Re: Any gotchas about Keynote?

2014-01-29 Thread Daniela Rubio
I can say that since the new updates, Keynote is fun and what we, as totally
blind users, can produce, are good presentations. May be we lack a little on
what a sighted person can do, because we can not be aware of where the objects
exactly apear on the slide, but if we leave things as they apear by default,
they look OK. Just try to use clear images when pasting pictures. And if you
bring text from other apps, use Paste with the same stile, so you don't lose
the format of the slide.
An other good advice would be to try not to put too much text on each slide. If
you run from top to bottom by the text and you find that special page changing
tune that VoiceOver uses, try to reduce the amount of text on the slide or make
the character sise a little smaller, because what you find after the tune will
not be visible at a glance of the slide.
Hope it helps!

Overdrive Media Console not behaving as expected

2014-01-29 Thread Edward Green
Hi,

I'm using Overdrive Media Console on the Mac to play a purchased title, and am
not finding that it behaves as I expect.

I thought that command p should toggle play/pause. However, if I press it when
a book is playing, it acts as a play key and starts playback from the beginning
of the book. Also, the resume from furthest point option doesn't seem to work.

Does anyone know if I'm doing something wrong or whether this functionality
isn't supported in the Mac version of Overdrive?

Cheers,

Ed

Re: Creating Recipes In Mac Gourmet Deluxe vs. iOS

2014-01-29 Thread Eileens Misrahi
Hi Jim,

I have read your post a few times while working with a TXT file and Mac Gourmet
Deluxe. Maybe the light bulb hasn't gone off, but the only place I find
"services" is under the "Mac Gourmet" menu. After I click on it, I do not
locate the "clip recipe." I am getting better at the Mac OS, but I am still a
beginner and need more concrete step-by-step directions. Please be patient with
me, as I don't give up easily, but it may take more time for this senior brain
on the uptake of a new program. The iOS version seems to be simple and straight
forward. I don't have problems inputting a recipe on that platform, but my text
files are stored on my Air, so it's logical that I would gravitate to the Mac
version of Mac Gourmet Deluxe. Any further assistance would be much
appreciated.

Thanks in advance, and if need be, please don't hesitate to contact me off list.

Kind regards,
Eileen

Re: A question with Pages exporting to word documents

2014-01-29 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Daniel,

First of all, saves are done automatically, you no longer have to do Cmd-s all
the time.

Pages is not Word. It has its own format, so no, you can't have it
automatically save to Word format, you have to export to Word every time.

Cheers,

Anne

Any gotchas about Keynote?

2014-01-29 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I will soon have to make some power points. Of course, I'll want to buy and
learn Keynote to do this, but are there any accessibility issues or oddities I
need to know about? In past versions of Pages, for instance, you didn't just
open a new document and start writing, you had to find and interact with
different parts to do different things. Also, how does driving a powerpoint
work? I have an iPhone but don't have Keynote for it. Can I still drive the
powerpoint and review the contents/presenter notes on my phone? Should I just
hook headphones up to the Mac doing the presenting instead? Thanks.

using Garabe Band 10 and Apple Loops

Hey there,

I have listened to HTB's podcasts on Garage Band but I am finding it just isn't
working correctly. Does someone have experience copying loops from the loops
browser over to the tracks? I don't even see a loop template. I'll also look
and make sure I have the latest Garage Band. Thanks much.

Huh, weird. If I press it enough times it usually does, but often not before

Re: accessible web browser for iOS that supports flash?

2014-01-29 Thread Christina C.
Thanks! I am aware of the issues/controversies with flash and that most are
moving to HTML5. I can't wait until all websites do this though. Unfortunately
this particular website has not switched over yet and are in the process but
they do not know how long it will take them to complete the transition from
flash to HTML5. :) This website is a place where my children do schoolwork.
It's actual school curriculum. I often need to help them but I need to be able
to read the text of the material they are trying to learn. I don't need to be
able to perform any of the actual onscreen work. They have to answer questions,
matching, dragging and dropping, and watching videos. I hope that makes sense.
I am able to access the text on my mac with Safari but I cannot make it work
on the iPad because the iPad does not support flash. I need to use the iPad to
read the text while my children are on the computer.

I will give Photon a whirl.

