Re: To Unified English Braille Readers

2016-07-26 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Well, liblouie 3.0..0 just came out with better support for UEB appearing to be
the main difference from the 2.6 releases that have been available for a while.
I understand that FS uses liblouie for its translation, so perhaps this update
is what was needed for attributes to appear on the Windows side.

For Macintosh my sleuthing appears to indicate that they are using the Dux
service.

In 10.11.5 there is the following file in the OS:
Duxbury: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures
/System/Library/ScreenReader/BrailleTables/Duxbury.brailletable/Contents/MacOS/Duxbury
 (for architecture i386): Mach-O bundle i386
/System/Library/ScreenReader/BrailleTables/Duxbury.brailletable/Contents/MacOS/Duxbury
 (for architecture x86_64): Mach-O 64-bit bundle x86_64

I kinda wish I had found liblouie there, but in any case, we can look at the
capabilities of the underlying translator as the most we can expect out of a
specific screen reader.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

I did find the binary that does braille translation for the Macintosh
appears to be based on Duxberry if that makes any difference. FS appears
to have moved to LibLouis for their Braille translation in UEB.

Voxstar USB headset

2016-07-26 Thread Janine Smith
Hi

I cannot get a recording in Amadeus Pro using my Voxstar headset both on the
Mac and the Windows virtual machine. The headset works fine on my stand alone
windows machine. I have been into system preferences and have set both input
and output to the voxstar. Microphone volume set at 100%. Set to not mute. I
can hear voiceover through the headset. I have got the voxstar set as the input
device in Amadeus. Amadeus is working fine with a USB Logitech headset. When I
try to do a record, nothing, the level metres are not moving. End up with a
silent recording. Any ideas? Appreciate any suggestions? Regards Janine

Re: FileMaker, or other database?

2016-07-26 Thread John JD Denning
Thanks for the input both of you. It's hard to justify the high cost of
FileMaker for my very easy needs. I would use bento if it was still around and
modern. But I'm really disappointed that FileMaker hasn't come out with a light
version a stripped-down version for home users. At a much lower cost. I don't
need all the power of a modern FileMaker.

I don't even need relational. A flat file system would be good. But I would
love the power and or most of the advanced features of today's FileMaker. The
capabilities of version four would do me just fine.

Thanks again.

Re: FileMaker, or other database?

2016-07-26 Thread Slau Halatyn
FileMaker is accessible for the most part. I haven’t tried creating new
templates but I’m using a database I created back around 1992 with FileMaker 4
and it’s working just fine. Dialogs and such are fully accessible. I found it
just a tad confusing when trying to create a brand new database within
FileMaker 12 but I’m sure with a little sighted assistance, I could get around
that initial hurdle. I simply haven’t had the need since I have that template I
created back in the day.

Re: FileMaker, or other database?

2016-07-26 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

FileMaker used to have a product called Bento which was more of a personal
database app na it was quite accessible. They discontinued it at the end of
2013. The accessibility of FileMaker itself in the past was not particularly
stellar, although I really can't comment on it anymore as I've not touched a
database for about 5 years or so.

Re: Accessible online banking

2016-07-26 Thread Larry Thacker Jr.
Bank of America, though a bit complex, is useable and they actively work to
keep it so. One thing to note is that the prompts refer to what one would do
in Windows and sometimes you have to adapt a bit with Voiceover. For example,
the drop-down menus tell you to press ctrl-space and then tab through the
choices. With voiceover the ctrl-space works but then yo need to use standard
voiceover navigation and not the tab key to get to the choices. This might be
due to the way I have something set. I am relatively new to the Mac, having
just gotten mine in March. They could do some things to clean up page
navigation but I don’t have any real trouble doing what I need to do.

2016-07-26 Thread Karen Lewellen

Hi Chris,
Speaking only for myself, regardless of ideas provided, your choice may
still be tied by where you are located stateside. Post 9/11 opening an
account with a bank not near you might not even be permitted. Is there a
bank you are considering about whose access you have questions?

Just some thoughts,
Kare

Re: OT: need referral for a top shelf labor law attorney in the Boston area

2016-07-26 Thread David Chittenden
Good luck with the attorney. I used to do advocacy work in California (not as
an attorney, merely as a disability rights advocate). Each state is different,
but all states have the ADA as the minimum.

