It just occurred to me that maybe it's possible to connect a 'solid state' 
FW800 memory drive to the mini and boot from it, without the need for an 
internal (spinning) hard drive? Then the mini would be able to withstand higher 
operating temps... Perhaps?

I don't know anything about higher temps, but you could just swap the  
drives out too.  It is not that hard to do.
