For my RSS needs, at the moment I’m using shrook. It’s free and pretty accessible once you figure out how to navigate it. Basically, you want to use the keyboard, not VO focus to use it. The interface is kind of like a tree,and has 4 areas you’ll really be using. The first is a table with folders, EG subscriptions, new items, or any onew ones you create. When you hit right arrow, you’ll be on the second table listing all feeds in that folder,a s well as a “all” option at the top. If you go right again, you’ll be on the list of stories in the feed(s). Hit right again and you’ll be placed in an HTML view which has the summary, as well as a “show webpage” button which will let you continue reading with the internal browser. When you’re done with all that, going left moves you back through every element. There’s also an iOS app, which I haven’t tried yet. streaming TV
Question of the day. Ha Ha! I want to be able to stream TV from my Mini. How do I do this? I will say here that my brother downloaded (Can't think of the name of the program but the one that Windows uses most offten for PDF and I think must have Flash) for Apple. So question stands. If I downloaded the incorrect thing because I understood Apple has no Flash, how do I remove the program? Am I making this quite muddy? Have not a clue about my Mini yet so need explicit steps. InstallingApplications not in the Ap Store on Mavericks
Dear List if I try to install an application not in the ap store on mavericks what will happen and what do I have to do. On windows you just start the executable and it brings up a wizard and it is automatically seen as an application. I have heard that you have to move it into the applications folder on a mac but what is the simplest way to do this? In most cases, you just open the disk image in which the new app is by pressing cmd+o twice quickly. From there, you move the app which will have the extension dot a p p to the applications folder. Now, if you are sure you want to open this, and if it has not been registered with Apple, you’d press VO+m to open the short cut menu and from there, choose the open option and follow the dialog from there. Command-c to copy to clipboard, then command-shift-a to move to the apps folder, then command-v to past the app in there. Then go to either your desktop, or use command-shift-c to go to computer, find the disk image, and eject it. Sounds like quite a few steps, but actually only takes a couple of seconds when you are used to it. Not accepting File Format When Importing Into Paprika
Hello Paprika Folks, I need some expert assistance. I copied my recipes that I have collected over the years from my Win 7 PC machine onto a USB thumb drive. I placed the thumb drive into an USB port on my Air, opened Paprika and attemted to import the first recipe file from the drive. I received an error stating that the file type was not recognized by Paprika and couldn't be imported. These files are either DOC or DOCX files. What file types does Paprika like and will import to the app? I didn't think this would matter, but I see that I might have additional work and another folder to add to this thumb drive to import my recipes. Please Advise on how to resolve this. Thanks. Hi Teresa, Funny you should ask this, I just went through this myself a day or two ago. The thing is, the button is there, but best I can tell, it's just not labeled. It's right between the pop-up button to select which device the book is to be sent to and the link that says Enter a promotion code or gift card. It just says button. When you click on the unlabeled button, you will be asked to sign in. Once signed in, you will be able to enter your recipient's information. This is on the Amazon website, by the way. I haven't tried it through the Amazon app as of yet. I’ve been using the old readers website. It is easy to navigate, read mark items, as well as share them. Since I’m using Feeddler Pro on my iPhone with the old reader, everything is in sync. I navigate the old reader’s website with headings item chooser. If one of my feeds has several articles, say over 100, Safari will say busy for a handful of seconds, but it is doable. :) Works the best for me right now. I have it set to the default player. Once voice over says Interact with video playback toolbar item palette, I go to the far right of the window function-VO-right-arrow for my MBA, then VO-space on full screen. I visualize this controller panel as a horizontal line along the bottom. On the left you have volume low, then a slider for volume, then volume high. Next a checkbox for play, exit full screen. Finally on the right side is the total timeline, a slider to move the video forwards or backwards, then the time remaining. This works the best for me. I’m visually impaired so I like the videos in full screen. Keep in mind, for some reason the shortcut command-F will put the video in full screen, but the controls won’t show up. I have taken one of my recipes and have saved it as a DOC, RTF, and ODT file separately and have attempted to import each of these file formats into Paprika only to have the same error message that the import had failed. So, I ask, What am I doing wrong not to be able to import a recipe file into Paprika? Please