RE: Apple updates OS X El Capitan with final non-security fixes

2016-07-18 Thread Simon Fogarty
So does this mean it's the last update to el capitan and that it's cosmetic
with no security udpates?

So I can only assume from this that mac os x Siera will come out with no
security issues or am I hoping for to much.

 You guys have bears?!

We've got Beer, lots and lots of Beer, but no Bears!

I suggest the Great White North. No spiders of any consequence, only a few
snow snakes in the mountains, although they're actually just stories we tell to
freak out tourists, lots of empty space, mostly free medical care and lots of
us tough guys who don't even bother wearing a jacket when it's below freezing.
Then again, it's bloody hot in the summer, -45 C in the winter, not much of a
Fall or Spring, wildfires that send us out of our city for months, lots of
taxes and millions of mosquitos that could gang up and haul you away for
dinner. And, we tend to welcome anyone who'd like to brave our vast country.

RE: Slack on iOS and Watch OS

2016-07-18 Thread Juan Hernandez
The iOS app is working pretty well. I have been using it for a year, and have
seen it improve. The same goes for the Mac OS X version as well. That works
pretty good aswell, and has improved over the last year.

The web version of slack is always my goto when in windows, because it is very
accessible via internet explorer/firefox/chrome. The windows Slack so far is
like 100% not accessible. Hopefully that’ll change soon.

Best,

Hello Everyone,

Earlier today, I received an email in my Inbox with a link to
a cNet article that I wanted to read.

When I click on the link, Safari opens and, in addition to the
text, a Flash video begins to play. Try as I may, I cannot
seem to stop the video. This is to say, I cannot find the
pause/stop button.

I realize that my Safari skills are not as advanced as they
should be so I'm hoping one of you Safarians can inform me as

I grew so frustrated with this endeavor that I finally gave up
and opened the article in Windows Explorer where I could read
the text without being bothered with the video playback, via

Subject: I Need a Little Help in Safari

Hello Everyone,

Earlier today, I received an email in my Inbox with a link to a cNet article
that I wanted to read.

When I click on the link, Safari opens and, in addition to the text, a Flash
video begins to play. Try as I may, I cannot seem to stop the video. This is
to say, I cannot find the pause/stop button.

I realize that my Safari skills are not as advanced as they should be so I'm
hoping one of you Safarians can inform me as to how to stop the playback.

I grew so frustrated with this endeavor that I finally gave up and opened the
article in Windows Explorer where I could read the text without being bothered
with the video playback, via Jaws.

Each module in HP’s machine consists of a fabric memory module, a

plug in to this eventually, security is implemented from the hardware up
instead of added on top like the machines do today. There will be huge

shared space for global access, and since it’s built in light instead of

gets so there’s no theoretical maximum. Like I said, Sky Net.:)

You don’t think of HP as being that cutting edge any more but this is a

the Mac might be going away but to be replaced with something a whole

The idea is that instead of processors and nodes in the cloud like we

This means a base increase of performance over conventional circuits

Think of a radio wave taking 8 minutes to get from our Sun to our

they’re using the idea of the Singularity (AKA Ray Kurzweil and the

The idea is that instead of processors and nodes in the cloud like we
have now there will be a massive pile of addressable memory. They
have built this system, memory is stored on fabric made of photons
meaning memory is stored on particles of light instead of electrons.
This means a base increase of performance over conventional circuits
of 1000 times but it gets crazier than that. Once data is stored in
photons you can start applying principles of quantum mechanics using
ideas like entanglement to instantly transfer data over any distance.
Think of a radio wave taking 8 minutes to get from our Sun to our
planet in perfect conditions, now imagine modulating one out of two
photons in a pair and seeing it’s results over that same distance
instantly because information can exceed the speed of light.

Re: Two First Generation Track Pad Questions

2016-07-18 Thread -

While the trackpad will power down after a time of inactivity, the battery
is still being used monitoring the resumption of activity.

Longest battery life comes with turning it off completely. Hold the end
button in for a time, as I recall there is an indication of total power
off.

