Re: Does MacPorts need ALL of Xcode?
I usually install MacPorts from the tarball. In my experience, in order for macports itself to compile, you'll have to 1) install Xcode 2) install the Command Line Tools 3) open Xcode and let it install it's components otherwise, you'll get the error, that the c-compiler can't create an executable -- Bjarne D Mathiesen Korsør ; Danmark ; Europa --- denne besked er skrevet i et totalt M$-frit miljø MacPro 2010 ; OpenCore + macOS 10.15.7 Catalina 2 x 3,46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon ; 256 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC RDIMM ATI Radeon RX 590 8 GB

I've got the primary 10.15 on a PCIe SSD The OpenCore EFI is also on the PCIe SSD The 500 GB parts of the 4 TB HDs contain copies of both 10.15 & 10.14 (latest supported by Apple). I'm using CarbonCopyCloner to backup the SSD 10.15 to the two 4 TB HDs. Problem with OpenCore & Metal GPUs is if something goes seriously wrong, you have to : - replace the RAM modules with some macOS likes (eg 16 GB to each CPU) - re-insert the original GPU - pull the RAIDZ1 HDs (partially) out - boot from the external FireWire HD Actually, at present I've only got 1 x 4 TB HD in the DVD tray bay: the second one crashed even though it is younger than the active one. If I understands things correctly, then py-acme is a general package, that others might also use in their project Thus, it should be kept as a separate module In eg dovecot2 & dovecot2-sieve, there're notes about keeping these synced, so you might do something similar. If you do fold it into certbot, you'll have to make sure, it is *always* selected, and *can't* be de-selected. certbot-apache , certbot-nginx are plugins to certbot, thus it makes sense to have these as subports, as it doesn't make sense to have these without cerbot > > Bjarne Mathiesen has created several additional subports which will also > be available with the next release. The only limitation is, that you'll have to hard-code the screen-size. It's also possible to port this to a WinTel 10 machine. The reason I'm interested in using a VM for 10.3.6 is, that I'm currently making my toolchain universal on a 32 bit Core Duo in order to be able to rsync this to my 64 bit Core 2 Duo because LibcxxOnOlderSystems currently is sevely broken ... and it's taking 🤬ages🤬. Also, the MacPro has 12 CPU cores / 24 threads, and it's blisteringly fast when compiling clang & llvm et al. Further notes regarding LibcxxOnOlderSystems : (12) : mentions ripping clang-3.4 out ; but isn't it enough to remove it from default_compilers ?!? so that one still has it in case of an emergency ?!? alternatively, can one use eg "port (pkg|dmg) (clang|llvm)-x.y" to store the versions of (clang|llvm) one doesn't use presently ?!? Nope - 16 character long non-obvious strong password still de-activated :-( I only installed 10.13 when 10.13.2 was released and my root accounts 'survived' that update from 10.12 without any problems at all But the 10.13.2 supplementary update de-activates the root account And that update should only have something to do with Spectre and Safari/WebKit > > Read Mac Rumors description: > https://www.macrumors.com/2017/11/29/apple-fixes-root-password-bug-security-update/ > > The original bug description: > https://www.macrumors.com/2017/11/28/macos-high-sierra-bug-admin-access/ > -- Bjarne D Mathiesen Korsør ; Danmark ; Europa -- denne besked er skrevet i et totalt M$-frit miljø macOS 10.13.2 High Sierra (17C205) 2 x 3,46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon ; 48 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB

It's UNIX, of course there is > a 'root' account. macOS out-of-the-box has a de-activated root account; eg you can't log in as root or ssh into the box as root. The root account exists but in a dormant state and is accessed though sudo from admin accounts. One of the things I do on my boxes is activating the root account; and in some cases removing the other admin accounts, so I've only got root and users. Now, if the root account is de-activated you have no way of administering the box - even with sudo at normal user accounts can't use sudo. Also if you have scrips that eg ssh into the box from the outside, this will completely thow off your setup. -- Bjarne D Mathiesen Korsør ; Danmark ; Europa -- denne besked er skrevet i et totalt M$-frit miljø macOS 10.13.2 High Sierra (17C205) 2 x 3,46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon ; 48 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB

/usr/libexec/path_helper problem
I'm having problems with /usr/libexec/path_helper on some of my machines & I've been completely unable to discover what it is that's going wrong :-( Now, as part of my install process of MacPorts I'm doing this : # setup the system paths ('paths') mkdir -p /etc/paths.d cp-np /etc/paths /etc/paths.orig mv-n /etc/paths /etc/paths.d/999macosx touch /etc/paths echo "${prefix}/bin"> /etc/paths.d/000macports echo "${prefix}/sbin" >> /etc/paths.d/000macports echo "/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/usr/bin" > /etc/paths.d/888developer I waited until 10.13.2 was released before upgrading from 10.12 I've got 4 computers with 10.13.2 On two of these I get the correct result from running #=> /usr/libexec/path_helper PATH="/macports/bin:/macports/sbin:/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin"; export PATH; On the other two I get this : #=> /usr/libexec/path_helper PATH="/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/macports/bin:/macports/sbin:/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/usr/bin"; export PATH; No matter what I've tried I get an incorrect ${PATH} value :-( Under 10.12 & before I had no problems at all ! OK - there was once under 10.5 that path_helper was buggy for some time I've tried diff on the binaries, but they seem to be identical. On the affected machines, I solved this by installing an old scripted version of path_helper from 10.5 - that I had lying around - under /usr/local/bin & modifying /private/etc/profile to point to this instead Anybody else seeing this kind of problem ??? -- Bjarne D Mathiesen Korsør ; Danmark ; Europa -- denne besked er skrevet i et totalt M$-frit miljø macOS 10.13.2 High Sierra (17C205) 2 x 3,46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon ; 48 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
10.13.2 supplemental update & root account
!!! WARNING !!! The 10.13.2 supplemental update in-activates the root account if enabled Luckily, on the machines I've updated, I also had a normal admin account, so no big deal ; but I also have a machine with no normal admin account, so if it does that on that one also, it'll be a hell of a problem getting an admin account again (I do know how to do it) -- Bjarne D Mathiesen Korsør ; Danmark ; Europa -- denne besked er skrevet i et totalt M$-frit miljø macOS 10.13.2 High Sierra (17C205) 2 x 3,46 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon ; 48 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB
