Hi Kare,

I will check out that website as well. That seems like it might be very
cumbersome trying to create a professional looking score through a web browser.
Are you a music student? I teach at the Berklee College of Music in a program
for blind and visually impaired students, and we teach Sibelius on windows, and
ProTools for the Mac. Maybe we can chat off list if you have any other
questions.

Best,
Wayne

Re: Ahead of iPhone 8, Virgin Mobile extends 'all you can eat for one year for $1' deal to switchers

2017-08-28 Thread Brent Harding
Now that this came out, I'm thinking of dumping my regular Sprint plan for
this deal, even at $50 a month, it still sounds like it would shave at least
$20 a month off the bill. Would Virgin still support using the wifi calling
I often use on Sprint when I'm at home or have wifi available? I understand
that during times of peak congestion that Virgin and the other Sprint
resellers get less priority than one would get by paying that $20 a month
premium, but would that really mean much most of the time? Is there any good
reason, if one was going to want to stay with the Sprint network to not save
money and jump on this Virgin inner circle bandwagon?

Mary, yes they do, they bought Virgin from Beardy Branson a few years ago.

Ahead of iPhone 8, Virgin Mobile extends 'all you can eat for one year
for

$1' deal to switchers

Virgin Mobile really loves iPhone users . After going iPhone-only back
in
June, and offering a really sweet deal to those buying a new phone, it
has
now extended the offer to existing iPhone owners switching to the
carrier.
The carrier says that any iPhone owner who ports their number to Virgin
will

be able to get the same 'all you can eat' $1 deal for a full 12 months .

When you bring your existing iPhone and transfer your phone number to
the
"Inner Circle" plan, you will enjoy 12 months of unlimited talk, text
and

high-speed data for just $1 on Virgin Mobile's nationwide network.
After the first year, you'll be switched to the company's standard
'unlimited everything' plan, which costs $50 per month. The deal needn't
end
there, though: you'll get an additional six months of service for $1 if
you

upgrade to a new iPhone.
As we noted before, the usual carrier caveats apply: your data usage may
be
'deprioritized' if you go over 23GB a month, and terminated altogether
if
you do a lot of roaming. To qualify, you'll need an iPhone 5s or later,
and
the offer is subject to confirmation of compatibility with Virgin's
network.
Virgin says that the deal is open for a short time, but doesn't specify
a

cutoff date.
"At Virgin Mobile, we don't like playing by the rules, even our own,"
said
Dow Draper, CEO of Virgin Mobile USA. "Consumers know that the Inner
Circle

is the real deal, but many love their current phones or don't want to
upgrade yet. So, now for a short period of time, you can bring your own
iPhone to Virgin Mobile and enjoy everything the Inner Circle offers -
including the savings - $1 for 12 months of service. It's also a great
way

to try out the Virgin Mobile network with your own iPhone."
It does say that there will be a $25 charge for the SIM from September
29.

Fasten App on iOS - IOS VoiceOver Focus Stuck in the Status Bar or "return to search"

2017-08-28 Thread Mika Pyyhkala
I am having an odd problem in the Fasten (a ridesharing app in Boston
and Austin, + possibly others) app, but I'm not sure if the issue is
specific to the app.

I am able to go in to the app and select my origin and destination.

However, on the confirmation screen, wherever I tap, the focus is either on
"return to search"
or part of the status bar
i.e.
"3 of 3 bars)
etc.

I cannot move VoiceOver focus away from either of the two above areas.

The only work around I have done is to 3x Home to close voiceover and
then tap on the button blind to try to request the ride.

Once the ride is requested, the issue also largely goes away.

I also have a spare iPhone 5S running now iOS 11 so I am going to do a
test and see if that gets the same results.

Anyone ever heard of an issue like this? Do you think its more a
Fasten or Apple bug?

Thanks,
Mika

RE: airpods and apple watch

2017-08-28 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Pair iPhone and Airpods.
Power off and back on Apple watch.
Choose airplay on Apple watch, then choose airpods.
Once it connects to watch, if you accidentally bump your phone's screen, the
airpods will switch devices.

Hi Donna,

All I could really say here is that it's fixed within IOS 11,

Still you have to tell the watch to connect to the pods, but it does work or
did a couple of weeks ago when I last used it.

Oh and that's with the latest watch OS and IOS 11.

Good luck.

 Hi,

I have had very little luck connecting my AirPods with my Apple Watch. When I
spoke with tech-support, they said this is a known bug.
Cheers,

Hi Anders,

MacOS Server is an app available in the MacApp Store. In Canada, it's $20, or
$19.99 to be exact. Not sure how much it is for you folks over across the
Atlantic, but it shouldn't be much more comparatively.

