Re: safari busy, busy, busy

It's baffling that some have this problem and some don't. I have a MacMini
with a monitor running SL with only 2 gigs of RAM and seldom experience this
problem. Have you guys gotten the new Safari update that came out about a week
ago? If not, maybe it will help.

 Hi:
I suppose this has already come up on list, but I'm wondering if others
are frustrated by VO continuously getting stuck on and repeating "busy,"
Is there a way to stop that from happening? And Would this be considered
a bug to report to Apple. Sorry if this is old to some of you, but it's
new to me as I use the Mac more.

Re: Link issue in MacVisionaries?

2010-03-22 Thread Esther

Hi Mani,

If you are using the Google Groups web site for the MacVisionaries
list and having difficulty with the link, may I suggest that you use
the secondary Mail Archive site instead? The URL is:

http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/

By default, the site will appear in threaded view. To switch over to
time-ordered items (most recent posts first), press:
Control-I. (For Safari on the Mac with VoiceOver enabled). The
access key combinations, their mnemonics, and their actions for Safari
are:

Control-I (items) Display items in time (posting) order, most
recent first
Control-C (content) Display posts organized by content (threaded),
most recent first

Control-N (next) Show the next post in a thread
Control-P (previous) Show the previous post in a thread
Control-F (forward)Show the next post chronologically in time
Control-B (back) Show the previous post chronologically in time

Currently, Joel's post is near the top of the time-ordered list. Just
navigate to the link and VO-Space. If you want to read up or down a
threaded post, just use Control-P or Control-N. You can also run
searches by typing your search terms in to the text box. I generally
only use the Google Groups web page for lists, like the viphone list,
which have not been set up to be archived at the Mail Archive. Joel's
post works perfectly well from the Mail Archive page.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

pdf files // preview etc

Hi all,

I am trying to get pdf files to be edittable. I can manage reading them more
or less with preview.

I am filling out a form though, I'm not sure if it is using the pdf form
elements or if the little dashes are just meant to be deleted and my
information inserted.

regardless, I can't seem to edit the pdf using preview.

Is there a utility which will help me do this, especially if it will let me go
through the fields as though it were a webform or some such. I gather that is
the intended effect

thanks,

Joel

Re: Skype and input volume

2010-03-22 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi,

I understand that part, I just don't understand why they removed it from the
.xml file since the update. And I'm not to keen on writing the Skype team since
my queries are promptly dismissed. Which is why I'm asking for help here.
Furthermore, that might not even have been in said file depending on your
situation.

 Hi guys,

Well, sadly this issue has come up again. :(

In Skype, there is no checkbox like in Windows to stop Skype from changing
your volume. Now, you can do this in the following file, however.
 ~/library/application support/skype/shared.xml under the "VoiceEng"
section. There used to be an item called "AGC" (Automatic Gain Control)
which, if set to 0, would result in no changes made to adjust the volume
accordingly to loud noises. Now, this doesn't seem to be the case. In
Skype 2.8.0.851 this section seems to have been removed, seemingly, as
this .xml file governs some Skype settings, which probably makes it
impossible to change now. You could also adjust the volume to above 100
percent, in case some microphones were not particularly audible even at
that level. This often helped if some microphone drivers (such as the
drivers for the latest Skype FreeTalk Headset with their new design) had
volume issues which it severely does. Now, this used to be easy to change
as well. But now, some new values seem to have been added in.

Can anyone tell me what they mean?

 Regards,
 Nic

Re: cleaning a Mac DVD drive

2010-03-22 Thread Chris Blouch
I'd put this into the category of "if it isn't broken don't fix it"
Compressed air can contaminate all kinds of mechanicals inside the tiny
device and cleaners may or may not make things better. I've had laptops
for a long time and never needed cleaning the drive.

