Hello Linda. The macs are wonderful things aren't they? I would strongly 
suggest that you check out www.applevis.com for podcast and tutorials on 
working with any apple product. There are a lot of good things there 
even ways to set up a mac so that it is more accessible. There are also 
many other sources of information out there. Also the mac itself has 
excellent help files and tutorials. You can also learn about apps on the 
site I told you about. Which ones are accessible and those that really 
need work. I myself miss my mac it is in the shop for repair.

Ah. A fellow ham.  Cool!

i've been a mac user for 3 years and there's always stuff to learn. That's what 
i love about it.

1. Go to settings and then key board and the first tab there called i believe 
key board. I don't have it open, but if you go in there there is a setting that 
says to use all f1, f2, etc. Keys as standard function keys. Check that box and 
you should be good to go as far as the key board is concerned.

2. In the second tab of the same system prefs  area go to mission control and 
disable all of the key board short cuts listed in the second table.

That's all i can think up for now. Hope that helps a bit.
