Re: [Mac-Access]: enough!

2015-05-25 Thread gs
In the interest of continuity, if the list owner cannot run the list, it
probably needs to be migrated to a general email list service provider where
service is relatively free of uptime issues such as we have experienced and
transferred to another list administrator who has the time to dedicate to it. I
cannot comment on any other services being hosted by the owner.

This list has many dedicated contributors and it would be a shame to lose it
simply because of the inability to configure a personal server. These services
are basically available similar to home appliances these days. There is not an
awful lot of configuration necessary to simply administer an email list in
2015. It's quite uncomplicated. With Google Groups, Yahoo, and many other
services such as publicly available Mailman and other list managers, there is
no need to go through painful singular configuration to make an email list
quite functional and responsive without constant user surveys related to
whether migration is desired, etc. Maybe some of the frustration is related to
the apparent lack of automation of the user-based administration of list
subscription and configuration options that are quite expected on most email
lists. Spectacular server crashes are a thing of the past of the proper backup
procedures are in place. I used to administer a list of approximately 700
subscribers with about four hours per week of dedication. That certainly can
vary and I'm not necessarily trying to draw a direct comparison.

I hate to post this directly to the list since I know it's not proper etiquette
but I'm frankly tired of getting the long-winded depositions about the status
of something that really shouldn't be a problem or the cryptic meanderings
about anticipated/unanticipated issues with services unrelated to this list
that I don't care about.

Services related to the list should probably be separate from any web hosting
ventures if the reliability is going to be so suspect. This should not be quite
as complicated as it seems to be. Backup the user database on a schedule and
change providers accordingly, if necessary., and hopefully very infrequently

I know what it's like to run into issues with administering a list. At this
point, it seems to be a little unreasonable. It should be an extremely rare
occasion when you can't get an immediate backup of the list subscribers but
must continuously poll the list for who is subscribed and who wishes to remain.

My suggestion is to shoot for some continuity for a while using whatever
mechanism will accomplish it and restore the faith of the subscribers. Things
have become a little strange here.

Right now, when I visit mac-access.net http://mac-access.net/, I am
confronted with a raw
incarnation of SurgeMail. Jack of all trades is master of none and I'll stay
subscribed unless I anger the owner and he actually takes the initiative to
manually unsubscribe me. Nevertheless, I'm sick of the duplicate messages,
general unreliability, and misadministration of this list.

I understand that there may be legitimate reasons why there have been problems
but we're all still here. If it's not working and is not going to work, let
someone handle it who can do so. Web hosting and other services are unrelated
and should not be addressed here unless the subject applies to most
subscribers.

I have tremendous respect for those who cull through the countless spam and
other
administrivia required to manage a healthy email list. Right now, this one does
not appear to be healthy.

Brian -
Is your VMWare Fusion updated to the most recent version? Unfortunately, JAWS
and Windows using a virtual machine isn't quite as good a performer as with
bootcamp. However, I really do not tend to encounter the issue you mention very
often at all. It did occur more frequently in the past but Fusion updates have
improved it.
I have tinkered with the amount of memory allocated to the VM and have found
that, for me, 4 GB works well. I have dedicated one processor core. This is on
a Macbook Air mid-2013 with 8 GB of total memory.

I am using VMWare Fusion Version 6.0.6 (2684343).

You have probably purchased version 7 since you are a new user, so this is
obviously going to be a difference.

Hi

Following my earlier message, I went ahead and installed Windows on the Mac

While there are work arounds for the keyboard which I can carry out, what I
cannot live with is the occasional dropout in audio. Sometimes, the screen
reader will miss the first syllable of a word for example. I did allocate
what I thought was enough memory for the Windows side.

My questions are:
If I get a USB soundcard to connect to it, is this likely to resolve the
problem, or is this just one of the consequences of running it in a virtual
machine?
Is there a way of using the virtual machine configuration and convert it to
bootcamp instead or do I have to start over and install again from the DVD
media I have?

Thanks for any help.

Re: [Mac-access]: Bootcamp V. VMWare Fusion

2015-04-27 Thread gs
Disk space can be adjusted so there is no need to allocate more than necessary.
with regard to Fusion

When I first switched to the Mac, I was convinced that I would really need
bootcamp so I got everything ready, setup the bootcamp so that it was ready for
the Windows install, and headed off to the Apple Store to try to get them to
help me. I was able to do so but it was with reluctance. They told me they
were not supposed to help me install Windows, and I think if I had not been
completely prepared, they would not have done so. I wouldn't count on that kind
of assistance, and I doubt it has anything to do with whether one is in the UK
or anywhere else. Still, it might be worth a try if you are desperate which I
was.

