[Mac-access]: Voice Dream Reader file backup

2015-04-01 Thread Ian Harrison
Dear listers,

Is there any way to back up the files I have in Voice dream reader? I think my
phone is dying and I don't want to lose the very long list of publications I
have in the app.

Thanks in advance
Ian

Re: [Mac-access]: Voice Dream Reader file backup

2015-04-01 Thread David Griffith
As I am currently on my Windows Machine I have to give instructions
based on the Windows version of itunes but it should be similar if not
identical to Mac iTunes.

If your phone is dying I thought it best not to wait until I am on my Mac.

Plug your phone into your Mac.
1. Open itunes.
2. Hit the iPhone Button.
3. Go to Apps on your phone.
4. Go to File Sharing.
5. In the list of File Sharing apps find Voicedream
6. In the list of Documents you will find one item called Library.
7. Hit the save button and select a folder location that you want to
save the Voicedream Library to.

I have just done this on my Windows machine and found a folder for each
book. Some of the files are Voicecream Specific but there are also
text and other readable versions of the documents there.

I do not believe that is possible at this time. Maybe when and if they add
ICloud support to it. For now though again i do not believe it is possible.

Talking Newspapers and Voice dream reader

2014-05-27 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi listers
Many UK members will also be struggling with the RNIB take over of the TNAUK
subscription service for magazines and newspapers.

The current system being used by the RNIB crashes my iphone 4s and is
ridiculous to navigate within a publication.

I thought I would import a magazine into voice dream to see if this helps. It
stops it crashing, but I am a newby to voice dream and would like some tips to
help me navigate through.

Voice dream seems to be able to see the chapter or article I am on, but I can't
find any way to browse the chapters or articles so I can go straight to the
bits I am interested in. Does voice dream really break down the file into
individual articles or chapters? Will this allow me to somehow browse the
contents of the magazine?

If it does then it will make my ability to read improve vastly.

Thanks in advance
Ian

Voice dream reader navigation questions

2014-04-10 Thread William Lomas
hi all

in voice dream reader, i note that you can't easily navigate daisy text-only,
is that right?
i wanted an easy solution to read tnauk titles on my iphone and figured i could
just jump between all sections of the paper, and levels.
i assume the html version is better for this, but how then, would one navigate
an audio daisy book easily in voice dream reader?
regards and many thanks for your responses
William.

Re: Voice dream reader navigation questions

2014-04-10 Thread Matthew Carello
Hello william. Next to the play button should be navigation. You can switch
that to whatever you want. where it says play if you listen it will say flick
up to rewind and flick down to fast forward. it will do this by the increments
you set in navigation.

Voice Dream Reader iOS app is on sale for $4.99

2013-12-21 Thread Esther
Hi All,

If there are any list members who have been thinking of using Voice Dream
Reader for their iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, this app is on sale now for half
price ($4.99 instead of $9.99). This app is great for reading a wide range of
document formats and eBook content (only DRM-free eBooks, though -- won't
generally work for iBooks or Kindle eBook contents), and DAISY books, including
in audio format. If you have a Bookshare account, you can log in and download
books directly from the app. You can have the selected voice and reading speed
remembered along with your place on a per book basis. You have the option of
purchasing additional voices for use in the app for $1.99-$2.99 each. These
are the Acapela voices, but there are also some very good NeoSpeech voices. In
iOS 7 you have the option of using the built-in voices.

There's also a free lite version of Voice Dream Reader that you can use to try
out the app (though I prefer to purchase the full version of apps instead of
adding features by in-app purchase -- it's less confusing if download the app
again or use it on another iOS device, because your usage will not be limited
until you remember to do a restore of in-app purchases.). The free version
will only read 300 characters at a time for each press of the Play button,
but is otherwise fully functional.

Here are the app store URLs:
• Voice Dream Reader - Text to Speech (on sale for $4.99, usually$9.99) by
Voice Dream LLC
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/voice-dream-reader-text-to/id496177674?mt=8
• Voice Dream Reader Lite - Text to Speech (free) by Voice Dream LLC
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/voice-dream-reader-lite-text/id563971853?mt=8

I'll point you to a link to a recent review post. Use the Safari reader option
(Command-Shift-R on a Mac):
• Voice Dream Reader, Truly a Dream App
http://mosen.org/index.php/voice-dream-reader-truly-a-dream-app/

For those of you who have BookShare's Read2Go app ($20), this app still has a
better interface for Braille users. But you are restricted to using the U.S.
English voices that come with this app, so you don't have options to use a
voice with a different language or regional accent. You also can't read
Microsoft Office or Pages documents, plain text, HTML, ePub, etc.

