Re: quality of osx with voiceover for people with dissablities
David and all, I agree with your approach. As a user of technology for over 30 years now. There is no one solution. If you lock yourself into one solution, then you will find down the track at some time your lack of knowledge and expertise has left you behind requiring a major re-learning. Is the Mac platform without problems? No. Is it apples fault or the vendors fault. Both. If the product has lack of accessibility and comes from the Vendor like Microsoft. Then the issue lies in their court. But if there is features that could make your life easier on the Mac platform then that lies in apples court. Some areas of improvement I would like to see and have send to accessi...@apple.com mailto:accessi...@apple.com are: Improved access to terminal. As yet, you cannot move to the beginning of a line in Terminal. You can go to the top of the window, to the first line of the visible text, but not to the beginning of the line you are reviewing with VO. This feature would be very useful when reviewing information in any program. The challenge with bugs that are reported is how Apple rank them to be fixed. I do not know how much weighting they give to Voice-Over style bugs. The other challenge is the period between fixes. If a bug is reported and verified on the Mac Platform. It could take years before it is fixed. While bugs on Windows screen readers do take a lot shorter period of time to get fix. some bugs on both platforms never get fixed because they might not be able to validate the bug, to complex, breaks to many other features, Product management slates more important features to be address and the poor old developer hasn’t got time to address the bug, etc. this is the nature of the beast when using a major main stream vendor vs small vendors. Normally small vendors are faster to respond to issues then larger because of their internal processes and competing other priorities in the organisation. On the iPhone I will admit 8.xx version of iOS is the worst release I have seen from Apple. crashes of Voice-Over, Voice-over being stuck on elements within Audible and other programs, Voice-over not responding to taps, When swiping through a app VO jus to different areas of the app, not the next item and so on. Everything I have outlined here has not been seen in 7.xx and it is just to much hassle to role back. I have reported some of the issues I have found and the response from apple was not very encouraging. EG: We have forwarded your issue on to the product owner. That means nothing and far as I am concern they have passed on the buck to someone else and the issue has gone into a black hole. Their customer management could improve greatly. Then I am a customer of them and a small one at that. Thus if I walk, it doesn’t hurt them. this is the problem when a company is the favour of the year and is growing like apple. Microsoft and other large companies when they were on the up swing of market growth went through the same problems. So it isn’t anything new what I have outlined. Sean On 13 Feb 2015, at 11:31 am, David Griffith daj.griff...@gmail.com wrote: I too must confess that I am not a braille user on the Mac so cannot comment on how frustrating this is. however there do seem to be a lot of people using Braille happily on the MacVisionaries list so perhaps there is some expertise you can tap into there to get support. Apart from that I agree with all Barry has said. I also agree that there are areas that the experience on the Mac can improve but equally I could compile a much longer list of complaints / disappointments with Windows and the various Screenreaders and Windows OS problems. . . Only today I was experiencing the frustration of Jaw’s inability to accurately copy and paste text to and from ,html content. This is a long standing annoyance at what should be a basic function which has existed for me since Jaws 14 and shows no sign of being resolved in 16. I can work around it by using NVDA but this and other deficiencies definitely exist on Windows. I still prefer the Mac overwhelmingly for many functions, including web browsing. The Mac also provides for free a voice dictation and command interface which forme personally outperforms anything I have bought on the Windows platform, including Dragon Naturally Speaking. I agree that there is a problem with the implementation of advance Office support on the Mac. However this is to a large extent about the lack of depth in the compilation of strategies compared to the information, tutorials and guides available on the Windows side. Apple has relatively little interest in promoting Microsoft Office and will pay lip service only to supporting this format in many cases. This is understandable given the competing nature of their suites. Hopefully there is a lot to look forward to when the allegedly fully Voiceover accessible version of Microsoft

Apple Script to mount networked drive
Hi, Here is a apple script to mount a network drive. using the script editor, export as app instead of script. tell application Finder try mount volume smb://193.169.0.6 end try end tell replace the IP address with the IP of your drive. Thanks, Rob Sent from my MacBook On Feb 13, 2015, at 8:25 PM, Barry Hadder bhad...@gmail.com wrote: Yeah I see that now. In the get specified server, just enter the server url. Then save it as an app. I’ve tried it and it connects and mounts at login without the finder window opening. There is another way as well which involves editing the /etc/fstab file, but I’m not sure off the top of my head how to create an entry for a network drive. I should add that if you want to try to go that root, you only edit fstab using vifs. And, there is yet another way using launchctl, but I’m not going to try to tell you how to do that either it as I don’t actually have a nas. I’m just using an ftp server for testing. You would want to use something like mount_afp or mount_smbfs. You can look at the man page and play around with it. The automator app is probably the easiest option though. Re: some pages commands?
Hello Zoe, The editing commands in Pages are exactly the same as elsewhere on the Mac. Cmd-Up Arrow goes to the top of the document and Cmd-Down Arrow goes to the bottom. Add the shift key to navigation commands to select the text. There’s one major bug in Pages when it comes to editing, and that is that you can’t select text across a page boundary. Re: How do I mount networked drive?
