Re: How to keep your phone (and fingers) from freezing this winter, iMore

2018-01-07 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

I feel for you Mark, as I understand that when you're used to much warmer
temperatures, 25 F may seem cold. I'll tell you though, that after living
through three weeks of temperatures ranging from about -23 F to near -40 F, and
even down past -50 F with the windchill, I'd probably be out there in a T-shirt
in Portland. Yes, we were colder than the surface of Mars, but not everywhere
on Mars, of course.

Simon, my Martian contacts confirmed this with me :).

Simon, your post really made me laugh out loud. Thank you.

I just spent three days up in Portland Oregon where the temperatures hovered
around 25 degrees, Fahrenheit, and I can tell you that to me, a resident of
California, it felt like the surface of mars!!! I haven't been that cold in
quite a long, long time.

However, I'm happy to report that all of my devices functioned as expected.

Regardless, I'm glad to be back home. (smile)

Ok,
Mark as interrsting and usefull as this article is, I have one major question
about it.

How the hell do they know that the temperature of the city or area of the
country they live in is colder than the surface temperature of Mars?

Last time I checked earthlings had not yet been to mars, Ok people have sent
robots and other tools, But still those devices can not confirm that the
temperatures on Mars are warmer or colder than that here on earth,

And I can't say I've ever met a martion that has come to earth and said they'd
come for a warmer break from the cold as temps on the red planet,

When man kind gets to mars may be then I'll believe the statement.

How to keep your phone (and fingers) from freezing this winter By Luke
Filipowicz, 5 Jan 2018

Although Christmas has come and gone and we are securely into 2018, many of us
still have to deal with a few months of cold, snowy, and windy weather.
Using your phone outdoors can be tricky - and potentially dangerous - if you
live in a city that can get colder than the surface of Mars (like I do).
Personal experience is the best experience Yes, I live in a city where it
occasionally gets colder than the surface of Mars. Winnipeg - "Winterpeg" for
the pun enthusiasts - has some pretty harsh weather during the winter months,
and although we locals like to think it make us extra tough, it can really suck
to use your phone outdoors during the cold months.
Last year, around this time, I was doing some social media work for a local
minor hockey team and they were having an outdoor game as part of a fundraiser.
I can't remember exactly how cold it was, but I can tell you I was wearing
three sweaters, two jackets, three different types of pants, and about 3 pairs
of socks; I was still cold. As the game was starting, I started snapping
pictures with my DSLR, sending them to my iPhone, and posting on the teams'
social media accounts.
Before the first period was even halfway over - less than 10 mins for those
less sports-inclined folks - my fully charged iPhone 5S was at 10% battery life
and I had gotten some mild frostbite on my fingers from using my phone.
It sucked.
The sub-zero temperatures aren't only bad news for your hands and fingers, but
cold is no friend to your device's battery either. In fact, you can do some
real damage to your iPhone's battery if you try charging it while it's cold.
Here's a short and sweet guide to keeping your iPhone and hands warm this
winter.
Protect your battery from the cold
lt;img
src="https://www.imore.com/sites/imore.com/files/styles/xlarge_wm_brw/public
/field/image/2017/11/outdoor-scene-winter-iphone-8-plus.JPG?itok=JWMWhri8"
width="1600" height="1200" alt="" class="image-xlarge_wm_brw aligncenter
image-xlarge"gt; Lithium-ion batteries are commonplace in many devices,
and they're also the same type of battery that your iPhone uses. Without going
down a technical rabbit hole, these batteries rely on a chemical reaction to
produce power and charge; when they get cold, that chemical reaction slows
down, causing your battery to perform poorly.
The easiest way to prevent the cold weather from negatively impacting your
phone's performance is to keep your iPhone as warm as possible. If you plan to
venture out into the cold this winter with your phone, do your best to keep it
warm -

Simon,

Had my AmEx with me, my iPhone for basic stuff, but no Mac. Was a family
birthday weekend out in the sticks. No time to play on computers, too many
other activities and consumption of tasty beverages. Back in town now, so not
enough time past to actually go through withdrawals.

