My radium stations are now working as before. But serious is not. Perhaps my

Oh right, well if you chose that option then I guess you're fine. No need to
worry so long as you can remember the answers to your three questions. I doubt
you'll forget the password though as you have to enter it every time you turn
on your Mac.

I hope they:
• Make VoiceOver announce a messages read/unread status, and the number of
messages in thread, before the message preview in Mail.
• Stop VoiceOver repeating text in nearby elements in Safari.
• Fix problems with column view in Finder.
• Label unlabelled buttons and images in iBooks.

Re: Getting back a forgotten recovery key using file Vault2 and V O

2013-11-16 Thread Daniel C
Strange. It has an option to store the key with apple so why wouldn’t they keep
it.
As far as the login, it only does it at first boot, if it awakes from sleep, it
uses regular voice over. Otherwise the beep method. It scared me at first, but
i got it right the first time.
VO+shift+c, good keystroke for me to remember. I’ll retry file vault if I can.
Though as I said, it’s odd that they have an option to store the key with
apple. I was told they encrypt the key and if you answer the 3 questions you
chose, then they’d give you the key.

Re: Getting back a forgotten recovery key using file Vault2 and V O

2013-11-16 Thread Nicholas Parsons
In Mountain Lion I was able to copy the key using VO-Shift-C, to copy the last
spoken phrase. You should be able to use this—it's a great one to remember when
VO can't interact and select text to be copied.

Apple will not be able to email you the key as Apple does not keep any copy for
security purposes. So if you didn't copy it or write it down that first time
you won't be able to get it back. Instead of getting the key, just write your
password down somewhere safe where you won't forget it. Somewhere like
1Password would be good as it will be encrypted and you can access it from
places other than your Mac, such as an iOS device. You might also like to just
save it in a text file somewhere like Dropbox, only don't indicate in any way
what it is (e.g. don't say File Volt Password, just write it somewhere you'll
know where to look, and even disguise it some way if you can). If your memory
is good, then I'd recommend not actually writing the password, just writing
down a good hint that you know will remind you of it if you one day forget.

Though I started to set up File Volt, I chickened out when it told me VoiceOver
wouldn't work properly on the login screen. How easy is it to login with that
beep method? And is that every time you login? Does it happen even at the login
screen when the Mac wakes from sleep, or only when first booting up?

Cheers,
Nic

Did you lose your password? You only need the key if you've lost your password
which you would have made up. And actually I did find some way to copy the
recovery key but maybe that was an older version of filevault and things have
changed.

Getting back a forgotten recovery key using file Vault2 and V O

2013-11-16 Thread Daniel C
Hey list,
I’ve enabled File Vault2, a way to encrypt your disk with sensitive information
or other info. But the recovery key I couldn’t write down as there is no way of
interacting with VO to copy the text of the key. So now, I no longer have the
key anywhere, and VO has a beep prompt at login because the voiceover service
does not fully come on when a disk is encrypted with File Vault2 enabled. The
only thing I get is 1 beep to tell me that I’m on a username field, 2 beeps to
indicate I’m on a password field, and 3 if I login correctly.
So my question is. Has anyone who use V O and who may have enabled File vault2
experienced this recovery key issue? If so, how did you get around it?

Re: Safari 2 items, 3 items and internal link?

2013-11-16 Thread Nicholas Parsons
The two items three items thing you're hearing is most likely lists with
several items. Whenever VoiceOver encounters a list or sub-list, it announces
how many items are in the list. I agree it's overly verbose and not really
necessary. It's VoiceOver treating the HTML and tags as a separate
element, which it's not. I wish there was a way to make VoiceOver read a
paragraph or whole HTML element at a time without being interrupted by links
and the like. I like the way I can navigate through webpages with JAWS on
Internet Explorer with control down arrow — I wish there was something similar
with VoiceOver.

For internal links, however, it's important that VoiceOver distinguishes these
from ordinary links. Ordinary links take you to another webpage, whereas
internal links take you somewhere else on the webpage you are currently on.
They are usually used to navigate from the top of the page to the start of the
main article or substance of the page. You probably come across those on many
pages called skip to main internal link and the like.

Best,
Nic

Much of it has to do with the way the page is written and how Voice Over is
seeing that code. So, in other words, it’s not a bug, rather, it’s got to do
with the new designing of pages and how we interact with it. Same with the
internal links. I suspect that clicking on these internal links reveals parts
of the page that could not otherwise be seen. the web is not going to stand

with the code must change with it and, frankly, so must our old and now
outdated perceptions of how we understand the web.

