Machine slowing down

2012-02-02 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

I regularly see messages from people complaining that their Macs are slowing
down since upgrading to Lion. One explanation could be that, by default, all
windows are reopened when an application is launched. Someone I know had over
40 windows open in Pages and wondered why it took so long to launch.

You can change this behaviour in System Preferences, in the General pane. Look
for "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" and uncheck the check
box.

To find out how many windows are open in an application, press VO-F2-F2 for the
Window Chooser.

Cheers,

Anne

RE: Mail issues.

2012-02-02 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Jessica,

I empathize with your frustration in setting up your gMail account.

In my opinion, there is absolutely no reason why you cannot enjoy using your
Mac with gMail services.

I'll tell you right from the start that troubleshooting mail account setup
issues can be daunting so you may not get as many replies as you hope
because there are so many ways one can get messed up in the process but I
will list just a few things to keep in mind that may help you resolve your
problem, OK?

1.

Using the gMail web interface, make sure you have iMap enabled.

2.

Using the gMail web interface, I strongly recommend that you read the Google
help section for how to setup iMap on a computer. Google has a very
comprehensive, albeit lengthy, tutorial that I found extremely useful, many
moons ago when I was learning how to do such things.

Now on your Mac:

3.

In the Mac Mail Preferences area of which I am certain you are now well
acquainted (Smile), it is very often necessary to enter the password for
both the incoming and outgoing/SMTP settings, separately, even though, in
most cases, the password will be the same for both.

4.

In the security section of the process, be sure to select SSL for both the
incoming and outgoing protocols.

Jessica, in some rare instances that I have encountered, the type of
security needed is defined by the Internet Service Provider. For example,
Dish Network. In such an instance, it is necessary to use a different type
of security than the normal SSL. This is probably not the case for you but
I mention it in order to relay that sometimes, even when you do everything
right, things can still go wrong.

Good Luck,

Mark

I've just tried for the um-teenth time, to set up my gmail acount on my
macbook pro, and it's now wanted to tell me, "no mailbox selected," whenever
I open it.

I'm only going to guess it's connected, sense the option to take acounts
on line is dimmed, so I don't understand why it would be telling me this,
however it refuses to download my mail no matter how many times I've removed
and re-set up the sount, and this is really getting on my last nerve.

I really don't want to switch providers, because everyone I know knows
this address, and has for years, and sense I've had several providers that
I've been dissatisfied with and have no reason to change aside from the mac
doesn't completely seem to get along with it, than I don't see any other
reason to leave them.

If there's some sort of a work-around, or if there could've been something
I may have missed, could someone please share that?

To 10.7.3 Mail Clients Users, Please Confirm Bug

2012-02-02 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Fellow Mail 10.7.3 users:

Since updating to 10.7.3, VoiceOver no longer announces a message thread
reply status. I would greatly appreciate it if someone will verify this and
let me know. Steps to create bug:

1.
Make sure Mail is not set to Classic View.

2.
Make sure you are viewing messages in thread/conversation view.

3.
>From the View Menu, select View by Conversation.

4.
>From the View menu, select Collapse All Conversations. Note, when landing
on a collapsed thread/conversation in the Message Table, use Control+Tab to
navigate to the message contents area.

5.
Using the VO+V command, set the speech verbosity to high.

6.
In the message table, simply reply to a message and send it. After doing
so, do not delete or remove the original message from the message table.

7.
While interacting with the message table, move the VoiceOver Cursor up or
down the list of threads via the arrow keys. In the previous version of the
OS, when the VoiceOver cursor landed on any message/thread to which you have
replied, this would be reported. Now, it is not. The only status that is
reported is the read status; that is, if you have not yet read the message,
VoiceOver will say, "unread."

I eagerly await your reply.

Thank you,

Mark

Re: very bad impression about 10.7.3 was Re: 10.7.3 is out!

2012-02-02 Thread Eric Caron
Hi William,

You and I have the same Mac Book. I noticed that when I opened Mail it was not
working correctly. I also notice my hard drive was busy. I waited a chunk of
time and when my hard drive stopped working Mail was ready to go. I noticed
when I opened iCal for the first time it also did some quick work before it was
ready. So I think if you open the application and wait a bit everything will
sort itself out. Well anyway that is what happened here with the same Mac Book.

Good luck

Re: memory dump (was confused about installing applications)

2012-02-02 Thread Alex Hall
If I can manage to get an adapter (I have one, but it doesn't seem to
fit the dvi to hdmi adapter that came with the mac) I will try it
first. I would love to get ahold of a cheap, small hdmi monitor, but I
don't have $100 to spend on something I will almost never even turn
on. Alright, list, hold me to this: don't let me complain about the
mac again until I at least have a functioning monitor connected. I'm
going to try to find a proper adapter ($10 is better than $100) as
well as do what some people talked about a while back and look on
public trade/selling sites like craigslist.com.

everyone, especially a business should buy a PERMANENT domain name. the
servicer of that name will provide email service. if you have a problem
with the servicer, you simply find another email servicer and have the
mail forwarded to them. while you are going through the pain of opening
the new email account, your messages are still available by going to
the site of the domain name servicer and accessing them directly. the
cost of holding the domain name is about $10 a year and you can also
register similar names to prevent others from trying to steal your
customers.

