Re: MacBook or MacBook Air?

2016-04-09 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Hi Sadam,

If I were you, and my choice was limited to just the latest MBA11 and the
latest MacBook, then there would be no contest: MBA11.

Why? Connectivity. Like the first MacBook Air way back when it was
introduced, the connectivity of the MacBook is horribly compromised: just one
USB type C port. Even if I weren’t sold on the MBA’s slightly smaller size and
its superior specifications, that one port would kill me. You’ve got to faff
about with adaptors if you want peripherals of pretty much any variety that you
already have, or if you also need power. You can’t benefit from Thunderbolt,
which means you’re not getting Ethernet at no cost either. The machine is
undoubtedly cute, of course, but in my opinion its real distinction is as a Mac
for the iPad generation. If that is not you, I’d seriously consider staying
with the tried and true and get a MacBook Air. It’ll be a good investment as
long as Apple strive to keep OS X running lean on lower-end dual-core hardware.
It’s either that, or wait for the next-generation MacBook, when Apple will
probably do a Google and put in a second, much-needed USB type C connector,
just like Google Pixel.

Just my opinion, of course. What you need is entirely dependent on your
tolerances, needs and desires.

Oh, and BTW, you can downgrade to Yosemite on either, because that’s what both
shipped with. You don’t have to use El Cap if you don’t want to.

Cheers,
Sabahattin

Re: MacBook or MacBook Air?

2016-04-09 Thread Scott
The current battery life across the Macbook Pro line is excellent. I can go a
full day with a 13 or 15 inch device running the high end configurations. Note
I’m using al SSD drives which are less power consuming. Also El Capitan has
some decent power saving features that seem to really make a difference and if
you run virtual machines Fusion 8 does well on the battery side.

Depends on what you want to do over all. If you just want internet access, web
browsing, document creation and that sort of thing the Air will treat you well.
If you want many virtual machines or other more intensive applications then go
with a larger Macbook pro. Just depends on your use case.

Good luck.

Re: MacBook or MacBook Air?

2016-04-09 Thread Alex Hall
One thing to remember is that in June or September, Apple will likely be
releasing updates to its Macbook lineup. I'd wait for those, to either get the
newest or grab the next-newest on sale. This is particularly true of the Retina
Macbook, which doesn't have wonderful power right now (Core M processor?
Really?) and is likely due for at least a minor upgrade this year.

Re: MacBook or MacBook Air?

2016-04-09 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Sadam,

I did switch in 2011, but not from a white Macbook.

As for battery life, I do get a full day out of my MBA. I think the official
spec for this model is 12 hours, and that seems about right to me. My current
MBA is a 2013. I have never had a problem with running out of juice during the
day, and that was a problem on the 2011 model. I don't know what the current
specs for battery life are on either the 2016 Macbook or MBA, that's something
you might want to research.

Good luck with your decision.
Cheers,
Donna

Re: MacBook or MacBook Air?

2016-04-09 Thread Sadam Ahmed

Thanks Donna,

I will be doing a lot of traveling between home and school so good
battery life is a must have.

Did you switch from the old white 13-inch MacBook that Apple stopped
producing in 2011?

Will go to the Apple Store later this morning and have a play with the
different laptops.

Really appreciate your contribution on this topic.

Stay well,

Sadam Ahmed

minute. I love the smaller size and the lighter weight, and it does everything

Another drawback to the MacBook air is that you can't replace or upgrade
individual components. So if something happens to it, your whole computer is

Re: MacBook or MacBook Air?

2016-04-09 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi Sadam,

my advice would be to think about what your needs are. How much battery life do
you need? What do you plan to do on the computer? Personally, I switched from a
MacBook to a MacBook air about four years ago, and haven't regretted it for a
minute. I love the smaller size and the lighter weight, and it does everything
I need. However, you do get slightly less battery life, if that's an issue.
Another drawback to the MacBook air is that you can't replace or upgrade
individual components. So if something happens to it, your whole computer is
trashed. You cannot upgrade the memory. Or the processor. So if you get a
MacBook air, think about what your needs are now and what they are likely to be
in the future, and buy accordingly. Cheers,
Donna

MacBook or MacBook Air?

2016-04-09 Thread Sadam Ahmed

Hi all,

I'm in the market for a thin yet portable laptop.

