RE: Choosing a Mac, getting started

I’ve never had any luck converting iworks files to Office files unless they are
saved in an RTF format or txt

But yes it could be done if need be.

I still prefer by choice to use office on a windows machine but pages numbers
and keynote are there and very useable

Are you saying you can do everything you need to with Apple's iWorksSuite? If
so, I presume you could do that, and simply convert your necessary
documents/files from Apple's iWorksSuite to its equivalent MicrosoftOfficeSuite
if you catch my drift

I recently joined this group and would like to learn more about using
the Mac and its accessibility. I am considering buying a Mac, and have
been exploring some different models. I would appreciate any input
anyone may have before I buy one.

My main purposes right now for using the mac would be for learning how
the OS works, using web browsing, email, word processing, listening to
audio files, and trying some audio editing. I'd also like to try Apple
Script, Python, and maybe the new Swift programming language. Does
VoiceOver work well in the terminal?

I would also like to have the option to run Windows as a virtual
machine, and am considering whether to get 8 GB of RAM or go with 4.

Recently when working on my resume, I found it helpful that my Windows
screen reader was able to tell me the horizontal and vertical position
of the cursor so that I could tell how far down on the page the text
was, and make sure text was lined up horizontally. Does VoiceOver offer
this kind of feedback in either Pages or Microsoft Office?

I'm mainly considering the Mac Mini, Macbook Air, or Macbook. From
reading Apple's OS X requirements, many 2012 or newer models of the Mac
Mini are supported. If I go with a Macbook Air or Macbook, I may go for
a newer machine to maximize its battery life since the battery isn't
easily replaceable. Would I be ok with getting a Mac Mini from 2012 or
newer if I decide to go with one of those, instead of buying the latest
model, or are there any drawbacks from an accessibility standpoint?

How valuable is it to have a numeric pad? I understand VoiceOver has a
numpad commander that can be used to assign keyboard commands. Would it
be worth considering an external Apple keyboard with a numeric pad if I
buy a laptop without one? How about a trackpad, if I choose a Mac Mini
without one built in?

There is an option under users and groups with system preferences that will

Hi all,
I've just purchased a second hand mac.
I've not used one before Friday so am a total beginner.

It is running OS10 but not the latest.
When my mac starts I have to put in a password.
This screen doesn't speak.
Now when I start the mac it seems to load but when i type my password and press
enter I get the error sound.
I can get sighted assistance to get past this and get it talking to go in and
uncheck the box to ask for password on startup.
Is there a way to get past this point without sighted assistance?

Really disgusted with iBooks this evening

2016-01-02 Thread Mary Otten
Hello all,
Today, I purchased two cookbooks in the iBooks store. I could have purchased
them on Kindle, but because I have generally had better luck navigating the
specifics of a book and iBooks, I spent my money there. Neither book is
readable on my iPad or my iPhone. After I get rid of the ridiculous
non-friendly view in table of contents by changing it to a list of you, and
double tap on the chapter I want to read, I don't get anything intelligible. I
get random letters and voiceover saying "background image" background image"
background image" ad infinitum. It has been a while since I have purchased a
cookbook. And if this is how they're all going to be, it's going to be a lot
longer before I waste anymore money on Apple's books. Have others had similar
problems? I wrote Apple accessibility. And I suppose they're probably going to
send me off to some damned link that will have six other links that I will have
to follow and eventually get nowhere, which is what happened to me the last
time they sent me on a wild goose chase after an iTunes problem. I hope not,
since this is clearly an excess ability problem, so they ought to go to bat and
number one, figure out what causes it and fix it and also help out with
refunds. But I really am curious if others are having this problem.

Hi. I have to correct you about something. iWork only comes free on Macs that
were purchased in 2012 or later. If you bought your Mac in 2010 like I did or
2011, you still have to buy each program in the iWork suite.

 Hi all,
I've just purchased a second hand mac.
I've not used one before Friday so am a total beginner.

It is running OS10 but not the latest.
When my mac starts I have to put in a password.
 This screen doesn't speak.
Now when I start the mac it seems to load but when i type my password and
press enter I get the error sound.
I can get sighted assistance to get past this and get it talking to go in
and uncheck the box to ask for password on startup.
Is there a way to get past this point without sighted assistance?

1.

Open system preferences.

2. Tab or get to the table of preferences options. fastest way is to tab
there. Then, press U for users and groups. Press space here.

3. Now, just to the right of the tool bar, you will notice five groups of
options which you should interact with. Within this group, you want to select
log in options.

