Re: Amadeus Pro Tutorial

2012-11-13 Thread Les Kriegler
Hi Esther,

I highlighted the link and typed VO-Shift-M and chose download linked file.
What I got was a file with an extension of .mp3 and .html. When I opened it, I
saw the file name and that was it. I think I've seen this behavior before.
How can this be rectified? Thanks.

Re: Resize PDF using Preview or Other Alternative

2012-11-13 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Using Preview, this is totally accessible with VO:

1. Open the existing pdf.
2. Choose Export from the File menu.
3. Navigate to the Quartz Filter pop-up menu.
4. Select Resize.
5. Make sure it will save to the correct location then pRess the Save button
or press return.

That should do it. Depending on your pdf, it should reduce it about half.

Later...

I do not know how to resize PDF files while insuring the integrity of the file

These are college transcripts I am trying to upload to an online application

I am not sure if this will be something for which I will need sighted

Transcript 1 = 2.5MB, transcript 2 = 2.8MB, and transcript 3 = 640KB.

Opinions on I Mac.

2012-11-13 Thread Nicholas Parsons
I tried remapping the VoiceOver keys originally. However, no matter how you
remap the keys, you'll never get a control, command and option key on both the
left and the right of an Apple bluetooth keyboard. And as so many of the Mac OS
X and VoiceOver keystrokes require a combination of these keys, I find it
really much faster and easier when I have them on both sides. Granted, it might
be worth the inconvenience of a missing key on the right in order to be able to
take the keyboard away from your desk, but to be honest, I didn't really do
this all that often. Plus, the Apple USB keyboard has two additional USB ports
in it, so by using the Apple USB keyboard you in fact gain USB ports, not lose
them.

At the end of the day though it's just a personal preference. I just really
wish Apple would squeeze that one additional key on to the right side of the
space bar. It doesn't seem too much to ask and it would make it so much more
user friendly.

I agree with all the other iMac comments by everyone else. It's really great to
have it on and ready to go 24/7. I'm just jealous you'll be getting a fusion
drive. ;)

Re: Using numpad as a calculator

2012-11-13 Thread Esther
Hi Stacey,

You need to turn off NumPad Commander to use the NumPad as a
calculator? I think you can turn this on or off by pressing VO-Clear,
where the Clear key on the NumPad might be above the "7" key. You can
certainly turn off NumPad Commander from VoiceOver Utility (VO-F8),
under the "Commanders" menu in the NumPad Commander tab by unchecking
it. then when you're using the Calculator application, you can simply
press the NumPad keys for the numbers and operations. Incidentally,
you can also access the Calculator and NumPad commander key
definitions from a laptop keyboard if you install an free
(donationware) application named KeyRemap4MacBook. You just have to
press the Fn key in addition to corresponding keys for the embedded
keyboard on the right side of the keyboard. I found that I could turn
NumPad Commander off with VO-Clear using the embedded NumPad keys
(with Fn key), but to turn it on again, I either had to turn VoiceOVer
on and off and press VO-Clear, or I had to use VoiceOver Utility.

You may get a better answer from someone who regularly uses an
extended keyboard.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Google Plus?

2012-11-13 Thread Tim Hornik
The way this has ben done in the past involves the following. First all users
enter Hangouts with Extras.. Visually impaired users use Chrome and install the
Accesible Hangouts plugin made by Mohammed Mansuer, I believe. There are some
tools that allow you record the Hangout, though I never did that part.

It is possible, to pull off, but does requires practice. There was even an
attempt to create a call center using blind individuals as the operators,
Google Hangouts as the interface, and some other pieces.

Hope this helps,

Help Topic Unavailable Message Revisited: Bug or Not?

2012-11-13 Thread Teresa Cochran
Hi, all,

Ok, I'm starting to think this is a bug. I've gone to ~/library/caches/hlpd and
deleted it several times, and each time, the problem clears up for a few days,
and then it's back. Help always has this generic message: "For best results,
connect your Mac to the Internet". or: " This help topic is currently
unavailable. Make sure you're connected to the internet. If you're connected,
try again later." I'm on a cable connection, always on.