Re: wifi modem / routers

2017-08-28 Thread Scott Granados
So right now I’m using a Night Hawk X4 8500 from Net Gear. Supports triband
WiFi, the ability to aggregate two of the ethernet ports, 8 antennas, and a
nice healthy forwarding rate. You might also want to look at one of the mesh
systems like the Amplifi which has a few more knobs so could be customized for
your setup.

How’s that?

RE: error 404

2017-08-28 Thread Sarai Bucciarelli
Hi:
Yes, she can access links on Safari on the iPad.
I've gone back through my sent mail and found a message with a link, opened it,
and opened the link in the email. No issues there. That was my thought as well.
I'm just stumped.

Error 404 is a web browser error meaning the page couldn't be found.

You need to figure out where the problem is, or ask more specific questions
here. There's little anyone can say to help you without more information.

Some possibilities:

1.) Is she able to access links at all? What happens if she opens
the browser and accesses content on the web? Does that work?

2.) How do you know the link you're sending her is OK? How did you
confirm that?

Question 2 is not meant to offend. Please understand. It's important to verify
with precision that what you think you're sending is what's actually being
sent, and then that it's actually what's being received.

Good luck!

Strange happenings when trying to install VOCR

2017-08-28 Thread Krister Ekstrom
Hello and sorry for the cross posting to many lists, so those who have seen
this before don’t need to read it again.
I’m trying to install the VOCR macros and have encountered a very odd problem
here.
I’m running the ”import VOCR macros” application and nothing at all happens. I
have done what was suggested by running the ”install.command” file and all
seemed to go well. Then i tried to import the macros and when i open the
application for doing that, nothing happens, no indication that something bad
has occurred but no alert that a script or more have been imported to Keyboard
maestro either, only nada nothing happens. What obvious thing am i missing?
/Krister

Re: error 404

2017-08-28 Thread 'Janina Sajka' via MacVisionaries
Error 404 is a web browser error meaning the page couldn't be found.

You need to figure out where the problem is, or ask more specific
questions here. There's little anyone can say to help you without more
information.

Some possibilities:

1.) Is she able to access links at all? What happens if she opens
the browser and accesses content on the web? Does that work?

2.) How do you know the link you're sending her is OK? How did you
confirm that?

Question 2 is not meant to offend. Please understand. It's important to
verify with precision that what you think you're sending is what's
actually being sent, and then that it's actually what's being received.

Good luck!

RE: Smart TV

2017-08-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi,

I don’t remember having to set anything up on my tv it was a case of plug /
connect the apple tv’s to the Samsung tv and now anytime I hit my apple tv’s
remote the tv comes on to my HDMI channel 2, I’ve got my blueray plugged in to
HDMI 1 and my new chrome cast ultra in HDMI 4 and all of them start the tv
automatically when I activate them.

My apple tv 2gen also did this with it’s remote as well.

So sometimes there is a configuration to enable auto-on when Apple TV wakes up?
Does anybody know if Samsung TV's have this in their options menus. I can
control volume via HDMI so one would expect that power should also be able to
be controlled.

Thanks,

model I have is called the Ultra not sure if that’s what you’re using. You may
have to enable HDMI controls as well although in my set at least they were on

I located a 2015 UHD 4K 55inch screen with all and more than I wanted.

I can't say I'm a fan of the in built features such as Netflix and the

As for auto switching
Yeah sure does,

When I press a button on my apple tv Gen 4 remote the tv switchs on and to the
HDMI channel the atv is connected to,

My blue ray player does the same thing when I press eject to open the tray and
put my disk in,

I can't get my chrome cast to do this though, however I don't use it a lot so
don't worry about ti,

The only real issues I have with the auto switching is when I want to listen to

A pain in the a when you don't need a picture or even have one this I didin't
need to worry about when I had the gen 3 as I used optical to connect to the

I’m not sure free is the best option but thoughts greatfully appreciated.

This is just dumb, all music is about sex drugs and what ever is current at the
time. What do you think they are singing about in the majority of operas or in
classical music through until today.

All this is a reason for the hyper religious to deny life itself, it’s
irritating and it’s stupid but then again so is the belief in fictional
characters.

Religion can’t afford for freedom of thought so it just crushes all validity in
a subject with dumb ass blanket statements like that.

Wow

RE: Migration assistant question

2017-08-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
Hi Donna,

Have you got your old mac book in target disk mode?

I assume you are using some cable type be it network or thunderbolt or are you
using wifi?

The last time I did a migration it required the older machine to be in target
disk mode which is a case of turning the machine completely off and then hold
the "T" key down while the machine starts up, then see if your new mac book
picks up the older device.

