Did you say that your buying a few iPhones for xmas?

Man they must be bloody cheap if your buying a few over there!

What phones would you buy people for xmas?

Honestly, it sounds like the way to go if you buy from Apple is just to buy the
unlocked version. You get the better modem and the most options. I’m going to
buy a few iPhones for Christmas will probably go that route myself.

Hi Phil, few things to note here. If you buy the verizon version of the phone
or the Unlocked version you can switch to any network you wish. The unlocked
and Verizon versions all support CDMA and use the Qualcomm chip, the GSM only
versions like the AT&T and T-Mobile do not support CDMA so in your case you’ll
have the maximum choices available. Remember also that Verizon always ships
their phones unlocked so you’re in good shape if you ever decide to change
networks again and you want to use this phone.
Next, in order of coverage, Verizon and AT&T are very similar, both
are major US carriers so you’re in good shape, T-Mobile is with in a percentage
point of both and Sprint is by far the least covered option. In terms of
network performance, T-Mobile is the best, Verizon is close behind in second
place, AT&T and Sprint are bringing up the rear with Sprint being the worst
performer by far. In terms of advanced Features, T-Mobile is the leader with a
close second in Verizon you could argue they are very similar, AT&T is a year
or so behind maybe a bit more and sprint is behind AT&T as they have poor LTE
coverage compared to the other 3. Bottom line, you’ll be happy with verizon
over all. If you want to try the most advanced network in terms of features
maybe grab a free trial SIM from T-Mobile and give it a 14 day spin to compare.
All 3 carriers T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon offer a home cellular connection
option, you can use WiFi calling on T-Mobile and Verizon and I believe AT&T and
all 3 also have an cellular to internet gateway. T-Mobile has a very good
option I use myself, AT&T has a less advanced gateway but it does work and
Verizon offers something in between. So if you choose to go VZW I think you’ll
like it. Let us know how you make out.

Regarding AT&T versus Verizon and coverage, you really need to check your
specific area. WhileVerizon has the broadest overall coverage nationwide, that
doesn't mean it's the best in your particular area. In other words, you should
have a sighted person whom you trust look at coverage maps, and also be sure
that once you get your phone, if the coverage proves unsatisfactory, you have a
period of time where you can return the phone and get out of your contract with
absolutely no penalty to you. You won't be able to use that same phone on AT&T,
because the modem in the Verizon iPhone 7 is different from the modem in the
AT&T and T-Mobile iPhone 7.

Fighting iOS Calendar Spam

November 25, 2016

Tech Tip

By J. D. BIERSDORFER

Question:
I have been getting spam invitations to my iOS calendar recently. They come
from Chinese accounts and their subjects are for super-discounted Ray-Bans and
the like. Is there any solution to this?

Answer:
Many iCloud users have recently reported an influx of spam in the form of iOS
calendar events and iCloud Photo Sharing invitations. While the delivery
mechanism is different, the calendar and photo-sharing invitations traffic in
the same old suspect offers for cheap goods as the junk mail and text messages
that came before. Unlike those older forms of spam, which can be filtered,
blocked or deleted, invitation spam usually offers Accept, Decline (or Maybe)
as your options — all of which notify the spammer that your account is live and
ready for more unsolicited offers.

While an Ignore button is currently not available so you can quietly bury these
unwanted invitations, dedicated users have come up with least two workarounds
for the calendar garbage. (For the junk photo-sharing offers, turning off the
iCloud Photo Sharing feature in your iOS Photos & Camera or iCloud settings
seems to be the only avoidance option at the moment.)

To ditch calendar spam you have already received, open the Calendar app, tap
the Calendars button at the bottom of the screen and then tap the Edit button.
On the next screen, select the Add Calendars option and give the new calendar a
name like Spam, Junk or something therapeutically snarky. Tap the Done button
at the top of the screen a few times until you arrive back on the Calendar
screen.

Select the spam invitation and move it to the new calendar you just made, and
then repeat the steps for all the unwanted invitations. When you are done, tap
the Calendars button at the bottom of the screen. Tap the lowercase “i” icon
next to the spam calendar, and on the next screen, swipe down and tap Delete
Calendar to flush the added spam without responding to it.

To make the spam invitations go to your iCloud mail — where they can be
filtered or deleted more easily — instead of going right to your calendar, log
onto your iCloud account on the web. Open the Calendar app, click the
gear-shaped Settings icon in the lower-left corner and choose Preferences. In
the Preferences box, click the Advanced tab, and under Invitations, click the
button to have all calendar invitations go to your email account instead of
your calendar. Click the Save button before you leave the screen.

Subject: A Question About Spam Calendar Event Invitations

Hello Everyone,

Just so you know, I am cross-posting this email.

Earlier today, I received a calendar sales event invitation from an unknown
sender. Upon opening the invitation from within my iOS Calendar app, it was
clear that this was a spammer as I could see the list of invitees all of which
were just variations on a theme, for example b...@icloud.com, b...@icloud.com,
etc.

The event invitation was promoting a weekend sale for sunglasses and the like.
As a result, the event appeared across three different days, corresponding to
the length of the event/sale; extremely annoying, to say the least.