Anyone having this issue, or found out anything about it?

Thanks,

"Download" link that is listed just after the "Create a Dropbox account" link

Also, just to add to background information, you can test out trial versions of
both Amadeus Pro and Amadeus Lite from their download web pages:
* Amadeus Pro
http://hairersoft.com/pro.html#4
• Amadeus Lite
http://hairersoft.com/lite.html#4

The Pro version has more features, such as batch processing and buttons to
easily split stereo tracks. Alex asked what features Amadeus Pro has that are
not in Audacity. Some of these include batch processing, toolbar buttons for
adding/splitting/deleting tracks, fading in/out, and access to metadata/info,
ability to join a batch of files together at once, controls and shortcuts for
extending sound to particular marker-points (demonstrated in Mike's podcast,
also in the reply I wrote to your query about ringtone creation on the
Mac-access list), more custom controls for trimming silence, denoising, and
automatic splitting (for example, at silence points.) I think it does better
on multi-channel editing and recording.

Audacity is a good, free, cross-platform editor, so there are advantages to
using it on multiple operating systems. Amadeus Pro is optimized for the Mac
GUI.

Re: VoiceOver behaviors in Safari

Curious as to what benchmarks you used which found Safari slower than
other browsers. Everything I could find shows Safari either the fastest
or maybe #2. Maybe there is something wrong. I've heard Safari
preferences can get corrupted and bog things down. Booting into recovery

enough of a difference to make me wonder. So I decided to install it.
Now that I have been using it for a few weeks, I have noticed a very specific
behavior with VoiceOver and especially when it comes to Safari.
A couple of weeks ago on this list, people were saying how VoiceOver doesn't
automatically interact with the HTML content in Safari. I have discovered there
are 2 causes for this. One reason is that the page has not completely loaded.
This can happen a lot because Safari is considered one of the slowest browsers.
For some reason, it takes much longer to load a page than other browsers. If
VoiceOver detects that it is not 100% done loading the page, it will not
automatically interact wit the html content.
The other reason has to do with how VoiceOver works with Safari. I have
discovered that about 50% of the time, VoiceOver will interact with the html
content automatically when the page is finished loading, and the other 50% of
the time, it doesn't. The 50% of the time it doesn't, a few things will happen.
It will not automatically interact with the html content, it will not announce
the percentage while the page is loading, and if you return to a previous page,
it will likely not remember the last position.
I also discovered that by toggling VoiceOver off the on, this issue will go
away. It does get a little annoying that 50% of the time you browse the
internet, VoiceOver is not behaving as expected and you will need to toggle
VoiceOver to fix it.
Overall, it's still not bad compare to Lion and Snow Leopard. There was a
version of Lion that when VoiceOver is not working correctly in Safari, it
cannot locate any headings. So I feel that it has improved, but still has ways
to go.

Using numpad as a calculator

2012-11-13 Thread Stacey Robinson
Hi, I am using a USB keyboard with my white 2009 macbook.
How do I use the numpad as a calculator?
What do I do step by step to fix it so the numpad doesn't think it's a
commander for other things?
Thanks,
Stacey Robinson and GEB dog Chesley

Re: Amadeus Pro Tutorial

2012-11-13 Thread Esther
Hello Chris,

I haven't had a problem with Mike's links and listened to his podcast on my
iPhone from his very first post. Can you just try downloading the file from
mail on your Mac? If nothing else, use VO-Shift-M when focused on the link to
his Dropbox file. And you should be able to use the "Download" link that is
listed just after the "Create a Dropbox account" link in your post.