Yes, the button is a power button. Usually, I hold it in for about two seconds
to power it up. There's no real need to power it down as it simply goes to
sleep to conserve battery power when not in use. Mine lasts for months without
shutting it off.

I am interested in the following:
Using VLC along with my external microphone, possibly adding compression to

I have also discovered that there is not a way to edit the information on the

Give it a go, but he lives in wellington, it's windy as a wind farm,
But it is far enough away from the south island for us to not care, oh and
you'd have to learn to speak English correctly, and be able to handle running
naked in the snow.

Even better would be being able to play rugby in the snow, oh and if you don't
know what rugby is, then your really in trouble, it is the biggest religion in

We’re in for very interesting times. I was reading about some applications
today designed to run on “the machine”. One was a linux instance that has no
distinction between memory or hard disk, everything is just running in
addressable memory. Each instance is built with a minimum of a petabyte of
assigned storage.

Each module in HP’s machine consists of a fabric memory module, a processing
module and a fabric switch. These modules all link together in to one big
addressable compute space. Their idea is everything will plug in to this
eventually, security is implemented from the hardware up instead of added on
top like the machines do today. There will be huge blocks of free space for
open source use, paid space for company data, shared space for global access,
and since it’s built in light instead of electrons it’s just as fast no matter
how large and complex the design gets so there’s no theoretical maximum. Like
I said, Sky Net.:)

You don’t think of HP as being that cutting edge any more but this is a huge
deal.

It makes you wonder how much longer we’ll be dealing with laptops or phones or
tablets or anything recognizable. Sabahattin may be right, the Mac might be
going away but to be replaced with something a whole bunch more interesting.

believe it or not but basically they’re using the idea of the Singularity (AKA
Ray Kurzweil and the Singularity).

The idea is that instead of processors and nodes in the cloud like we have now
there will be a massive pile of addressable memory. They have built this
system, memory is stored on fabric made of photons meaning memory is stored on
particles of light instead of electrons. This means a base increase of
performance over conventional circuits of 1000 times but it gets crazier than
that. Once data is stored in photons you can start applying principles of
quantum mechanics using ideas like entanglement to instantly transfer data over
any distance. Think of a radio wave taking 8 minutes to get from our Sun to
our planet in perfect conditions, now imagine modulating one out of two photons
in a pair and seeing it’s results over that same distance instantly because
information can exceed the speed of light.
Imagine HP releasing this to open source developers so unix
instances automatically boot with hooks in to this memory fabric, the internet
of things starts dumping data in to this system. By 2020 there will be over 30
billion connected devices, that level of connectivity will crush the network as
it stands today but ideas like this allow us to progress past Moore’s law right
down to the photon level rather than primitive atoms.:)

Read a lot more here
http://www.labs.hpe.com/research/themachine/

I used to laugh at the idea of computing becoming self aware and intelligent
especially by 2029 on the near end or 2045 on the far end. IF possible I used
to think it would take hundreds of years especially considering where we
started. I’m not laughing any more. I’m wondering if 2029 isn’t to far out?
I’m not sure if I’m ready for my computing infrastructure to be alive rather
than a thing. Wait until the human machine interfaces become so good that you
hard wire your brain right to the network and we’ve got 9 billion brains
available for parallel processing. I’m in! For anyone who doubts it, go
outside, look at the billion people staring at their phones wandering around
the country side staring like zombies in their phones finding Pokemon. This
enhanced reality thing, it’s just the primitive start, the model A ford
equivalent of it’s time, it’s about to get really really interesting!

We have no snakes except the ones we call polititians
We have a few spiders but nothing deadly just a couple that will make you sick
for a while, although we do have one called the Avindale spider which was used
in a movie called aracnophobia, looks mean but not a problem.
Redback spiders in central Otago but they sleep for the winter and do not much
for summer.

We've got people with guns, but they are called farmers, or hunters or police
sometimes a crim will get one and try something but they normally end up really
unhappy or dead.

