Nolan,

When you said "ancient OS", it passed over my head; I thought maybe
the first msg.
was premature, since it referenced Mac help, as I had system X in
mind. And so then,
  in case you missed it...

"Root" user is different from "Admin." user.
In Mac Help, search on "root" and find "Enabling the root user", as
well as
a supporting article on the same subject.
Take notice of expressed cautions before you decide to proceed.
Again, use extreme CAUTION if you try it.

I accomplished something similar with no problems, as long as I did
what I needed
(enable and login as 'root', then empty the trash), got out of
'root', then logged back
in as my normal user name, with no detours.

Regards,
Russ Preston

Jerry,
I checked Safari, and sure enough... the Open "safe" files item was
checked. I unchecked it. Thanks for warning us, against I'm not sure
what. I just know you are smarter than I am about these things!

Bernie,
We were finally successful in sending our eFile to IRS. What we did
was call BellSouth, had them disable their firewall block, we filed,
then had BellSouth reinstall their firewall . It worked out OK.

Someday, I will come up with a clever signature line. I am not sure
if I will use it or not, but I will come up with one. In the mean
time this next one will have to do:

U.S. Constitution: Fourth Amendment

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses,
papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures,
shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable

The most disheartening thing about all this press is that perhaps the
most dangerous Windows flaw ever discovered appeared during January:
the Windows Meta File exploit [1]. It got almost no press, even
though it was apparently put into Windows on purpose by Microsoft as
a hack to make up for some design limitations with printer drivers.
People are so used to devastating worms under Windows that they just
view them as another cost of doing business.

I am going to be a bit cautious on this claim because the exploit is
aimed at how OS-X handles the shell scripts that are handed off to
it, not at Safari or Mail per-se.

MacGroup: Problem for Safari Users

2006-02-22 Thread Rex Baldazo
Just thought I'd mention on News.com urls you don't actually need to
include the path. Our publishing platform actually only cares about the
numbers at the end, the path is strictly for Google optimization (pages
rank slightly better on Google results when keywords appear in the path
as well as in the article itself). So the url you gave below:

http://news.com.com/Windows+flaw+spawns+dozens+of+attacks/2100-7349_3-60
16140.html

can actually be shortened to this:

http://news.com.com/2100-7349_3-6016140.html

You could in fact insert whatever (url-encoded) string you want into the
path:

http://news.com.com/I+love+Louisville/2100-7349_3-6016140.html

MacGroup: QT Guitar Lessons

2006-02-22 Thread Marta Edie
I keep wondering whether JF has been granted more hours in the day by
the Lord just to give information to this group.
Maybe I should have him research the problem i am facing with my RAZR
phone and iBook compatibility. I have been driving t-mobile -
Motorola- and apple support crazy , since when bringing my Address book
from Apple mail into the RAZR phone via bluetooth, the alphabetical
order in the device is according to first rather than last names.
Everything is just dandy, the date book ( haven't tried photos) and
updates are fine, also the addresses all appear like by magic, except
that they are alphabetized according to first name;. not all my more
than 200 contacts are buddies of mine whose first names I know. - If
there is only the last name - it appears accordingly. So somewhere in
the transfer something is taking a somersault. Is it on Apple's side,
as Motorola will tell me, or is it on the motorola or even t-mobile as
Apple's did not quite tell me ( a nice gesture not to push the blame),
but we gave up after an hour's fiddling since fatigue set in. - There
will be a bottle of wine for the one to figure this one out.