RE: qcast

2018-01-07 Thread myguidedogis
Their customer service stinks. I have written to them on multiple occasions
regarding receiving the activation code for a purchased Q Cast. I have yet to
hear from them. They took my $10 and I’ve not heard from them since. The
product is good, customer service or specifically replying to emails regarding
the activation code, is horrible.

Re: Question about installing jaws on my Mac

2018-01-07 Thread Jonathan Cohn
Sorry, not quite. The Pro version costs about as much as JAWS always did in the
past. The home version SMA is about $120. There is also a special pricing for
the home version that you can get if your company buys enough of the Pro
version or if you go to the NFB National convention.

But still I have hard several times from VFO folks that the difference between
Pro and Home is licensing rather than anything technical.
I believe you can even get the remote client services for the home version
which was not true for v15.

Best wishes,

Jonathan Cohn

 Hello folks,
I installed windows 10 on my Mac and then installed jaws. After installing
jaws, I activated and everything went great, however after rebooting the
computer, jaws brings up the jaws activation dialog again. It has my jaws
authorization number in there again and it tells me activation was
successful, but it does this everytime. Any thoughts on why the activation
is not holding? Looks like jaws professional is being installed and not
the home version. But I didn’t see a separate installer for that version.
A few years ago I went ahead and switched my SMA to the home one vbut jaws
professional is being installed here. Wonder if that is why the activation
window keeps coming up. Any thoughts would be welcome.

Also, the built-in Maps app is accessible and will give you walking

VO-Spacebar not opening applications

2018-01-07 Thread Eric Brinkman
Hello listers,

When I press VO-spacebar to open an application in the finder, I hear
"open finder item" but the application does not open. The only way to
open it seems to be to press Control-Shift-M and then select open.
Have any of you experienced this?

Thanks,
Eric

Re: Question about installing jaws on my Mac

2018-01-07 Thread Eric Oyen
well, so that is how VFO is trying to play the game. If you make money on a
paid for product (like jaws), they demand what? A percentage or an extra fee?

btw, I am still on Jaws 16 here (the pro version) and there was no such clause
in that user agreement then.

Re: Question about installing jaws on my Mac

2018-01-07 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

I have had exactly the same problem. I haven’t found a solution in fact,
yesterday I used bootcamp to remove the windows partition and start again. This
time I put NVDA on. Because I did make the mistake of using 2018 and not sure
if I was or not licensed to use that version.

Because I struggled to log into my Windows partition I lost speech. Using
Seeing AI I could tell I was on a change password screen. A sighted friend got
me to the desktop. He had to remove the tick to mute the audio. Upon reboot the
audio was muted again. I strongly suspect it was jaws muting the audio, what a
mess. I will check to see what version of jaws cane with my El Braille summer
of last year and try again. When I’ve got a few more hours of my life I don’t
mind waisting.

Like you twice or three times I got the successful registration screen. I think
I did it 3 times. So haven’t got a clue whether I have any activations or not.

Please report to the list if you find the solution. I guess I should report it
as a bug. But life is just too short.

Braille is a reading and writing language that all blind people should learn to
use.

Re: GPS on iOS

2018-01-07 Thread David Chittenden
I mainly use Apple Maps. I occasionally use Google Maps. When using public
transit, I use moovit.

I occasionally use BlindSquare when searching for nearby businesses.

Kind regards,

Re: GPS on iOS

2018-01-07 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Krister,

ViaOpta Nav has acquired more features. In any case, it’s free so you can try
it without wasting money.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: GPS on iOS

2018-01-07 Thread Krister Ekstrom
This is the only gripe i have about the iOs platform, that no good gps solution
exists if you live outside the US or UK and i think it’s too bad. Yes you can
use Blindsquare but personally i don’t think it’s as intuitive as it could be.
Isn’t Viaopta nav only limited to turn-by-turn instructions?
