hello; what company are you with? there are some that are a little tricky. for example i have an account with people pc where i have to use smtpauth instead of smtp or it won't work. also, some require authentication be set and some are just as happy with it set to none. and on my yahoo business mail account sometimes it will send and sometimes it won't. in my aol account sometimes it will reject a particular email that address that is just fine. don't give up yet, macs are good machines and they usually play nice. take care, max On Apr 14, 2012, at 12:13 AM, Veronica Elsea wrote: > Okay, everyone, I'm really trying to like my new little MacBook air. Mail Problems, using Lion.
Okay, everyone, I'm really trying to like my new little MacBook air. I really am. And every time I get close, it bites! The first thing I tried to do on this machine was to set up my mail. I cussed and fussed at it for about two weeks, including a trip to the genious bar and we couldn't get it to accept my server for outgoing mail. It seemed to work okay if I set it to imap, but this is a pop mail account and it just seemed like something was broken here. Then one night, it just started working. I have no idea why. So I started to feel better about this computer. Now tonight as I attempted to write to this list about another subject, I can't send any more. It just says can't connect to this server and gives me the option of changing servers, of which there is no option. I have deleted and recreated this account so many times it's ridiculous. I have set up this account on a zillion, well okay, a few Windows computers with no problems, so I know I'm entering the right things. I actually did it over the phone with the people who host my server where my mail resides just to verify that I was correct. Anyone else have similar experiences? Any suggestions? Thanks. Adjusting system and VoiceOver volumes independently in Lion.
Okay, here was the question I was trying to ask when things really fell apart. This evening I found the David Woodbridge tutorial on adjusting the system volume and VoiceOver volume independently. In his example, he was playing a relax something in the background. When I did it, I was playing his mp3 tutorial. I then used the command-option-command left arrow to find volume. I then held down the modifier keys and moved down to lower the voiceover volume. I followed his exercise and then started moving back up. In his example, when he hit 96 per cent, the next thing was system volume 20 per cent. He could then raise, but not lower the system volume. In my attempt, after 95 per cent was 100 per cent and that was that. When I use function F11 to lower the system volume, it lowered VoiceOver as well. In trying to look around, I can't find any setting that refers to separating these two volume levels. I keep having this experience with his tutorials. He says do this and that will happen. I do this and just hear bink! According to the about this mac, I have 10.7.3. Where am I going wrong here? Thanks. a quick tip for you all
Hi all. I've been doing some messing around in system preferences in the keyboard section and wow have I really sped up keyboard performance. Slide the sliders for both "Key repeat" and "Delay until repeat" to 100%. You will see a big improvement in keyboard navigation. I really noticed this on one of the web sites that I visit that has no headings or other navigational elements to make navigation quicker. I was able to hold down VO right arrow, and just zip through the page. I'm hoping that this might translate in to better gaming performance in my virtual machine but I'm not holding my breath. Well, I just thought I'd share this tip with you all. I'd be interested to know other areas that speeding up the keyboard helps. Re: Guitar chords
Hi. I've tried many of the guitar apps of various kinds and most are not accessible with VO. Youtube can be a great resource, but, usually there isn't enough verbal description of what's being covered which can be quite frustrating... I've been teaching acoustic and electric guitar for over ten years now. If you'd like me to send you a document spelling out the basic open and bar chords etc, drop me an e mail off list and I'll send it your way. I have a whole series of reference docs I've written up covering scales and warm up exercises etc. If you wanted the whole lot, I'm sure we could work something out. I offer lessons via Skype and mp3 if you or anyone else out there might be interested. Please get in touch for more info. Thanks, Cameron. Re: speech recognition not working for me with vo on
Hey Ioana. If I were you, I wouldn't use the speech recognition. I've found way too many problems with it. On my end, it interfered with my energy saver preferences after it was triggered, meaning my screen wouldn't dim after the specified period of time I had it set at until I restarted, and a friend of mine when she had it on made her Skype all wonky. It muted her microphone somehow so she had to turn it off and now her Skype is back to normal. So you really aren't missing much, although if you wanted your computer to act like Siri on your iPhone somewhat, I'd understand that. Re: Tips for reading PDF documents on the Mac
