Re: Aggravating USB issue

2017-11-11 Thread Christine Grassman
Actually, I have just tried again with the cable which acts as both interface
cable nd charger (one plugs the cable into an adaptor) which kept falling out
before; it’s a magnet where it attaches to the Actilino, which as we all know,
can be tricky. But I have finally done it. I’m amazed the tech didn’t fiddle
with things more, but I guess he figured it wasn’t an “Apple” issue . . . which
really, it’s not, once we ascertained the MacBook was working fine. Aggravation
terminated. :)

Re: Aggravating USB issue

2017-11-11 Thread alia robinson
I also got from the user manual that you can’t transfer plain text to the
device and have it contracted on the actilino itsself. you have to contract it
through transfer on their software. that was the deal breaker for me. the
neobraille also moves the display automatically it seems. I am starting to have
wrist issues myself.

Re: Aggravating USB issue

2017-11-11 Thread Christine Grassman
This was my initial response as well. However, it works quite nicely with
Bluetooth; the Braille is excellent; it is comfortable to use, and most
importantly for me, it has automatic tactile control which allows for reading
without having to manually go backwards and forwards (although one can, if one
wishes). I am an extremely fast Braille reader and I have tendinitis in my
dominant hand, so any extra repetitive motion is a no-no. I am also quite
confident that the manufacturer will get around to making Actilino as
compatible with Mac as with Windows. For my purposes, it is worth the
inconvenience.
Now, for the update regarding the original problem:
Apparently, none of the USB cables I have appear to be the correct one for
connecting the Actilino to the MacBook. I require a male-to-male USB 3.0, which
is no longer standard, and Apple doesn’t carry it, nor any adaptors for it.
I’ve ordered a couple. Meanwhile, the Genius Bar member, Mike, who was
assisting me stated that I should ascertain that people copy and paste between
the Actilino and a MacBook this way, as he said he was not certain it would
work even with the correct cable. He suggested it might be more feasible to
copy my files onto a drive from the MacBook, then connect that drive to the USB
port and read on the Actilino. So I am off to the Handy Tech list to clarify
what others are doing. Apparently, my computer and all ports are in tip-top
shape, and the MacBook was reacting to a different USB cable connection than it
liked, as it was happening merely with the insertion of the various cables,
even without the Actilino attached.

Hi,

Any tips anyone can give on using this keyboard would be appreciated. My
girlfriend and I both got one but can't seem to figure out how to do something
simple like actvitate an item or return to the home screen.

Does anyone know of a UG or any documentation on using this particular keyboard
with the iPhone?

Thanks,

Gabe

Re: Aggravating USB issue

2017-11-11 Thread alia robinson
I looked at the actilino. I decided against it because it uses all windows
software. there isn’t even a way to update it with a mac. that made it
absolutely unfeasible for me.

On Nov 11, 2017, at 1:54 PM, Christine Grassman wrote:

paraphrasing. I’ve tried connecting with the MacBook and the Actilino with and
without AC power. I tried simply ignoring the message and checking system
information to see if the Actilino was being read as an available device. Nope.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Headed to the Apple store later for something
entirely different, but I’m not sure if they can help with this: the question
is: is this a glitch in the MacBook or the Actilino, or neither? Can’t see how
it’s user error, but . . . you never know. :) It was also suggested that I hold
down left shift, control, option, and the power key for at least ten seconds
with the MacBook plugged in and all USB devices unplugged, then try again. No
luck. I’ve tried rebooting. I’ve checked my disk. I suspect it isn’t worth
attempting resetting the PRAM, but what do I know? I’m not nearly as
technically savvy as a bunch of you folks.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

P.S. Otherwise, after a two-and-half-month quest to find the Braille display
which is ideal for me, Actilino fits the bill . . . so I would love to resolve
this soon.

Re: Aggravating USB issue

2017-11-11 Thread Sharon Hooley
You know, I had the same or similar problem with at least one Usb port. I
found that it happened after I jabbed my headphone jack into it by mistake. It
apparently set some switch, so I found that I just needed to go back into it
at the bottom corner, where I could feel it closer to the opening and gently
push it further back into the slot with that blunt object. Then I could
feel it click back into place, and that fixed it.

Hth, and let us know if that worked.

2017-11-11 Thread Eileen Scrivani
I think it will be a wonderful device. Although, last night while watching
A.b.C. news at 11 PM they had a short clip about issues with Apple’s new 10 and
its locking up in the cold. It turned very cold here yesterday and we’re now
having December/January temps in the 20’s & 30’s. The broadcast said Apple is
aware of the problem and working on it. Other than that they didn’t give any
further information.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed that by the time I get my phone in early
december I’ll get a model that doesn’t have any adversions to cold. Between now
and then I guess I’ll get knitting and make the thing a protective warming
case!

