tip: reading 'mastering the macintosh with vo' ON THE MAC

2014-08-09 Thread Anouk Radix
Hi everyone,
I am not sure about the legalities of this but since ibooks on the mac is
rather inaccessible with a braille display and even though you can use a
braille display on ios it just does not feel as comfortable as reading braille
on a mac to me.
So, i got this tip from an acquaintance of mine and thought i would share.
Since this is a free and apparently unprotected ibook (this does not
neccessarily go hand in hand, some paid ibooks are protected others are not).
It is actually possi ble to read the ibook on the mac with safari. Epub
apparently is just a container, at least the text of the ibook is some kind of
html.
to do this:
- imho its easiest to download the book on ios, make sure to open it as well on
that device.
- then open ibooks on the mac, it will ask you for your apple id so it can sync
with icloud
- open the book on the mac once as well.
- then go to the finder and use the go to folder commando (cmd+shift+g) and
paste the following path
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books
this is the folder where apple stores the ibooks that you have downloaded onto
your mac.
The books are given a random number, in my case since the book was the last one
i added it was easy to find just by looking at the date modified column.
- go to that folder and then to the underlying ops folder. Here you will find
the chapter files.
Its perhaps a good idea to copy the whole book to a different folder so that it
will be easier to find in future.

thanks for the tip.

Just curious, what sorts of problems are you having trying to read in ibooks
with braille? I've been doing it for about a week now and don't see a problem?

2014-08-09 Thread Anouk Radix
Hi, my problem is that i only seem to be able to do it by using the item
chooser and even that stops at a certain point.
If i try to read it normally then i cant get to the next page or chapter. Also
i could never seem to figure out how to use the table of contents to navigate
to a spot directly.
Admittedly it has been a few months since i tried this though.

Re: Moving Columns in Numbers

2014-08-09 Thread Phil Halton
how about that! That's strange and makes very little sense to me. It kind of
undercuts the whole concept of relative and absolute addressing, and implies
that numbers is correcting for the addressing depending on the method of moving
involved.
Oh well, good to know, thanks.

in reading Tim Sniffen's book on mastering the Mac, I came across the term
Loc dots, which evidently are unobtrusive tactile markers that can be placed
on the keyboard to augment the tiny markers on the F and J keys.

Currently I use the tinniest bump dots I can find and they still are pretty
big, and probably put pressure on the closed screen of my MBA. If there's a
better option, such as these loc dots, I'd like to try them out.
Does anyone know what these actually are, and where they can be had?

Re: tip: reading 'mastering the macintosh with vo' ON THE MAC

2014-08-09 Thread Caitlyn Furness
Ah, OK.

Well, to get to the next chapter, I have made my own shortcut, control n.
Control p is for previous chapter. You can set these up in keyboard in the
system prefs. The given shortcut for next chapter in i books doesn't seem to
work for me, it's supposed to be command shift right arrow, but all that does
is highlight the current line here. that's why I made my own shortcuts.
For me, after I hit control n, I have to stop intereacting with the current
chapter and then vo right arrow to the next one, then interact again.

The table of contents doesn't stay on the screen long enough to actually
navigate to things. As soon as you try to move the vo cursor up or down to
read the contents, it goes away, so this is useless for me.

I have sent email to accessibility at apple to make them aware of these things..
hth,
Cait

I have mailed aple accessibility as well.
These things should just work imho without you having to make your own

 Hi everyone,
I am not sure about the legalities of this but since ibooks on the mac is
rather inaccessible with a braille display and even though you can use a
braille display on ios it just does not feel as comfortable as reading
braille on a mac to me.
So, i got this tip from an acquaintance of mine and thought i would share.
Since this is a free and apparently unprotected ibook (this does not
neccessarily go hand in hand, some paid ibooks are protected others are
 not).
It is actually possi ble to read the ibook on the mac with safari. Epub
apparently is just a container, at least the text of the ibook is some
 kind of html.
 to do this:
 - imho its easiest to download the book on ios, make sure to open it as
 well on that device.
 - then open ibooks on the mac, it will ask you for your apple id so it can
 sync with icloud
 - open the book on the mac once as well.
 - then go to the finder and use the go to folder commando (cmd+shift+g)
 and paste the following path
 ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.BKAgentService/Data/Documents/iBooks/Books
this is the folder where apple stores the ibooks that you have downloaded
 onto your mac.
The books are given a random number, in my case since the book was the
last one i added it was easy to find just by looking at the date modified
 column.
 - go to that folder and then to the underlying ops folder. Here you will
 find the chapter files.
Its perhaps a good idea to copy the whole book to a different folder so
that it will be easier to find in future.

 Greetings, Anouk,

Re: Moving Columns in Numbers

2014-08-09 Thread Barry Hadder
Hey Nicholas.

Glad you were able to make that work. I knew you would if you stuck with it.
That's just what it takes some times, and on OS X you can get rewarded for it
more often than not.
I didn't feel I was able to help much more than throw out a bunch of
suggestions, but it sounds like the layout theory had Marit. I'm glad that
something I said was useful. Sometimes telling someone who to do something
isn't enough. You wouldn't have ever learned how to do this if you hadn't
figured it out for yourself.

Hi Barry,

I finally got it to work. Thanks, Barry, for your help and patients! First of
all I got it to work in a different spreadsheet, after first rearranging the
tables and ensuring none of the tables were overlapping. Then I tried it in the
original spreadsheet I was working with. At first I was having the same issue,
but then after some tinkering I got it to work. I never managed to move column
G where I wanted to, but managed to move columns E and F to the right of column
G and achieved the same effect.

For anyone who may be interested, these are the things I tinkered with, any or
all of them may have been necessary:
moving the position of the table in the arrange tab of the format inspector;
showing the table name
exiting full screen;
moving the window to the front and hiding all others;
moving other columns to the right of the target column rather than the target
column to the left of the other columns;
trying multiple times.

They are stored in ~/library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist. A few other files seem to
be there as well, like download information.
