2013-04-02 Thread Geoff Waaler
Hi Ann,

Thanks so much for blazing the trail. I think I understand your description,
but hesitate to fold or shape something in a manner that it wasn't intended.

So, I have my Standscand pro folded. I'm not sure that its folded exactly as
it came out of the box but think so.

So we have a little flap which appears to make a magnetic seal. The cable is
at the bottom right. So, first step is To place the small flap in front of me
on a table and flip it up. Next, I open the box downward. There are now three
rows as follows:

  1. The little flap, which is now pointing up.
  2. one section which is only a piece of cardboard thick.

  3.
Four pieces of cardboard folded over. The top one can unfold to the left,
and the other two would fold out to the right.

Now, the bottom left section appears to have six magnets. Three are on the
top row, and three are on the left side. Just below the top magnet on the left
is a tiny half circle cut into the side.

I can see creases, but know that the moment I do any folding, it will
permanently change the beast.

Perhaps you can confirm that we're on the same page so far, and if you could
offer any more pointers?

  Thanks again and best regards.

  Hello dónal,

I have the StandScan Pro which has 15 Leds to provide good lighting. Yes,
it's flimsy, but it folds flat, weighs next to nothing, and works great with my
iPhone 5.

I've tested the StandScan Pro with a double-page from a pretty complexe book
using Prizmo in English with brilliant results. It was virtually perfect apart
from the page headings which are in italics and came out as garbage.

I tried scanning a rectangular box containing a deodorant spray, and
TextGrabber read the information almost perfectly, whereas Prizmo failed at
this task. This time, I was using French.

Yesterday, I demonstrated the StandScan Pro to an IT teacher I was training
in VoiceOver and the Mac. He gave me a flyer to scan and the result was perfect
using TextGrabber. He was so impressed that he called in some colleagues to see
this amazing thing!

So, yes, you have to be careful with the StandScan Pro as it can easily be
damaged, but it isn't a replacement for a flatbed scanner, it's a tool to carry
around in a backpack for those occasions when you really have to get the
information from a printed source quickly.

Below my signature, I'll paste in my description of how to set up a StandScan
Pro. By the Way, it ships with a 9 V battery holder and you can purchase a 12 V
mains adaptor. You really need the 12 V for good results, but you can also add
a battery holder for 8 AA batteries, giving a 12 V output.

The StandScan Pro plus mains adaptor comes to something under $35 which isn't
a lot to spend for such good results.

  Cheers,

  Anne

Lay the folded StandScan on a table with the small flap away from you.
Open the small flap and fold back the body of the StandScan towards you.
Now the topmost piece should open to the left, and the remaining part will
open to the right but will still be a double thickness.
Open the final piece to the right.
Go to the lefthand piece and you'll find that there is a crease running from
where it joins the second piece to the lefthand edge, a few centimetres in.
Fold along this crease making an elongated triangle.
The same thing can be found on the back edge of the same piece, and on the
front and back edges of the third section.
The piece at the extreme right is the top and you can find the LEDs along its
back edge, and the cable at its back left corner.
Lift the righthand section and lift the lefthand section, then fold over the
flap at the end of the section with the LEDs so that the magnets meet the
magnets on the lefthand section.
A flap of the top section folds down to engage with the magnets on the
triangular pieces, and the piece still lying flat at the back lifts up to meet
the top and the triangular side pieces at the back.
Your StandScan should now look like a large box with an open front and a
short cable coming out of the upper back lefthand corner.

Re: Stand Scan

2013-04-02 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Geoff,

So far so good.

The lefthand section has to be folded along the tactile lines to create two
elongated triangles, one along the front edge and the other along the back
edge. Fold these with the shiny side out.

You'll find the same arrangement in the third section along. These sections
with triangular folded bits are the sides of the box and the wide ends of the
triangles support the top.

The section at the far right is the top. It has a round hole in the centre, and
the line of LEDs just in front of a line, a few centimetres from the edge. This
line is where you fold again. You also fold along the line a few centimetres in
from the front edge, and along the line the same distance in from the righthand
edge. These are the sections that fold down from the top to hold the whole
thing rigid.

To put the box together, raise the lefthand side to the vertical, and raise the
back section to meet it. The magnets on the folded triangular section at the
back of the lefthand piece will engage with magnets on the back section. You
have to straighten out the small flap that holds the package together when
folded up.

You now have to lift up the other two sections to form the righthand side and
the top. The righthand side engages with the back in the same way as the
lefthand side, then the top comes over and the three small folded sections
attach to the outside of the back, the lefthand side and the front.

You should now have a box with an open front and a cable emerging from the
upper back lefthand corner.

It takes a bit of time at first, but I can put mine together in under 30
seconds now.

Good luck!

Cheers,

Anne

 Hello Dónal and David,

You might want to wait for Ann Robertson's comments on sample results from
the StandScan Pro. The StandScan basic model doesn't have sufficient light
power for good results from general scanning. It's designed for inexpensive
portable use with the iPhone (which is why the design appears to be flimsy).
Effectiveness of use of OCR programs on iOS devices by blind users is a
controversial topic, but among those who do this successfully (even before
StandScan), there's a general preference for Prizmo, which has more tolerance
to skewed images as well as doing good OCR. I think that ABBYY TextGrabber +
Translator should work well with the StandScan Pro, based on how well it
does on screen capture images. But I don't have direct experience with the
 StandScan Pro.