4. Now, at this point, most of the chages you make here will need your
administrative access password because you need to unlock the security for
these items. Within this group, you will note a check box which says "use
Voice OVer at log in" By default, this box will be unchecked. You cannot
check it until you unlock the administrative security which allows this change.
To unlock it, VO right all the way over and you'll notice an item which says,
"click the lock to make changes" Do this, and you will be prompted for your
Mac administrative password. Enter it, and press return. Now, you can check
to use Voice OVer at log in. Once you are done here, you most likely will want
to click on the lock to prevent further changes.

HTH.

Does anyone here know what needs to be set on a new MacBook Air so that VO will
come up automatically when the system is booted up? I have no problem turning
VO on once it boots up, but , even though I have VO running when I shut down
the computer, it does not boot up automatically.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Hmm,

I don’t think the situation you posed is possible actually. Your watch can
only be paired to one IOS device at a time. And to my knowledge, that device
has to be an iPhone. So your watch can only control music being played from
the phone witch it is paired.

Hi all,
I've just purchased a second hand mac.

Re: apple watch weirdness with bluetooth

2016-01-02 Thread David Chittenden
My partner has never had that happen between her Apple Watch and her car's
bluetooth with phone calls. She also has no difficulties between her Apple
Watch and her bluetooth earpiece. Then again, her iPhone does the heavy
lifting. In other words, whilst her iPhone is near, it handles the BlueTooth
routing.

Re: apple watch weirdness with bluetooth

2016-01-02 Thread Ricardo Walker
To me too.

When I was on the phone with Apple, the person had this attitude like, why
would anyone want to do what your asking? They didn’t say that but, just by
their tone. I’m like, ok. You have the ability to put music on your watch. So
if your listening to music, jogging, cycling, etc, a calls come in, you gotta
fish your iPhone out some pocket or bag if you would like a little privacy? And
Keep in mind, you have headphones on already. Gotta take those off to have any
hope of hearing the speaker on your watch. lol.

Is it a deal breaker for me? No. Mainly because my Sennheiser's support
multiple device pairing. But it does speak to managing Expectations.

In my research on this topic, people were very annoyed that they would pair the
watch to bluetooth in their vehicles, receive a call and instead of hearing it
over the cars stereo, its playing on their wrist.

Re: Apple watch and multiple devices.

2016-01-02 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hmm,

I don’t think the situation you posed is possible actually. Your watch can only
be paired to one IOS device at a time. And to my knowledge, that device has to
be an iPhone. So your watch can only control music being played from the phone
witch it is paired.

Re: getting speech back on macBook air?

2016-01-02 Thread Bill Dengler
Yes.
You can press command+f5 at the login screen to start VoiceOver.
Additionally, once logged in, you can enable speech on this screen in the
future:
Press CTRL+option+m to bring up the menu bar.
Down arrow until you reach system preferences, and then press enter.
When system preferences opens, interact with the preference panes scroll area,
then type “user”.
Press VO+space to click the button.
Interact with the users, groups and login options list.
VO+right until you land on the login options group, then stop interacting.
Click the button labeled "Click the lock to make changes.” and enter your
password.
If you authenticate successfully, you will hear the sound of a lock opening.
Navigate to the checkbox labeled “Use VoiceOver in the login window” and press
VO+space to check it.
There are other options in here you may want to customize, for example I use a
name/password prompt on the login screen instead of the user selector.
If you need special input methods for login (i.e. alternative keyboard layouts
or accented etc characters in foreign language passwords), you can enable that
as well from here.
Press CMD+q to quit system preferences.

getting speech back on macBook air?

2016-01-02 Thread Adam Morris

Hi all,
I've just purchased a second hand mac.
I've not used one before Friday so am a total beginner.

It is running OS10 but not the latest.
When my mac starts I have to put in a password.
This screen doesn't speak.
Now when I start the mac it seems to load but when i type my password
and press enter I get the error sound.
I can get sighted assistance to get past this and get it talking to go
in and_uncheck the box to ask for password on startup.

Is there a way to get past this point without sighted assistance?

Hi!
I don’t have one yet.
I have just heard that they should work with the mac.
Now i have a blista brailletech which was great using windows but their support
refuses to create drivers for the mac for some reason.
I guess its because the printer itself installs a virtual com port under
windows.
Its an ftdi device and i have not had any luck installing such to the mac.