Also, just to add to background information, you can test out trial versions of
both Amadeus Pro and Amadeus Lite from their download web pages:
* Amadeus Pro
http://hairersoft.com/pro.html#4

GUI.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Okay, this does help. I had All Signatures highlighted, and changed to G Mail.
So I put in my first name, and that shows as the default. Then I created a

Navigate to the info tab, it may be called something different, and look for

Re: Signatures in Mail

2012-11-13 Thread Chris Bruinenberg
Hi.
Did you make sure you didn't put the signature in the wrong account when you
created it?
I made that mistake. I don't use iCloud mail but it ended up there and i had to
create a new one for my gmail account.

changing the genre of iTunes Albums?

2012-11-13 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

I have some albums whose genre I would like to change. For example, they show
as Classical, I'd like them labeled Holiday. Anyone know how to do this?
TIA,
Donna

Okay, when I composed a new e-mail, the options I saw were none which was

Re: Timestamping documents in Pages

2012-11-13 Thread Chris Blouch
Start by using insert date and time someplace in the document using the
Insert menu-> Date & Time. After that I select that date and do a
VO-shift-M to bring up the contextual menu. From there choose Edit Date
and Time. This will bring up a little modal dialog and the second tab
stop is the "automatically Update on Open" checkbox. The tricky part
here is that I couldn't get out of that dialog as the escape key does
nothing and focus seems to be trapped in there. Only way I could get out
was to command-tab to another app and then come back. I couldn't find
this date setting in any of the menu items but maybe I missed it.

I looked in the insert menu up in the menu bar, but didn't see a way to do this
manually.

I'll admit, I didn't look in the pages menu under services. I wonder if maybe
I could do it from there.

Re: Google Plus?

Plus with that approach of having all participants record their part of the
podcast and then send it to you for the final edit I would think that you would
lose the interactivity of all participants as they would not be able to talk to
one another in order to have a conversation. I think that that the
conversational aspect of doing a podcast like this is crucial. JMO

Re: Signatures in Mail

2012-11-13 Thread Harry Hogue
You add the signature, and once the signature is added, you will have an
additional option as you tab through a new message creation, which will be for
selecting what signature you want to use. If you only have one, this isn't a
problem -- you can choose to use the signature or not, I think. If you have
multiple signatures, for multiple accounts, for example, you can select what
signature should be used.

Hope this helps,

Re: without passing through router?

2012-11-13 Thread Chris Blouch
Seems a bit slow. I usually get about 10GB/hour throughput on wifi
backups, so I would expect 125GB to easily complete in a day. Of course
if your machine goes to sleep or other things use up bandwidth your
mileage may vary. There was also discussion about issues with slow
performance on wifi in certain situations which seems to be an OSX bug:

https://discussions.apple.com/message/19083821#19083821#19083821

That said, once you get your first backup done the incrementals should
be much faster.

With respect to the Internet connection being lost when the ethernet
cable is connected. Try going to the System Prefs, in the Network

then drag the WIFI above the Ethernet service. This should allow
the WIFI to maintain its Internet connection but still allow
connectivity between computers with the ethernet cable. Note that

Hello.

That is really great of you to do this for me.

I already have a BT Apple keyboard and intend to buy the Apple USB keyboard
which I didn't know about.

I am going to get the new I Mac with SSD and Fusion drive and RAM isn't going
to be an issue. When I'm ready I'm going to do it properly and after that a
Mac Book Air when I'm ready and if I need to just for portibility. Keep the

Thank you very much.

