Hello everybody

OK, the maintenance work we planned to do is now complete. Whilst there we
decided to give Apple's upgrade mechanism a go on our primary server to see if
we could upgrade it to Lion from Snow Leopard without any interaction or
re-configuration being required. What an unmitigated disaster!

Apple's claims that everything will be upgraded are just plain and simply
wrong! In order for us to upgrade to Lion Server, a terrific amount of work is
going to be required which, to be honest, we don't much see the point in trying
to do at the moment. Gordon has the capabilities of doing it, it isn't for lack
of ability. It's just such an enormous undertaking to bring our server up to
specification by hand, as it means editing files all over the place, it simply
isn't worth while.

We are still working on our quad core machine to get that one up to speed. But
the primary server is now back on SL and I think it will remain there for quite
some time unless we find a workable way of doing the job. Frankly, I am really
disappointed in Apple on this occasion. They have, I feel, let their corporate
users and enterprise customers down very very badly this time. It's almost like
they're trying to deliberately drop their server-side platform because they've
made it as difficult as they possibly could have done to administrate, set up
and use. I really really would love to hear somebody at Apple explain and
justify the things which their company has done to the server version of Lion.
To be truthful it's a total flop and I have every intention of writing to Mr.
Jobs if I can find his contact details, to let him know just what a let-down it
is.

In summary, anybody running a server I strongly suggest you do not upgrade to
Lion Server. It simply isn't ready for prime time use. Yes, the hardware is
good; although why they didn't put the 2.7 GHZ I7 CPU in there that's in the
new client model, I do not quite understand. Logic would seem to suggest to me
that server-side stuff should have the same power as the client, if not more.

I also fail to understand why Apple has made it impossible to boot into
anything other than Lion Server. You can't install SL on the new hardware.
Puzzling I find it and, as I said, although I know he wouldn't even read my
message let alone take notice of me if he did, I'd love to write to Mr. Jobs
personally just to tell him what I think. Yes; I'd be polite, of course. Abuse
gets you nowhere; I've been the victim of enough of that recently on the
Internet myself without giving it out to others. But I just want him to know
what we as customers think of the latest incarnation of Mac OS X Server. It
makes me wonder just what they're saying down at Microsoft HQ. They must be
laughing their heads off at this.
