RE: backing up apps in itunes
Well in iTunes if you back up your apps everyday and you have an app that was updated today persay and you update it on the phone then backed it up to iTunes the old version of the app will be removed and replaced with the new one. Re: iPhone 4S: is it really awesome?
Hi Venkatesh I have not noticed a significant battery problem from my iPhone 4 and when i fot 4S. You might want to get a portable battery charger you can carry around. That's at I did, but I seldom have to use it from within my purse. I think the dictation feature is pretty good, but then I am doing it with a southern U.S. accent. Having said that, I have to be careful to say my words clearly so Siri will understand me. iBird Explorer Pro and iBird United Kingdom & Ireland apps on sale for $0.99
Hi All, I know that some of you like and use birdsong apps. The iBird Explorer Pro app is currently on sale for $0.99 to celebrate iBird's 3-year anniversary. This is their premier app that normally costs $29.99 (although they've recently reduced the price to $14.99 before this sale). It lists 924 birds of North America with an extensive repertoire of audio sound tracks and description of habits, habitat, phonetic rendition of characteristic calls, etc., and with professional extra features over the iBird Explorer Plus app, and is a universal binary. The other apps on sale for $0.99 are the iBird United Kingdom & Ireland app (price dropped from $4.99) and the iBird Pro HD app (dropped from $9.99) that is specifically for the iPad. This is a limited time sale. I'm cc'ing to the macvisionaries group, as well. Here are the app store links: • iBird Explorer Pro http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ibird-explorer-pro/id308018823?mt=8 • iBird UK & Ireland http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ibird-united-kingdom-ireland/id424729739?mt=8 • iBird Pro HD (iPad only) http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ibird-pro-hd/id387946719?mt=8 HTH. Re: iPhone 4S: is it really awesome?
Hi, honestly, at this point I would just hold off. The 4S has already been out for 7 months. In 5 months or less there will more than likely be a new iPhone for you to pick up instead. And if you don't want to do that, you can get a 4S at a cheaper price once the new iPhone is released. Re: iPhone 4S: is it really awesome?
Hi, I won't be able to answer all your questions as I don't use the iPhone 4S, but I can answer your first question. I was recently trying out Siri on a cousin's iPhone. And, frankly, I was a little disappointed. This was because of 2 main reasons: First, Siri has a hard time understanding the Indian accent. They say that the accuracy of the results depends on the clarity of your voice and not your accent, but I personally found it really hard to communicate with Siri. And a few of my friends who've tried it have also had similar experiences. And, secondly, it doesn't contain any information about India. I searched for restaurants, multiplexes, malls, etc, but it didn't have any information regarding any of them. However, you can get better results if you try asking it to search the web for places in India. So, those are my views. I don't want to discourage you in any way, but, like you correctly said, the 4S is pretty expensive here, so I just thought I should let you know about my experience. And, lastly, I would be extremely grateful if you would be kind enough to reply to my mail which I had sent to you a few days ago. Re: iPhone 4S: is it really awesome?
1. I can't speak for Siri myself, but here in the UK I know it can't help you locate businesses for example restaurants. 2. I believe the text dictation feature works for all except password text fields for obvious reasons. 3. The camera on the 4s is 8 megapixel compared to the 3gs which is only 3. So performance will no doubt be a huge improvement. There is also a front facing camera which is useful for features like Facetime. 4. I can't comment on VoiceOver and Siri interacting together sorry. 5. Because of the dual core A5 processor in the 4s, I have no doubts that VoiceOver will be very responsive on the 4s compared to the 3gs. 6. Can't comment on the battery sorry. I have heard in the past that there were battery issues on some iPhone 4s. Hope any or all of this helps. Christopher Hallsworth On 08/05/2012 20:16, Venkatesh Potluri wrote: Hi listers. Re: anyone use Keynote?
Hi Philippa, Chris, and Others, I think the recommendation for presentations with Keynote is to export the presentation as a PDF file using the "Export…" option that can be selected from either the "File" menu or the "Share" menu on the Keynote menu bar, choose an output format of PDF, and then display the PDF output using the free app named "Skim". Skim has been described as "Preview on steroids". It is similar to Preview, but has additional features. One of these features is a "Presentation mode" for displaying presentation slides in PDF format created by applications such as PowerPoint, Keynote, Open Office, or TeX slide packages such as Beamer. To enter presentation mode, use the shortcut Command-Option-P, or else go to the "View" menu to select this. You can also set up your transition options with Command-Control-T. Note that presentation mode correctly displays your slides, which the full-screen mode of Preview and Skim does not. And you can read all content with VoiceOver using the PDF version of your presentation this way. This subject was recently discussed on the Mac-access list, and you can read the posted discussions for the thread, "accessing power point presentation on the mac" at the Mail Archive web site for that list. I'll point you to one of the relevant posts: http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/msg09136.html Read down the thread using Control-N to access the next post. If you want to read up the thread use Control-P to access the previous post. Skim is a Sourceforge project, but to find it, and most other Mac programs, do a Google search for this software at the MacUpdate site by using Command-Option-F to move to the Google search bar in Safari, then type "skim macupdate" and press return. The MacUpdate site provides standard format listings of software that includes a short description, basic information on the latest version and its release date, information on whether this is a paid or free app, and direct links to download the program and to visit the developer's site. You can also read comments about the app, and suggestions for alternatives. The MacUpdate page link for Skim is: http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/24590/skim HTH. Re: Curious trash/deleted mail issue.