That's a real disappointment that the conversion or rendering of PDFs into Safari doesn't preserve table markup. Frankly, I hate it when screen readers and some of the OCR programs want to linearize a table. Try and imagine parsing a bus schedule or bank statement with say 8 to fifteen columns across and have that thing strung out into a vertical list. Just say No! I won't go there. I think two dimensional table navigation with the screen reader or VO is the best thing that has ever happened. But I like the idea of being to pull PDFs into different rendering environments if possible. Oh, another program that parses PDFs including scanned PDFs is Docuscan from Serotek. I bought the Windows version last summer and just learned that I can also use it from the mac for no additional charge. I had reaceived a fax of a PDF and I downloaded the image and had Docuscan read it and it worked pretty well. Anyway, it's just another idea using some commercial software to parse PDF documents. That's interesting; I had no idea Spotlight was involved with these issues. Bill, I do indeed use and like column view in the finder but it will be interesting to see if list or icon view yield different results. So far, the problems I encountered have been with my external 2 TB hard drive. At this point, I now have files on both partitions so I'll have to look into this with some SD cards or something. Yes, I confirm the problem goes away once something is copied onto that drive. Yes Esther, you're right; I do have a lot of Linux experience so the Unix stuff in the shell is no problem for me. I don't recognize that specific shell command off the top of my head but it might be an Apple specific thing; who knows. Hi Ioana, When not using headsets, I believe the place where speech recognition is detected is in a different location from where the output speakers are located that speak with VoiceOver. Re: Previous Recipiants Mail Question
Hi Emilio! You can create a group in address book for future mail sending. You can enter multiple addresses in the to, cc and bcc fields to send. I do not know of a way to rename addresses in the previous recipients. I've tried previously with no luck. I've always kind of wondered why that is there. It doesn't seem to let you do anything. Re: How To Get Web Braille or Braille Formatted Titles Into iBooks
Thanks also, Mark. I definitely would like to try this method of reading BRF files now that I bought my new Refreshabraille. In case some of you are like me and never use iTunes to sync my iPod, you could copy the converted file to your dropbox folder and then use the dropbox app on the IOS device to push it into iBook. Of course, this assumes you have a dropbox account and the appropriate tools in place. Anyway, I had no idea it would be that easy to do this. I personally have no experience with .BRF files so far. Absolutely. What topic would you like? You can also search Malarsie and accessibility and Mac and it should bring some up. My series is called How to be Blind and I have about 40 videos posted. The first 15 or so don't have any real editing done but the other ones have a jingle and titles and stuff. Re: Searching in iTunes
Hi All, Just to follow up on Tim's remark about accessing categories in the iTunes search field, that you can quickly navigate to with the shortcut Command-Option-F: this feature is available for both Snow Leopard and Lion. I think it arrived for VoiceOver users in iTunes 10.5 (which debuted around October 2011). Remember to have Quick Nav turned off, or you won't find this feature by pressing down arrow, even though VoiceOver will still let you type text into the text field and do the search (without specialized category selection.) For earlier versions of iTunes up through the present ones, including on computers running older versions of Mac OS X Leopard and TIger, you can do these category searches by toggling on your column browser (Command-B). This allows even more combinations of searches (e.g. finding albums by an artist you're searching for in a particular genre, etc.) But Tim's tip does let you speed up searches from the search field, without having to use the browser. Another iTunes related comment: in order to use an iPhone with iCloud services, you know that you have to be running Lion and the latest version of iTunes. And using the most recent iPad requires iTunes 10.6. However, if you want to use an iPhone 4 and the latest iPod Shuffle, even just using iTunes to sync, and not relying on iCloud services, you must at least be running the latest version of Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.8). And that means that older PowerPC and Intel Macs must be upgraded to at least Leopard. The Leopard upgrade discs seem to be going for way above their original list prices (around $129, I think). You can supposed still order this from Apple if you need to upgrade your system, but it will cost the list price and shipping charges. However, informally, if you purchase an iPhone 4 from an Apple Store, and have an older machine that is upgradable to Leopard, I've seen that my local Apple Store will just upgrade your system for you so that you can download a later version of iTunes and use your new iPhone. Just FYI and not official. Otherwise, I think you're stuck at iTunes version 9.2.1 (July 2010 release). HTH. How To Get Web Braille or Braille Formatted Titles Into iBooks