You just go to the menu's, then arrow down through the first one until you hear
"software update, then I think either press return, or command+O to open it.
I unfortunately haven't done an update in a while, so don't remember right

Re: memory dump (was confused about installing applications)

2012-02-02 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Memory dump is when the Mac is purged of fragments of memory that may not have
been properly cleared when the unit was turned off.

Remember, command+Option+r+p at power off and when you have those keys pressed
down, turn on the power. All your settings and stuff will be preserved.

Also, Alex, to speak frankly, You cannot let the negative experiences of some
make you believe that your unit is at fault. Sounds to me like maybe you need
a monitor hooked up to your machine. I seem to recall someone giving you that
advice at least a month ago. Here's what I say. You don't necessarily need a
real expensive monitor. By the cheapest monitor you like and connect it.
Frankly, I wouldn't count on using VGA adapters to get an old monitor going.
I'd go for a cheap new one and connect it.

I have had it for months, but the unresponsiveness in pretty much
everything and the difficulty in editing text means I don't use it
much. I know part of it is a monitor, and I am looking at dvi to vga

I think what you say makes sense. Unfortunately, Finder has such a lag

think braille display is better behaving

I'm not sure yet, but it looks like my braille display is behaving better after
the new update. I was having a fair amount of problem with not all of my
keystrokes going through. It's like they were out of sync or something. Now it
looks better. Of course, it could be this old proofreader can not write braille
these days, but who knows.

Re: VO or Chormevox with Google Chrome?

2012-02-02 Thread Mike Arrigo
Generally, I use chromevox. At this point, voiceover is unable to see list
boxes on web pages. Also, there are times where voiceover is no longer able to
click on items on the page. On the other hand, chromevox is more likely to
crash, fortunately you can have both and use what works best for you.

Re: very confused about installing applications

2012-02-02 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, Alex,

There are two ways to install files. When you browse within a disc image, you
will either find a file that says "installer package" or a .app file.

Here's how it works. Usually, you begin downloading the disc image. It is
mounted on your desktop when you open it. This does not mean you have installed
anything yet. You first have to go into the disc image and find out whether you
have an installer package or a .app file. If it's an installer package, the
process is similar to opening a Windows .exe file. If it's a .app file, you
will want to copy the .app over to your apps folder, so you can find it in the
future. You can run a .app from your disc image, but that makes things very
cluttered and hard to find.

Re: very confused about installing applications

2012-02-02 Thread Teresa Cochran
You don't have to mess with those files. In every disc image, there is a file
(or folder, actually) with a .app extension. That folder needs no
uncompressing. You just copy it over to your apps folder and then use it. If
you open a disc image and it says there's an installer package in the list of
files, then you use that file to install using prompts. Most of the time,
however, it will be a .app extension, which is ready to use.

They are pkg files, at least I believe they are. So I have to copy
files, not install? I am trying to not get frustrated even more with
the mac, but why package things up in a compressed format which
uncompresses (though getting it to do so is a guessing game) to some

work at all? I think I'm missing a lot about mac os...

Re: very confused about installing applications

2012-02-02 Thread Scott Howell
Hang on! WHen you say you are installing an app, how exactly are you doing this?
Are you opening the DMG file and just running the app or are you copying the
app from within the DMG to your applications folder.
Understand that when you download an app, you will be receiving it as a zip,
DMG, or some other archived file format.
Generally the app is contained in the archive and you only have to copy it into
the APplications folder. However, some apps come as a PKG or MPKG file which
you must run. THis is a package installer that installs the app and such into
the appropriate location.
If you are running the apps from within the archive and the disc images are
mounted to your desktop, when you reboot they disappear.

Re: lost contacts

2012-02-02 Thread Mr. L. Alexander
Hi wayne, I'm happy to help. firstly mount your iphone to itunes as normal, you
then navigate to your iphone and then go to the info tab. it's a good idea to
check if your contacts from your address book are being synced. if not, check
the box for "Sync address book contacts" then go to "apply" then sync. if this
doesn't work then go to your address book, check to see if you have all your
contacts stored there and then go back to itunes.

if there's a problem. go down to the advanced part of the info tab and check
addres book. then apply and then sync.

this should solve it

Please don't take this thread over as my query may not be answered. instead,
please repost this query if you are unhappy to the macvisionaries email.address
with a new subject header.

thanks in advance.

I think it does have one, but cannot be sure. If not, where would I
find this .app file, and why would it not already be there? Also, why
do other applications (audacity, filezilla) never show up, even though
they were installed from dmg files?

Re: VO or Chormevox with Google Chrome?

Hi,
I did all that, but for some reason it launches and says one thing and then
seems to crash. I'll give it a go and see if I can explain it better. I haven't
done it for a couple of weeks so I'll give it another go.