Re: Adding CDs to iTunes that are not on the database

2012-11-13 Thread Esther
Hi,
I'll add a couple of points about the Gracenote database. First,
there are standards for syntax and formatting for submission listed in
their web page FAQ:
http://www.gracenote.com/about/faqs/
Navigate to the heading on "Are there guidelines for submitting
(uploading) CDs?" to read them. Secondly, the entries I am most
likely not to find there are for multi-disc audiobooks. I don't
particularly like having each disc with a different album title (e.g.,
"[Disc 1]", "[Disc 2]", etc. apended at the end of the album title),
especially since there chosen format (with no leading 0 on the number)
won't sort correctly for more than 9 discs. So I may submit following
their syntax rules, but then go back and change the album to a single
album name for my own library. (This is more work.) Thirdly, if you
edit the tracks names of the CD before ripping, as you would have to
do for submission to Gracenote, then they will show up with those
track names whenever you insert the CD again (using iTunes on that
computer), whether or not you submit information to Gracenote. If you
only edit the track titles for the imported content this will not be
true; the tracks will instead be named Track 1, etc.

HTH, Cheers,

Esther

Re: Opinions on I Mac.

2012-11-13 Thread Alex Hall
I want to remind everyone of the great remapping app for the mac. With this
app, you can map the vo keys to the capslock key, or (I believe) map the right
command key to control, giving you vo keys on the right and left. If you plan
to move around with your keyboard, perhaps sitting across the room from your
iMac, then the bt keyboard combined with the afore mentioned app may serve you
better. It's all subjective, though, and if you find yourself using the
home/end and numpad keys a lot then the full keyboard may be best, but there's
something to be said for having a wireless keyboard you can take anywhere in
the room and that does not take up one of your usb ports.

Opinions on I Mac.

2012-11-13 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI,

I bought a mid 2011 iMac 21" 2.7 GHz quad-core i5 processor with 4GB of RAM and
1TB HD earlier this year, along with a 13" MacBook Air 128 GB SSD with 1.7 GHz
i5 processor.

Basically, I absolutely love my iMac and don't regret buying it. I only
slightly regret missing out on the new fusion drives, but not much I can do
about that now.

I will offer a few observations though.

1. I Originally got my iMac with the standard BT keyboard. However, I found
that only having the VO keys on one side of the keyboard makes keystrokes like
VO-Shift-D and VO-Command-~ really difficult and life pretty sucky in general.
So, I bought a full Apple USB keyboard and this has made the whole Mac
experience so much easier and more pleasant. I really miss it now when I'm
using my MacBook Air. So my advice to you, if you get an iMac choose the USB
keyboard instead of the BT keyboard.

2. Despite having 4GB of RAM and a quad core processor, my iMac would become
"busy" surprisingly easy. This would happen most in iTunes and Safari. I've
since upgraded to 16GB of RAM and everything works so much more smoothly. I'd
really recommend upgrading your RAM. If price is an issue, you can buy RAM
online for fairly cheap.

3. For some things, e.g. loading ML and rebooting etc, my iMac is much slower
than my MacBook Air, despite it's much greater power. This is obviously due to
the MacBook Air's SSD. So, the iMac is great, but if you can get one with an
SSD or fusion drive I'd really recommend it, as an HD is the one thing that
will really noticeably slow it down. Although, I think a RAM upgrade is
probably better value for money.

4. Despite the super sexiness of my MacBook Air, I rarely use it in comparison
to my iMac. I only use it when I really need to, e.g. when I'm in class or on
holidays or away for business etc. The reasons I prefer my iMac are:
• I love having huge amounts of storage for all my audiobooks, TV
shows, podcasts, music etc. My iTunes library definitely takes up the vast
majority of my space.
• The internal speakers and microphone are great for listening to
music, watching movies and making Facetime or Skype calls. However, I do have
external speakers when I really want to get the party started.
• I love the full USB keyboard with VO keys on both the left and
the right, proper home and end keys, and a number pad which I use for the
calculator.
• It's huge amount of RAM is great for iTunes and Safari and
GarageBand etc.
• It's a lovely feeling (and apparently looking) machine, and is
super easy to set up etc as it's all in one piece. It's also great to have so
many available ports, and the optical drive is great for importing old CDs into
iTunes and watching DVDs etc.
• I have some sight, though very little. I kinda hoped that with
the big bright iMac screen I may be able to see something of movies. But
unfortunately those days seem to be beyond me. I can't really see much on the
screen and tend to use the screen curtain much of the time. However, It is nice
to be able to get some feedback from the screen. Importantly, the screen has
been useful a couple of times when I've needed to get some sighted assistance,
either when VoiceOver has been misbehaving, or where there's something
inaccessible in an app or webpage. Also, the big screen means my girlfriend and
I can watch movies together straight from iTunes on my iMac.