Hello, I have found that the most effective way of mounting a network drive (NAS) to a computer is by accomplishing this through the connect to server feature. This can be accessed through CMD-K. Before accessing this feature you will need to have your IP address for the network drive in question, and the username and password as the login credentials. If you try and retrieve these while the server window is open it will cancel-out your server request. Thus, by having the aforementioned items in-hand, you can type these into the correct fields, and your drive should connect without error. Therefore, when you access the server window, you will need to type smb://ip address of network drive, then insert your username and password where appropriate. Re: Reading a PDF in Preview
Hi Esther, it's great to see you posting to the list again and sharing all your knowledge. When I was writing Tweeting Blind, I decided it was a good opportunity as a reasonably new Mac user to go full emersion and do all my writing in OS X. I had the time, and it was an excellent way of further developing my Mac muscle memory. I did indeed use Nisus, but I found quite a few compatibility issues when others, or when I in Windows, opened the file in Word, which is the industry standard. I also found very quickly that VO just doesn't give me as much information as a writer than JAWS does under Windows. And a third-party publisher I use for getting material into the iBooks Store requires a Word document formatted a very specific way which I was able to speed up with the help of a Word template. So after that experiment, I went back to writing all my books in Microsoft Word with JAWS and Windows. One of the things I really do appreciate is having VMWare Fusion. We face so many challenges as blind people that I think we need to use whatever tool we believe will allow us to get a specific task completed with the greatest efficiency, ease and productivity. So when it comes to writing, application of formatting and editing, for me at least, nothing comes close to Word and JAWS at this time. I appreciate that everyone's needs and requirements are different, and Nisus is an excellent and largely accessible product. It's been a while since I used it but I think Anne may be correct about tables. Re: WhisperSync for Voice.
Thanks for all the explanations. I did buy a kindle book, and when I look in the information for this book, it says it is whisper sink ready. However, the Audible version is not available in the audio Audible Store. So, if it is Whispa sink ready, does that still mean that the human Narration is going to be available? On 13 Feb 2015, at 7:26 pm, Jane juanitatig...@gmail.com wrote: Hi. I have tried using that with my Braille display and it works great! I can read in Braille until I get tired, then I can switch to audio right there in the app with no problems. When I want Braille again, I can switch back just as easily and the display will be where the Audible audio stopped. Jane On Feb 13, 2015, at 2:08 PM, Alan Lemly wale...@gmail.com wrote: I'll add to Myrna's comments below that WhisperSync is designed to allow sighted users who start reading a book visually to be able to move to their cars and take up at the same location in the Audible book with spoken narration. I imagine that this is where the Sync in the name originates. I expect this would also work if you're reading the Kindle version of the book with TTS in the Kindle app or reader although I have not tested this. I will say that one book I wanted to read was less expensive to get the Kindle version, add the Audible WhisperSync than what it would have cost to use one of my Audible credits. But I don't expect this will occur very often. Hi, WhisperSync refers to the Audible version of the book. So, if you purchase a Kindle eBook, and then you choose to purchase what they are calling WhisperSync, you would be purchasing the Audible version of the book. What you then have is an audio book, read by a human narrator, in the Audible format. You can play the Audible version in the Audible app on an I Device, or if you have an audiobook player, such as the Victor Reader Stream, the book can be played on such a player. If you have a Kindle, there is a built-in Audible app on it, as well. Myrna On Feb 11, 2015, at 5:17 PM, Kawal Gucukoglu kgli...@icloud.com wrote: Hello All. Word Processing Options, (was Reading a PDF in Preview)
Hi Angus, I have started to use it to just write, then I bring in the file into desktop word for serious formatting and editing. I wouldn't like to do the process from beginning to end on iOS but it's pretty cool during the writing stage. I actually very much like Voice Dream Writer in IOS. The only trouble is that once you've exported what you've created to Word, it won't import a Word document. Maybe a future version. Re: creating a list of what's on your drive
Hello, A program that I have used with great success is List Export. This can be purchases on the Mac App Store for a few follars, and is worth the cost for list creation. All one does is simply highlight the folder in question, select the output tyle, which Excell will be the only option, then accept the settings. In a few minutes (depending on the folder size) an output file will be placed into the location you specify. Below is a link to the Mac App Store where further investigation can help determine if this is a program ideal for your needs - enjoy. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/file-list-export/id852692251?mt=12 Hope this has been helpful :) -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups MacVisionaries group. Re: Searching hashtags on Yorufukuru/Nightowl
You have to make sure you are in your Search tab. Command-right until you get there. It will be empty and when you press command-f it will say Twitter Search, not just search. Use vo-f2 to work out which tab you are in if that helps, and when you find it, remember how many across it is. Remember that control-1 gets you to home, control-2 to mentions and so on, for the first 9 tabs, if you have that many. Cheers, Anne On 14 Feb 2015, at 00:56, Esther mori...@mac.com wrote: Hi Gigi, Nisus Writer Pro is a word processing app. You can think of it as an alternative to Pages, and some people prefer it and/or find it a bit more intuitive to use than Pages. You can read the MacWorld Review. (Both web reviews I give below can be read in Safari Reader using the cmd-shift-r shortcut): http://www.macworld.com/article/2157004/tools-of-the-trade-why-i-prefer-nisus-writer.html There was an even longer one when version 2 of Nisus Writer Pro was first released that appeared in TidBITS back in 2011: http://tidbits.com/article/12220 The upshot was that author of these articles prefered Nisus Writer Pro to either Pages or Word, and the staff of the Take Control eBooks have converted over to using this Mac app as their default word processor. I believe that Jonathan Mosen used this app to write his recent books. I find creating or converting to ePub more intuitive (for me), than with Pages, but new Mac users might prefer to stick with Pages. People who like Smart folders, mailboxes, playlists, etc. and linux/unix users who use general regular expressions for pattern searching will also like the way Nisus Writer supports features for searching for and working with these kinds of patterns in text, but that's just a bonus. (It's the sort of searches that make people like the Nebulous Notes app on the iPhone.) In your case, you're not going to need this in lieu of PDFPenPro for PDF reading. But then, PDFPenPro is also much more expensive than Nisus Writer Pro, and does other things related to OCR and PDF editing.