Hi Mark,

I too went to my local Apple store earlier this week intending to get a new
phone. I looked at both the 8 and the new 10. I didn’t consider looking at the
8 plus since I like a phone that takes up smaller real estate in my purse &
pocket. I still can’t believe I took the plunge, but I ordered an IPhone 10 in
silver with 256G. I have to say I think the phone is really slick. And even
though I don’t see the screen I do find myself using the phone for a lot of
scanning and picture taking these days. I think the better photo ability will
help at the end of the day. I do think its crazy money to spend on a phone. I
never in my life thought I’d spend this much on a phone, but I do love my cell
phone and its so much more than just a phone. This one will have to last me
longer than usual because I can’t justify upgrading this one in another 3 or 4
years. To be honest my IPhone 6 is still working perfectly and is in good
condition. I treated myself and why not we only live once!

I will have a learning curve on some of the new gestures once I get the phone
in 3 to 4 weeks. I also wound up coming home and placing the order by phone
because I wanted to return my 6 for cash, but to do that I would have been
without a phone during the 3 or 4 week waiting period on the 10. So once I get
the 10 I’ll go back to the Apple store and ask for gift cards for my phone and
my husbands 6 which I had been holding onto. I’ll buy all the necessary
accessories once I have the gift cards in-hand.

Enjoy your new 8 plus.

Subject: It's Official: Mark is on iPhone 8 Plus (smile)

Hello All,

Well, I was in an Apple Store today just browsing around when I decided to
go ahead and make the plunge and get a new phone.

While I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with iPhone 10, believe it or not, I
do not like its smaller form factor nor, as a low vision user, its display
aspect-ratio in terms of watching videos. To me, it's just too narrow.
Again, this is just my opinion and my opinion, only.

As for my take on Face ID? Hmm! Well, the thrill of it wore off pretty
fast on me (smile).

While I have no doubt but that Face ID is here to stay, as well it should, I
decided to go with a SIM-free, space gray, 256GB iPhone 8 Plus.

I was surprised to learn that the SIM-free models of the iPHone 8 series
launched in the US at the same time as the carrier-branded models. It used
to be that the SIM-free models were launched no sooner than two months after
the carrier-branded models.

I was told by an Apple Genius, today, that the SIM-free model of iPhone 10
is not yet available in the US.

Just as an F.Y.I., in the USA, only the SIM-free models ship with a SIM card
removal tool. I have always thought this to be a ridiculous practice of
Apple for, carrier-branded or not, one may choose to remove the SIM card at
some point in the future. Besides, for the amount of money one pays for
iPhone, I think Apple should include the SIM card removal tool, along with a
three-course meal, for that matter. (smile)

I also purchased Apple Care Plus along with my prerequisite screen
protector.

I was delighted to discover that the 8 plus fits in the same case as my 6
plus so no added expense, there.

I updated my Windows iTunes 12.6 to 12.6.3 and it's running beautifully.

As I did not update my iPhone 6 Plus to iOS 11.x, I will make a full backup
to iTunes and restore to the new phone later this weekend.

Okay, I know that's more information than you wanted but, what can I say?
I'm feeling chatty (smile).

Until Next Time,

Mark

Free data recovery software for damaged memory card?

2017-11-11 Thread Alex Hall
Hi all,
I'm looking for data recovery software that's low cost or free and works on
macOS. My mother uses a high-end digital camera, and one of her compact flash
cards is corrupt. At least, I'm assuming it is, because it worked to take
pictures but is now not recognized by any computer we try it in. It's an old
card, so this doesn't surprise me, but I'd like to help her recover the
pictures before I format and trash the card. Does anyone have suggestions for
good software to handle this? To be clear, I'm not looking for a way to recover
deleted data, which is mostly what I found online. Thanks.

Anyway, if you are able to glance at your iPhone X there is a feature
that you can enable in settings, accessibility, Face ID and passcode.
David has a good point about the cameras being useful for the blind with
 improved OCR.

Maybe they do but you will find sighted people complain about things
they don't like as well. This can range from tech changes to well
anything else like bad drivers.

unlock an iPhone 10 and they were most definitely not twins. Mac rumours
 has the story.

Re: It's Official: Mark is on iPhone 8 Plus (smile)

2017-11-11 Thread Michael Busboom
That’s not a bad price, Mark, when one considers how much these devices do for
us. I use my iPhone to read eBooks, get around, get sighted assistance, listen
to Audible books, identify packages that I purchase from the grocery store, and
the list goes on.

I hope you have loads of fun with your new phone!

All the best from Austria, where lots of people will be enjoying St. Martin’s
Day goose today,

Mike
