Re: Locked out

2016-06-07 Thread Sabahattin Gucukoglu
Yes, Tracey, that is basically what it means.

Essentially your login password is protecting your Keychain database. That
database holds sensitive passwords and keys and other things stored there, but
not much else. If you want real security for your data, use FileVault, which
encrypts *everything*, and requires the key even before the system begins to
boot from the file system. Moreover, it means anybody with physical access to
your machine can’t simply steal your data by either removing the disk
containing it, or connecting the disk (or the computer, in Target Disk Mode) to
some other computer.

Something I didn’t see mentioned but it’s quite important: when you reset your
password using this method, you also throw away any data in your keychain,
which will be reset. So, make sure you know (or have otherwise backed up) any
form data, keys, passwords, certificates, etc., that you have stored in there.
My experience tells me that there are many surprises to be felt, for instance
you lose your iCloud session keys, as well as many other application login
session keys that are stored in the keychain for your convenience. Perhaps
this is one strong argument for allowing your login password to match your
iCloud password; it means you can fall back on iCloud to perform your reset,
and this is supported by modern OS X releases.

I was thinking the exact same thing. As anyone could just boot the system and
then hit command+R. I mean, surely there has to be some way to prevent just
anyone getting ahold of your mac and trying this little trick.

overwrite the Mac’s log in password? That doesn’t sound very secure.

Re: need recommendation for Macbook pro case

2016-06-07 Thread Scott Granados
I’ll make a note of this one. I have a pretty good bag on the class side now,
I have a Waterfield which are hand made bags made from Italian leather. They
manufacture them in San Francisco and I’ve had one for years. Very expensive
but can take a beating and still look good.

I’m looking for more of a hard shell arrangement to harden the laptop itself.
David seems to have a good suggestion.

Thanks all for the responses

Hi,

At a basic level, I guess it's possible. If you use File Vault protection
though, this reset becomes very secure.

fs: loaded Apple iMac and mag safe 2 charger for mac book air...

2016-06-07 Thread Cameron Strife
Hi everybody.

I have permission from the list moderator to post this message...

If interested in either of the below items, please e mail me off list
at: came...@cameronstrife.com

21 inch loaded Apple iMac with Intel quad core I7 processor at 2.8gHz
per core, 16gb of ddr3 ram, internal 256gb solid state hard drive,
internal 1tb mechanical drive, Intel Thunderbolt, Firewire 800,
airport wireless, bluetooth, sd card reader, superdrive etc.

The machine is in good condition with no heating issues or hard drive
performance etc. (There is a small dent on the right edge of the
monitor portion but this will not get any worse and does not effect
the display quality according to a couple of sighted people I had
check it out. It is an easy repair but I'm not attempting it. In any
case, it's purely cosmetic.) Keyboard, mouse, and power chord
included. This is a beast for audio production on mac OSX or windows
seven/windows ten! (I've used all three operating systems on this
machine.)

Even if you don't work in audio, this is a killer machine for general
computing and entertainment etc.

I also have a new in the box mag safe 2 charger for a thirteen inch
mac book air. We had bought it for my gfs air and then realized it
didn't work and that they don't have an adapter to use it with an
older air.

Thanks,

Cameron.

RE: Locked out

2016-06-07 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi ET,

He could log in and reset his password,

This will really require eyesite though unless someone else can tell me how to
switch screans from the recovery mode.

 ET to do this,
Shut the machine down and restart in to the recovery console, so that's hold
down the command key and the letter R,
Once it starts up bring up the menus using option ctrl and m,
Scrole across to the utilities menu and then down to the terminal,
Open terminal and then I've gotta remember this,
It's either resetpassword,or passwordreset,
Enter after the command and you'll get a table of users in the reset password
screan, select the user you require and then do a password reset your password
only has to be 1 character long but best to choose a good password.

Also note that after the password change you will get prompted for a update of
the keychaine I choose he to setup a new keychaine.
But that's just me

Hope that helps.