Yep, go to your gmail account on the web and delet all your messages by hand, screen by agonizing screen. It's what I had to do, finally. things in my mail world still aren't acting as they used to, but are more normal then before. also, make sure you read that good article robert Carter sent awhile back-I dug through the archives for it, but it did help some as well as what I said above about actually going to the web part of google and doing the deletion by hand. mail problems, anyone?
Hi, Is anyone else having problems with mail acting sluggish with gmail lately? For instance, I use the vo j command to read my messages, and I use the new view and lots of times lately, if there are several messages in a conversation, after I read the first message in the conversation, I hit delete and instead of going on to the next message as mail used to do, it just sits there. If I use vo j to go back to the messages column, the count is one less message then before, but when I go back into the conversation, the message I just read is still there. Anybody know what's going on? This is frustrating! thanks, Caitlyn -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. iPhone 4S: is it really awesome?
Hi listers. I am currently using an iPhone 3Gs. I am considering to get a new 4S. I have a few questions. I am sorry for a long email. the 4S is an expensive purchase so I wish to be very sure before I decide. 1. I watched many videos of siri. from that, I learn it is really good in speech recognition. well, since you will be using it daily, what do you think about it's recognition capabilities? How good is it at texting? I also saw a couple of posts in this list about vo and siri not working properly together. Does it really prove to be inconvenient? 2. text dictation. I read that there is an option to say the text we wish to type in an edit field on pressing a microphone button on the keyboard. Is this only in the messages app or works in any edit field (even in 3rd party apps like Facebook and whatsapp messenger)? and, how is the accuracy of the recognition? 3. Looktel apps on 3GS vs 4S I am planning to purchase the money reader and the recognizer in the near future. Is there a significant performance difference in terms of recognition time and accuracy? 4. VO and battery in 3Gs vs 4S since updating to iOs5, VO lags quite often. It responds late when I move my finger on the touch keyboard and by the time I remove my finger, it enters a different character from what I actually intended to enter. Does this happen in the 4S too? and how is the battery life of the phone after the 5.1 update? Your suggestions would be of great value and will help me in making the right choice. Re: anyone use Keynote?
Are you sure you have it turned on in the Presenter's Display? Showing them in the view menu doesn't mean they will be shown when you are presenting. Turn this on by going to Preferences (command-comma) and then find Presenter Display in the toolbar. Select that and then navigate to the list of checkboxes. In there should be a "Notes" checkbox which needs to be checked to show your presenter's notes in the presenter's display. I have a container on a page like this: and I stuff random numbers in there once every three seconds with a javascript method like this: function update(){ var r,f,d=document; //Create a 5 digit random number r=(""+Math.random()).substr(2,5); //Create a span with the new entry and append it to the list f=d.createElement("span"); f.innerHTML=r+""; //Add it to the chat log d.getElementById("box1").appendChild(f) //Do it again in a little while setTimeout("update()",3000); } What I expected was that as each number was injected into box1 the live region stuff would cause VO to read it. What actually happened was that all the numbers were read. This would be the equivalent of setting aria-atome="true" but it's supposed to default to "false". Event setting atomic="false" had no effect. Running this same demo on Jaws on Firefox on Windows 7 works just fine as does NVDA. So is seems like there is some kind of basic VO live-region weirdness. CB On 5/7/12 4:22 PM, Doug Lawlor wrote: Hello list: I am working with a binary options broker who has live regions on their web site that update with pricing information. I can find the region and get it to speak by arrowing over it using quickNav. I'm sure VO/left and right arrows will do the same thing. The problem I am having is when I'm focused on this region VoiceOver does not speak it as it's being updated. I have Live regions enabled in the Web tab of the VoiceOver utility. Anyone else have any pointers on this? Thanks, Doug -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Sysdiagnose Folder Keeps Opening Spontaneously In Finder
Never heard of this before. Apparently there is a sysdiagnose command in terminal which dumps a pile of system information into a set of files with the idea that you could send it to Apple to help resolve some issue. So this doesn't sound like something normally used, not to mention something that should just be auto-launching. By default the output is stored in the hidden folder "var" in a sub folder called "tmp" with a name that looks something like this: sysdiagnose_May.08.2012_10-00-06.tar.gz Ahhh, here's a possibility: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3310720?start=0&tstart=0 Apparently sysdiagnose can be triggered by the key combination of control-option-command-shift-period Any possibility you typed something like this? Re: anyone use Keynote?
I found navigation while presenting to be buggy, at least with the usual 'dual screen' setup. I did find that after starting the presentation (command-option-p) that if I command-tab away from keynote and then command-tab back again VO focus seems to clear up and I can then navigate all the buttons and find the presenter's notes. Before that it was just weird and I couldn't find much of anything. Hope this works for you. Correction: Re: Sysdiagnose File Keeps Being Highlighted Spontaneously In Finder
I should make a correction. It's a temp folder that opens, and various files with the name sysdiagnose (that is, for those not spelling it out, s-y-s-d-i-ay-g-n-o-s-e) along with a date.
