Re: A question for Apple TV Users: What hardware are you using foraudio-out?

2013-06-14 Thread Geoff Waaler

Hi Brian,

For what it's worth, I clipped the following out of my September 2011 Amazon
order:

*** Begin clip:
Delivery estimate: Sept. 21, 2011 1Digital Coax Optical Toslink to Analog
Audio Converter

$27.14
In Stock
  Sold by: LowerPriceUSA.com
*** end clip

The converter came with a power adapter/chord and toslink cable. I had to
supply my own RCA cable so as to connect it to my ten year old Bose wave
radio.

There are no buttons or controls on the converter, and the jacks are all
idiot proof, hence there's no way to screw it up. Well, except perhaps for
the red/black output jacks for the RCA cable. My solution to that dilemma
is to play a stereo track through headphones and verify that it coincides
with the channels plaied on the device I'm hooking up. As for the Bose, I
can only speak for the ten year old model, but it's controls are all
logically laid out push buttons. The only accessibility issue is that there
is no audio feedback on the clock and alarm settings, hence I have
accidently pushed the wrong button(s), causing the Bose to blast on in the
middle of the night. Recent Bose adds refer to touch top controls, which
suggests that it may now only be possible to manipulate the tuner/ choice of
inputs, etc via the remote.

With this setup, I can use airplay, Airfoil, or library sharing to play
content on my Apple TV and it sounds great on my Bose.

HTH.
Geoff

Subject: A question for Apple TV Users: What hardware are you using
foraudio-out?

Hi Folks -- I've setup a current generation Apple TV and connected it via
HDMI to my television. The speakers built into the television are pretty
bad, so I've started thinking about using the Apple TV's optical digital
audio-out port, AKA toslink or S/PDIF to connect to an external audio
system for better sound. Unfortunately, my ancient home audio system does
not have the requisite toslink port, just RCA jacks. From the research
I've done I know it is possible to purchase a toslink / RCA converter but
before I do that I'd be interested in hearing from Apple TV owners who are
using the toslink audio-out port, with either the digital connection or
the RCA converter. If you are happy with the results you are getting and
don't mind sharing, I'd also be interested in knowing the make and model
of audio equipment you are using with your Apple TV and the level of
accessibility of that equipment.

Experienced opinions only, please. I've done my preliminary research and
am just looking to hear some real-world feedback.

Cheers TIA,
Bryan

Re: A question for Apple TV Users: What hardware are you using foraudio-out?

2013-06-13 Thread Phil Halton
I was considering using a Samsung Audio Bar for alternate audio output, but
the darn TV didn't have any Audio out jacks - only video/audio inputs. I
hadn't considered the AppleTV's output jack, I will be watching this thread
for ideas too.

You might consider some bluetooth speakers.