Re: VO or Chormevox with Google Chrome?

2012-02-02 Thread Teresa Cochran
Chromevox is a browser extension. You will have to install Chrome 1.6, and then
go to the webstore and grab Chromevox. Once the extension is installed, it
should start speaking when you launch Chrome. I find that Chrome works pretty
well with VO, too, though.

Re: very confused about installing applications

Hi, Alex,

I don't remember if Chrome has an installer. If an application doesn't have an
installer with prompts, you will need to find the .app file and copy it over to
your apps directory.

2012-02-02 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Ioana,

The only resource I can think of about KeyNote is an episode of the VoiceOver
on podcast in which I participated last year. It is episode 7 from February
2011.

Apart from that, I don't really know how I can help you. It all depends on what
you're trying to do. Are you using images, or just text? If it's just text,
that podcast should help.

Cheers,

Anne

VO or Chormevox with Google Chrome?

2012-02-02 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

Well, I'm starting to wonder of Chromevox has advantages over VO in Google
Chrome. I think there are pluses and minuses in both cases. For instance,
Chromevox doesn't seem to have keystrokes for going into the browser
preferences and navigating anything other than the content of a webpage. It's
an interesting project, though, and a promising start on a screen-reader to go
along with the Chrome OS.

OS X 10.7.3: Possible fix for those with problems

2012-02-02 Thread Blake Sinnett

Hi all,

I came across this article which tells how to fix the weird issues some might
be having with the new Lion update. In short, download the combo update and
install it over the current installation.

http://www.macrumors.com/2012/02/02/os-x-10-7-3-update-issues-fixable-in-many-cases-with-combo-version/

Following yesterday's release of OS X 10.7.3, a number of users in our forums
and at Apple's discussion forums began reporting issues with the update. The
most serious of these issues seems to be widespread crashing of apps generally
accompanied by an artwork error in the crash notice window in which the
window's buttons are replaced with graphics showing "CUI" and question marks.

In general, users have found that applying the combo version of the OS X 10.7.3
update rather than the standard delta version typically offered via Software
Update will fix the issues. The combo update can even be applied over an
existing installation that is exhibiting the problem.

With the crashing issues perhaps causing users difficulties in applying the
combo update to fix the problem, OS X Daily provides a nice summary of how this
can be accomplished:
The simple formula is this:

- Download Mac OS X 10.7.3 Combo Updater (direct link)
- Run the 10.7.3 Combo Updater on top of the existing 10.7.3 installation
- Reboot

If you can’t get to the desktop of the Mac in question, you can boot it with
Target Disk Mode (Firewire or Thunderbolt required), and then point the 10.7.3
Combo Update at the troubled Mac and install it that way. If your OS X
installation is totally screwed up and you can’t use target disk mode, you have
a few choices:

1. Restore from a recent pre-10.7.3 Time Machine backup, then install the Combo
Updater
2. Boot from Recovery HD, a Recovery Drive, or Lion USB drive, and reinstall
everything

Not the best situation, but hopefully you have recent Time Machine backups. The
report also notes that users who already updated and are unaffected by the
issues but still concerned that there may still be issues lurking can back up
their systems and simply install the combo version for peace of mind.

Hope this helps,
Blake

Re: 10.7.3 is out!

2012-02-02 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi list,

After updating to 10.7.3, my premium voices were no longer installed. I recall
this happening before after an update. luckily, I had my time machine back up
so, all I need to do was copy the voices from the backup to the proper place on
my Mac HD. I was wondering if anyone else had this happen to them after
updating?

Thanks.

Re: very bad impression about 10.7.3 was Re: 10.7.3 is out!

2012-02-02 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Things are working well here too. Two bugs are yet to be squished though, one
is the realspeak voices that seem to wonder in pitch and the other one has to
do with the Swedish and possibly other international realspeak voices that seem
to mispronounce some letters when typing them. A workaround for the last bug is
to put the typing echo to words, that helps.

FOcus 40 blue in the new 10.7.3 update.

2012-02-02 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi all.

Has anybody experienced problems with your focus 40 blue braille display in the
new update to lion.

I can not connect my bluetooth display anymore. I have tried to remove it and
add it again, but it looks as if the driver is missing.

Best regards Annie.

very bad impression about 10.7.3 was Re: 10.7.3 is out!

2012-02-02 Thread William Windels
Hello all,
I had a very bad experience with 10.7.3:
mostly all programs are crashing including mail, skype, yurufukurow, and about
mail , I wasn't able to start it.
(this are programs that are starting by default).
Also, osx seems to relogin by default when I try to start one of the programs
abouve: the usbscanner is making noice, I hear the welcome message of
voiceover. and the programs are starting again.

After this discovery, I have done a disk and permission repair from in the
recovery menu of Lion but this seems not to solve the problem.
Finally, I am setting back my last time-machine backup... :(

About my configuration:
I have a macbook from 2009: the one where sl was installed by default. There is
4 gb of ram and a default hd from 250 GB.

Are there some other people with equal problems?

Kind regards,
William Windels