Despite the travesty that is El Capitan I would like to stay in the Mac
family if possible.

Any suggestions?

I've been eyeing the sleek MacBook but the Airs also look good.

Have people tried the new keyboard on the MacBook?

Feedback is appreciated.

Best wishes,

Sadam Ahmed

Microsoft accessibility.

2016-04-09 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
On a different list that I am on, I heard that Microsoft is looking for
feedback on the accessibility of Outlook for Macintosh.

Here is the information:
Hello friends & colleagues,

As you know, together we were able to improve the accessibility/usability of
many products in the past 10-12 years. We collaborate successfully with many
vendors for higher education including Blackboard, Desire2Learn, Moodle,
Instructure, Elsevier, Ebsco Publishing, Elluminate, Qualtrics, Trumba,
ServiceNow, and many more.

In 2013 a couple of colleagues of mine from UIUC and I tested & evaluated
Microsoft Lync and Outlook. We shared the results with them and wanted to
engage them in similar collaboration efforts as we have with all other vendors
but we were unable to do it as their NDA terms and conditions were not
acceptable to the UIUC legal team. As the result, we never had the chance to
discuss our findings with the respective product development teams.

The good news is that they have used our findings about Outlook and Lync to
improve their accessibility in their latest versions. I don't know at this time
how much of our recommendations have been utilized in the latest version but I
am glad that they have at least considered them.

Last week a couple of my UW-IT colleagues and I had a productive meeting with
JJ Cadiz, the head of program management for Desktop Outlook and principal
owner of accessibility for all the Outlook clients and a few colleagues of his
team. We discussed how we could collaborate and contribute to the accessibility
of Microsoft products.

To be honest with you, I have never seen Microsoft so motivated to work with
the accessibility community toward improving the accessibility of their
products, and I would like to use this opportunity to establish a constructive
and productive collaboration with them.

We are working to establish two parallel groups that will be working with
Microsoft on accessibility of their products. This is a rare opportunity for us
to get involved and shape the accessibility of the products that we all have
been using in hopes of changing the culture of accessibility at Microsoft.
1. Microsoft Collaboration Group
Microsoft Collaboration Group is a long-term project to extensively improve
Microsoft Office family products. Some of the products in question are Outlook
client, OWA, SharePoint, Office 365, etc.

* Purpose:

o Establish a long-lasting, sleek, and energetic collaboration group with
Microsoft.

o Select one product at a time, identify accessibility/usability issues, and
discuss the findings with the respective Microsoft development team.

* Commitment:

o Have knowledge and experience in accessibility and accessible design.

o Are interested in collaborating on accessibility of MS products.

o Can dedicate minimum of 5 hours in a month.

This collaboration involves accessibility/usability testing and evaluation and
reporting on the products that we choose. We will finalize the logistics once
we have the 10 members.

2. Mac Outlook Project
Mac Outlook Project is a project focusing specifically on Mac Outlook. We want
five folks use it as their everyday, primary mail client. We expect to have Mac
Outlook insider builds available for a long time.

* Purpose:

o Provide direct feedback to Mac Outlook Engineering Team about the
accessibility and design of the product.

* Commitment:

o Be an everyday user of Mac Outlook who's living on the insider builds.

o Provide ten to fifteen minute feedback on rare (maybe one per month) design
changes.

o Available for the occasional (once every 3 months) 1-hour call.

Time commitment would be for as long as folks are willing to participate.

If you are interested to join either of these collaboration groups, please let
me know.

Thanks,
Hadi

Voiceover number of character repeats

2016-04-09 Thread -

Hello all,

When one has a number of characters in a row vo can be set to speak them
or not depending on their number. For example, 3 "x's" in a row will be
spoken or not depending on the voiceover utility verbosity - text repeat
setting.

I cann't get this to work. Given 3 characters in a row, regardless of
the number chosen vo continues to speak them.

I have tried 2 3 and 4 as the repeat number to no avail. What am I
missing and what needs to be done to make it work as desired?

Thanks.

Re: Apple Watch Specific Apps

2016-04-09 Thread Jenine Stanley
I like the app Due for all manner of reminders. The native Reminders app often
doesn’t trigger on the Watch for me.

If you use Tiles, the Tile app is awesome on the Watch. I also have the Red
Cross emergency app which can be set up to give you alerts for weather and
other types of emergencies for you and people in other places. I have them set
for my family’s various locations and my workplace, all of which are in
different states or part of the state.