Before I installed bootcamp, I had purchased VMWare Fusion since I knew I could
install Windows unassisted. So I already had Fusion and Windows running. I
admit that the bootcamp version of Windows ran better than the virtual machine,
but the virtual machine runs well enough and has improved with updated versions
of Fusion.

Within a month or so, I decided to remove the bootcamp partition for two
reasons: 1. I have a Macbook Air with only 256 GB of SSD, and 2. I really like
the ability to use both the Mac OS and Windows simultaneously. This was more
important than the ability too boot into Windows. So I removed bootcamp to
reclaim some space. I generally have not regretted removing the bootcamp
partition. Fusion works well enough for my Windows. needs

On Apr 27, 2015, at 4:32 PM, David Griffith daj.griff...@gmail.com wrote:

Personally if I started from scratch on a new Mac I would not bother with Boot
Camp and would rely upon Fusion.
I think it is 2 years since I booted into Boot Camp.

Having said that there are some reasons why you may need Boot camp.
1. Hardware support. It is possible that some hardware will not necessarily
play nicely with Fusion. Mainstream devices should be fine but for example I
could never get my specialist VIP hardware EyePal scanner to work under Fusion.
As I now use this on a Windows machine this does not matter for me but may be
an issue if Fusion is your only Windows option.
2. Resources. Actually I find a Fusion Virtual Machine pretty fast on a Mac but
theoretically all resources are available to a Boot Camp install so should be
more powerful. However as I say my Fusion installs seem fast enough and
certainly boots up faster than Boot Camp. I would recommend that if you go the
Fusion route you modify at the outset the Ram and processor cores available to
your Fusion VM as the default is pretty skimpy. Actually if you go the Boot
camp route you should also increase the max disk space allocated as this is
also skimpy by default.

It is important to in Fusion that you settle down your processor core and
memory allocation at the beginning as otherwise this will create possible
activation issues for your windows install and certainly Jaws. I routinely use
NVDA until this is all sorted out.

I like the idea of having VMWare, so I can flick between different

Re: [Mac-access]: Iphone 5 or 4S

2015-04-18 Thread gs
I don't think the recall was strictly because the battery originally had a poor
life. I think it may have been because its life decreased more quickly than it
should have.
When I got mine replaced approximately a year into use, I noticed a real
difference. I used it heavily enough that I needed to charge daily. I still
needed to charge daily with the replacement phone, but it was a little better.
I used that phone for an additional year before upgrading to the 6 Plus. The
battery life is definitely much, much better with the 6 Plus.
As an example, with the 6 Plus and a full charge, I can use BARD mobile for an
hour and the charge still reads 100%. The 6 Plus seems to be really efficient
at certain functions like playing audio.
However, there are certainly features of the 5S that would make me choose it
over the 5 if I had a choice right now. The 5S processor is better and
supports 64-bit and it also has a fingerprint reader.

I'm sure the replacements we were getting for the iPhone 5 were reconditioned
so I don't doubt that someone may have gotten a battery that worked more poorly
than the one it replaced. But for me, the replacement came at just the right
time because I was starting to have to supplement my daily charge with a few
sips throughout the day.

I can sometimes use the 6 Plus for two days and still have 40 percent or more.
However, if I use GPS/location services, that is definitely not the case. As I
mentioned, I think there are certain functions where the 6 Plus and probably
the 6 as well are really very efficient. And there are other areas where
battery drain is extreme.

But if I had a choice between a 5 and 5S right now, I would choose the 5S
without a second thought.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say the battery life on the 5S is not
good. I have a 5S, and my battery last me all day with pretty heavy use.
Also, I have a for S, and the speed of the 5S is noticeably better than that

other depending on the memory only. My experience simply does not bear that

The whole 5 series is no better than the 4s you have unless the 5 series

Re: [Mac-access]: IOS: copying text from webpages using voiceover and IOS 8.2

2015-03-26 Thread gs
You can also copy selected text by pressing the Share Button in Safari. This
eliminates the need to use the rotor to select. edit. Either the suggestion
from Applevis or Share will work.

Also, it's really nothing to do with Safari acting differently than any other
app with regard to how VO works. Four three-finger taps will only copy the
last chunk of text spoken. It will not copy an entire page if its markup is,
say, several paragraphs.

 Thanks for the suggestions.

Last night I was able to get some pieces extracted, but it the amount
selected was inconsistent and unknown until pasting.
Put your finger near the center of the text that you wish to select, and
double tap and hold until you hear the sound. It is similar to moving an
app. A popup will appear on the screen, with the choices define and
copy. Double tap on copy, then paste into your file using the editor from
the rotor, or tap and hold on the area you wish to paste the text.

