If you or anybody you know matches the qualifications, go ahead and
apply thru the Web site but also drop me a line so I can mention you to
HR. The job will not be a walk in the park. But it's a chance to put
your stamp on a site that we're putting a lot of money into over the
next few years, bnet.com. And thru that stamp you'll also be
influencing features and integration with our other B2B sites like

MacGroup: Linksys router as hub

2006-01-18 Thread Dan Crutcher
I have two computers in a room that has only one Ethernet connection
to my LAN. I want both computers to be connected to the LAN. I also
happen to have have an unused Linksys cable/DSL router, which I'll
call Linksys B.

If I plug in the Linksys B router, run the Ethernet cable to one of
its ports and run Ethernet cables from two other of the Linksys B
ports to the two computers in the room, will they be able to access
the network?

Does it matter which Linksys B ports I use for either the cable from
the network to the router, or for the two cables to the two
computers? The Linksys has 6 ports: one labeled "WAN," one labeled
"UPLINK" and four unlabeled ports.

Does it matter that the LAN that is being connected to is currently
being provided NAT services by an identical Linksys router, which
I'll call Linksys A.

Do I have to access the Linksys' web interface -- on either A or B --
to change any configuration settings? (Such as turning off NAT on
Linksys B?)

Essentially, I want Linksys B to serve as a "dumb" router on the
network to give me more Ethernet access points in that one room.

Thanks.

Dan

MacGroup: Linksys router as hub

2006-01-18 Thread Nelsn Helm
Of tangential relevance:

I have tried to use several NetGear wireless routers off one cable
connection, putting one in each corner of the house and broadcasting
on different channels.

One router manual says this can be done, but does not say how. One
says it cannot.

Cable modem -> router A in-port
router A ethernet out-port -> computer
router A ethernet out-port -> router B out-port (not in-port
as you would expect)
router A ethernet out-port -> router C out-port(not in-port
as you would expect)

This has worked with one computer hard wired and two more using the
wireless signals, but not with three wireless. Had to bump the
anonymous neighbor off by unplugging the router, then being first to
get back on.

MacGroup: Repartition/Resize question

2006-01-18 Thread b3
Is there a free/cheap program that will let me resize the partitions
on my external drive?

I have a 160GB external firewire drive, that i had partitioned into
two volumes, one 60GB (to match the size of the iBook) for full copy
bootable backups, and one 100GB one for extra files and such.

Since getting the PowerBook, which has an 80GB drive, i'd like to
change the partition sizes on the external to reflect this - 80GB for
backups, 80GB for extra storage -

i'd like to be able to do this without erasing the drives, as i have
my main 36GB iTunes library on the storage volume (i only keep a
portion of my music on the portables, and use an applescript to make
iTunes check at startup to see if the external library is present,
saving space and time).

so, any help? i'd rather not spend (much) money if i don't have too,
as this is a one time deal.

Rick,
You know that you can set up the re-route in iTunes in the preferences,
right? It's easier than writing an applescript command. I have all my
music in the external drive and simply re-routed from the iTunes folder in
the desktop to the folder on the external drive...can't help you with the
resizing, but am interested in the response, as I have a similar issue...

Ciao for now!

MacGroup: Linksys router as hub

2006-01-18 Thread Henri Yandell
Obviously you can setup Linksys B as a subnetwork. But in that case
you would find that the two machines on the subnetwork were not
viewable from the rest of your network. Possibly you could change the
netmask on your top network, but now you're into the kind of network
juggling that's worth spending 30 bucks on a hub for :)

The UPLINK one is odd. Not sure why a router would have both a WAN and
an UPLINK unless I'm just being especially brainless this morning.
It's possible that the UPLINK works like a hub and you happen to have
a router that can be used in a hub/switch-like state.

Other random ideas would be to plug a crossover cable into the wall
and into one of the 4 normal sockets. Then the other two into the
normal sockets too. ie) empty WAN and empty UPLINK.

Hopefully someone else has a better network grounding than I do; my
theory gets a little stretched when I have to be inventive about
what's happening inside a particular router/hub.

If none of the various lego combinations work, and if you've not got a
crossover cable to hand, and if there's nothing on the software's web
interface that looks applicable; then I'd just go buy a switch.

MacGroup: Linksys router as hub

2006-01-18 Thread Brian O'Neal
I think what you want to do is this. Go to the setup page of Linksys
B and turn off DHCP. Give it an ip address. If your Linksys A ' ip is
192.168.1.1 make the last number of the digits a 2. So you would give
Linksys b 192.168.1.2. Remember that address so you can get to its
configuration page if needed after you're set up. Now plug one of the
4 or 5 ethernet ports from Linksys A in to one of the Linksys B's 4
or 5 ports. Avoid plugging it in to any other port on Linksys B (like
wan, internet, possibly your uplink port as well.) This takes up a
port on B, but gets done what I think you are wanting to do. This
should turn your B router in to just a pass through. No crossover is
needed.