As for employment, employers can ask any questions which cover whether a person
is able to perform the primary requirements of the job. The only question about
transportation that the employer is able to ask is, Are you able to get to work
at the required times? Questions relating to how one is able to manage getting
to work are not permitted and are against ADA, though I no longer remember
which section. Questions relating to personal matters that are not specifically
about being able to complete the job are not permitted.

Finally, make sure the lawyer is specifically focused on disability rights
employment.

Agreed, for me I just get the right sized one from the carrier. I think they
cost only a few bucks to the carrier now so they are more willing to let them
go for nothing. I switched a lot of mine out when it was announced that the

Surely the question of travel is irrelivant unless you sleep in your office
you travel to work, I'm sure Scott has travelled further than home before, may
be even on a train or in a plane,

What it comes down to is anything that would show the HR person as being an
ignorant scumbag would work in scotts favour and in the favour of anyone else
with a disability looking for work in this organisation.

Jo public or employer needs to stop looking at the disabilities and more at the
abilities of those they are employing!

If your employed one day to do a job you are skilled enough to do then the
employer better have a bloody good reason why on day 2 your not good enough to
be doing the job.

the questions scott shared are illegal from an employment
standpoint have been such for a grand while.
Hidden recordings might be questionable, asking about travel for a job that
does not require such is likely not going to be questionable at all.

RE: Purchasing an iPhone and not having a Sim card

2016-07-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
Scott,

I find the idea of cutting sims old now.

I have a number of packages of the sim adaptors for change the sim size
depending on which phone you need to put it in, however we have sim cards here
in NZ that are a 3 in 1 sim, so it's the full sized sim card with the micro and
nano sims also in it, you then just break the unwanted parts off and your left
with what you need.
Hell of a lot easier than having to cut thigns down nto size.

Chris, cutting SIM cards is standard practice. They make specific cutters and
tools that stores use to do this although you can do it yourself with a good
cutting tool. Many times you’re directed to do so by the carrier, in other
cases they give them away for free. T-Mobile is one that if you have a good
relationship with your local store they give them away and AT is one known
for cutting and reusing SIM cards, I suspect many stores will but I know in
some cases you’re specifically told to resize the sim. You can also get
adapters to fit the nano sim in a larger form factor so it can be reused in
both directions.

Good morning, I could've written your post 22 years ago at this time. I was

after three days they said I was not doing the work quickly enough.
I have been through the same thing. They would ask how are you going to get
here if you're blind, who dresses you, you know the drill. Anyway I'm not sure
who to refer you to for any legal help. I wanted to write an offer you more

I might know of someone that my direct me to someone to give you some guidance

RE: Purchasing an iPhone and not having a Sim card

2016-07-26 Thread Simon Fogarty
Yeah Chris,

When I started up my phones, it prompted for a sim but once up and running it
works if you take the sim card out but does say that the sim has been removed
which I for one just ignore.

Uh, news for you. I have an IPhone 6+ over here with no sim, and it's not
prompting me that there is no sim installed. And yes, this is a sim based
network phone which initially was through AT It's not jailbroken, no sim
unlock, nothing. It's jsut as it was from the AT store... no beta build
installed of iOS, nothing.

I wonder why for you, it would tell you that.

Maybe I'm confused.

Are you saying it pops up and nags you of this, or are you saying it says this
on the main lock sfcreen only. If the ladder, then yes. You're right.
I guess I'm thinking you're meaning it's constantly popping up a notification
telling you this.

Hi mary,

I think this depends on where you get it from on the planet,

You do have to put a sim card in an iPhone to get it up and running
otherwise it tells you that there is no sim card and spits the dummy.

However once you have it up and running you can take the sim out and use
the phone for other things but it will still tell you that the sim is
missing

Unlike android devices which don't really care so long as they havea wifi
connection they can get data on.

I recall seeing somewhere that if you buy an iPhone, such as an iPhone SE,
and you don't get a carriers Sim card to go with it, you can't use it. Is
that true? I have an android phone that I never had a Sim card for, and it
has worked just fine as a tablet more or less. I would like to use an iPhone
se as an iPod. Is that possible?