advise as I would like to take the easy way out to get this accomplished. Otherwise, I will have to resort to the old copy and paste method, which would be more tedious. Thanks in advance. there is a list of supported file types that Paprika will import in the user manual. I just did a search for paprika user manual. I still say for the money MacGourmet is much more flexible and much easier to import recipes into. Hi Eileen and Others, Paprika uses the file extension type to recognize the importing format. You need to use text files and name them with a .yml extension for YAML format before you import. Keywords like name and servings are followed by a colon and a space, then the text argument. For blocks of text, such as a list of ingredients, directions, or notes, use a colon, space, and then a vertical line character (Shift-Backslash or |, where the backslash is the rightmost key below delete and above return on an English language input keyboard). Then, the subsequent lines of text until the next line with a keyword will all be part of the text block associated with that keyword. For the recipe categories keyword argument(s), enclose your categories between left and right square brackets. You can have multiple categories listed, like: categories: [Main Courses, Meat, Thanksgiving] You don't have to use all the available keywords for recipes, and the order you list them also doesn't matter, as long as they follow the name. You could probably just have a name keyword, and then everything else (ingredients, directions, etc.) under a text block for notes and import your recipes. Of course, your recipes would all be uncategorized, and the ingredients and directions wouldn't be separated or appear under the sections for ingredients and directions, but this would be a valid import format. If you plan to import multiple recipes at once within a single file, then the name keyword has to be preceded by a hyphen and a space, so the import process can determine where new recipes start. If you only import a single recipe at a time, it doesn't matter whether you precede the name with a hyphen and a space or not. The easiest way to check this out is to try importing a single text recipe, and then examine the result and determine whether there are changes you want to apply before you import all your recipes. I personally don't like importing these file by file, nor do I find the .yml extension a natural one to use. So the way I handled the import was to start with my recipes as plain text files with the specified format. Then I used the Terminal command line to put all the recipe TXT files in a given folder into a single .yml file that I imported. Linux users will recognize the cat command to concatenate (put together) multiple files into a single file. I perform this in Terminal in the directory that holds a group of my recipe files in TXT format. This is just one way to combine files into a single file that I name recipes1.yml; you don't have to do it this way: cat *.txt recipes1.yml I'll paste in a sample recipe for an example. (Hope the formatting works, because I'm not at my computer, so I'm copying the text from the Mail Archive post I sent to the Mac-Access list a year ago as part of a reply to a question about Paprika vs. MacGourmet, which is a very nice desktop Mac package, but doesn't have the same easy sync and integration with iOS devices. Also, I never found a way to bulk import your own recipes the way you can in Paprika in MacGourmet or any other major recipe manager software -- and I don't mean that you can't copy and paste in recipes one by one in these apps. Certainly you can do that and spend time reformatting each recipe by hand in any of these software applications. You can also batch import your own recipes directly into the iOS version of the app, using the file structure keywords I've described in this post. But every experiment trial you made would involve connecting up your iOS device to your computer, using iTunes file sharing to transfer over the .yml files and then using the import function to check whether you'd gotten things right and the way you want. This just seemed too painful to do at the same time I was trying to learn about the YAML file format. There is a brief description of this format in the section of the Paprika Recipe Manager User Guide on importing recipes. Here's an example of a text recipe I successfully imported into Paprika, in a file that I named recipe.yml. It was an old plain text file that I had from a scan and OCR, and I just added the keyword syntax for fields like name, servings, ingredients, directions, etc. You don't need to have a leading hyphen and space before the name if you're only importing one recipe in the file. In general, key words end with a colon and a space, and text blocks (for ingredients and directions) have a vertical line after the colon and space. VO's reading sounds a bit better if you have complete sentences on each line, but I didn't change the sentence breaks from the way this came out from the scan and OCR when I imported. Incidentally, if I try to import a file with multiple recipes and there's a problem with one of the entries, it will simply fail to import the group. Starting up from the start up