Re: radio and iPhone 5S

2016-01-02 Thread Scott Granados
So here’s an interesting angle on the FM side of this discussion. I was
thinking about the classic argument that FM is available in more places than
the Internet.

I don’t think that’s true. I’ve been doing comparisons in my mind and I think
the Internet believe it or not is now more readily available than traditional
broadcasting. (we’ll leave exotic radio, hams and other esoteric stuff out of
this discussion as I’m thinking more mainstream user here). I can get the
internet deep with in the glass and brick monstrosities and in many cases over
a fast network with good handoff. No dice at all on AM and FM only if there’s
no digital electronics around with clocks (not likely).
More than 100 miles off shore, Cell signals do propagate out that far,
I have tested this personally. Even T-Mobile has the waters off the east and
west coast covered and Verizon is unbelievably good off shore. FM can carry
well over water when conditions are good but when they get weird with ice
crystals and such reflecting signals it can be difficult. Out past a couple
hundred miles all terrestrial signals that are VHF or higher thin out but you
have some satellite options that are pretty affordable now. Cruze ships also
have WiFi, all modern Navy ships have Internet, large transports, motor yachts
and so forth. I spend a lot of time out on the water and Internet is plentiful.
I can get Internet in space, the space station has Internet including
Skype, pandora and some other services. I’m not sure about video and some
googling would probably yield how much bandwidth they have up there, I bet it’s
pretty good.
Aircraft are all Internet enabled at least commercial grade and higher
end personal. I think I could grab an internet station and listen to the same
station anywhere in the world (political network disruptions aside).

So I’m with you, the converged network is the best. The emergency problem is a
real problem. I’m a ham so I get it. I have to honestly say I am concerned
that amateur radio will not go that much further in our present path and I do
not think this is necessarily a good thing. Just as I do not support sending
IP over power lines that are uninsulated and completely obliterates the HF
bands to the point of being unusable. But how do we get services to people
reliably when all hell breaks loose. Wireless mesh has to be where it is. I
do not want some corporate owned mesh though that I have to go to a carrier to
deal with exclusively. I don’t mind big blocks of spectrum used for commercial
grade services but If we really are going to make this full digital transition,
away from everything analog I want a damn decent sized block of that spectrum
reserved for individuals. Some sort of open source mesh that we all can
participate in and our act of participation enhances the mesh by adding higher
density. Even space for the experimenter, keep the same ham type
classification but make everything digital / IPV6 / what ever that
interoperates cleanly. The beautiful thing with traditional radio is that
anybody can stick a coat hanger in a cheap box and pick up some content. See
if anyone ever did this experiment with there kids but if you take a tube, wind
a coil of wire around it and attach a small germanium diode to it with a pair
of alligator clips and small speaker or headset attached something cool
happens. You start picking up your local AM radio stations. Everybody should
build a crystal radio with their kids. We need a digital equivalent. How can
we deliver these services wirelessly in a way that’s so cheap even someone
living on a few pennies per day can pull together the parts.

Android fits in here nicely obviously. Chrome OS and Linux are fine, anything
open source. I think you bring up points here but if the hardware vendor is
colluding with the carrier like you argue:) and I do see your point what’s the
alternative? Being able to switch between t-mobile and Sprint isn’ it. If
you’re really going to extend your arguments out and I’m not saying I disagree
but how do we build our digital equivalent of rabbit ears to serve everyone?

:)

Re: radio and iPhone 5S

2016-01-02 Thread Scott Granados
So let me ask you this because I’m genuinely not sure. What do you mean by
apple forcing or foisting carrier restrictions on customers? I’m aware they
make different phones for different networks but I think there’s a technology
reason for that. I also know they sell unlocked devices. Expand on that a
little for me I’m unclear what you meant.

Re: Problem with passwords in 1Password

2016-01-02 Thread Nicolai Svendsen

Hi!

I will have to try this, but if I understand you correctly, manually
entering a password in the password field reverses the order in which
you enter them. I haven't seen any setting that would change the
behavior, and I don't see how it would be a good thing to have either.

I haven't seen that, but I suppose you could always reach out to them
via Twitter on @1password or write them an email. If they can figure it
out, they usually enter it into their bug tracker.

