There would be additional things needed above what we already have. For
example, a way for users to securely authenticate with the server, such as
passwords or certificates.

Uhm, in fact, we already do that for the forwards and the mailing lists.

As I said in my previous mail, I would like to offer that at some point,
but it is not going to happen in the near future.

I understand.

Yeah, makes perfect sense.

Sorry for the noise.

I don't think MacPorts wants the burden of running and securing an smtp server.
That's not our mission. You'll have to find an smtp server that allow you to
change the from address.

the reason why I bring this up here is that my ISPs do not allow me to use a
From-address which isn’t hosted by them.*

This is why my outgoing email using my MacPorts handle is currently being sent
for me by MacPorts fellow and friend Brad (pixilla) since years. This is
working fine, but I’d like to have a more general approach as I can’t imagine
that I am the only one faced with this kind of problem for the MacPorts handle
email address.

Greets,

Correct, we do not offer an smtp server.

Use your normal smtp server, from your ISP or wherever. Set a different From
address in your email client. In Apple Mail, for example, I get a drop-down
menu in my compose window, so I can choose which address I want to send from
for each message.