Hope these observations help you in your decision.

Some say that per-bit you get higher quality out of AAC, but when the
mp3 is twice as many bits it would be hard to imagine the AAC stuff
sounding better. That and mp3 is just more universally supported.

I have a subscription to sky.fm premium and decided to import some of their

Re: headphones question

2012-11-13 Thread Chris Blouch
I like circumaural headphones which are the kind which have large
circular pads that go around the ears rather than press against them. I
also like closed back because I often times use them to block out other
noise. If you like that combination then you might want to try the
Sennheiser HD250 Linear II. I suspect the model # or name might have
changed slightly but they have been making some variant of these for
years. Not cheap but you only buy them once. The ear pads are
replaceable and the cord also unplugs from each ear so it is also
replaceable. I have done both over the decade or so I've had them. The
HD280 or HD380 are probably the modern equivalent.

Re: Adding CDs to iTunes that are not on the database

2012-11-13 Thread Chris Blouch
One other tidbit is that after you go through the trouble of putting in
all that data it would be nice to submit it to Gracenote so others don't
have to do it again. With the CD selected and all the data entered go to
the Advanced menu and choose Submit CD Track Names. That way, after a
few days, your stuff will be used by Gracenote to populate track names
for anyone else who imports the same CD.

Hi Max,

When you insert a CD it should be highlighted in the iTunes sources list, and if you
press Command-I (Get Info) you should bring up a "CD Info" window. If the CD
is in the GraceNote database, then the information about Artist, Composer, Album, disk
number, genre, and year may be filled in. Even if it is, you can always override this
information for all tracks on your CD with your own data.

I find it easiest to fill in this information in the CD Info window, since the information in these fields will be applied to all tracks at once. If
this is a compilation album (e.g. one artist playing works by many composers), you can leave the "Composer" text box blank, and check the
box for "Compilation". For multi-disc albums, fill in the boxes to indicate whether this is disc "1" of "1" or disc
"1" or "2" of "2", etc. Add the year if you like, and choose a genre.

Using VO-Space on the "OK" button or simply just pressing "return" when you are
done filling in entries will apply your selections and close the window.

Now you have a choice: you can either start importing the CD, which will have the Album, Composer, Artist, etc.
information, but no track titles, or you can decide to fill in the track titles before importing the CD. If you want
to fill in the track titles before you import your CD, navigate to the songs table, interact, and select the first
track (VO-Shift-Space). Use Command-I to bring up the Get Info window for that track, and navigate (VO-Right arrow or
Right Arrow) to the "Info" tab and select it (VO-Space). Then move to the first text box and type in the
name of the track. Then navigate to the "next" button and press it with VO-Space. (You can also reach this
button by moving to the end of the window, and Left arrowing or pressing VO-Left arrow twice.) You'll be shown the
"Info" tab for the next track, where you can fill in the name (and other information you want). If you get
lost, the track number is one of the pieces of information that is automatically filled in. Continue to use the
"Next" button to move through all the entries.

Alternatively, you can import the CD, then location the album and fill in the
track names the same way from your iTunes database. That might be easier,
since you can just press space bar to start the track playing for your
identification.

The main difference from Alex's instructions is that the "CD Info" window is
easier to use as a quick way to fill in the Album information.

To print a list of album names by artist press Command-P to bring up the "Print" window, then navigate to the "Album list" radio button and
select it (VO-Space). Then continue navigating to the pop up button, VO-Space, and set it to "List of albums". Press "return" or VO-Space
on the "Print" button. In the "print" window navigate to the "PDF menu button" and select "Save as PDF". (Of course,
you can do this however you want -- or even view this in Preview or actually print.)

