Hi Kawal:
Call me dense. But, I still think there's too much rocket science involved in
making Navigon work. I've gotten discouraged with the number of hoops to jump
through, just to get directions somewhere. Or, perhaps I'm just too much of a
homebody to make it worth my while to work with. I have a secret notion that
only wizards and geniuses can really get anywhere using it.:)

Hello Kawal,
Remember to double tap every time Navigon puts you into a new edit field. That

Re: .aif file question?

2011-02-12 Thread Chris Norman
You could use Macs. I may have got the spelling of the name wrong, but it's a
brilliant little program for converting file types.

I know for sure that Winamp, and VLC will play AIFF's, but not sure about
Windows media player... I know it couldn't even play MP3's until a few years
back, so wave is probably your best bet, as everyone knows about the .wav
format.

Re: GPS Apps

2011-02-12 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Hi Geoff.

I don't know if you are using Navigon a lot, but I do have problems with it in
that if I try and search for an address by putting in all the relevant
information, it won't accept the details as sometimes Voice Over won't go into
the edit boxes. Have you or anyone else had that problem? I'm still using
GEO. I just wish Navigon spoke where you were automatically as you have to do
a lot of flicking whereas GEO just tells you where you are which I find very
important if I'm travelling independently on the busses. If I could get
Navigon to accept my information then I'd be OK with it.

nothing when he tried to see if anything was there, the next time, it said 9

password feild, but what could be the problem? I don't remember having this

And, for what it's worth, I'm pushing him to get on here himself to ask these

Re: GPS Apps

2011-02-12 Thread Geoff Waaler
Hi Ricardo and Eric,

For what it does (and the price) around me is excellent!! The main difference
between aroundMe and WhereTo is the number of categories. AroundMe has a total
of 18 with a few redundancies such as "bars" and "pubs". If I select the "food
and drink" category in "whereTo?" here is the list of subcategories under the
letter a:
Afgan
African

all you can eat
American
Argentinean

Armenian
Asian
Australian
and Austrian

I'll spare the reader (and my fingers) a trip through the rest of the alphabet
or rundown of other business categories, but I can't think of one that isn't
covered.

As I understand it, the initial release of lookAround listed the five nearest
points of interest without regard to user category preference, but perhaps a
subsequent release rendered their business search feature more useful?

Best regards.
Geoff

Re: Emoticons with VO pronunciation

2011-02-12 Thread Esther
Hi Carolyn, Wes, Brett, and Others,

I suspect the reason that you can't set up the VO pronunciation editor to speak
emoticons for ":D" (colon d form big smile) and "<3" (less 3) is that you could
get potential confusion in situations where you are normally typing with colons
or in mathematical expressions. Can you imagine a passage where someone is
using capital letters as a shortcut or code to refer to the names individuals
(as sometimes occurs in books, or where one is reading paragraphs of a diary
referring to people by their initials), and because there is no space between
the colon and the "d" someone all of a sudden hears "laughing face" or "big
smile"? That would really be confusing! Or, for example, someone who is
trying to read a math equation comes to the part where an algebraic expression
is less than 3, and hears "love" or "heart" in the middle?

I'd imagine that the annoyance value of having VoiceOver substitute emoticons
under these circumstances would be considerable. Just think of having to
explain to your math teacher that you couldn't do your math homework because
you've set up your screen reader to pronounce "<3" correctly for emoticons on
Facebook.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Carolyn,

There is a random bug that seems to affect pairing certain Braille displays
with the Mac and iOS devices. Some folks have had no issues, while others have
had limited success. Apple and APH are aware of the problem and Apple is

Hi Caitlin:
I've run across this before, and I'm guessing it's a VO bug. It seems to

.aif file question?

2011-02-12 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi all,
I am about to add some material to my production site and have a file in
the .aif format.
I feel sure all apple media players can swing this, it is an apple format
after all. but what about the windows players?
I suppose I could convert it to .wav, not sure how, and frankly would
rather not since I prefer to keep it as edited.

Thoughts?
Karen

Hello,

In Leopard, the password fields are always silent. The clicks only came in with
Snow Leopard.

Password fields never said anything in Leopard. Just type in the information

password fields being silent in mail

2011-02-12 Thread Caitlyn and Nicky

Hi,

Ok, another weird question, probably.