Thanks so much,
Christina

Re: podcast question

2014-01-29 Thread Sean Paul
Yes, Youtube does not generate an RSS feed & will not allow you to download
videos. There is a work around for this... But, much to complacated to get
in to here. &, involves the use of google hangouts on air. If you're just
wanting to post the youtube videos on your site, you can do that by
imbedding them in your posts. Simply by taking the direct link from the
video & imbedding it when you write your post. Wordpress will then generate
a video player with them. There are also other wordpress plugins which will
generate much nicer youtube players... This will only give your end users
the ability to watch the video on your site & not do anything else with it.
If you're wanting the ability for others to download them or get them in a
podcatcher, yes, you will need to reupload the post. & use powerpress.
Again, this will require some media hosting as you are not able to take that
video from Youtube. Really need to figure out exactly what you're wanting to
do with them here. Powerpress is very accessible, you will need to get in to
its guts & make some setting changes. Probably drifting way off topic for
this list now. So, probably be a good idea to contact me off list for
further podcasting type questions & I'll be more than glad to walk with you
in the set up process. I do not, nor have I ever done video podcasting, but,
I'm well versed in audio podcasting. By using powerpress it's vertually the
same whether you're doing video or audio.

Re: Mud client for OSX 10.9?

2014-01-29 Thread Mike Arrigo
I think an app called IMud is in development, but so far as not
appeared on the app store, Apple is quite picky about what apps are
permitted, so hard to say what is going on there.

Original message:
I'm a new Mac user who got a MacBook air yesterday. Are there any good
mud clients with sound support for OSX? I'm planning on installing
Windows 8.1 at some point so can hopefully go the VMWare fusion route
to run VIP mud as an app along side the rest of OSX but would prefer a
native OSX client if possible.

The way you can make voiceover read all the text is to do a two fingr swipe

Re: A question with Pages exporting to word documents

2014-01-29 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi Tim and Justin, many thanks for your answers.
Tim, I did as you suggested and low and behold the extension did change to
.dock

I now have one more related question.

When I changed the extension and saved it into .docx I assumed that now this
was done, the file was saved and all I would need to do would be to keep
issuing the Command S keystroke now and then to continue saving any changes in
the document.
As soon as I did this though, it popd up a dialog box asking if I wanted to
save the file again.
So this time I saved the extension to a .pages format. Opened it up again
issued CMD S to save it after just typing some random words in the doc again
and it saved it without any dialog box asking if I wanted to save it again.
Question is, is there a way I can start a word project in pages but have the
file always save in a word format.
Personally and this is my own opinion it seems a bit of a pain having to export
to word all the time. What if one was at college/university and was continually
making changes to a document at regular intervals. I hope you can all see where
I am going with this. One would end up with a lot of files. Rather than one doc
being saved over and over again much more easier to manage than having to mess
about finding the exported dock file.
For those who use the word processor, how do you deal with this sort of
situation?
Before, I was using the word processor Bean but now the new pages is out, I
would like to give it the benefit of a doubt and if anyone can give tips on how
they handle there word document organization withe the new pages and
maintaining a document in the word format that would be really appreciated.

Re: podcast question

2014-01-29 Thread Sean Paul
You are not able to send Youtube videos to iTunes, iTunes does not house
audio or video podcasts. iTunes is just a search reposatory for podcasts &
will take an RSS feed. It will then check the RSS feed frequently for new &
updated content. You are not able to download Youtube videos. I'd suggest
that you get a media host such as Libsyn or Blubrry for media hosting. These
services will then give you an RSS feed which you are then able to submit to
iTunes. You may also use the powerpress plugin if you're a wordpress user,
then upload your content to archive.org, grab the imbed link from them,
paste that in to powerpress then submit a RSS feed from your wordpress site
to iTunes. Yes, allot of information presented here, I know. In closing,
keep in mind that your web hosting & media hosting are 2 different animals.
Most web hosting will not allow you to send streamed content from them
reguardless of what some may tell you... Have to read the fine print on
them...

Re: A question with Pages exporting to word documents

2014-01-29 Thread Andrew Lamanche

Daniel,

I've found a work around this issue. When you vo+right arrow through the
"unknown" field, stop on each one and then route your mouse to Voiceover
cursor with Vo+command+f5 and then Voiceover will read the label of the
unknown field. This is weird but it works. Not ideal but try it.