Hello Listers: I am cross-posting this to both the v iPhone and Mac Visionaries mailing lists. I just published the following to the Candle Shore BLOG: How To Get Web Braille or Braille Formatted Titles Into iBooks Hello Everyone, The following instructions are for those who, like me, want to enjoy their Braille formatted titles in iBooks using a refreshable Braille display, only. NOTE 1: At the time of this post, it is not possible to import Web Braille or Braille (.BRF) files directly into iBooks. NOTE 2: I strongly encourage interested parties to send an email to Apple Accessibility (accessibil...@apple.com) requesting that Web Braille or Braille formatted (.BRF) files be added to iBooks list of supported formats. NOTE 3: In order to use iBooks on your iOS device, it must first be downloaded from the iTunes App Store. NOTE 4: This document assumes that you are familiar with the iBooks interface. NOTE 5: This document assumes that you understand the difference between Literary Braille (Grade 1/Grade 2) and Computer Braille. NOTE 6: This document assumes that you know how to add files to your iTunes Library for data syncing with your iOS device. NOTE 7: The following instructions are for those using either a Windows PC or an Apple OS X computer. NOTE 8: Before you begin, make sure you have either a PDF converter or eBook (.EPUB) converter already installed on your computer. NOTE 9: Many popular word processors such as Apple's Pages 9.x or Microsoft word 2007 or later can convert files to at least one of the required iBooks supported formats. NOTE 10: Keep in mind that, all things being equal, a Web Braille or Braille formatted (.BRF) file is a plain text document. 1. On your computer, open a Web Braille or Braille formatted (.BRF) file in your favorite text editor, word processor, or web browser. 2. Select and copy the contents of the opened file to your computer's Clipboard. 3. Paste the contents of your computer's Clipboard into your favorite PDF or eBook (.EPUB) converter and save the file, accordingly. 4. Import the newly saved file into your iTunes Library. The title will appear on the Books Tab in the iTunes Library Source Pane. NOTE 11: It may be necessary to enter the Preference area of iTunes in order to display the Books Tab. 5. Sync your iOS device to iTunes. 6. On your iOS device, open iBooks and locate your newly imported title. 7. After opening the Web Braille or Braille formatted (.BRF) title in iBooks, if necessary, mute VoiceOver, Apple's software screen reading solution for the blind and low vision. 8. If necessary, on your refreshable Braille display, toggle to uncontracted Braille (G-Chord). 9. If necessary, on your refreshable Braille display, toggle to 8-Dot Braille Mode (Dots 2, 3, 6 Chord). That funky screen
Every other time I turn on my Mac mini, I get a screen that looks like it might want my password. I try to enter it but it doesn't no good. I was told how to handle it a long time ago but I've forgotten as my computer was in storage for a while. If I manually turn it off and turn it back on it goes straight to the desktop so I'm not sure what's going on but I'm ready to scream. Re: Mirroring a Folder
I think they just did that to save some typing. The end result is you'll do rsync -rvv and then the path to the two folders. You can abbreviate the folder for your account with a ~ symbol. So the first part would typically be rsync -rvv ~/Music followed by the path to your destination. The destination will be the path /Volumes/ followed by the name of the external drive. Note that spaces need to have a reverse slash \ in front of them so it knows not to interpret the two parts as separate items. So if your second drive was called My Backup and the folder on there was also called Music then the full command would be rsync -rvv ~/Music /Volumes/My\ Backup/Music But to directly answer your question, you can also use copy paste to put those paths in. So you could navigate to your backup drive, find the folder you want to sync to and hit copy, then got to terminal and hit paste. That will paste in the full path with backslashes or whatever. Re: Finder Busy Finder Busy with Empty USB Drives!
Hi Steve, Actually, if you want to disable Spotlight indexing of all externally mounted volumes of any type, you don't need to know the name of your device. Just go to System Preferences > Spotlight, select the "Privacy" tab, then navigate to the "Add" button and press it with VO-Space. In the dialog window that appears, use the keyboard shortcut Command-Shift-G. Then, in the text box of the dialog window, type: /Volumes (that's a slash symbol, immediately followed by the word "Volumes") and press the return key. That will keep Spotlight from indexing any externally mounted devices, and you can perform this set up action at any time. Note that you may not want this all-inclusive behavior, if you mount external hard drives that you want to search for stored files. HTH.
