Re: our "sudo port install gnome" metaport is not working -- GNOME needs help
Yeah -- maybe pointless. Dave is going over other things instead, and I'm sure he'll get to whatever it is in due course of time. "sudo port install gnome" is broken, but no doubt that'll be fixed in time. K

I'll start with the most important bit -- I think the gnome metaport is a flagship port for Macports, and it won't install. I recommended it today to some new MacPorts users attracted by CherryTree but I was surprised to find it broken at present. gnome failed because polari is broken (ticket open). polari can't be updated because it needs a newer gjs. The current gjs builds (I misspoke to say it didn't) but is too old to support a polari update. gjs can't be updated because it needs a newer mozjs (68). Even after I removed polari from the gnome metaport to get around all this, there are other key build failures (tickets open) that prevent the gnome metaport building. I'm wondering if interested parties looking for ways to be helpful might pitch in to give Dave a hand here to get the gnome metaport back in business, and perhaps get most of these gnome ports over the meson hump to the new versions as well. Is this build failure with some modifications you've made to these ports? Because if you mean the current versions of the ports, well, for example, we have binaries of gjs for all macOS versions, so it built successfully last time it was tried. And I tried building it from source just now on High Sierra and it built fine. If it doesn't build for you, please file a bug report.

this I think “sudo port install gnome" is a popular metaport, but it’s presently broken initially polari won’t build, but that’s because gjs won’t build, but that’s because we don’t have mozjs68 … and then who knows... I wonder if interested people might dive in and give Dave a hand — GNOME is an important but huge tangle of ports, and it is lot for one person to manage, especially as so many things need to move to meson now… Ken