MacGroup: Repartition/Resize question [bcc][faked-from]

2006-01-18 Thread b3
Cathy,
I use the apple script to maintain Two separate iTunes Libraries,
with different tracks, playlists, podcasts, etc.
this way, i have ~10-15GB of music on my laptop, and the entire 36GB
library on the external that i plug in when i'm at home at my desk.
That way, i can still listen to (some) music while i'm away from
home, without having to manually go in and choose the library that i
want, or without having song show up in my library with the "!",
meaning i can't use them when i'm not connected to the external drive.

once it was set up, it isn't any harder than using i tunes. i saved
the applescript as an application, and assigned it the same icon as
iTunes.
i removed iTunes from my dock and placed the "Launch iTunes" script
into the dock.

now, when i click on it, if i'm connected, i get the full library, if
not, i get the portables library.

well, that's how i do it anyway, so that i don't have to manually
switch things around.
it's pretty cool too, because whichever library that i;m using at the
moment, shows up in the media viewer in the other iLife apps...

thanks.

i may end up having to go that route, but i was trying to avoid it
because i have more stuff on the external than will fit on the frees
pace on my powerbook.
i guess i'll just have to burn everything to a dvd and then reimport
it, but i was hoping to avoid such a thing.

and i'd rather not spend $60 on a program that i would (most likely)
only use once.

MacGroup: Linksys router as hub

2006-01-18 Thread Dan Crutcher
I did this and it worked. The only difference is I did not assign
Linksys B any IP number -- I just left it blank. I had to disconnect
Linksys B from the network before it would let me get to its
configuration menu (because typing 192.168.1.1 into my browser took
me to the config menu of Linksys A if Linksys B was on that same
network). Once I did that and turned off DHCP, it worked just as you
said. The network is connected through Port 1 (not Uplink or WAN) and
the other two computers are in ports 2 and 3.

I made one other change in the config, although I'm not sure if it
made any difference. One of the configuration pages allowed me to
define Linksys B as either a "Gateway" (default setting) or "Router."
I chose "Router," since that sounded more like what I'm trying to
accomplish.

Both computers now appear on the network and all seems to work well.
By the way, just to experiment, I also tried plugging the network
Ethernet cable into the Uplink port on Linksys B and that also seemed
to work.

Thanks.

MacGroup: Repartition/Resize question [bcc][faked-from]

2006-01-18 Thread Green, Cathy
Rick,
Can you send me your applescript? I overlooked the fact that your two
libraries are not identical, sorry. But I'd like to do the same thing,
keeping my whole library on the external drive and only selected playlists
on the laptop & iPod...

Ciao for now!

Also try:

It's a demo version. Full version is $45.

might it possibly have specified requirements as "QT v6.5.3 or greater"?

MacGroup: Repartition/Resize question [bcc][faked-from]

2006-01-18 Thread b3
Cathy,

here is a link to macosxhints that i got the script from:

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050123205848370

i of course adapted it to work with the external volume names on the HD.
it did take me a try or two to get it set up, but it worked.

over all, it takes iiTunes only about 1-2 sec. longer to launch, as
it has to first launch the script, then iTunes, but it is worth the
effort to me.

let me know if you have any problems, this little tip is one thing
that made me very happy.

MacGroup: Repartition/Resize question

2006-01-18 Thread b3
Russ,
thanks for the advice.
i actually decided to just go ahead and do it the long way.
I remembered that i could use my iPod, so i deleted the music on it,
and deleted the music files on the Powerbook.
between the two of them, there is enough free space to transfer
everything from the external, reformat, and transfer back.

now i just need to import the "selected" songs back into my local
(powerbook) library, and sync the iPod.

not as easy as a resize partition program i would imagine, but what
the heck?

MacGroup: QuickTime question [bcc][faked-from]

2006-01-18 Thread R. D. Preston
**WARNING**
  DANGER! DANGER, WILL ROBINSON!:-)

Well, I'm in rather unfamiliar territory with Unix; but since no one
else has responded to the question yet, I'll give it a go, albeit with
  an old work-around method...

The following is from pre- osX user level testing procedures, and I
don't know if this kind of thing will work with Unix/Sys osX, so
please just read for consideration/discussion only.

-- navigate in the Finder on your system disk to [System > Library]
and find the QT & Java folders.
-- copy them to a safe/protected location.
-- proceed with QT v7 install (overwrite old QT in System).
-- restart.
-- later, as the need arises, switch QT versions and restart, moving
those component folders back and forth; restart each time.

Like I said, it worked with pre- osX; certainly, those Unix-savvy
people here will correct this pronto if it's improper.

Regards,
Russ Preston

Dan,

A multiport router is basically a router and a hub. If you avoid the
WAN port and observe proper connections you can use it as a simple
ethernet hub. The "Uplink" port is a regular LAN connection with its
polarity switched to be a "crossover" port. You use it to connect a
hub to another hub without having to use a crossover cable. That is
the one you would typically connect to your LAN. Plug your two
computers into the other ports. If you do use the uplink port the
port next to it will not be able to be used. They are usually the
same port, but wired differently. That's why a 4 port hub may have 5
ethernet jacks.

(The reason the "Uplink" port worked for you is that more recent Macs
have ethernet ports that sense the polarity of the ethernet
connection and auto-configure to work with what it's connected to,
crossover or otherwise.)

You should turn the DHCP off so it won't create confusion on the
network, but other than that you don't have to change any settings on
the router.

If I make it to the meeting on the 24th I'll have a bunch of stuff
for the swap meet, including several plain old vanilla hubs that you
can choose from.