Hi,

There’s always OS X Server. Probably a little overkill if all you are looking
for is an FTP server but for $20 in the AppStore, you have an FTP server and
much more, and accessible too.

That issue is fixed in the newest version of pages. In fact the export option

Hi,

These are still "Unknowns", but it doesn't matter. Do the same as what you've
been doing but after going to the sub-menu and choosing Word, just press return
twice and you'll be brought to the Save dialog. Alternatively, if you
accidentally went to pdf instead of Word, just Interact with the second of the
Unknowns, VO should announce "Word", then press return and you're again at the
Save dialog.

Re: Mavericks clean install question

2014-01-29 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Just a note regarding this. If you plan on migrating everything back from your
Time Machine backup, then it is unnecessary to do the clean install. When you
install Mavericks, then migrate from the Time Machine backup, then it will
bring all settings, apps and files over so that your Mac is the same as it was
prior to the install, but now with Mavericks. Installing Mavericks over top of
your Mountain Lion does exactly the same thing, with less steps. If you really
want the clean install to be a true clean install, you can't include the
restore from Time Machine backup in your process. It's OK to copy files and
such, but it's better to re-install each app either from the AppStore or its
installer in order to make the clean install proper.

A question with Pages exporting to word documents

2014-01-29 Thread Daniel McGee
Hi all,
with the recent update to pages, I wanted to know, for those who have updated
to the latest version, which I myself haven't done so yet, if the export dialog
box now been correctly labeled with Voiceover?

You see, After I have chosen export which can be found under the file menu
under the app I then arrow right and down to hit enter on word. I navigate
through the dialog box that comes up but all the items are "unknown." As
Voiceover puts it.

If this is still the case in the new pages update, then if someone here could
provide instructions on how one can save a document using pages into the word
format, I would be most grateful.

Thanking you all

Daniel

I currently have a macbook pro running ML and have 2 time machine backups, 1
external drive and 1 network drive. I'm getting ready to do a clean install to
Mavericks and plan restoring from the time capsule backup. I was wondering if
I would have trouble connecting the external drive backup once i've restored

the old backup.
Does anyone know the answer to this?

Re: Creating Recipes In Mac Gourmet Deluxe vs. iOS

2014-01-29 Thread Jim Gatteys
It is very easy to get recipes into Mac Gourmet Deluxe. If you have a text
file you can select the text you want to import and then find clip recipe under
services. You can define a keystroke to do this to make it quicker. Then Mac
Gourmet will put it into the clippings section and it easy from there. You
have various fields like name, ingredients, directions and more. You highlight
the ingredients and press command-5 for ingredients and command-6 for
directions. There is a very clear explanation of this in the user manual.
Hope this clears up some of the confusion.

Mud client for OSX 10.9?

I'm a new Mac user who got a MacBook air yesterday. Are there any good mud
clients with sound support for OSX? I'm planning on installing Windows 8.1
at some point so can hopefully go the VMWare fusion route to run VIP mud as
an app along side the rest of OSX but would prefer a native OSX client if
possible.

Re: accessible web browser for iOS that supports flash?

2014-01-29 Thread Erik Heil
 hELLO,
i'M NOT SURE WHETHER THIS ACTUALLY ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION DIRECTLY, BUT WHAT
EXACTLY DO YOU WAHT TO ACCOMPLISH WITH THE fLASH CONTENT? aRE OU TRYING TO
INTERACT WITH A fLASH-BASED APPLICATION? Play video? The reason why I bring
this up is that when it comes to ahdio and video content, a lot of Web
sites are moving to HTML5-based audio and video tools. So, Flash is not as
nearly used as it once was. Sok in short, please let us know what actly you
are trying to accomplish with Flash. As far as a native Flash playwer,
that's not going to happen at all. First of all, Adobe has decided to focus
all of its efforts in respect to mobile content nto HTML5 authoring tools.
Next, Apple has stated publically that they will not allow Flash content on
their devices. Even the late Steve Jobs in an open letter layed out the
reasons why Flash is a bad idea. I'm not at all trying to start a flame
war on this topic, but figured that I would try and at least try and answer
your question here. Maybe their are alternaties to waht you want o
accomplish that you can use on your iPad? Just some food for thought. I
hope this helpsl at least a little.