Let me know if pressing the zoom button works for you. It definitely does not

It is possible for the drawer to be set to show on either the left or the
right. Unfortunately, I cannot remember which it it is set to by default.

The reason I am mentioning Command D is not to get to the drawer but to toggle
it. I gathered that the reason you may not have been able to find it is that
it was not enabled. If enabled, Command Option apostrophe will get you there.

and I got the impression from listening to the podcast that this is
done with the drawer.

I've tried pressing command d several times and each time pressing VO
Shift Home and then VO left but this just gets me to a piece of text

Is there another way of going about following someone? I did command

Re: [Mac-access]: Google Chrome

Yes, I am seeing the same behavior under Yosemite with most sites. This is
especially frustrating because I wanted to use Chrome with Spotify since it
doesn't seem to work with Safari.

Thank you for providing an example website, David. My testing of the page you
linked mirrored what I’ve been seeing on most other websites: The latest
versions of both Chrome Stable and Chrome Canary work fine with VoiceOver under
Mavericks 10.9.5, but those same versions of CHrome have a number of VoiceOver
issues under all versions of Yosemite. This is one of several reasons why I
have not yet upgraded my production Macs to Yosemite.

Systems tested:
2013 Macbook Air 11
2008 Macbook
OS X 10.9.5
OS X 10.10.2
Chrome Stable version 40.0.2214.94
Chrome Canary version 42.0.2292.0

Basically for example if you go to www.bbc.co.uk/news you will now find it is
impossible to read any news content with Voiceover using dom view. You can
only read element like headings etc. by tedious pressing of the tab button
with no ability to read any actual news content.

If you turn Chrome Vox on then the news content does become readable with
that alternative screen reader but the previous accessibility which used to
be possible with Voiceover has been broken.

Re: [Mac-access]: Posting To Facebook From The Mac

2014-11-29 Thread gs
There are two radio buttons in the Notification Center.

Select the Today radio button, then press the edit button to add the social
widgets if they are not present. Interact with the new widgets scroll area and
press the add button for social.
Stop interacting and press Done.

Now, when you access the Notifications Center, select Today, interact with the
widgets area, and interact with the
social widget, you will find the Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, and Messages
buttons for posting.

You can also choose to only show some of these social items.

One of the many great things to be said for the Mac is its ability to handle

information for a new service from the Network options under System
Preferences, so far so good but what if you couldn't be bothered doing that?

If you couldn't be bothered with all the technical data then just download
the Witopia VPN client for the Mac which Is quite usable with Voiceover I'm
 pleased to say.

Which ever way you choose - setting up manual VPN configurations or using the
Automatic Witopia VPN client - you'll find plenty of user guies, Tutorials
and FAQ sheets which will give you all the information you need to make the
full use out of your VPN service plus you get 24 hour tech support both live

sure know teir stuff when it comes to VPN.

See the Witopia web page for Subscription packages and so on.

Re: [Mac-access]: Getting to a Link in an sms message

2014-11-19 Thread gs
Matthew -
I did not indicate that Facebook is trying to sell me something via text
message. I simply said they are spamming me.

When they politely ask you to add a number, they do it under the deceptive
pretense that it's for your own security. The reality is that they want to
inundate you with every status update and photo album post. And they tell you
that it is easy to stop all this. I think one of the first messages they send
is the helpful missive that you can reply with stop and they will cease. This
may not work.

While it may be possible to control the verbosity of SMS messages Facebook
choses to spew just because one adds a phone number, I think the process is
deceptive. I have grown tired of trying to find just the right setting to stop
even the emails and have no confidence I will be able to disable the text
messages. So I think the best solution is to simply remove the mobile number I
added under the assumption that it would add some security to my account.

The reason I warned you about this is that I thought you had not yet found a
way to respond to the confirmation. If you are satisfied with the results of
adding the mobile number, then I'm glad you were able to get it added.

Although these are fairly simple commands to be executed in the terminal, you
should also be able to make the same changes using the GUI.
Just use Command I to get info and possibly expand the disclosure triangle for
Sharing and Permissions if you feel more comfortable trying to do it that way.

Hi Esther

Excellently explained, as always. This is a cross-platform application which
I’m trying to install. I can’t share any specifics at this point owing to an
NDA. But the developers say you need to be logged in as “Root” in order to
install it. Presumably, this relates to the permissions issue which you raise
in your post. Once the app is installed, you can do everything from your own
account so hopefully, it should only be necessary to do this once.

This has actually cause me quite a lot of frustration all day because I need to
get this done, and my woeful lack of Terminal experience is letting me down
badly yet again. I learned a few things when I installed and configured Snow
Leopard Server. But that was about fifty million years ago, and I’ve probably
forgotten most or all of it owing to the fact that I’ve allowed myself to
become very lazy in terms of installing software.

