As I stated before you have 2 levels, mic and line in. If the mic is somethign
from let's say lab tec and not let's say a shur sm58 or 81 tht requires an xlr
cable or somethign from the sound profs that requres plgu in power you should
be fine.

Ther are no mics that don't use power. All of them require either I think it's
3 or 48 volts tha tis plugin or phantom power.

Take care.

Anyway, I have a sony mic that requires a preamp to give it power, that's why I
was asking about the Griffin. This mic has never worked unless plugged threw a

In this case the imic will not work as it does not supply power, but if you can
hook the preamp up to the imic via line in, and hook the mic to fthe preamp you
might get a quieter noise flor.

Take care.

Powering an external mic: was putting cassettes on to my Mac

2014-06-06 Thread Andy Collins
Ah, This is what I was suspecting, and why I was asking if the Griffin had
preamp capabilities to supply power to the mic. But as it doesn't, then I need
a different solution. I asked in an earlier post if an external sound card
could power the mic, but I got no feedback on that, so don't know so far if
it's an option -

Re: Powering an external mic: was putting cassettes on to my Mac

2014-06-06 Thread Eileen Misrahi
Hi,

I tried to post earlier, but I was reading your email in my personal email
account. When reading up on how to connect my turntable to record my LPS into
digital, one article mention either using a preamp or through my receiver. What
I understood was that a computer doesn't have enough power to run the device by
itself. So, I guess that either a preamp or using ones stereo receiver will do
the trick. If I am giving the wrong info, someone please pipe in. The article
was from B and H photo store on their website. HTH.

Eileen - I would imagine your turntable would have a preamp built-in, to power
up the sound before delivering it to your computer; my mic doesn't have this,
that is why I was enquiring about the Griffin, or external sound cards -

Re: putting cassettes on to my Mac

2014-06-04 Thread Travis Siegel
quicktime and a cable with 1/8 plug on both ends works just fine.
Plug one end into your cassette player, the other end into your
microphone on your mac (if your mac doesn't have one like the older
ppc macs, then ebay has 6 dollar usb earphone jack/microphone jack
combos) start quicktime, click record, then hit play on your cassette
player. Wait for the tape to stop, edit tthe file to remove the
blanks at the start and end, and you're all done. Export to format of
your choice if you have uicktime pro, or just save and convert using
switch if you don't.
This is how I converted several audio books I had on cassette, and I
had no trouble at all.

Eric - your podcast helped me greatly with my ability to use Amadeus, so thanks
for that, I was very confused about editing for a while, but because I was able
to follow the way you used markers, I am now comfortable with the app.

As for Judy's need to get the cassettes inputed in to her Mac, would it be
possible to use an external USB sound card that has both a headphone socket,
and mic in? In that case, could the mic in be used as a line in from the
cassette player? -

Re: putting cassettes on to my Mac

2014-06-02 Thread Sarah k Alawami
I use a mixing board to connect the y cable from the board to the tape player,
then I have usb that goes direct in to the mac from the board. I use audio
hijack pro to record the stuff then I edit out the silence in the begining and
end with amadeus and save it as mp3.

Take care.

Having a big clear out I have found many old cassettes with voices from my
parents down to my grandchildren. The quality of some is not too good and I
 would like to transfer
them to the Mac and put them into MP3 format. As people have been talking
about Amadeus, would that do it. How would you connect a cassette player to
the Mac? I need an ap that is pretty simple to use.
