pane outside of the program any more.
Also, the developer incorporated Eric's requested customization into that (and
subsequent) releases, so you no longer have to get the special version of KR4MB
that he described in his podcast or its notes.

The program's web site does contain full information. it's just that this
information is laid out in the more minimalist style of documentation that
Linux users will recognize. So my archived post gives some details about the
most efficient ways I found of navigating the options with VoiceOver.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Remote access to a Mack via Teamviewer Information.

2013-11-29 Thread Jim Noseworthy

Yo Folks:

For those who may not know: the secret for using a remote connection to
a Mack Via TeamViewer is to turn Voiceover off on the controling
computer. The VO key commands are then passed through to the host
computer. That makes sense because the key combinations are not being
intersepted. This also seems to work perfectly controling a Mack from a
PC with the speech on the pc being disabled.

AwesomenessCoolness.

Hi Jim, Josh, Dane, and Others,

I'm pretty sure that you can make these key reassignments with
KeyRemap4MacBook. Josh, Apple used to make full-size Bluetooth keyboards, but
that was quite a while ago. I imagine that if Jim is asking about a Desktop
Extended USB keyboard that might be connected to an iMac, for instance, that
the assignment of function keys F13 through F19 could just be done under
Keyboard Shortcuts under your System preferences for the Keyboard.

I don't remember whether Dane was reading the lists late last year in August
and September, but there were discussions about using KeyRemap4MacBook. In
default installed mode, this gives you access to a numerical keypad where the
embedded numerical keypads used to appear for Mac laptops (and also PC laptop
keyboards) using the right hand side of the keyboard, when these keys were
pressed in combination with the FN key. What was more interesting is that the
full set of NumPad Commander custom VoiceOver definitions can be then be used
on a laptop keyboard, or with an Apple Wireless keyboard -- including with all
modifier key prefixes.

KeyRemap4MacBook can also remap third party keyboards, and be configured so
that the custom key remappings only apply to the native keyboard, to keyboards
used under VMWare Fusion, to Bluetooth keyboards, and to specific third party
keyboards, or any combination of the above. And despite the name, this
software application can be used for any Mac keyboard -- not just laptops.
Eric Caron went on to post an AppleVis podcast and set of directions on how to
remap the VoiceOver key combination (Control + Option) to the Caps Lock key,
and to use the Caps Lock key under VMWare Fusion as the Insert key using
KeyRemap4MacBook.

There are also some keyboard manufacturers, such as the Canadian manufacturer
Matias, that make third party keyboards for the Mac in both the extended and
laptop varieties. Matias is probably better known for its support of the ALPS
type keyboards favored by some older PC users over the flatter, chiclet type
keyboards currently used on Mac laptops and on the Apple Wireless keyboard.
They also have a Bluetooth laptop keyboard which has the ALPS type key action
(clicky feel and larger travel when keys are pressed), but with basically the
laptop layout (and a few extra dedicated keys for Page Up, Page Down, and
forward delete), and with the F-keys separated both from the other key rows,
and grouped in sets of four. These are, however, more expensive keyboards, and
the cheapest price I've seen quoted for the Matias Laptop Pro for Mac keyboard
is $147.95 (with free shipping) for this Bluetooth keyboard. (It lists for
$169.95).

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