HTH. This may not be exact because I'm not running the latest version of
iTunes on the Mac which has a CD slot.

Cheers,

Esther

When you rip the cd, it may mark the files as unknown. I would do a
search for "unknown" with the group by album radio button checked,
then vo-space on your album (each unknown should have a date on it).
Once the cd is open, cmd-a to select all, then cmd-i to open the info
window. Select the second tab (I don't remember what it's called) and
you will have a bunch of checkboxes and edit fields to fill in (I
don't know what the checkboxes do, but I always check the one for any
edit field I fill in). Since this is for all the tracks, not just one,
only enter things like album name, artist, and other information that
applies to all the tracks as a group. Cmd-w to close the window once
you're done. Now you can go back and look up all those disks, naming
each track if you want to and entering other optional information like
track number, with that cmd-i command on any track or group of tracks.
Note that if you select multiple items, you will get a warning when
you press cmd-i; this warning does not come up for individual tracks.
I know it's a pain, but eventually you'll have a great database of
music searchable by track name, album, artist, and so on. Best of all,
with the right settings this makes it incredibly easy to sync only the
music you want onto your iOS device, if you have one, especially with
smart playlists. I hope this all made sense.

my mini doesn't seem to sleep

2012-11-13 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I have my mini set to turn the display off and sleep after half an hour, but I
don't think it does it. Sure the screen goes off, but it wakes up almost
immediately. On the other hand, when I put it to sleep using the menu item, it
takes much longer to wake up, which seems to indicate that the auto sleep
setting is not working. Any idea why this might be? Are there different types
of sleeping or something?

Have a great day,

Re: Google Plus?

2012-11-13 Thread Scott Rumery
Hi Mike,

We were going to try and use Google Plus for our podcast but we found it to be
very hard if not impossible to use. I do agree with you that this would be a
great option if it were completely
accessible, but it isn't at this point.

Do you plan on using Skype for the podcast? If so, we might have some trouble
with the sound quality at times. By this I mean that on my end when I am using
Skype will become a bit choppy and the person on the other end will have some
trouble hearing me. I think that we might be able to do something about this
though. If we are going to do this through Skype then maybe if we make sure
that nothing else but Skype and Voice Over is running on our computers. I am
not sure if this will help, but it couldn't hurt. Just a thought.

Re: Recording to an iDevice from a mixer

2012-11-13 Thread Chris Blouch

I haven't done this but found a page talking about some ways to do it here:

http://workingipad.net/tutorial/2011/6/18/record-analog-audio-via-35mm-line-out-or-microphone-jack-int.html

They seem to say the Headset Buddy will basically break out the in/out
connections on the headphone jack into two separate plugs. Then you can
run audio into one of those. For apps they reccommend TwistedWave and
iProRecorder. I would think GarageBand would work, at least if you're on
an iPad.

With the 2012 mac mini's, you do not have to buy an monitor, or and adaprtor

is my apple bt keyboard, I used the mouse to connect it, after that it was a
breeze. it sits on my end table, out of the way, and I can move up to 30

would recommend looking into a Mac book air or new Mac Book Pro.

In my case the Mini was bought used so I saved a significant amount, still
once I added in everything I could have probably just about baught a new

So for space convenience and value the Mini may not be the best choice. If

Re: Opinions on I Mac.

2012-11-13 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
Kawal,

I use the 27in iMac, and have had three since 2010. They are well made, easy to
navigate for ports etc, and powerful to run Voice Over without any form of
issue at all.

I would strongly recommend one with an SSD hard drive as that way it will be
super nippy.

if you are looking for something that just sits in the corner and will work
when you want it, no fuss, no getting it out and ready, just there, waiting to
be used,

Regards,

Neil Barnfather