Mark is attempting to set up the power book and is having problems with
getting mail to work. He's having trouble getting his password entered
into the password feild. When he tries to interact with it, it's
totally silent, and it seems like he's not able to type anything into
the feild. Once, vo said nothing when he tried to see if anything was
there, the next time, it said 9 characters. Now, we know it won't read
the actual characters, since it's a password feild, but what could be
the problem? I don't remember having this problem before and don't know
how to help. This is a mac power book running leopard.

And, for what it's worth, I'm pushing him to get on here himself to ask
these questions since he's using the laptop right now and not me-lol!

Thanks heaps, people!

There is a place in the library where you can put it so the script shows
up in your contextual (VO-Shift-M) menus.

Something like "Library/Apple Scripts/Textedit Scripts" In order for
those scripts to show up in your menu though there is a preference that
needs to be checked in the AppleScript editor.

No, I was able to read each character, and I entered it right. There is no

bugs the heck outta me when I'm trying to read a Facebook post, and someone's

Re: Apple Mac Pro

2011-02-12 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
My Mac Book has one jack that uses the same connectors as the iPhone / ipod
shuffle. I don't know the actual pin outs but things should be aalright. Most
folks who want better quality use usB or more conviiently bluetooth for their
sound connections. Also most (maybe all ) Macintosh computers expect analog
audio input to be pre amplified before reaching the computer.

Re: Creating Apple Scripts, wasWord Count

2011-02-12 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
I mis-read your question yesterday. In applescript if you specify an object
(document, file, folder, window ) with a number then it uses the "index" of
the object which for windows and documents Document 1 is the current document
and Document (count of documents) would be the document on the bottom of the
pile. This goes for applications too.

So you could also say tell the frontmost application or tell application 1 and
the currently active application will receive the commands.

Let me know if this is not clear,

Jonathan

Creating an AppleScript can be frustrating even to programmers. But it
certainly is possible, I have a AppleScript that is about 200 lines of
code right now. Some sections were quite annoyng for example, I decided
to have a "handler" that creates a folder if it does not exist. When I
use this to create desktop folders I get an error the first time something
is attempted to be put into the folder. The error said can't turn a
folder into a number or some other weirdness.

IN terms of using AppleScript, the AppleScript editor in the Utilities
directory comes with a help menu that points you to the Apple web site
with a manual. For simple utilities or system admin it can be quite
 useful.

Hope I am not being too vague. Also there were a couple posts on this
list 2-3 months ago discussing ways to make the experience better. I
believe that Uma uses the developer extras that can be installed from the
Snow Leopard disk to write his AppleScripts.

Re: VMWare Fusion and USB Ports

2011-02-12 Thread Earle M. Harrison
Thanks for this. The device that I am trying to connect is seen as a keyboard
so when you plug it in you get the dialog asking you to configure the keyboard
or skip it. In either case, Mac claims the device and it doesn't show-up in
the list of USB devices in VMWare. Kind of an odd ball problem to have. If I
could have Windows claim the USB ports, this problem would go away. When I
would like to connect a USB on the Mac side, I would just shut down the virtual
machine.

Best,

Earle

Is anybody aware of a way to have Windows grab the USB ports automatically
when running within a VMWare virtual machine? In previous versions, you
used to be able to connect and disconnect the USB, but in the latest
version of VMWare fusion, it asks if you want to connect to the Mac side
or the Windows side when you plug in the USB device. It also asks you if
you would like VMWare to remember the option you choose, but on my
computer, it doesn't seem to remember. I really would like to give the
USB ports to the Windows side when I launch the virtual machine but can
find an option to do this in either settings or preferences of VMWare
Fusion. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Garmin (reviews look pretty bad) was Re: getting started with navigon

2011-02-12 Thread Mike Arrigo
I have the app. The first version had muffled audio, but they fixed that.
Actually, when it comes to entering addresses and destinations, it's much
easier than navigon or TomTom, because you don't have to enter the street and
number on different screens. Actually, when you first open the app, you can
just type in the address or place you want in the search box and it will
usually work. One thing that some people don't like is that the program does
not store its maps locally, it's erver based. In the description, it makes this
very clear, so I don't know why people give it bad reviews for that. If that's
not the kind of app you want, don't buy it, plain and simple. The main issue I
have with the garmin app is that it does not provide spoken directions in walk
mode, for blind users, that's important. Interestingly, I got an android phone
a few weeks ago and have been playing with that, it has built in turn by turn
directions for driving and walking, the directions are very good and it's
totally free.
