Re: [Mac-access]: VM access

2015-04-20 Thread Ray Campbell
Hi Doug:

I’m running a MacBook Pro with VMWare Fusion and Windows 7 64-bit with very few
problems. When I first bring up the Windows side, I notice that both booting
up and running programs, the first time things are a little slow, but then
things get faster. I’ve got both JAWS and Window-Eyes and as I said, don’t
have a lot of trouble.

The biggest issue I’ve had with running with a VM is mapping keys. I use
SharpKeys for that and find it very accessible.

Hope that helps,

Accessing Nitrous.io Development Environment

2014-09-30 Thread Ray Campbell
Hi All:

As I indicated a week or so ago, I’m taking a software projects class where I’m
needing to access Ruby on Rails development. Well, here’s another question.

My project team wants to use Nitrous.io, a cloud-based development environment
to house our code. Nitrous has a desktop environment which doesn’t appear to
be accessible via VoiceOver or via either JAWS or Window-Eyes on Windows. I
can’t access sign-on controls or buttons to do things with the desktop
environment.

I want to know if anyone has any ideas on how to access the nitrous environment
in order that I can work with our code on Nitrous? I’ve generated an SSH key
and can use SSH to get into our Nitrous box. However, once there, I’m not sure
what I can do to edit pieces of code. Any ideas would be appreciated. I can
access command line things which will be important.

Thanks,

Ray Campbell

Hi,

You should download Textmate 2.0 Alpha. It says on the page that it is
not alpha functionality-wise, but they're calling it alpha since the
documentation isn't yet complete.

Using Ruby ln Rails with VoiceOver

2014-09-18 Thread Ray Campbell
Hello All:

I’m taking a Software Projects class this quarter (the last class before I
finish my Bachelor’s Degree, yay). The object of the class is to plan, design,
develop, test and deploy a software project, working on a team.

My project team wants to use Ruby on Rails for our development. Here are some
questions:
1. In studying a tutorial on ruby on Rails, it looks like I’d need to work in
the terminal application on my Mac. Does anyone have any tips for easily doing
this with VoiceOver?
2. Are there better, more voiceover friendly terminal apps I should consider
using such as iTerm? I downloaded and installed Go2Shell, but it seems to just
open a terminal window in the current folder.
3. What would you recommend I use as an editor to write my Ruby on Rails code?
I’ve seen references to Sublime and Textmate. Are any of those accessible
with VoiceOver? Could I use TextEdit for this?

Thanks, your help would be greatly appreciated.

Yep. you encountred the ios refresh bug that a lot of us have reported with
ios7.1.1. The trick is to run your finger down the screen and scrowl. It
will keep yoru place then split tap on nv. then just tap except changes.

RE: IOS 7, probably the most buggy I've ever seen yet!

2014-05-07 Thread Ray Campbell
Hi Chris:

Two other things I've noticed since updating to IOS 7.1.1. First, I should
tell you my wife's iPhone 5 didn't update properly and we had to connect it
to iTunes and do a restore/update to 7.1.1. She lost several contacts as a
result of it.

Onto the two bugs. First, on my wife's phone when she sends a text message
using the dictate feature, the VoiceOver volume goes down. She has a mild
to moderate hearing loss and this can be problematic. The only way she's
gotten the VoiceOver volume to come back up to where she had it is to make a
phone call.

Second, on both of our phones, we've notice when playing the DiceWorld app
games while using headphones, we don't hear the game's sounds.

Thanks,

OK, I've been using I O S since I O S 3.X if that tells you anything. So,
needless to say, I've really seen Voiceover evolve, and I O S evolve as well
in general.

I've always loved I O S. Never have I shamed it like some techy snobs do
who feel like it's too locked down, get Android, Ajpple wants to cheat
people, yoddie yodda. I'm sorry. I don't think one mobile platform's
better than the other. They both have their plusses. However...

This being said, I must say, this last I O S 7 update, at least on my IPhone
5S has almost caused me to reconsider that above statement. I'm not saying
that these bugs are happening for everyone, and before anyone asks, yes, I
have indeed restored to factory default, and not even rolled back from a
backup, and it did no good.

Siri

Siri has become more of a joke lately than it has a help. Even in a quiet
environment, half of the time, Siri not only doesn't hear me correctly, but
a lot of the time, she doesn't even hear me at all. A lot of times, even
when the phone is not even close to my ear, and the proximity sensor isn't
even remotely close to being covered up, it still routes Siri through my
earpiece rather than through my loud speaker.

Ring VS Vibrate

This hasn't cropped up until recently, and it's extremely rare, but it does
happen, thus, I do have to document it. Even when my mute switch is
disabled, meaning, my phone is not on silent mode, the phone still only
vibrates. I don't even have vibrate enabled under settings>sound unless
it's in silent mode.

Alarm Clock

Thank God for 3rd party apps, as I cannot seem to get my alarm clock
working anymore. I think it may have worked once and once only since the
latest 7.1 build update.