OK, so let’s go back to your post. I can play the app anywhere on the system,
so if I log in as root, it can probably sit in the root directory of the hard
disk if that makes things simpler?

I will go and re-read your post to see if I can get my head around what I need
to do. Once done, then it’s pretty much plain sailing from there on in.

Many thanks, as always. Incidentally, Esther, I refrained from contacting you
regarding your Mac Access mail account because we still have a record of your
settings here. So if it’s alright with you I’ll go ahead and create a new
account using those settings? If not, by all means get back to us off list if
you’d like to discuss this further.

Many thanks again.

Kindest regards

Hello Gordon,

Shell scripts don't execute when invoked unless you have changed file
permissions on your system to allow them to execute. This is a security
precaution, because you don't, in general, want arbitrary scripts to run on
your system without your express permission, and by default the files you
create or copy will not have executable privilege.

If I want to run a shell script from the Terminal command line, I first make it
executable:

chmod +x scriptname

If you only want the script owner to be able to execute the script, type:

chmod u+x scriptname

In this example, substitute the actual name of the script for scriptname.

Then, run the script with the command:

./scriptname

The dot slash typed before the name of the script (with no spaces) refers
to the current directory, which is not usually included in your $PATH (which
are the directories that are searched by default for executable files).

Presumably the script takes care of the one-time installation, and you won't
use it again.

Those two commands typed from Terminal -- the chmod +x before the scriptname
to make sure the file is executable and the ./scriptname to run the shell
script file named scriptname should be all you need.

Technically, you also need to allow read permission to a shell script file in
order to run it, but you already have it in most cases, including the case you
describe. The alternative to running the chmod command to change the
permissions mode of a file, if you have the file and directory on another
attached disk, is to copy the file with the cp -p option. The -p switch
preserves the permissions of the file you are copying, which includes
executable status for shell script files.

HTH Cheers,

Esther

Hi Jeff,

Through some trial and error with JFW in Fusion, I found a couple interesting
things when working on a Mac keyboard with no number pad.

What I found was that when in Windows in Fusion, turn on keyboard help with
Capslock+1 on the number row so you can play.

FN+semicolon, This should activate the JAWS cursor.
FN+slash This will activate the PC cursor.
FN +CapsLock+semicolon This is the route PC to JAWS
FN +CapsLock+slash This will route Jaws to PC

Experiment with FN + the keys on the righthand side of the keyboard . What is
happening is that the FN key + the keys on the righthand side of the keyboard
are acting as a numpad. So, you can also find the combos to right and left
click and page up/pagedown just like on the numpad.

I do find this to be a pain and will take some getting used too, but, it does
work.

Try it out and good luck.

Hope this helps.

Scott

Jeff,
If you’re running Seil, you don’t need sharp keys. Seil can remap the caps
lock key to the insert key. Carabiner also gives you a numeric keypad which
you can access using the fn plus the keys on the right side (7 8 9 u i o j k l
m / ; p 0).

Hello Everyone,

OK, this is a very strange one and I am hoping someone can lend some advice
here.

I have a MacBook Pro running Fusion. I use Seil and Karabiner to remap my caps
lock key to the Insert key. I use SharpKeys to flip my alt and window key
mappings and all of this is working as I expect, with one exception…

I normally use a full sized Apple keyboard while at the office with a numeric
keypad on the right. So, this means that the caps lock key doesn’t play a role
here for the most part and everything works well for me using the JAWS desktop
layout.

I have found that if I use the insert key on the numeric keypad or the caps
lock key while in Laptop mode that none of the keys past the J key work.
Meaning, I can do things like insert-t, caps lock plus s, etc., etc. but
anything on the right-hand side of the keyboard doesn’t work.

Something interesting to note is that the laptop keys don’t work whether using
caps lock or the insert key on the numeric keypad past the letter J.

Has anyone run into this issue at all? If so your advice is hugely appreciated.

I am wondering if the newer versions of Karabiner or Seil have broken something
here?

Hmm. I'll try this next time I want to read a table. But I have to say that
the table navigation is so poor with the column weirdness that I'm glad I don't
have to use a Mac in a work environment. I love it for what it does well but
can't understand why there are not more incremental improvements with new

 4. Now press either up or down by itself and see if you can navigate the

Google Chrome really works nicely on the Mac. Only problems I have with it

The biggest thing I feel that goes for Chrome on the Mac is the search
feature. This is really powerful. Nothing else does this.

IOS safari also isn’t a pleasant experience. It works fine with simple

I have not yet seen if Chrome is any better.