Here's a link to an old LifeHacker article reviewing iOS OCR apps:
 • The Best Image-to-Text App for iPhone (August 10, 2011)
 http://lifehacker.com/5829568/the-best-image+to+text-app-for-iphone
You can use Safari Reader (Command-Shift-R). Interestingly, they use
graphics for the section headings: Features, Where It Excels, Where It
Falls Short, and The Competition. On my iPhone I saved each of the images
to my camera roll and processed then in TextGrabber, which popped them all
 out.

I don't recommend TextGrabber for visually impaired users without some way of
setting up alignment, but it works great on screen captures, and handles
multiple languages. I think Anne can comment both on the OCR programs and
 results with the StandScan Pro.

Dónal actually posted a link to the StandScan web site in his initial post, but
I'll give the direct link to the StandScan Pro model, which is the one with the
brighter lights that you want:
http://standscan.com/StandScan/index.php/product/standscan-pro.html

There is a podcast demo of this product up at the AppleVis web site. I didn't
find it that helpful to listen to -- Anne's sample summary scans were more
useful to me. However, there is a discount coupon code that is in effect until
March 31, 2013 if you place an order from their web site, and the podcast does
mention this. I think the offer goes like this: if you order from their web
site before March 31, 2013 and type or paste the coupon code of VIPHONE
(without the quotation marks) into the box for the coupon code upon checkout,
they will send you the StandScan Pro model with an included 12-volt mains
connector free, and also give you a 10% discount on any products that you order
from the web site. This only applies to orders placed at their web site with
the coupon code before March 31, 2013. In this case, you do not need to
separately order the 12-volt power adapter, because it will be included as part
of your order, and the appropriate power plug for your geographic location will
be sent as part of you order.

With the standard order, the StandScan Pro is sent with a 9-volt battery holder
that lets you portably power the device. (The actual battery is not sent, due
to mailing restrictions on batteries; you buy this locally.) You can also buy a
12-volt DC power adapter that lets you plug the StandScan Pro into an outlet,
and which gives brighter illumination that helps with the OCR. This is the
unit that normally costs $4.45, but which is included for free as part of your
order with the coupon code placed before March 31, 2013, and that you will
receive in addition to the 10% discount on the price of the StandScan Pro.

Optionally, you can order a 12-volt battery holder for portable use. Instead
of holding a single 9-volt battery, this takes 8 AA batteries in the holder.
The manufacturers did not make this a standard accessory because it is bulkier
to carry for a portable unit than the 9-volt battery case. (This size battery
is the kind that used to fit in the old transistor radios, if anyone remembers
that.) As in the case of the DC power adapter, the 12-volt battery holder is
supposed to deliver brighter light that may help with OCR for visually impaired
users.

If you want to order the 12-volt battery holder for portable use, here's the
direct link to its page (under Accessories):
http://standscan.com/StandScan/index.php/accessories/12v-dc-battery-pack.html

You will receive a 10% discount on this item, too, if ordered with the coupon
code before March 31, 2013.

The products are shipped from Hong Kong. Previous recipients in Europe got
them in 18 days. You can use PayPal for checkout as well a credit card. This
works out to about $27 + shipping (around $35 if only the StandScan Pro is
ordered, I think, and the discount is applied). Shipping cost depend on your
geographical location, but are calculated before you place the order.

This is a summary of everything I know about placing an order. If you have
further questions, there's a contact email at the web site that you can use.
Please don't ask me for more details since I don't have one of these yet! You
can also simply order the unit on the (U.S.) Amazon web page.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

I have.

I will comment further later but to be honest on first impression I am
disappointed. Basically a cardboard folder which is constructed into a box.
Quite flimsy and probably not suitable for any robust long term use.
I need to experiment further to see what the scanning results are like.

Hi all,

Just had a conversation on twitter about a device called Stand Scan. I
provide a link below. Has anyone used this? I'd be interested in an
opinion because it looks very good.

Re: Stand Scan

2013-03-23 Thread Esther
Hello Dónal and David,

You might want to wait for Ann Robertson's comments on sample results from the
StandScan Pro. The StandScan basic model doesn't have sufficient light power
for good results from general scanning. It's designed for inexpensive portable
use with the iPhone (which is why the design appears to be flimsy).
Translator should work well with the StandScan Pro, based on how well it does
on screen capture images.

Interestingly, they use graphics
for the section headings: Features, Where It Excels, Where It Falls
Short, and The Competition. On my iPhone I saved each of the images to my
camera roll and processed then in TextGrabber, which popped them all out.

I don't recommend TextGrabber for visually impaired users without some way of
setting up alignment, but it works great on screen captures, and handles
multiple languages. I think Anne can comment both on the OCR programs and
results with the StandScan Pro.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Stand Scan

2013-03-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello dónal,

I have the StandScan Pro which has 15 Leds to provide good lighting. Yes, it's
flimsy, but it folds flat, weighs next to nothing, and works great with my

Yesterday, I demonstrated the StandScan Pro to an IT teacher I was training in
VoiceOver and the Mac.

The StandScan Pro plus mains adaptor comes to something under $35 which isn't a
lot to spend for such good results.

Cheers,

Anne

Lay the folded StandScan on a table with the small flap away from you.
Open the small flap and fold back the body of the StandScan towards you.
Now the topmost piece should open to the left, and the remaining part will open
to the right but will still be a double thickness.
Your StandScan should now look like a large box with an open front and a short
cable coming out of the upper back lefthand corner.
