Changing the pitch of software instruments in GarageBand

Hi all -

I was playing the electric guitar using the qwerty keyboard, when I somehow 
must have hit a key combination that change the pitch up an octave. Being able 
to do this on the fly is a great option to have, but I don't know how I did it, 
does anybody know what I did or needs to be done in order to change pitch 
up/down when playing a software instrument? -

its the Z and X keys that change pitch up and down an octave.