The only buttons I could find upon which to act was either Accept button, the
maybe button, and the decline button.

I did not want to activate any of these buttons as doing so would send a
response to the sender, confirming the existence of my account.

Try as I may, I could not discover anyway to simply delete the event
invitation, itself, or the corresponding events from my Calendar, in iOS.

Just so you know, When I activated the button that linked to the sender, whose
account/email address consisted of Chinese characters, all I could do was to
either add the sender to my Contacts List, share my location, etc.
There was no option to block the sender nor anyway to report the event
invitation as spam.

Believe it or not, the most annoying thing, however, was not that the event was
added to my Calendar, for the duration of the event, it was that it showed as
an event to which I needed to reply. This means that the number 1 was
constantly displayed on the Calendar's badge-app, icon.

I called Apple Care but, after waiting on hold for what seemed like an
interminable length of time, I decided to go it alone.

At first, I thought about firing up my

2016-11-27 Thread Scott Granados

Next, in order of coverage, Verizon and AT&T are very similar, both are
major US carriers so you’re in good shape, T-Mobile is with in a percentage
point of both and Sprint is by far the least covered option. In terms of
network performance, T-Mobile is the best, Verizon is close behind in second
place, AT&T and Sprint are bringing up the rear with Sprint being the worst
performer by far.

Actually, most Mac OS systems are quite often checking for new patches and
installing them. If you go to Apple->About This Mac and then click the button
labeled System Report you will get loads of information about your system. One
of the items in the left column is called "Installs" and in there you can find
every patch to your computer. Generally something is pushed about once a week.

Best wishes,

Re: Verizon versus AT&T, new phone and questions.

2016-11-27 Thread Phil Halton
Thanks Mary, the Apple sales rep check to the coverage maps side-by-side from
Verizon and AT&T and they were pretty much identical in my area. However,
anecdotal information from other Verizon users nearby tells me they get better
coverage here than AT&T. Where AT&T Mike it one bar they get two or three
coverage maps then are more or less a generalization saying that there is
coverage, but not specifying what depth of coverage.
I'll put the phone through its paces within the first 10 days or so to stay
within the return policy and if it doesn't suit my needs, I'll revert back to
AT&T. Though, I think Verizon is going to do a better job for me around here.
Thanks a lot

Re: Verizon versus AT&T, new phone and questions.

2016-11-27 Thread Mary Otten

Re: Redmond pie article on airport replacements

2016-11-27 Thread Mary Otten
I don't own one. I only know what I read on forms and in some of the technical
press, and no, I don't mean Apple fan mags.
People have complained about lousy connectivity with home automation devices
and lack of updates. Like I said, I don't own one. Also lack of ports was
another complaint for a $200 device.

Verizon versus AT&T, new phone and questions.

2016-11-27 Thread Phil Halton
Hi,
I'm buying a 7+ jet black 128 gig phone this week and I am going to switch
carriers from AT&T to Verizon. My questions are these: is Verizon wireless at
least it's good if not better than AT&T as far as coverage goes? I get spotty
coverage with AT&T in certain important places like the gym, and even one bar
at my house. I'm hoping Verizon will get better coverage. By switching to a 1
GB data plan with Verizon, (I rarely use more than half a gig each month), I'll
actually save 10 bucks off my monthly charge for the new phone and the new
plan. What are the advantages to Verizon over AT&T ? is it just a superior
network overall? Thanks for any help
By the way, I selected jet black because, with the phone in hand, I noticed
that the finish is more "grippy" then the other finishes, And doesn't slip out
of my hands so easily.

RE: Mac OS safe mode

2016-11-27 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Jonathan,

I can confirm that it appears that once in safe mode that using command f5
will start voiceover however as there is no audio devices able to work vo
can’t be heard.

That is interesting. I expect there are a few commands necessary to enable
that. Do you have a general procedure on enabling speech output via AirPlay
while in safe mode?

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

Hi List,

I’ve recently done a mac training course with a certification exam to come,
this is for el capitan currently but I’ll be looking at updating it in early
2017 with a sierra certification as well.

Two sections of the course dealt with problem solving issues within the Mac OS
version,
Including having to use both Single User mode and Safe mode.

For those that don’t know what these are,

Single user mode is back to a unix command line interface with no GUI and
carefully written commands or your rebuilding your machine from scratch.

Safe mode is the gui interface but the machines running on no devices including
audio.

What I’d like to know is if anyone is aware of a way to get speech in to the
single user mode command line interface and also audio working in safe mode to
allow voiceover to work or something that will allow you to use the machine in
safe mode with some form of audio output?

I’m not a braille user so that wouldn’t work even if you could use a braille
device to read what is on the screan.

These things would need to be real time so using my phone with a KNFB reader
type software wouldn’t work as I’d have to be working fast to recover or
correct system related issues.

Has anyone got any suggestions here?

There must be a way to incorporate audio into these modes?

Cheers for any information you can supply.

Yeah I wondered about speakup or orca but hadn't thought of the USB flash drive
idea,
Good thought though might have to have a look at that one.

I don't know if it is possible, but if somehow you could start a linux session
from a flash drive from the mac commandline, you could use speakup to get the
mack work done.