Touch ID

I'm finding that half of the time, scanning my finger print produces the msg
to try again even though my finger is dead smack centered on the home key.

Connectivity

Almost constantly! I lose internet connection. My wifi itself never
disconnects, however the dhcp seems to quit being auto detected. No, it's
not a router issue, as none of my other non I O S devices have this problem.
Yes, I tried resetting network settings, and it did no good. Yes, I reset
the router. No good. Yes, I changed the wifi channel. NO good. Yes I
changed the wifi protocol. NO good. Yes I changed the SSID. NO good.
Yes, I updated my router to the most recent firmware. NO good. Even on
LTE/4G, I find my internet going away almost constantly. Even a reset by
pressing and holding lock and home together does no good. Resetting the
springboard with a quintupple rapid press of the lock key doesn't work
either 3 fourths of the time. I literally have to shut the phone off, wait
about a minute, then turn it back on, and usually! key word, usually! it
regains internet access at that point. I find that bluetooth is
disconnecting more frequently, and the dis tance range isn't near as good.
I get no more than 10 feet away, and it usually poopoos out.

Audio quality with Voiceover

Ever since the 5C and 5S have come out, I've found that turning up the
volume really high causes distortion in both models. Well, as of the latest
7.1 update, I'm finding that it's gotten ever so slightly worse. It's very
suttle, but I can definitely tell from 7.0 to 7.1 it's gone down hill. Plus
it sounds way more compressed even on the high quality premium voices.

Bad pronunciation

Now, we have this issue with Symantha saying Convella instead of convert.
What the bloody heck! Apple said they'd fix it, yet, I've not seen a fix.

On the plus side

I will! give Apple credit on one thing. T

RE: Apple's Xcode tutorial

2014-01-09 Thread Ray Campbell
Hi:

There's also a textbook, "Beginning IOS Development" available on Kindle
through the Kindle app that is pretty good. I just completed a mobile app
development class and as my time allows, I want to get more into the Apple
Development and see if I can develop a few things.

Laurel, the thing I found totally unusable was the iPhone Simulator on
XCode. When you test your apps on XCode, a simulator comes up where a
developer can test out the app functionality and see if things work. I
couldn't use that with VoiceOver. So, I had to get myself over the fear of
putting test software on my iPhone to test things.

Thanks,

Hi Laurel and Jeff,

Sorry Laurel, I must have missed your original post over the Christmas
period. I more or less tuned out of all email for about two weeks.

I tried that tutorial a while back and got lost. It’s probably my
background and training, but I always seem to have more luck following books
rather than tutorials. If you’re a bookshare member, they have plenty of
XCode stuff. Indeed, all oreilly books are there by default.

Here’s an offer for you: if you want to take a look on sites like:

www.oreilly.com
www.informit.com
www.apress.com
www.bookshare.org

you might find books you find interesting. The first thing I’d do is start
by learning the Objective C language. All cocoa apps are built on this, and
a knowledge will help you. Anyway back to my offer: If you find books that
you think might be of use, either post here or contact me offlist and I’ll
happily take a look for you and tell you what I think.

I’ve not done app development, but I’ve written utilities for mac. I’m a
university academic who teaches programming (among other things) so I’ve
needed to know the basics. App/application development is my study gig for
the next few months as I suspect I may get a course in mobile development to
teach next year.

Definitely look at MV-Dev. It’s a nice community and nobody gets flamed for
asking anything.

Hope these ramblings help,

Dónal

StoryBoards and InterfaceBuilder were pretty much unusable with VO.
Recently, the MV-DEV list has come back to life, and apparently there are
blind developers who are successfully exploiting these xCode features. I
have a lot to learn before I get out of lurking mode over there, but the one

More on XCode

2013-10-21 Thread Ray Campbell
Hi All:

First, thank you to Jan for writing up a sample Xcode project to show how to
connect interface elements to code, and to Josh for describing how to connect
objects using XCodes interface builder. I have gotten the Interface Builder
process to work for me, with one exception. When trying to connect a button, I
get the popup window where I can give it a name and stuff. However, the popup
button in that window where I should be able to change type from Outlet to
Action shows as Dimmed in VoiceOver, so I can't change it to action. Any
ideas? Running Xcode Version 4.63 on a MacBook Pro with Mountain Lion.

Thanks, Jan. i really like working with xcode. Where can I find some

Seeking Help with XCode

2013-10-08 Thread Ray Campbell
Hello All:

I'm taking an IOS App Development course and need some help with XCode. I'm
running XCode version 4.63 on a MacBook Pro with OS 10 Mountain Lion and use
VoiceOver.

In Interface Builder in XCode, I'm able to find and place controls on my
view. However, I'm having trouble connecting the controls to code reference
outlets. I tried the instructions from maccessibility.net, and while I can
drag the control over to the file it needs to go in too, I can't enter the
name into the window that's supposed to pop up in XCode, even though
VoiceOver gives me the message "XCode has new window."

Anyone have any ideas of how I can make these reference outlet connections,
either using the GUI or in code?

Thanks,