This seems to only be happening with new entries. I went back and looked at
some of the older entries and the passwords are being spoken correctly. So I
can only assume this is not a problem specific to VO. I did some preliminary
web searches but did not locate anyone else experiencing this so thought I
would check here to see if anyone else has encountered this issue. This is with
1Password in Mac OS X and not the iOS version. I have not yet tested with the
iOS version to see if I encounter the same issue.
When I copy the password and paste, it is also backward. Is there some setting

Hi Ronald,

Yes, I can confirm the same happens on my macbook pro too. I've only just
noticed it because I normally use my mac with headphones and when the
headphones are plugged in, this change does not happen. So I was very
surprised when one day I disconnected my headphones and i noticed this strange
behaviour.

Good thing you are going to report this.

Re: radio and iPhone 5S

2016-01-02 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Hi Scott.

Thanks for the info, and the compliment. It does sound like my info on the US
is outdated, which makes me wonder why on earth Apple continue to foist carrier
restrictions on customers and insist on deals for sales. If Apple wants all
the control, they can easily go all-out retail, and take it. So why don’t
they? I can assure you that on this dank little island, as well as other major
players in Europe, the margins on carrier-supplied gear is as low as it can
possibly get, and there are no subsidies either. For consumers, Apple is just
the very expensive, but very attractive option, and not much else. We could do
without the absurd fawning over the health of carrier relationships. I have
put this down in a couple of bug reports to Apple, and they only ever get fixed
when the carrier agrees to sales targets for Apple. It’s ridiculous.

As for FM radio, I’m really with you. Convergence is a good and healthy
thing. And indeed, between demand, hardware design, aerial design, and chipset
limitations, it probably just doesn’t make any sense. Still, I do hear those
arguing on the basis of emergency communications, and nostalgia. Certainly the
one thing FM can do that the Internet can’t, at least now, is work anywhere
there is reception of the broadcaster. We need to get the Internet to a place
where radio mesh networking can take up the slack in times of crisis, or
resilient community networks are built and sustained. I don’t think that’s too
much to ask, and I’m fairly sure it will happen, one day. Then the Internet
will always be available, cheap, and reliable, and people won’t think twice
before turning on the “Radio”.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

So, to me, this is weak sauce.

Why put the option in, you’re telling me you can’t set up a separate session

Re: Choosing a Mac, getting started

2016-01-02 Thread Scott Granados
I would agree, pages and the Apple products are generally more accessible.
Microsoft has put work in to office 2016 however and has made big improvements.
I use outlook on the Mac now daily for work and it’s very good. Still, pages
and numbers etc seem to flow better and a bit more accessible but that’s my
opinion. Not sure if it’s worth a podcast or something people just need to try
for them selves.

Not sure about being paired in to places at once but the USB works great. Just
attach and a prompt will appear asking where you with to connect the device,
select windows, the default, and bam.

Good luck

Re: am on the lookout for any podcasts about setting up and using windows and vm fusion

2016-01-02 Thread Scott Granados
Hi, in my opinion VM Fusion is the best choice. I like being able to run
multiple operating systems at the same time and work between them freely. That
being said Virtual Box is another free option that does quite well.
Next, Mike Erigo on blindcooltech had a great podcast on setting up
fusion. It was old but it still works the same way all be it even easier and
more reliably in the newest releases. Totally worth your time to listen.

It’s a very easy process though, install fusion, activate the create new VM
option and follow the prompts. I used a Win 7 ISO and set up totally
independently with out eyeballs so you should be able to do this easily.

Good luck and please post any follow up questions you might have.

Thanks

Scott

Re: radio and iPhone 5S

2016-01-02 Thread Scott Granados
Hi, first let me say I totally echo Ricardo’s comments in that I really enjoy
your posts, find them packed with correct and valuable info and great opinions.
 So keep at it.:)