button it is also a drawn between Lacie and the internal iMac fusion drive. Time 25 seconds. What is interesting is that it uses the same time at the best also when in Windows desktop, hitting restart and boot back into Windows desktop they uses 25 seconds. Yes, VMWare opened the Virtual Windows when changing connection from usb to thunderbolt. Boot time from the start up button with thunderbolt was about the same as with usb 3.0 From Windows desktop, hitting restart the bot time was from 30-35 seconds. Watched a video on youtube about a macbook pro with Haswell processor had a boot time from start up button on 15 seconds without login screen. Are you thinking about adobe flash player? There's a version of that that's mac-compatible as well, and in some instances just like with Windows, it's a must that you run it and keep it updated, which can be a big inconvenience at times. Hi Jim, I've had MacGourmet (in the Deluxe Version) for some time, and I agree that it's a great program, and was the gold standard for Mac recipe management programs at the time I bought it. There are a lot of things I like about it, including the smart list features. If we were only talking about using recipe programs on our computers, without the wish to have that recipe information and the accompanying shopping lists and meal planning functions reliably available on our iOS devices, then I probably wouldn't be recommending Paprika Recipe Manager as strongly as I do. There is a MacGourmet app for iOS devices, Gourmet (for iOS). (The old version of the app, before the late October 2013 release of the new app,used to be called MacGourmet Touch.) I haven't tried either of these apps, because the reviews have been very mixed about the frequency of crashing (including some instances of wiping out the database) and the reliability of syncing. Apart from the problems of crashing and not reliably syncing, the previous version of the iOS app was only meant to work if you had the MacGourmet App for the Mac, and wanted to access it's contents. In contrast, the Paprika Recipe Manager app lets you add recipes to your recipe database from either your iOS device or your Mac, and sync the information from all devices. The newer Gourmet (for iOS) app is supposed to support recipe entry from either the iOS or Mac end and bi-directional syncing, but it requires that you upgrade to the new version 4 release of MacGourmet that was recently released (I'm still running version 3). Also, the review comments on the performance of the new iOS app for MacGourmet are still mixed. You'll notice that all the criticisms of MacGourmet usage have to do with the availability and reliability of information on iOS devices, and not with the performance of MacGourmet on the Mac, which remains excellent. A number of the new Paprika Recipe Manager users are new Mac users who started using the iOS app. When the Paprika app first started catching on among VoiceOver iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad users over a year and a half ago, it was not possible to use the MacGourmet app unless you also owned the MacGourmet Mac app, and even then you couldn't get reliably synced information for your grocery,lists and meal planning on your iPhone unless you got the Paprika Recipe Manager iPhone app, and imported your MacGourmet recipes. Capslock working as VO Key but not in Fusion?
Hi All. I know this topic has been visited several times but I’ve just set up a new virtual machine with windows and although I followed all the instructions on applevis and I have caps lock working perfectly as the VO keys, but I can’t get it working at all in the virtual machine. Is there anything I need to change in VMWare or JAWS specifically to get this working correctly? JAWS 15 is set it laptop layout. Interestingly, when I have narrator running, pressing caps lock does say insert, but it doesn’t work as it should in JAWS. I know there are plenty who have it working on this list, so any tips, greatly appreciated! Thanks. It does require an update to version 4 but it is half price now and the regular version is normally 24.95. The deluxe version offers menu planning and more which I don't really need. I just think that recipe entry is so much easier with mac gourmet. I guess they are both good but for me the use mac gourmet is so much easier. Hi, Just an update to this. and this is really strange. The left side of my keyboard works fine as JAWS commands, up to H, T and 6. Any keys further right with the caps lock key just ding with the windows sound rather than performing there correct function. Perhaps this will help a bit more. I don't believe it is possible to pass the mac caps lock key through to the virtual machine for Jaws. I think Jaws attempts something low level to intercept/detect that key which breaks the mirage of virtual hardware. Thanks, I’ve seen people discuss it before, but I’ve never seen anything about half the keyboard working. As I said, half the keyboard works and all the numbers with caps lock work E.G. I can open the script manager etc, but I can’t use the JAWS cursor, PCCursor or Route the cursors to each other. I don’t care so much about next and previous word and character and line failing but the cursors are important.