Esther

Voice Dream Reader iOS app on sale for $4.99

2013-11-28 Thread Esther
Hi All,

Voice Dream Reader is an app that I consider to be in the must get category
for anyone who does significant amounts of reading on their iOS device. You can
read PDFs, Word documents, plain text, Apple Pages, RTF, DRM-free ePub eBooks,
and HTML. There's direct integration with Bookshare, so you can log in
directly, browse, and download books. You can also pull in books from
Gutenberg, and there is direct integration with Dropbox, which makes uploading
easy, as well as integration with popular reading apps such as Instapaper.

Your place is saved within each book or document, along with your voice
selection and reading rate. Before iOS 7, you could purchase additional
Acapela voices (for $1.99 each) or NeoSpeech voices (for $2.99 each) for other
languages or dialects (including a few not supported by Apple's voices). In
iOS 7, you can use the system voices. This is great for anyone who reads in
multiple languages, especially since Bookshare's app, Read2Go ($19.99), only
supports English. Voice Dream Reader receives frequent updates and additions
of features. With the addition of DAISY 2.02 support in the last release, this
has really become an all-in-one reader app. It won't handle eBooks with DRM
(such as most of the commercial books sold for iBooks, the Nook, or the
Kindle), and Read2Go still has better support for reading with Braille devices,
but I strongly recommend this to any VoiceOver user who doesn't already own
this app.

For low-vision and print-disabled users there are additional features, such as
large font size selection and highlighting of text while reading.

Here's the App Store URL:
Voice Dream Reader - Text to Speech (on sale for $4.99, regularly $9.99) by
Voice Dream LLC
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/voice-dream-reader-text-to/id496177674?mt=8

This sale runs through Sunday. HTH.

Cheers,

Esther

Moving books to folders in Voice Dream Reader [was Re: may have asked this before]

2013-11-24 Thread Esther
Hi Brenda,
To move books in Voice Dream Reader from one folder to another,
1. From the All Items home screen, double tap the Folders button in the top
left corner.
2. On the Folders screen, flick to the folder you wish to move books from and
double tap. (I usually have these outside of folders on the All Items screen
and start from there. If you already have folders you set up, and just want to
move books into them, you can skip all the earlier steps and just start at step
3.)
3. Double tap the Edit button in the top right corner.
3a. Flick through your books and double tap to select entries. There is also a
Select all button in the bottom left corner, and an Unread button 1 flick
to the right of it.
3b. When you are finished selecting items, double tap the Move to button that
is the 3rd of 4 buttons at the bottom of the screen. (The 4th button is
Delete).
4. On the Move to screen, flick to the folder you wish to move your books to,
and double tap. If you need to create a new folder, navigate to the Add
button at the top of the screen, just right of the Move To screen heading,
and double tap.
4a. A new folder with the default name of Folder will be created at the end
of the list under My Folders, and focus will be at the end of the text field
for that name with the on-screen keyboard enabled.
4b. Give the folder a new name, e.g. Other Books, and double tap the Done
button in the bottom right corner to dismiss the keyboard.
4c. Double tap the Done button in the top right corner to leave folder
editing mode.
4d. Double tap the new folder you created to select it as the Move to folder.

You can also reorder or delete folders when you are in editing mode. The
reorder button is to the right of each folder entry. When focus is on this
button, do a double tap and hold anywhere on the screen. Without lifting you
finger from the screen, move the entry up or down to the position you want
before releasing. The delete switch button is to the left of each folder
entry. When you double tap delete, focus will be on a Confirm deletion
button. To avoid deleting the entry, either flick left back to the delete
switch button and double tap it again to toggle it off, or double tap the
Done button in the top right corner of the screen to exit editing mode
altogether.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Moving books to folders in Voice Dream Reader [was Re: may have asked this before]

2013-11-24 Thread Esther
Hi Sarah,

Maybe the quick conceptual way to describe moving books to different folders is
that any actions that involve moving or deleting items in Voice Dream Reader
requires you to be in Edit mode in that folder or screen. When that occurs,
the buttons at the bottom of the screen change from ones that deal with the
reading and display of the current folder's contents to buttons used to select
all, move to another folder, or delete.