That being said, I’m with Ricardo on this one. I think, possibly and I’m
willing to be corrected but your data on the US while correct is outdated.
We’ve moved off the subsidy model to an ownership model where you buy the
phone, own it unlocked and can move as desired. There are contracts available
with discounts if you wish to commit but there are also no contract options
available along with a host of equipment finance options or you can buy your
gear outright.
Secondly, the US carriers have migrated to GSM. I actually helped in
this process designing the VOLTE pods deployed on Verizon and interconnecting
VZW with other carriers mainly European for roaming and interoperability. I
can definitely tell you that the relationship between the carriers and handset
providers is now one that is more adversarial than what you’re proposing. It
may have been that way but the manufacturers of hardware are starting to try to
push around the carriers and the carriers push back. It’s not a situation
where the carrier and hardware provider play nice nice and work collectively to
screw the customer. Things just aren’t that friendly or organized.:) Add to
that some of the hardware vendors also build the cells and tower equipment so
you could have a Microsoft Nokia optimizing the network for their gear while
Ericsson gear might favor Sony and nobody Apple etc. It gets even stranger
when you realize an Ericsson packet engine might actually be a Juniper M10I
with an Ericsson label literally slapped over the Juniper. And I assure, none
of these business divisions talk to the others in anyway that even resembles
efficiency. I could never find the Ericsson contact internal to Juniper to
work together on routing problems for example and so forth.
Next, are we sure that the iPhone has an FM chip in it. I don’t
believe it does at least I don’t see it as an option on any of the chips
including the qualcomm 35 series but that may be the guy behind the keyboard
googling and not reality.:)
If there is an FM subsection on the chip on the dye we then have to ask
our selves is it wired in to the rest of the circuit or is it disabled by the
vendor. Many times chips are produced and are all similar but in reality
operate at different grades. A pentium 4 at 2 ghz is the same literal silicon
as one that runs at 2.5 it’s just the one that runs faster was graded higher in
testing and is that little bit better. Likewise a radio chip might be produced
and all the key features work but the fM not being ordered by the customer is
not functional or substandard so the vendor just disrupts the traces that head
in to this area of the silicon.
Next, someone raised the points of antennae. This is true, the antenna
array in most cell phones is tuned up in the 1.8 - 2.2 ghz range with obviously
some exceptions for lower and higher frequencies. A lot of the spectrum lies
in that range or in the 700 - 800 mhz spectrum. That antenna is probably some
sort of active electronics tuned to these ranges. FM being in the 88 to 108
MHZ range isn’t anywhere near the same wavelength. Many times the headphone
cord was used for an antenna but that’s not optimal. Also, many of these chips
have so much noise in the 100 mhz range as well as the AM band that you can’t
pick up a signal over the interference. All the noise in the circuits obscures
the over the air signal. Huge problem especially in modern digital radios
including table top radios. Try finding a good AM receiver these days, it
ain’t easy.

Finally and maybe most importantly, I personally think radio in it’s analog
over the air form is at the end of it’s useful life. I spoke to a fellow with
Clearchannel not that long ago and he told me in many markets now the number of
internet listeners exceeds the number of over the air listeners. More and more
cars are coming with XM or pandora or native Internet so the home of what was
exclusively the radio before is now that of all your digital electronics. The
broadcasters would love to have this change, no more FCC, no content police and
no more expensive radio engineer. I think hams will still fill the roll of
emergency communications but for the average joe they could care less whether
the signal was delivered over IP or over FM modulation. So my point is the
interest to enable isn’t there, even assuming the capability is. Believe me,
if Apple thought people cared about FM radio enough to buy there phones it
would be enabled tomorrow.

just my $.02

Hi Simon,
Thanks for the info. I guess I'm not going to upgrade to windows 10

the latest app I had installed into win7 and everything is back to

Re: Braille displays with VMware

2016-01-02 Thread Caitlyn Furness
I think you have to go into the devices section of the tool bar within the vm
app and then find the display listed there. You can then press the connect
button.

I am still using vmware fusion 6.x, so if you are using a later version, this
might not work.

hth in some way,

Voice Over volume keeps changing in El Capitan

2016-01-02 Thread Ronald van Rhijn
Dear all,

Since last week I’m running El Capitan on a new iMac and have some issues with
the speech volume keeps increasing and decreasing by itself. The effect takes
place all the time and is gradual. I have audioducking and 3D audio turned off
and have no additional speech settings activated.
Perhaps it’s a language specific problem, I’m using the Dutch voices.
On a MacBook Pro I have the exact same issues.
It’s pretty annoying, will email Apple Accessibility as well, because Voice
Over has some more bugs. Like using high pitched voice, while this is disabled
also.

Thanks and happy new year,
Ronald

Re: Braille displays with VMware

2016-01-02 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
When I was running VMware with windows on an old Macbook pro as I haven’t
really ran windows with VMware on my I Mac or Mac mini, I could run my braille
displays with Bluetooth be it using Voice Over or the screenreader of one’s
choice. With windows 7, when you are running that, you need to connect your
braille display via bluetooth by connecting it to the bluetooth controller when
you are in windows. Once that is connected, you can then close down the VMware
and put voice over on and your display should then connect to the Mac
automatically. But first you must find the name of your port for bluetooth
within windows if you want this to work and whilst using windows, make sure
that Voice Over is turned off or it will not work once the VMware is off.

Good luck and a happy new year to all.

Kawal.