Hi,

something. Is it safe to use the spray-can of cleaning solution such as one might
use on a Windows Machine; I mean the kind with the long narrow tube that you insert
in to the mechanism and squeeze the trigger? It seems to me, unless I"m
misunderstanding something, that, because the slot loading section of the drive is
always open, the drive lens is more subject to dirt and dust getting on the laser.
Any advice? Thanks.

Did you get this figured out? Do both boxes have internet access to each

built-in FTP, file and web servers so, as previously suggested, if you

creating the rule using those critian as a templet.

Well, it has to be a value recognized by the program in the first place. Which

My wife has my iMac, which is the 20-inch model and it is about a year and

will have any problems. Apple did have some issues with the 27-inch models, but
they apparently got a handle on that and those issues had to do with the

the best buys store which also carries macs was on the other end. So I walked
into the apple store and started using the iMac they had sitting there, the 21

For $1199 I thought that I could afford it if I sold my toshiba qosmio which I
probably might do. Does anyone here have any experience with the newest iMacs
on the market good or bad? I'm starting school in september hopefully and want
to know if anyone has the same senario as I do right now, school and all. If
so, how does it work for documents formatting etc. I've only used pages a
little and haven't messed extensively with any of the other apps in iWork, and
I'm guessing that the performance is 10 x better on the new iMacs than on any
of the new macbooks. So let me know your feedback I'd be greatly appreciative!

I'll take a look and maybe you could add the agc in. I've done that before but
can't remember the correct syntax.

Take care.

Skype and input volume

2010-03-22 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Hi guys,

Well, sadly this issue has come up again. :(

In Skype, there is no checkbox like in Windows to stop Skype from changing your
volume. Now, you can do this in the following file, however.
~/library/application support/skype/shared.xml under the "VoiceEng" section.
There used to be an item called "AGC" (Automatic Gain Control) which, if set to
0, would result in no changes made to adjust the volume accordingly to loud
noises. Now, this doesn't seem to be the case. In Skype 2.8.0.851 this section
seems to have been removed, seemingly, as this .xml file governs some Skype
settings, which probably makes it impossible to change now. You could also
adjust the volume to above 100 percent, in case some microphones were not
particularly audible even at that level. This often helped if some microphone
drivers (such as the drivers for the latest Skype FreeTalk Headset with their
new design) had volume issues which it severely does. Now, this used to be easy
to change as well. But now, some new values seem to have been added in.

Can anyone tell me what they mean?

Regards,
Nic

creating website with v o

2010-03-22 Thread Tony Bernedal
Hi Folks.
I'm thinking of creating a new website for a little project. I tried iweb but
it wasn't very accessible to start with. I can't for example not see wich
design to select at the first stage when crating a new site. Have anyone out
there any tips for using iweb, or recommendation for software to create
webpages without hacking html code?
Regards Tony

Safari and bookmarks

2010-03-22 Thread Nicolai Svendsen
Morning, guys,

When I add a bookmark with COmmand-D, I usually add it to the "Popular" popup
menu. This is only because I usually prefer to keep things neat and organized,
though I haven't taken the time to figure that out yet. :)

Well, a question for you all. Does anyone know if it is actually possible for
Safari to complain if you already have a duplicate bookmark in the same
location? Otherwise, if you forget you already bookmarked something, you end up
with a few of at least the same bookmarks. At least, that is the case for me. I
see a few bookmarks that are exactly the same with same title and URL. That
just sounds like wasted space. And I seriously doubt anyone can remember every
single bookmark. Especially if you have hundreds of them organized into
different folders.

Nic

Re: question 2 for mail with Voiceover

2010-03-22 Thread Lyn & Twinny
Daniel,

Yes you can create rules using voice over. I am fairly new to the mac
myself but the way I did it is by opening the preference menu in mail,
interacting with the tool bar and choosing the rule option. you can
navigate with VO right to the criteria options, interact with th this
option, choose your criteria. once you've done that, stop interacting
and VO right till you find the action option and proceed the same way
and then click OK. hope this makes sense to you.