Apart from that, you only need to know how to navigate to folders from the
default All Items home screen (using the Folders button in the top left
corner to go to a Folders screen that lists your folders), and how to create
new folders. You can either create new folders with the Add button on the
Folders screen, or, if you started moving books and suddenly realized that you
never created a the new folder to hold them, by using a similar Add button at
the top of the Move To screen.

Adding new folders automatically puts you in edit mode, since many people want
to be able to specify a name. If you just want to take the default value, and
deal with renaming later, when you're on the Move To screen after double
tapping add at the top of the screen, just double tap Done at the bottom
right corner (to exit the on screen keyboard) and then Done at the top right
corner (to exit edit mode). Then do a four-finger tap on the bottom half of
the screen to go to your last folder (which will be named Folder), and double
tap to move the contents there.

The instructions only get long when there was no previously created folder. In
most cases, there are already folders, and you just select the one you want to
move to on the Move To screen.

Also, I probably should have left out the general editing information at the
end of the instructions, but they're included just in case somebody needs to
know how to delete or reorder folders. I suppose that we can assume that
anyone who wants to change folder locations already knows how to navigate to
folders in Voice Dream Reader, but the instructions are stuck in there for
completeness in case someone creates a folder they later want to get rid of.

The only part of the explanation that I remember for myself is the need to go
to Edit mode in the starting location, so that selecting items allows me to
use a Move to button at the bottom of the screen.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Voices: was A Review of the Voice Dream Reader for iOS: A One-Stop Solution - AccessWorld® - August 2013

2013-08-16 Thread Andy Collins
I had a play with the free version of Dream reader, and found their voice from
Neospeech the best of the lot. I went to their website and had a listen to
other available voices, and I have to say they are the best I've heard by some
distance, I'm just not sure that I'll ever be able to use them on my Mac or
iPhone, other than maybe for the Dreamreader app. Great shame as they are the
most human sounding, in my opinion -

Re: A Review of the Voice Dream Reader for iOS: A One-Stop Solution - AccessWorld® - August 2013

2013-08-15 Thread Devin Prater
The app is really good, the best there is, I'd say. There aren't that many
choices between voices, but its fair I suppose. NeoSpeech and Acapella are the
companies you get voices from, I wish they could have added eSpeak or some
others, but what we have is, I suppose, all the developer can work with.

Voice Dream Reader on sale for $4.99 today (May 20, 2013)

2013-05-20 Thread Esther
Hi All,

Voice Dream Reader - Text to Speech went on sale today for $4.99 for a limited
time, down from the regular list price of $9.99. This is an excellent iOS app
for reading a variety of document formats (Office, Pages, etc.), eBooks without
DRM (including Bookshare books), PDFs, etc. with high-quality Acapela voices.
The basic app comes with the Heather voice, and you can purchase additional
voices, including those for other languages, for $1.99 - $2.99 each through
in-app purchase. Your settings for voice reading rate, language, position and
bookmarks in each document or book are remembered. The app is frequently
updated, and the developer is very responsive to new feature requests and
supporting VoiceOver.

There's also a free, lite version if the app that you can try out first.

Here's the App Store URL link to Voice Dream Reader:
• Voice Dream Reader - Text to Speech (on sale for $4.99, usually $9.99)
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/voice-dream-reader-text-to/id496177674?mt=8
This is the URL for the free, lite version for trial purposes:
• Voice Dream Reader Lite - Text to Speech (free) by Voice Dream LLC
https://itunes.apple.com/app/voice-dream-reader-lite-text/id563971853?mt=8

I'll also paste in the links for the AppleVis entries:

2013-05-20 Thread Glenn
Hi Esther,
Interestingly, I just heard a story on this app on NPR (National Public
Radio) this morning.
The guy who created this app did so while taking an early one-year chunk of
his retirement to spend it on an island in the Arctic with his wife and two
children.

Voice dream reader is now working well with the Rachael voice.

I would like to use the Rachael voice to read some books I have downloaded

to read ipub books from the iTunes App store (I suspect not as these are DRM
protected?). Failing that is it possible to get iBooks to use the Rachael
voice and if so how?
Many thanks.

Just load the book you want to read and then swipe until you hit the voice
settings button. This will open a dialogue where you can select the voice
and customise the settings . Then back out to play the book.