Alia is quite correct. IF I’ve got some audio that happens to be flac, (a

IMO the best way is just to open the files you want to play. command O is good

Apple asks developers to focus on Mail, Graphics in first Mavericks
10.9.1 beta

Apple on Friday supplied its development community with the first
beta of OS X 10.9.1 Mavericks, a forthcoming maintenance and
security update for the Mac operating system, and has asked testers
to focus their efforts on Mail, Graphics, and VoiceOver.

Mavericks

People familiar with the first OS X 10.9.1 beta said it is
identified as "build 13B27." The pre-release software is intended
for testing purposes, and is not yet finalized for public release.

OS X 10.9.1 will presumably mark the first update for Mavericks
since it debuted on the Mac App Store for free in late October
.
All Mac users with compatible systems running Snow Leopard or above
can upgrade to Mavericks

at no cost.

A minor update for Mavericks was issued last week

to patch an issue with the native Mail app for Gmail users. It was
issued via the Mac App Store.

Mavericks, named after a Northern California surf spot, brings
several new features to the OS X operating system, though Apple also
paid considerable attention to enhancing performance and battery
life with its latest major release. Stats published soon after the
release of Mavericks found that public adoption was three times
faster

than that of Apple's $20 Mountain Lion upgrade from 2012.

As Apple prepares its first maintenance update for Mavericks, the
company is also working on

its next major OS X release, version 10.10. Traffic data to
/AppleInsider/ published earlier this month revealed that testing of
the unnamed future operating system has been growing steadily.

Re: Safari 2 items, 3 items and internal link?

2013-11-16 Thread Ray Foret Jr
Well, if you interact with the two items and three items things, you will
notice that you can see items on the page that you cannot see without
interacting with those items. Not everything on the page is visible on the
surface look of the page. So, if you see an item with a label on it that says
something like info tab with five items, and you interact with it, you will
notice things there that you would not see until you interact with it. Why?
Much of it has to do with the way the page is written and how Voice Over is
seeing that code. So, in other words, it’s not a bug, rather, it’s got to do
with the new designing of pages and how we interact with it. Same with the
internal links. I suspect that clicking on these internal links reveals parts
of the page that could not otherwise be seen. the web is not going to stand
still for our benefit. It’s changing, and, the way Voice Over sees and deals
with the code must change with it and, frankly, so must our old and now
outdated perceptions of how we understand the web.

Ray just out of interest why do you think they shouldn't of posted it?

I hope they fix the Safari bug where Voiceover keeps repeating everything such
as links, bulleted items etc.
Yep that one is driving me crazy! Its even present on Mountain Lion.
So until its fixed, I'm sticking to webkit.
I recommend that all those who are beta testers just keep reminding Apple about
the bugs politely and professionally though of course.

Wining, cursing etc isn't going to get you any where.

Radium has been working fine for me, but I just now tried it on my Mac and I'm
getting nothing. When I try my saved sirius/xm stations, it kicks me into the

hit save, it just puts me back into that same dialogue. And other saved
stations are not playing. I wonder if something is down on Radium's end
somehow. This has been working perfectly, and there have been no updates that I
am aware of. Very weird.

Hi,

Yes. go to system preferences/ bluetooth. Your Mac should already be
discoverable. Put your jambox into pairing mode, and it should show up in the
table of available devices. Interact with the table, and press the pair button

Apple asks developers to focus on Mail, Graphics in first Mavericks
10.9.1 beta

Apple on Friday supplied its development community with the first beta
of OS X 10.9.1 Mavericks, a forthcoming maintenance and security
update for the Mac operating system, and has asked testers to focus
their efforts on Mail, Graphics, and VoiceOver.

Mavericks

People familiar with the first OS X 10.9.1 beta said it is identified
as "build 13B27." The pre-release software is intended for testing
purposes, and is not yet finalized for public release.

OS X 10.9.1 will presumably mark the first update for Mavericks since
it debuted on the Mac App Store for free in late October
.
All Mac users with compatible systems running Snow Leopard or above
can upgrade to Mavericks

at no cost.

A minor update for Mavericks was issued last week

to patch an issue with the native Mail app for Gmail users. It was
issued via the Mac App Store.

Mavericks, named after a Northern California surf spot, brings several
new features to the OS X operating system, though Apple also paid
considerable attention to enhancing performance and battery life with
its latest major release. Stats published soon after the release of
Mavericks found that public adoption was three times faster

than that of Apple's $20 Mountain Lion upgrade from 2012.

As Apple prepares its first maintenance update for Mavericks, the
company is also working on

its next major OS X release, version 10.10. Traffic data to
/AppleInsider/ published earlier this month revealed that testing of
the unnamed future operating system has been growing steadily.

Re: connecting speaker via bluetooth

Hi Les,

Actually, I was talking about doing it from the mac end; probably wasn’t clear.
How do you get the mac to search for the big jambox and then connect to it?
Is it in systems preferences under bluetooth somewhere? That’s what I can’t
find.

