  Cheree Heppe here:

This afternoon, I took the light rail to the Apple store to get a hands on
look at the IPad 2.

The line for the IPad 2 was even longer than the last time, when the first
IPad was released.

One of the mall security guards tried to warn me away with tales of the long
line and of people having to take tickets to get in to buy an IPad 2.
Undaunted, I asked the security guard to speak with one of the Apple reps. The
Apple rep knew me and I got right in. Thank you, oh, thank you!

The store had a bunch of IPad 2's arranged around a square table near the
front of the store. The Apple store was jam-packed, as usual, but even more
so. My little German shepherd dog guide settled herself under the table in
front of where I stood and rested quietly while various curious IPad
enthusiasts came and went and I examined the IPad 2.

This IPad 2 looks and feels smaller, but it is actually the same outer
dimensions as its predecessor. Somebody had an IPad 1 with them and we held
the two against each other to prove that the IPad 2 was the same outer
dimensions. Where the IPad 2 is smaller is in its weight and thickness, which
is immediately noticeable, if one has handled the IPad 1. The IPad 2's
rounded edges make it seem even thinner without feeling fragile in any way.

There was a fellow customer examining the IPad 2 next to me on my right and I
asked him to turn on Voice Over. He was doubtful about being able to do this
at first, but I talked him through Settings to General, to Accessibility and
through engaging VoiceOver and Triple Click Home.

Once those preliminaries were done, my newly met sighted assistant felt more
confident about playing with the IPad 2 in front of him. I told him that all
IPads have VoiceOver on them and that he could use VoiceOver to read books to
him. He sounded interested and amazed.

In order to hear VoiceOver in the hubbub of the store, I paired my Bluetooth
ear bud with the IPad 2 in front of me. Several previous customers had paired
various phones with this IPad 2 and when I left, I didn't unpair those, just my
own gadget.

Using VoiceOver, I looked around and found a lot more features on this IPad
2. Maybe they loaded a few extra non-native apps on it, but I found three
pages of apps.

After navigating to YouTube and watching the first part of the original Star
Trek's Doomsday Machine, I re-entered Settings; General; Bluetooth and
un-paired my ear bud, clicked back to the Home screen and tapped Triple Click
Home to return that particular IPad 2 to Sighted Standard Mode.

This IPad feels a lot faster than the IPhone 4. In fact, it feels like a
computer in its responsivity and I really can envision this device morphing
into a full fledged computer in very short order. The sighted guy next to me
thought the same thing.

I left and took a break at the Starbuck's in the mall before heading home.

  Wow, what a gadget!!

Even more amazing to me is my ability to get right on the IPad 2 and navigate
and perform functions correctly and independently the first time. My only
regret is that blind users still must recruit sighted assistance to initially
turn VoiceOver on in the absence of an ITunes interface. If there were a
start-up way to have VoiceOver on by default, I would have never had to recruit
my fellow IPad adventurer to turn Accessibility on for me.

Re: moving iTunes library

Hi Tim,
This was a very helpful explanation. It worked like a charm, and my computer is
actually kind enough not to lag anymore. Amazing how draining 36GB of data off
the primary HD will help things move along.

Re: Question about backup software

2011-03-11 Thread Tyler wood
Not sure if CCC has that feature, but it saves a lot of time.

Smart update figures out what files on the external have been modified, so it
says hey, we don't need to add them. So theoretically backups can take minutes
instead of hours.

XCode4, Interface Builder and accessibility

2011-03-11 Thread Victor Tsaran
Hello coders,
While there are many more things accessible about the new version of the XCode4
IDE, the one thing that I am still not able to accomplish is connecting objects
to outlets and actions via the Interface Builder. Of course, there are tricks
to accomplish a lot of this from inside the code, but it would be great if we
could do this via IB, especially when working with other developers.

Anyone got secrets or findings to share?

Thanks,
Vic

Re: moving iTunes library

2011-03-11 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi Chris,

The easiest way to do this is to simply copy the entire iTunes folder from your
Home Directory to the external drive.

1. Go to the Finder.
2. Press cmd-shift-h to open your Home Directory.
3. Navigate to the Music folder.
4. Locate the iTunes folder and press cmd-c to Copy it.
5. Navigate to your external drive and Paste it onto the drive, preferably at
the root level but it's not necessary.

This could take a while depending on the size of your iTunes folder.

6. After it's done, confirm the sizes of each folder for a rough estimate of
whether it did the job or not.
7. You can now start iTunes while holding down the Option key.

This will bring up the Choose iTunes Library dialog for you. If it does not,
you'l need to quit iTunes and try again.