Oh and target disk mode from memory doesn't have any audio indication that
it's in the mode.

 Hope this helps.

If by any chance this doesn't work,
Possibly your new mac book is broken and then you'll need to send it to me to
have it fixed!

I'll even give you 5 bucks for it to say thanks

I mean pay for the repairs...

Lol..

Hi all,

I am trying to migrate content from my old Mac to my new one. For the first
time, I am trying to use migration assistant rather than a time machine back
up, because my recollection is that someone on this list that that is a better
way to do this.

Both Max have been stuck in the same place for about two hours now. On the new
Mac voiceover is saying checking Donna's MacBook air. The continue button is
dimmed. There is a progress bar, but voiceover does not give me any information
about it. Two hours seems like a very long time to be stuck in the same place.
I have not yet checked what content I want to migrate. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Donna

Oh and that's with the latest watch OS and IOS 11.

Yeah it's a known issue with the watch os and earpods,

I can say it will work better when IOS 11 is released.

I can now go on to my watch and and Bluetooth tap my pods to connect to them

 So give it time.

Hi Simon,

I totally agree!
Its just "SD" "Sex Drugs & Rap"!

He should try to "write the rhyme not the "slime"! :) Any body can steel a loop
and "grind" it out! :( "Ancient Aliens" for the deluded, is when you brush
aside all the Beauty of the world, all the evidence that points to Our
intelligent Design. You ignorantly choose to ignore the evidence! And belch out
Ancient Aliens did it!"

RE: vpn services

2017-08-28 Thread Simon Fogarty
There are a number of cloud based vpn systems out there such as log me in and
express vpn where you subscribe to their service and then vpn connect to a
cloud based system that directs you back to yoru home machines
But bloody costly in the case of log me in.

Michael,

What is your purpose? VPN gets confusing because one can use the technology for
stealth purposes or to access services securely when not local.

If your desire as the original poster was is to access "home" devices while on
the road then your not going to want to use a cloud service. You really want a
router or UNIX server that can provide network tunneling that is located on the
edge between your home systems and the ISP's network.

If you want to set up a web server on the other hand, I would recommend using a
cloud service and then either using secure FTP or a VPN service to upload
content to the cloud service. I expect this is already part of the package of
the cloud provider though Essentially you have to be able to do maintenance and
content updates on your server if you only have a few pages you will probably
want the cloud provider to do all the maintenance and all you need to do is
drop HTML / JS / CSS files in the appropriate places which can be done with
SFTP or Kerberos enabled FTP.

Now, if you are touring around coffee shops and need to get work done this
would be the third use of VPN technology. In this case look at tunnel bear or
Witopia or any of several other small providers. Essentially they are putting
UNIX servers in network data centers and then allowing tunnels from that server
back to your computers. On the other end the UNIX server just spews out the
data to the regular Internet but it then appears like you are connected inside
the data center. This provides two services:
1. All traffic leaving your system is encrypted and just looks like garbage all
going to the VPN provider. Second, you can make it look like you are in Germany
even when connected to the Internet in Hong Kong.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

just connect to my home network and send everything else in the clear or tunnel
everything through the home connection encrypted.

You could also build a server with two NICs and put one on the inside network,
one on the outside, enable IP forwarding and install Open VPN. Advantage here
is you can use existing hardware in your collection but more setup work on the
down side.

You could also buy some hardware on eBay used. Something like
an old Cisco ASA or Juniper SRX that you would wire up similarly and or use as
a router replacement. Since you’re a technical guy and heavy on the systems
side you might like this option so you start learning and working with
enterprise level gear on the cheap.

Just a ew ideas.

Hi good people.
When i used Android a short while there was an app called ”smart audio book
player” that looked very nice and promising. I wonder what is the best audio
book player for iOs that can be used with audio books in .mp3 format and that
can be used even outside the US? The reason for the last question is that i
live in Sweden and i don’t think we can use apps like Bard Mobile there.

Hi Simon,

Yes, it's simply a tunnel so as long as you enter the proper credentials, it
shouldn't matter whether you're dealing with Mac or Windows.

Yes, I'm out of the fire zone this year. Nothing left to burn around us :).
There have been some smaller fires within 70 to 80 kilometres but not really
any big concerns to many of us. The worst of it all is in British Columbia,
just on the other side of the Rockies from us. My Dad lives close to a rather
aggressive one that ignited a couple of days ago, but so far he's not worried.
Lots of smoke and often difficult to see particularly far, and rough for folks
with respiratory ailments.

Let me know if you have any issues trying to set things up.

I would suggest you use, and do use myself already, MacOS X Server. Since you
already have Minis, you would just need the Server app, available from the App