Re: Deleting Mail From Gmail site

2013-11-16 Thread Caitlyn furness
go intomail prefs on your mac. go to the accounts section and pick gmail.
then, go to the mailbox behaviours tab and in there you can pick what you want
mail to do with the messages. It’s a pop up button and you can pick deletion
on closing mail, keep deleted messages for one day, a week, a month, or the
first option. Also, make sure your deleted messages are going into the trash
and not being archived. You can check this in this same tab.

Re: Deleting Mail From Gmail site

2013-11-16 Thread Caitlyn furness
Are you using pop or imap?

I changed my gmail from imap to pop to fix some irritations I was having and
now I can’t see the all mail folder from apple mail, either.

Of course, in theory, all my messages now get downloaded instead of staying on
gmail’s servers.

Alternately, do you have a folder in your mail called gmail or google? I used
to have one at the very bottom of the list of mailboxes. I then had to expand
this to get to the boxes on the gmail site such as all mail and spam.

Re: how to read braille files without end-of-line markers

2013-11-16 Thread John Sanfilippo
I'm not dead certain of this but this is what may be happening:
I think Apple save Unix text files which means line end with just line feed.
Other OSs save files whose lines end with carriage return and linefeed.

If you want to bother, You might be able to search for carriage returns and
remove them.

I might do it like this:
in text edit
command f
control q, control m
(that is, first press control q, then press control plus m)
The replacement text should be nothing, or tab to it and make sure it is empty.
Then I think command a will press the replace all button.

Of course, you'll have to do this every time you open an MSDos or similar text,
Unless there's a quicker fix I do not know about.

Perhaps saving as some specific text format may work.

Deleting Mail From Gmail site

2013-11-16 Thread Jane
I have Mail on my Mac and iPad and on the GMail server set to iMap. for
some reason, when I tell Mail to delete stuff, it doesn't delete it, it just
holds it. I can see the emails in the deleted items folder--over six thousand
messages, but I don't see how to reliably delete them on Gmail using the Mac.
Does anyone have suggestions?

Jane

Re: My Braille Edge 40 and myApple devices

2013-11-16 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi again
The braille display is a little over a year old. It really makes it complicated
when the hardware is having trouble at the same time updates are happening.
Whoever needs this, but the tiniest terrible. I have a lot of work I have to
get done. I may just have to in Dewar until I have a break in the work.

I thought I would pass along the latest in my experiences. Poor Apple is
just going to love this when they find out the latest because it makes my
 case a little more weird.

The folks at HIMS kept insisting that the Braille Edge 40 would work with
Mavericks. I wasn't sure I agreed, what with the trouble I had been
having. I finally got the Bluetooth connection, which was my trouble to
work, but in a strange fashion. I'll tell you guys about the iPhone in a
minute because that's still a problem for me.

To make the story short, when I chose to add the display, it still came up
with Braille Edge 0011, which HIMS said was correct, although it sounds
strange to me. Ok fine. When I chose to pair, it failed like always. Then
it said Options, and when I chose it, then I got to type in the code. This
time it worked, whereas before it didn't. The only difference is, and this
may explain it, I had done a hard reset on the braille display today,
which I had not done earlier. The weird thing is that I can't pair this
display without it failing first, at least I can't figure out how. I have
never had to let the pairing fail first before being asked for the code.

The iPhone, however, is still a problem. It won't even search for the
braille display, and I have restarted it and given it a hard reset as well
by pressing the power key and the home key together and holding them down
for a few seconds. So I still have a problem, but for now it's a little
better, except the iPhone is worse.

how to read braille files without end-of-line markers

Hello,
I’m trying to read braille files in textedit without seeing the end-of-line

Re: How well is terminal working in Mavericks?

2013-11-16 Thread Garry Turkington
Hi guys,

Thanks for the input. @Peter -- yes, I could run a Debian VM atop OS
X just as I do today on a Windows laptop but that just feels so wrong.
With OS X a Unix-based OS it would be really cool to actually have
first-class access to the console without having to rely on a VM for
heavy command line lifting.

I think I first reported terminal accessibility to Apple back in 2009
so maybe it's time to do so again. :)

 Hi Guys
Somebody on this list said they had trouble with their Braille Edge 40, so
I thought I would pass along the latest in my experiences.

Gigi, signing off and saying that computers sometimes drive you crazy and
make people think you don't know what you're doing

Getting to system dialogs

2013-11-16 Thread Edward Green
Hi,

Is there an easy way to get to an open system dialog? Sometimes Voiceover
reports them as being open, but if I’ve missed them pop up, they don’t appear
to be in the command tab cycle.

Thanks,

Ed