You know, it’s interesting, all kidding aside I can’t imagine myself being a
citizen of another country. It’s funny how we attach to the places we’re born.
I’ve also had America / Apple pie / Baseball / tea parties and liberty bells
drilled in to my head since I can remember so it’s hard for me to imagine. I
could definitely see living somewhere else and working in another part of the
world but I’m not sure about citizen. Maybe my ideas are to outdated.

Thanks for the tip about setting the modifier key to padlock, can I set an

If you press “option” first and hold it, then press “control” without letting

One thing that I’ve found helps with Slack is to set the VO modifiers to allow
caps lock as an option. My guess is that some sort of keyDown event gets fired
whenever any key that would register does so (I.e. Option, particularly since
it can be used to type extended characters), and pops focus into the input
field. Caps lock is handled entirely by the OS (illustrated nicely by how many
hoops we have to jump through to pass that key to VMware Fusion), and is thus
not intercepted by Slack.
Find is your friend. Search for “new messages since” to find the date of the
last message, then search backward for that date to read what went on in your
absence. One thing I can’t seem to do is close the pop-up windows such as, for
instance, the search box, short of closing and reopening the app. If Slack are
engaging in public discourse with their blind users, I’d love to chime in,
since Slack seems to be part of my complete breakfast set of
tools I need at my employer.

Is there a way to revert back to the current production release if one tried
the beta and found it too buggy? I know if I stick it on my watch, for all
intents and purposes, it's a beta device forever forward that would no longer
be able to be legally sold to someone else if I should decide to get the watch
2 or whatever they have up their sleaves next down the road. I wanted to dabble
around with it to see if the Airplay bugs with VO will end up fixed where VO
has an affinity to default to airplay if it is on at the time you tripple tap
home. That causes other goofy issues with my stream programs flipping back to
the phone internal speaker if I skip a song or flip channels at times, and then
the not so good ducking bug to keep the device receiving airplay at low volume
until you restart VO. I would almost use VO through Airplay if Apple could
figure out reduction of the delay to a tolerable level. I'm not entirely sure
why they need about a second or two of delay on a home wifi network that has
little other activity going while I listen to stuff through it. We probably
have a ways to go in technology evolution before we could have unnoticeable
delay to speakers on a network.

No we can’t, but the question looks ok.

The public beta is for anyone with an Apple ID. It costs nothing unlike the
developer betas which are at no additional charge once you pay the $99 annual

Hello Everyone,

Earlier today, I received an email in my Inbox with a link to a cNet article
that I wanted to read.

When I click on the link, Safari opens and, in addition to the text, a Flash
video begins to play. Try as I may, I cannot seem to stop the video. This is

I realize that my Safari skills are not as advanced as they should be so I'm

I grew so frustrated with this endeavor that I finally gave up and opened the

RE: Two First Generation Track Pad Questions

2016-07-18 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Arnold,

Yeah the batteriescan last for months,
I think I only changed mine twice but I don’t use it all the time.

As for the touchpad 2 from apple, I’ve only charged it once since it came on
the market and I purchased it.

  So that’s over 6 months.

It will be interesting to see which one of the following my track pad ends up
being. You say that a set of batteries lasts for months. I also have read
that probably the most negative thing about the first generation track pad was,
they can go through a set in less than a week. I hope mine is the former.

Hi,

If the MacMini was purchased with the Trackpad straight from Apple, it is
usually already paired for you. If not, upon startup, it should ask to pair.
Yes, the button is a power button. Usually, I hold it in for about two seconds
to power it up. There's no real need to power it down as it simply goes to
sleep to conserve battery power when not in use. Mine lasts for months without
shutting it off.

RE: Two First Generation Track Pad Questions

2016-07-18 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi,

When you start up and setup or configure your new mac when it start up it
should prompt you for any Bluetooth devices,
This will allow you to pair your track pad.

Yes the button on the right hand end of the battery compartment is the on /
off button, hold it for a second should turn it on

If the Bluetooth keyboard / mouse setup after start up doesn’t work then use
your keyboard to go in to system preferences and under Bluetooth pair the
trackpad there, it’s not diffifuclt.

Good luck.
