Indeed. I've trying to get it installed for a while now and from reading
posts on the forum from others i'm not the only one experiencing issues.

The maintainer there simply replied saying they would look into it at
some point but would accept patches.

IMO it's worth pursuing as it will provide a nice environment to work
with on OS X.

I will continue to work at getting it to build and install.

Best wishes, Jamie.

That's fine, you can always ask for help here or in the #macports IRC
channel on freenode (make sure to idle around, there's not always
somebody available immediately).

https://opensource.conformal.com/wiki/spectrwm#OSX seems to have some
information on what needs to be done to get this working with OS X, but
then I can already see the instructions are not completely correct,
because the changes in the Makefile described there should probably also
include changing the library's name to libswmhack.$(LVERS).dylib.

Certainly, being able to be compiled on OS X would be a prerequisite for any
software being included in MacPorts.

Ok, i'll give it a go. It will be my first attempt at doing this and I
know i'm going to have issues because I can't get spectrwm sources to
compile on my Lion machine. I've used the conformal.com forum to let
them know, and they've released 2 or 3 versions since I did that but
they don't seem interested in porting the code to the Mac OS X platform.
In the source code there is information about compiling on Leopard 10.5
but that's all there is relating to OS X.

The fastest way to get this done is writing the Portfile yourself. The
guide[1] and the manual page for Portfile should help you with that.
Once you've got a working Portfile, open a ticket in trac and request
inclusion.