8. Once the dialog is up, press cmd-shift-c to bring up what's attached to
your computer.
9. Locate your external drive, and expand it with VO-back slash.
10. Select the iTunes folder that you just copied over.
11. Press the Open or Choose button, I'm not sure which it is at that point.

That should do it for you. You can check to make sure all is well in
computerland. All your playlists and everything to do with iTunes should be
exactly the same as it was before this action. If everything is OK, then
navigate back to the iTunes folder in your Home Directory, and throw it in the
Trash. Don't forget to empty your Trash after this otherwise it's not actually
going to save you any space.

One other thing to note with this set up, this iTunes Library can only be
accessed while the external drive is connected to your machine. If you are
using a laptop and you leave the external at home, the items in the iTunes
Library will not be accessible to you at all. You could, in this case, keep
two iTunes Libraries, one with everything and one with a streamlined amount of
things. They will remain independent of each other, that is, if you delete
something in one, it will not delete in the other and similarly if you add to
one, you'll need to add it to the other if you wish it in both.

Hope this is clear enough.

Official list position on announcements such as with these quakes / tsunamis

2011-03-11 Thread Cara Quinn
Hello All;

Please, just let me start by wishing all of those listers in any effected areas
of either these continuing quakes / tsunamis, safety, security and protection.
This is an ongoing situation and as such, if there are any further emergency
warnings / watches etc, they will most certainly be allowed here on both
VIPhone and MacVisionaries.

there was an instance about a year ago where a list member suddenly found
themselves essentially homeless over night. these kinds of announcements or
pleas for help are not something that we'll ever reject here on these lists.

Please though, I implore you, do not abuse this. Warnings such as the one we
saw earlier today are obviously of the utmost import so please (as with the
earlier warning) only post such here to these lists when you know for a fact
what is happening and can share real info to help each other out, okay? -As
with any other postings here, we need to be truthful, honest and intelligent.

So for the record, if there is an emergency, or an individual or group is in
some kind of danger or needs real and immediate assistance that members on
either MacVisionaries or VIPhone may be able to provide, then (and only then)
are these sorts of posts not only completely and totally appropriate for these
forums but welcomed.

So I do want to sincerely thank Cheree for posting this warning here. There is
the real possibility this may have saved someone's life or given advanced
notice to someone whom might have benefited from it. So thank you, and once
again, I know I speak for all of the list staff when I extend my deepest, best
wishes of wellbeing to all of those both on and off of these lists today who
may be being touched in some way by this unfolding event.

Please be well, All, and treat each other with respect and love.

Have a great day / evening wherever you may be.

Sincerely,

Cara :)

Re: Boom

I haven't tried this yet, as my mac is being shipped as we tyype, but
you can attach more speakers, which would up the volume and sound

Just thoughts..

Hi,

There is a $5 app for the Mac called Boom. It greatly increases the volume of

accessible with VoiceOver. If anybody is working successfully with Boom and

Hi Geoff!
I suppose you could argue that if someone is unfortunately in one of the areas
that might get flooded [ or not] they now have the chance to remove there Mac's
to safety! :]
Then if there home does get flooded they might lose there home!
But at least they will still have the Mac!
And continue on this list!
But I really hope no one get's hurt!

Creating O'Reily books entirely in plain text.

Also of some slight interest the book he is talking about is a tutorial for
programming the IOS systems.

Re: adium not working with facebook chat?

2011-03-11 Thread Thomas Byskov Dalgaard
Hello Kari!

Are you using the Facebook plugin for Adium?
If you are, then try to do the following:
1. Create a username on your Facebook profile.
2. Go to Adium, preferences, accounts and add account.
3. Select Jabber in the menu.
4. Type in the username you just created on Facebook and type:
@chat.facebook.com that would look like this:
usern...@chat.facebook.com
Enter your password as you are using to login on Facebook.
5. Go to the register acount button and type the following in the edit box
labled server:
chat.facebook.com
IMPORTANT: Hit enter. Don't move anywhere in the dialog box since it will
select a wrong server!
Delete your old facebook-account from Adium and you should be up and running.

HTH.

Re: Question about backup software

2011-03-11 Thread Thomas Byskov Dalgaard
Hello Tyler!

Intersting, I haven't tried Superduper yet, but I'm going to.
Why did you choose Superduper instead of CCC? Of course I understand that
about your drive but was that your only reason?
As far as I understood CCC and superduper does the exact same things while we
are dealing with backups right? Or does one of the two something which the
second one doesn't? You mentioned e.g. the smart update feature in Superduper.
So I am just curious, smiles.
Best regards