Re: Reading PDF image files

2016-04-09 Thread 'Roland Zitzke' via MacVisionaries

Hi Helga,

paid solutions for your problem would be Abbyy Fine Reader or Prizmo.

Abbyy used to be available as a 30 days trial, don’t know if this is still
the case.

If you need a free solution, PDF Sandwich is the (terminal) app go install.

After latest Garageband update: Shifting pitch of regions?

2016-04-09 Thread 'Roland Zitzke' via MacVisionaries

Hello,

the latest update of Garageband is supposed to introduce some accessibility
improvements.

However, I am having a couple of rather strange problems, may be someone
can confirm them or even has a solution.

When working with an audio track I can enable the editor. By doing so I get
a group of controls letting me chose between the whole track or region.
Selecting the whole track gives me the option of transposing which is shown
as percentage instead of steps as I would expect it.

However, choosing a region will only display the option of playing it back
reversed.

I used to overcome this by moving some splitters but they appear to be gone
now.

Instead, VO+F2+F2 shows two windows where one unnamed window just contains
a horizontal zoom bar.

Am I missing something?

TIA, Roland

Re: Apple ID And Apple Watch

2016-04-09 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
But you don’t need your Apple ID to reach the stores on your watch. You want
the iCloud ID, because that’s the one that handles Handoff and whatnot. It
would work (less well, but it would work) without the Apple ID, if you didn’t
need any Apple ID exclusives such as Apple Pay.

IIRC, anyway.

Re: How To Set A VoiceOver Activity for Notification Center info

2016-04-09 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Nah, they’re hopeless for me as well. It’s the chief reason I downgraded to
Yosemite. I notice that they are particularly problematic when web areas
(“HTML content”) is involved; maybe that’s the triggering factor, but if so,
then it’s particularly unfortunate for someone like me who uses activities to
discriminate between normal use and web browsers.

Anyway, nice tip, Mark. Glad it works more-or-less as intended for you.

RE: Ibooks on Ipad mini and braille.

2016-04-09 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Michelle, et al,

You can set iOS 9.x to automatically turn pages as you pan the Braille display.
 To do this:

1.
>From the Settings menu, select General.

2.
Select Accessibility.

3.
Select VoiceOver.

4.
Select Braille.

5.
Set the "Turn Pages When Panning" option to "ON".

Now, as you pan, the page will turn, automatically.

I have not explored OS X to see if such an option exist. For the most part, I
only read iBooks, via Braille, in iOS.

Hi Anders,

Michelle Stevens here,

Not sure if my advise is any good for answering your question?

On the IPhone I use Braille display with iBooks all the time.

To change pages I use the right rocker button on my focus 14. To go top of
page I use space bar and dots 123 and arrow until I get to the text. If you are
a quick Braille reader I sometimes use second and third fingers swipe down
screen to read pages continuously without stoping. It is easy to loose your
spot because VO is reading quickly.

Good luck

Hello All,

I just posted the following information in an existing thread, a few moments
ago. I believe I posted this information to the list a couple of years ago,
also. However, because I think it important, I am posting it again, in this
thread for those who may not be aware of the feature.

How To Set A VoiceOver Activity for Notification Center info

NOTE:
This document assumes that you know how to create and configure VoiceOver
Activities.

Generally speaking, I prefer my default system VO Voice to be Alex.
However, I want any and all of my system notifications to use my beloved
Samantha voice.

The short answer:

To set a VoiceOver Activity for the Mac OSX Notification Center, when
selecting a finder app in the Activity configuration process, simply locate
the Notification Center app and select it. The notification app is located
in the Core Services Folder of the Library folder which is located on the
hard drive's system folder.

The long answer is that when you Click on the Find App option during the
Activity creation process, you will be placed in the Applications folder.
The Notification Center app is located in a different place. You must find
the correct folder and then simply select the Notifications.app file.

A.
First, open the computer's hard drive.
Second, open the System folder.
Third, open the Library folder.
Fourth, open the CoreServices folder.
Fifth, select the Notification.app file.

or

B.
Use the Command + Shift + G key-combo and type in
/System/Library/CoreServices/
to get to the correct folder, super fast.

Good Luck and Enjoy.

Mark
